Lepton flavor violating tau and B decays and heavy neutrinos

We study lepton flavor violating (LFV) tau and B decays in models with heavy neutrinos to constrain the mixing matrix parameters U_{tau N}. We find that the best current constraints when the heavy neutrinos are purely left-handed come from LFV radiative tau decay modes. To obtain competitive constraints in LFV B decay it is necessary to probe b -> X_{s} tau^{\pm} e^{\mp} at the 10^{-7} level. When the heavy neutrinos have both left and right-handed couplings, the mixing parameters can be constrained by studying LFV B decay modes and LFV tau decay into three charged leptons. We find that the branching ratios B(tau^{\pm} -> l_1^{\pm} l_2^{\pm} l_3^{\mp}), B(B_{s} -> tau^{\pm} e^{\mp}) and B(b -> X_{s} l_1^{\pm} l_2^{\mp}) need to be probed at the 10^{-8} level in order to constrain the mixing parameters beyond what is known from unitarity.

CP Asymmetry in $\bar B^0\to K^- π^+$ from SUSY Flavor Changing Interactions

Recently Babar and Belle collaborations have measured direct CP asymmetry $A_{CP}=-0.114\pm 0.020$ in $\bar B^0 \to K^- π^+$. The experimental value is substantially different from QCD factorization prediction. We show that SUSY flavor changing neutral current interaction via gluonic dipole can explain the difference. CP asymmetries in other $B\to Kπ$ decays are predicted to be sizeable. Taking this asymmetry as a constraint, we find that the allowed SUSY parameter space is considerably reduced compared with constraint from $B\to X_s γ$ alone. We also find that the allowed time dependent CP asymmetries $S_f$ in $\bar B^0 \to \bar K^{* 0}γ\to π^0 K_S γ$ and $\bar B^0\to ϕK_S$ to be large. These predictions are quite different than those predicted in the Standard Model and can be tested in the near future.

K+ -> pi+ nu nu(bar) and FCNC from non-universal Z' bosons

Motivated by the E787 and E949 result for K+ -> pi+ nu nu(bar) we examine the effects of a new non-universal right-handed Z' boson on flavor changing processes. We place bounds on the tree-level FCNC from K-K(bar) and B-B(bar) mixing as well as from the observed CP violation in kaon decay. We discuss the implications for K -> pi nu nu(bar), B -> X nu nu(bar) and B -> tau+ tau-. We find that existing bounds allow substantial enhancements in the K+ -> pi+ nu nu(bar) rate, particularly through a new one-loop Z' penguin operator.

Photoproduction and Radiative Decay of Spin 1/2 and 3/2 Pentaquarks

We study photoproduction and radiative decays of pentauqarks paying particular attention to the differences between spin-1/2 and spin-3/2, positive and negative parities of pentaquarks. Detailed study of these processes can not only give crucial information about the spin, but also the parity of pentaquarks.

Constraints on New Physics from $K \to πν\barν$

We study constraints on new physics from the recent measurement of Br ($K^+ \to π^+ ν\bar ν)$ by the E787 and E949 Collaborations. In our analysis we consider two models of new physics: $(a)$ extra down type singlet quark model (EDSQ) and $(b)$ R-parity violating Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model(MSSM). We find that $K^+\to π^+ ν\bar ν$ along with other processes like $K_L \to μ^+ μ^-, ε^\prime/ε$ provide useful bounds on the parameter $U_{sd}$, characterizing the off-diagonal $Z-d-\bar s $ coupling of model $(a)$. The bounds on the ${\rm Re}(U_{sd})$ from $(K_L \to μ^+μ^-)_{\rm SD}$ and ${\rm Im}(U_{sd})$ from $ε^\prime/ε$ are so tight that the branching ratio of $K^+\to π^+ ν\bar ν$ can exceed the standard model value by at most a factor of two For model b), we also obtain stringent bounds on certain combinations of product of two $\lp_{ijk}$ couplings originating from $L$ number violating operator $ L_i Q_j D^c_k $ using $K^+ \to π^+ ν\bar ν$ and $K_L \to μ^+ μ^-$ processes. Even with the stringent constraints on $U_{sd}$ (in model $(a)$) and on products of two $\rp$couplings (model $(b)$), we find that the branching ratios for $K_L \to π^0 ν\bar ν$ and $K_L \to π^0 e^+ e^-$ can be substantially different in both the above models from those predicted in the standard model.

