Ultrahigh-Energy Gamma-ray Emission Associated with Black Hole-Jet Systems

Black holes (BH), one of the most intriguing objects in the universe, can manifest themselves through electromagnetic radiation initiated by the accretion flow. Some stellar-mass BHs drive relativistic jets when accreting matter from their companion stars, forming microquasars. Non-thermal emission from the radio to tera-electronvolt (TeV) gamma-ray band has been observed from microquasars, indicating the acceleration of relativistic particles. Here we report detection of four microquasars (SS 433, V4641 Sgr, GRS 1915+105, MAXI J1820+070) of spectrum extending to the ultrahigh-energy (UHE; photon energy $E>100$ TeV) band and one microquasar (Cygnus X-1) of spectrum approaching 100 TeV, using the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Notably, the total emission associated with SS 433 cannot be interpreted with a single leptonic component. In the UHE band, its emission is in spatial coincidence with a giant atomic cloud, which is consistent with a hadronic origin. An elongated source is discovered from V4641 Sgr with the spectrum continuing up to 800 TeV. The detection of UHE gamma rays demonstrates that accreting BHs and their environments can operate as extremely efficient accelerators of particles out of 1 peta-electronvolt (PeV), suggesting microquasars to be important contributors to Galactic cosmic rays especially around the `knee' region.

TESS Timings of 31 Hot Jupiters with Ephemeris Uncertainties

A precise transit ephemeris serves as the premise for follow-up exoplanet observations. We compare TESS Objects of Interest (TOI) transit timings of 262 hot Jupiters with the archival ephemeris and find 31 of them having TOI timing offsets, among which WASP-161b shows the most significant offset of -203.7$\pm$4.1 minutes. The median value of these offsets is 17.8 minutes, equivalent to 3.6 $σ$. We generate TESS timings in each sector for these 31 hot Jupiters, using a self-generated pipeline. The pipeline performs photometric measurements to TESS images and produces transit timings by fitting the light curves. We refine and update the previous ephemeris, based on these TESS timings (uncertainty $\sim$ 1 minute) and a long timing baseline ($\sim 10$ years). Our refined ephemeris gives the transit timing at a median precision of 0.82 minutes until 2025 and 1.21 minutes until 2030. We regard the timing offsets mainly originating from the underestimated ephemeris uncertainty. All the targets with timing offset larger than 10$σ$ present earlier timings than the prediction, which cannot be due to underestimated ephemeris uncertainty, apsidal precision, or R$ø$mer effect as those effects should be unsigned. For some particular targets, timing offsets are likely due to tidal dissipation. Our sample leads to the detection of period decaying candidates of WASP-161b and XO-3b reported previously.

Constraining External Reverse Shock Physics of GRBs from ROTSE-III Limits

Assuming that the early optical emission is dominated by the external reverse shock (RS) in the standard model of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), we intend to constrain RS models with the initial Lorentz factor $Γ_0$ of the outflows based on the ROTSE-III observations. We consider two cases of the RS behavior: the relativistic shock and the non-relativistic shock. For homogeneous interstellar medium (ISM) and wind circum-burst environment, the constraints can be achieved by the fact that the peak flux $F_{\rm ν}$ at the RS crossing time should be lower than the observed upper limit $F_{\rm ν,limit}$. We consider the different spectral regimes that the observed optical frequency $ν_{\rm opt}$ may locate in, which are divided by the orders for the minimum synchrotron frequency $ν_{\rm m}$ and the cooling frequency $ν_{\rm c}$. {\bf Considering the homogeneous and wind environment around GRBs, we find that the relativistic RS case can be constrained by the (upper and lower) limits of $Γ_0$ in a large range from about hundreds to thousands for 36 GRBs reported by ROTSE-III. The constraints on the non-relativistic RS case are achieved with limits of $Γ_0$ for 26 bursts ranging from $\sim 30$ to $\sim 350$.} The lower limits of $Γ_0$ achieved for the relativistic RS model is disfavored based on the previously discovered correlation between the initial Lorentz factor $Γ_0$ and the isotropic gamma-ray energy $E_{\rm γ, iso}$ released in prompt phase.

Delayed Onset and Fast Rise of Prompt Optical-UV Emission from Gamma-Ray Bursts in Molecular Clouds

Observations imply that long γ-ray bursts (GRBs) are originated from explosions of massive stars, therefore they may occur in the molecular clouds where their progenitors were born. We show here that the prompt optical-UV emission from GRBs may be delayed due to the dust extinction, which can well explain the observed optical delayed onset and fast rise in GRB 080319B. The density and the size of the molecular cloud around GRB 080319B are roughly constrained to be \sim10^3cm^{-3} and \sim 8pc, respectively. We also investigate the other GRBs with prompt optical-UV data, and find similar values of the densities and sizes of the local molecular clouds. The future observations of prompt optical-UV emission from GRBs in subsecond timescale, e.g., by UFFO-Pathfinder and SVOM-GWAC, will provide more evidence and probes of the local GRB environments.

