2D symmetry protected topological orders and their protected gapless edge excitations

Topological insulators in free fermion systems have been well characterized and classified. However, it is not clear in strongly interacting boson or fermion systems what symmetry protected topological orders exist. In this paper, we present a model in a 2D interacting spin system with nontrivial on-site $Z_2$ symmetry protected topological order. The order is nontrivial because we can prove that the 1D system on the boundary must be gapless if the symmetry is not broken, which generalizes the gaplessness of Wess-Zumino-Witten model for Lie symmetry groups to any discrete symmetry groups. The construction of this model is related to a nontrivial 3-cocycle of the $Z_2$ group and can be generalized to any symmetry group. It potentially leads to a complete classification of symmetry protected topological orders in interacting boson and fermion systems of any dimension. Specifically, this exactly solvable model has a unique gapped ground state on any closed manifold and gapless excitations on the boundary if $Z_2$ symmetry is not broken. We prove the latter by developing the tool of matrix product unitary operator to study the nonlocal symmetry transformation on the boundary and revealing the nontrivial 3-cocycle structure of this transformation. Similar ideas are used to construct a 2D fermionic model with on-site $Z_2$ symmetry protected topological order.

Interaction effects on 1D fermionic symmetry protected topological phases

In free fermion systems with given symmetry and dimension, the possible topological phases are labeled by elements of only three types of Abelian groups, Z_1, Z_2, or Z. For example non-interacting 1D fermionic superconducting phases with S_z spin rotation and time-reversal symmetries are classified by Z. We show that with weak interactions, this classification reduces to Z_4. Using group cohomology, one can additionally show that there are only four distinct phases for such 1D superconductors even with strong interactions. Comparing their projective representations, we find all these four symmetry protected topological phases can be realized with free fermions. Further, we show that 1D fermionic superconducting phases with Z_n discrete S_z spin rotation and time-reversal symmetries are classified by Z_4 when n=even and Z_2 when n=odd; again, all these strongly interacting topological phases can be realized by non-interacting fermions. Our approach can be applied to systems with other symmetries to see which 1D topological phases can be realized by free fermions.

Projective non-Abelian Statistics of Dislocation Defects in a Z_N Rotor Model

Non-Abelian statistics is a phenomenon of topologically protected non-Abelian Berry phases as we exchange quasiparticle excitations. In this paper, we construct a Z_N rotor model that realizes a self-dual Z_N Abelian gauge theory. We find that lattice dislocation defects in the model produce topologically protected degeneracy. Even though dislocations are not quasiparticle excitations, they resemble non-Abelian anyons with quantum dimension sqrt(N). Exchanging dislocations can produces topologically protected projective non-Abelian Berry phases. The dislocations, as projective non-Abelian anyons can be viewed as a generalization of the Majorana zero modes.

Luttinger-volume violating Fermi liquid in the pseudogap phase of the cuprate superconductors

Based on the NMR measurements on Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (La-Bi2201) in strong magnetic fields, we identify the non-superconducting pseudogap phase in the cuprates as a Luttinger-volume violating Fermi liquid (LvvFL). This state is a zero temperature quantum liquid that does not break translational symmetry, and yet, the Fermi surface encloses a volume smaller than the large one given by the Luttinger theorem. The particle number enclosed by the small Fermi surface in the LvvFL equals the doping level $p$, not the total electron number $n_e=1-p$. Both the phase string theory and the dopon theory are introduced to describe the LvvFL. For the dopon theory, we can obtain a semi-quantitative agreement with the NMR experiments.

Pattern-of-zeros approach to Fractional quantum Hall states and a classification of symmetric polynomial of infinite variables

Some purely chiral fractional quantum Hall states are described by symmetric or anti-symmetric polynomials of infinite variables. In this article, we review a systematic construction and classification of those fractional quantum Hall states and the corresponding polynomials of infinite variables, using the pattern-of-zeros approach. We discuss how to use patterns of zeros to label different fractional quantum Hall states and the corresponding polynomials. We also discuss how to calculate various universal properties (ie the quantum topological invariants) from the pattern of zeros.

Symmetry protected topological phases in non-interacting fermion systems

Symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases are gapped quantum phases with a certain symmetry, which can all be smoothly connected to the same trivial product state if we break the symmetry. For non-interacting fermion systems with time reversal (T), charge conjugation (C), and/or U(1) (N) symmetries, the total symmetry group can depend on the relations between those symmetry operations, such as T N T^{-1}= N or T N T^{-1}= -N. As a result, the SPT phases of those fermion systems with different symmetry groups have different classifications. In this paper, we use Kitaev's K-theory approach to classify the gapped free fermion phases for those possible symmetry groups. In particular, we can view the U(1) as a spin rotation. We find that superconductors with the S_z spin rotation symmetry are classified by Z in even dimensions, while superconductors with the time reversal plus the S_z spin rotation symmetries are classified by Z in odd dimensions. We show that all 10 classes of gapped free fermion phases can be realized by electron systems with certain symmetries. We also point out that to properly describe the symmetry of a fermionic system, we need to specify its full symmetry group that includes the fermion number parity transformation (-)^N. The full symmetry group is actually a projective symmetry group.