Hadronic Decays Involving Heavy Pentaquarks

Recently several experiments have reported evidences for pentaquark $Θ^+$. H1 experiment at HERA-B has also reported evidence for $Θ_c$. $Θ^+$ is interpreted as a bound state of an $\bar s$ with other four light quarks $udud$ which is a member of the anti-decuplet under flavor $SU(3)_f$. While $Θ_c$ is a state by replacing the $\bar s$ in $Θ^+$ by a $\bar c$. One can also form $Θ_b$ by replacing the $\bar s$ by a $\bar b$. The charmed and bottomed heavy pentaquarks form triplets and anti-sixtets under $SU(3)_f$. We study decay processes involving at least one heavy pentaquark using $SU(3)_f$ and estimate the decay widths for some decay modes. We find several relations for heavy pentaquarks decay into another heavy pentaquark and a $B (B^*)$ or a $D(D^*)$ which can be tested in the future. $B$ can decay through weak interaction to charmed heavy pentaquarks. We also study some $B$ decay modes with a heavy pebtaquark in the final states. Experiments at the current $B$ factories can provide important information about the heavy pentaquark properties.

Interactions of a neutrino with an extremely light scalar

An extremely light scalar weakly interacting with light neutrinos has interesting consequences in stellar evolution, neutrino oscillations and laboratory neutrino mass measurements. In this paper we construct realistic gauge models for such scalar-neutrino interactions.

Is the Zee model neutrino mass matrix ruled out?

A very economic model of generating small neutrino masses is the Zee model. This model has been studied extensively in the literature with most of the studies concentrated on the simplest version of the model where all diagonal entries in the mass matrix are zero. SNO, and KamLAND data disfavor this simple version, but only when one also combines information from atmospheric and K2K data, can one rule out this model with high confidence level. We show that the simplest version of Zee model is ruled out at $3σ$ level. The original Zee model, however, contains more than enough freedom to satisfy constraints from data. We propose a new form of mass matrix by naturalness consideration. This new form of mass matrix predicts that $m_{ν_3} = 0$, and $\tan^2θ_{solar}$ increases with $|V_{e3}|$. For the best fit value of $\tan^2θ_{solar}$, $|V_{e3}|$ is sizeable but below the upper bound.

Constraints on Supersymmetric Flavor Changing Parameters Using B->PP Decays

We study contributions of quark-squark-gluino interactions in Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) to B->PP (PP =Kpi, pipi, KK) decays using QCD improved factorization method for the evaluation of the hadronic matrix elements and taking into account renormalization group running of the Wilson coefficients from SUSY scale (~ m_{\tilde q}) to the low energy scale (= m_b) applicable to B decays. Using the most recent experimental data we obtain constraints on flavor changing Supersymmetric (SUSY) parameters (δ_{ij})_{LL, RR}. For ΔS = -1 processes, b-> s gamma is usually considered to give the strongest limits. We, however, find that in some part of the parameter space B-> Kpi processes give stronger bounds. Implications for B^0_s -\bar B^0_s mixing is discussed. We also study cons traints obtained from ΔS = 0 processes B-> pipi, KK, rho gamma and B_d -\bar B_d mixing. In this case, in a large part of the parameter space B_d - \bar B_d provides the best bound, but B-> K^- K^0, rho gamma can still give interesting constraints in a complementary region of the parameter space.

$B \to η(η') K(π)$ in the Standard Model with Flavor Symmetry

The observed branching ratios for $B\to K η'$ decays are much larger than factorization predictions in the Standard Model (SM). Many proposals have been made to reconcile the data and theoretical predictions. In this paper we study these decays within the SM using flavor U(3) symmetry. If small annihilation amplitudes are neglected, one needs 11 hadronic parameters to describe $B\to PP$ decays where $P$ can be one of the $π$, $K$, $η$ and $η'$ nonet mesons. We find that existing data are consistent with SM with flavor U(3) symmetry. We also predict several measurable branching ratios and CP asymmetries for $B \to K (π) η(η')$, $η(η')η(η')$ decays. Near future experiments can provide important tests for the Standard Model with flavor U(3) symmetry.

Strong, Electroweak Interactions and Their Unification with Noncommutative Space-time

Quantum field theories based on noncommutative space-time (NCQFT) have been extensively studied recently. However no NCQFT model, which can uniquely describe the strong and electroweak interactions, has been constructed. This prevents consistent and systematic study of noncommutative space-time. In this work we construct a NCQFT model based on the trinification gauge group $SU(3)_C\times SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R$. A unique feature of this model, that all matter fields (fermions and Higgses) are assigned to (anti-)fundamental representations of the factor SU(3) groups, allows us to construct a NCQFT model for strong and electroweak interactions and their unification without ambiguities. This model provides an example which allows consistent and systematic study of noncommutative space-time phenomenology. We also comment on some related issues regarding extensions to $E_6$ and $U(3)_C\times U(3)_L\times U(3)_R$ models.