Symmetry protected topological orders of 1D spin systems with D2+T symmetry

In [Z.-X. Liu, M. Liu, X.-G. Wen, arXiv:1101.5680], we studied 8 gapped symmetric quantum phases in S=1 spin chains %/ladders which respect a discrete spin rotation $D_2 \subset SO(3)$ and time reversal $T$ symmetries. In this paper, using a generalized approach, we study all the 16 possible gapped symmetric quantum phases of 1D integer spin systems with only $D_2+T$ symmetry. Those phases are beyond Landau symmetry breaking theory and cannot be characterized by local order parameters, since they do not break any symmetry. They correspond to 16 symmetry protected topological (SPT) orders. We show that all the 16 SPT orders can be fully characterized by the physical properties of the symmetry protected degenerate boundary states (end `spins') at the ends of a chain segment. So we can measure and distinguish all the 16 SPT orders experimentally. We also show that all these SPT orders can be realized in S=1 spin ladder models. The gapped symmetric phases protected by subgroups of $D_2+T$ are also studied. Again, all these phases can be distinguished by physically measuring their end `spins'.

New gapped quantum phases for S=1 spin chain with D2h symmetry

We study different quantum phases in integer spin systems with on-site D2h=D2xZ2 and translation symmetry. We find four distinct non-trivial phases in S=1 spin chains despite they all have the same symmetry. All the four phases have gapped bulk excitations, doubly-degenerate end states and the doubly-degenerate entanglement spectrum. These non-trivial phases are examples of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases introduced by Gu and Wen. One of the SPT phase correspond to the Haldane phase and the other three are new. These four SPT phases can be distinguished experimentally by their different response of the end states to weak external magnetic fields. According to Chen-Gu-Wen classification, the D2h symmetric spin chain can have totally 64 SPT phases that do not break any symmetry. Here we constructed seven nontrivial phases from the seven classes of nontrivial projective representations of D2h group. Four of these are found in S=1 spin chains and studied in this paper, and the other three may be realized in S=1 spin ladders or S=2 models.

Chiral spin states in polarized kagome spin systems with spin-orbit coupling

We study quantum spin systems with a proper combination of geometric frustration, spin-orbit coupling and ferromagnetism. We argue that such a system is likely to be in a chiral spin state, a fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state for bosonic spin degrees of freedom. The energy scale of the bosonic FQH state is of the same order as the spin-orbit coupling and ferromagnetism --- overall much higher than the energy scale of FQH states in semiconductors.

High temperature fractional quantum Hall states

We show that a suitable combination of geometric frustration, ferromagnetism and spin-orbit interactions can give rise to nearly flat bands with a large bandgap and non-zero Chern number. Partial filling of the flat band can give rise to fractional quantum Hall states at high temperatures (maybe even room temperature). While the identification of material candidates with suitable parameters remains open, our work indicates intriguing directions for exploration and synthesis.

Gauge theory of the Hubbard model on honeycomb lattice and its instanton effect

In this paper we investigate possible spin disordered phase in the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice. Using a slave-particle theory that include the charge fluctuations, we find a meanfield spin disordered phase in a range of on-site repulsion $U$. The spin disordered state is described by gapped fermions coupled to compact U(1) gauge field. We study the confinement/deconfinement problem of the U(1) gauge theory due to the instantons proliferation. We calculate all allowed instanton terms and compute their quantum numbers. It is shown that the meanfield spin disordered phase is unstable. The instantons proliferation induce a translation symmetry breaking.

Phase transitions in Z_N gauge theory and twisted Z_N topological phases

We find a series of non-Abelian topological phases that are separated from the deconfined phase of Z_N gauge theory by a continuous quantum phase transition. These non-Abelian states, which we refer to as the "twisted" Z_N states, are described by a recently studied $U(1) \times U(1) \rtimes Z_2$ Chern-Simons (CS) field theory. The $U(1) \times U(1) \rtimes Z_2$ CS theory provides a way of gauging the global Z_2 electric-magnetic symmetry of the Abelian Z_N phases, yielding the twisted Z_N states. We introduce a parton construction to describe the Abelian Z_N phases in terms of integer quantum Hall states, which then allows us to obtain the non-Abelian states from a theory of Z_2 fractionalization. The non-Abelian twisted Z_N states do not have topologically protected gapless edge modes and, for N > 2, break time-reversal symmetry.