Magnetic Properties of Scalar Particles --The Scalar Aharonov-Casher Effect and Supersymmetry

The original topological Aharonov-Casher (AC) effect is due to the interaction of the anomalous magnetic dipole moment (MDM) with certain configurations of electric field. Naively one would not expect an AC effect for a scalar particle for which no anomalous MDM can be defined in the usual sense. In this letter we study the AC effect in supersymmetric systems. In this framework there is the possibility of deducing the AC effect of a scalar particle from the corresponding effect for a spinor particle. In 3+1 dimensions such a connection is not possible because the anomalous MDM is zero if supersymmetry is an exact symmetry. However, in 2+1 dimensions it is possible to have an anomalous MDM even with exact supersymmetry. Having demonstrated the relationship between the spinor and the scalar MDM, we proceed to show that the scalar AC effect is uniquely defined. We then compute the anomalous MDM at the one loop level, showing how the scalar form arises in 2+1 dimensions from the coupling of the scalar to spinors. This model shows how an AC effect for a scalar can be generated for non-supersymmetric theories, and we construct such a model to illustrate the mechanism.

Higgs Mass from Casimir Energy Induced Cosmological Constant in the Standard Model

Casimir vacuum energy is divergent. It needs to be regularized. The regularization introduces a renormalization scale which may lead to a scale dependent cosmological constant. We show that the requirement of physical cosmological constant is renormalization scale independent provides important constraints on possible particle contents and their masses in particle physics models. In the Standard Model of strong and electroweak interactions, besides the Casimir vacuum energy there is also vacuum energy induced from spontaneous symmetry breaking. The requirement that the total vacuum energy to be scale independent dictates the Higgs mass to be $m_H^4 = 8\sum_i N_i m^4_i - 12m^4_W - 6 m^4_Z$, where the summation is over fermions and $N_i$ equals to 3 and 1 for quarks and leptons, respectively. The Higgs mass is predicted to be approximately 382 GeV.

CP violation in $B \to PP$ in the SM with SU(3) symmetry

In this paper we study CP violation in $B\to PP$ decays in the Standard Model using SU(3) flavor symmetry. With SU(3) symmetry only seven hadronic parameters are needed to describe $B\to PP$ decays in the SM when annihilation contributions are neglected. The relevant hadronic parameters can be determined using known experimental data from $B\to ππ$ and $B\to K π$. We predict branching ratios and CP asymmetries for some of the unmeasured $B \to PP$ decays. Some of the CP asymmetries can be large and measured at B factories. The effects of annihilation contributions can also be studied using present experimental data. Inclusion of annihilation contributions introduces six more hadronic parameters. We find that annihilation contributions are in general small, but can have significant effects on CP asymmetries and some $B_s \to PP$.

Future Island Universes in a Background Universe Accelerated by Cosmological Constant and by Quintessence

We study bound object formation in a background universe accelerated by cosmological constant and by quintessence. If the acceleration lasts forever, due to the existence of event horizon, one would have naively expected the universe to approach a state of cold death. However, we find that many local regions in the universe can in fact be protected by their own gravity to form mini-universes, provided that their present matter densities exceed some critical value. In the case with cosmological constant ($Λ$CDM cosmology) the condition of forming mini-universe is that the ratio of present density parameters $Ω_{i}^0/Ω_Λ$ ought to be larger than a critical value 3.63. Such mini-universes typically weigh less than $2\times 10^{14}$ solar masses, with the lighter ones having tight and compact configurations. In the case with quintessence, the final ratio $Ω_i/Ω_q$ of a mini-universe is found to be always larger than $w_q^2-w_q$, where $w_q$ is the equation of state parameter.

The $Z \to b \bar{b}$ Decay Asymmetry and Left-Right Models

It has been pointed out recently by Chanowitz that the $Z \to b\bar{b}$ decay asymmetry poses a problem for the standard model whether it is genuine or not [Chanowitz:2001bv]. If this conflict is interpreted as new physics in the b-quark couplings, it suggests a rather large right handed coupling of the b-quark to the Z-boson. We show that it is possible to accommodate this result in left-right models that single out the third generation.

Triple Neutral Gauge Boson Couplings in Noncommutative Standard Model

It has been shown recently that the triple neutral gauge boson couplings are not uniquely determined in noncommutative extension of the Standard Model (NCSM). Depending on specific schemes used, the couplings are different and may even be zero. To distinguish different realizations of the NCSM, additional information either from theoretical or experimental considerations is needed. In this paper we show that these couplings can be uniquely determined from considerations of unification of electroweak and strong interactions. Using SU(5) as the underlying theory and integrating out the heavy degrees of freedom, we obtain unique non-zero new triple $γγγ$, $γγZ$, $γZZ$, $ZZZ$, $γGG$, $ZGG$ and $GGG$ couplings at the leading order in the NCSM. We also briefly discuss experimental implications.

Constraining R-parity violating couplings from B --> PP decays using QCD improved factorization method

We investigate the role of R-parity violating interaction in the non-leptonic decays of B mesons into two light mesons B --> PP. The decay amplitudes are calculated using the QCD improved factorization method. Using the combined data on B decays from BaBar, Belle and CLEO, we obtain strong constraints on the various products of R-parity violating couplings. Many of these new constraints are stronger than the existing bounds.