Anyon Condensation and Continuous Topological Phase Transitions in Non-Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall States

We find a series of possible continuous quantum phase transitions between fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states at the same filling fraction in two-component quantum Hall systems. These can be driven by tuning the interlayer tunneling and/or interlayer repulsion. One side of the transition is the Halperin (p,p,p-3) Abelian two-component state while the other side is the non-Abelian Z4 parafermion (Read-Rezayi) state. We predict that the transition is a continuous transition in the 3D Ising class. The critical point is described by a Z2 gauged Ginzburg-Landau theory. These results have implications for experiments on two-component systems at ν= 2/3 and single-component systems at ν= 8/3.

Phase diagram of the Hubbard model on honeycomb lattice

In this paper we generalized the slave-particle technique to study the phase diagram of the Hubbard model on honeycomb lattice which may contain charge fluctuations. For large $U$, we have antiferromagnetic order phase. As we decrease $U$ below $U_{c2}\simeq 3t$, the system undergoes a first order phase transition into a gapped spin rotation invariant phase. Under a semiclassical approximation of the slave-particle approach, we find that such phase breaks the translation symmetry, the parity and the lattice rotation symmetry. However, beyond the semiclassical approximation, a $Z_2$ spin liquid that does not break any lattice symmetry is also possible.

Bilayer quantum Hall phase transitions and the orbifold non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states

We study continuous quantum phase transitions that can occur in bilayer fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems as the interlayer tunneling and interlayer repulsion are tuned. We introduce a slave-particle gauge theory description of a series of continuous transitions from the (ppq) Abelian bilayer states to a set of non-Abelian FQH states, which we dub the orbifold FQH states, of which the Z4 parafermion (Read-Rezayi) state is a special case. This provides an example in which Z2 electron fractionalization leads to non-Abelian topological phases. The naive "ideal" wave functions and ideal Hamiltonians associated with these orbifold states do not in general correspond to incompressible phases, but instead lie at a nearby critical point. We discuss this unusual situation from the perspective of the pattern of zeros/vertex algebra frameworks and discuss implications for the conceptual foundations of these approaches. Due to the proximity in the phase diagram of these non-Abelian states to the (ppq) bilayer states, they may be experimentally relevant, both as candidates for describing the plateaus in single-layer systems at filling fraction 8/3 and 12/5, and as a way to tune to non-Abelian states in double-layer or wide quantum wells.

Classification of Gapped Symmetric Phases in 1D Spin Systems

Quantum many-body systems divide into a variety of phases with very different physical properties. The question of what kind of phases exist and how to identify them seems hard especially for strongly interacting systems. Here we make an attempt to answer this question for gapped interacting quantum spin systems whose ground states are short-range correlated. Based on the local unitary equivalence relation between short-range correlated states in the same phase, we classify possible quantum phases for 1D matrix product states, which represent well the class of 1D gapped ground states. We find that in the absence of any symmetry all states are equivalent to trivial product states, which means that there is no topological order in 1D. However, if certain symmetry is required, many phases exist with different symmetry protected topological orders. The symmetric local unitary equivalence relation also allows us to obtain some simple results for quantum phases in higher dimensions when some symmetries are present.

Local unitary transformation, long-range quantum entanglement, wave function renormalization, and topological order

Two gapped quantum ground states in the same phase are connected by an adiabatic evolution which gives rise to a local unitary transformation that maps between the states. On the other hand, gapped ground states remain within the same phase under local unitary transformations. Therefore, local unitary transformations define an equivalence relation and the equivalence classes are the universality classes that define the different phases for gapped quantum systems. Since local unitary transformations can remove local entanglement, the above equivalence/universality classes correspond to pattern of long range entanglement, which is the essence of topological order. The local unitary transformation also allows us to define a wave function renormalization scheme, under which a wave function can flow to a simpler one within the same equivalence/universality class. Using such a setup, we find conditions on the possible fixed-point wave functions where the local unitary transformations have \emph{finite} dimensions. The solutions of the conditions allow us to classify this type of topological orders, which generalize the string-net classification of topological orders. We also describe an algorithm of wave function renormalization induced by local unitary transformations. The algorithm allows us to calculate the flow of tensor-product wave functions which are not at the fixed points. This will allow us to calculate topological orders as well as symmetry breaking orders in a generic tensor-product state.

Condensation of fractional excitons, non-Abelian states in double-layer quantum Hall systems and Z_4 parafermions

In this paper, we study a method to obtain non-Abelian FQH state through double-layer FQH states and fractional exciton condensation. In particular, we find that starting with the (330) double-layer state and then increasing the interlayer tunneling strength, we may obtain a single-layer non-Abelian FQH state S(330). We show that the S(330) state is actually the Z_4 parafermion Read-Rezayi state. We also calculate the edge excitation of the S(330) state.