Origins of Short Gamma-Ray Bursts Deduced from Offsets to Their Host Galaxies Revisited

The spatial distribution of short Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in their host galaxies provide us an opportunity to investigate their origins. Based on the currently observed distribution of short GRBs relative to their host galaxies, we obtain the fraction of the component that traces the mergers of binary compact objects and the one that traces star formation rate (such as massive stars) in early- and late-type host galaxies. We find that the fraction of massive star component is 0.37\pm 0.13 from the analysis of projected offset distribution. This suggests that a good fraction of short GRBs still originate from merger events. From our analysis, we also conclude that the fraction of late-type hosts among the elliptical, starburst and spiral galaxy is 0.82\pm 0.05, which is consistent with the observed early- to late-type number ratio of host galaxies.

Towards the Properties of Long Gamma-Ray Burst Progenitors with Swift Data

We investigate the properties of both the prompt and X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the burst frame with a sample of 33 Swift GRBs. Assuming that the steep decay segment in the canonical X-ray afterglow lightcurves is due to the curvature effect, we fit the lightcurves with a broken power-law to derive the zero time of the last emission epoch of the prompt emission (t1) and the beginning as well as the end time of the shallow decay segment (t2 and t3).We show that both the isotropic peak gamma-ray luminosity and gamma-ray energy are correlated with the isotropic X-ray energy of the shallow decay phase and the isotropic X-ray luminosity at t2. We infer the properties of the progenitor stars based on a model proposed by Kumar et al. who suggested that both the prompt gamma-rays and the X-ray afterglows are due to the accretions of different layers of materials of the GRB progenitor star by a central black hole (BH). We find that most of the derived masses of the core layers are 0.1-5 solar mass with a radius of 10^8-10^10 cm. The rotation parameter is correlated with the burst duration, being consistent with the expectation of collapsar models. The estimated radii and the masses of the fall-back materials for the envelope layers are 10^10-10^12 cm and 10^-3~1 solar mass, respectively. The average accretion rates in the shallow decay phase are correlated with those in the prompt gamma-ray phase, but they are much lower. The derived radii of the envelope are smaller than the photospheric radii of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars. It is interesting that the assembled mass density profile for the bursts in our sample is also well consistent with the simulation for a pre-supernova star with 25 solar mass.

Method of determining cosmological parameter ranges with samples of candles with an intrinsic distribution

In this paper, the effect of the intrinsic distribution of cosmological candles is investigated. We find that, in the case of a narrow distribution, the deviation of the observed modulus of sources from the expected central value could be estimated within a ceratin range. We thus introduce a lower and upper limits of $χ^{2}$, $χ_{\min}^{2}$ and $ χ_{\max}^{2}$, to estimate cosmological parameters by applying the conventional minimizing $χ^{2}$ method. We apply this method to a gamma-ray burst (GRB) sample as well as to a combined sample including this GRB sample and an SN Ia sample. Our analysis shows that: a) in the case of assuming an intrinsic distribution of candles of the GRB sample, the effect of the distribution is obvious and should not be neglected; b) taking into account this effect would lead to a poorer constraint of the cosmological parameter ranges. The analysis suggests that in the attempt of constraining the cosmological model with current GRB samples, the results tend to be worse than what previously thought if the mentioned intrinsic distribution does exist.

Monopole-charged pulsars and relevant issues

The aligned pulsars whose rotation axes and magnetic dipole axes are parallel should be positively charged. The total charge of pulsars is calculated after considering the electromagnetic field in and out the star under a specific condition. The statistical relation between the pulsar's rotation energy loss rate (or the period derivative) and the period may hint that the millisecond radio pulsars with small periods could be low-mass bare strange stars.

The Current Flows in Pulsar Magnetospheres

The global structure of the current flows in pulsar magnetospheres is investigated, with rough calculations of the elements in the magnetospheric circuit. It is emphasized that the potential of critical field lines is the same as that of interstellar medium, and that the pulsars whose rotation axes and magnetic dipole axes are parallel should be positively charged, in order to close the pulsar's current flows. The statistical relation between the radio luminosity and pulsar's electric charge (or the spindown power) may hint that the millisecond pulsars could be low-mass bare strange stars.

Characteristics of profiles of gamma-ray burst pulses associated with the Doppler effect of fireballs

In this paper, we derive in a much detail the formula of count rates, in terms of the integral of time, of gamma-ray bursts in the framework of fireballs, where the Doppler effect of the expanding fireball surface is the key factor to be concerned. Effects arising from the limit of the time delay due to the limited regions of the emitting areas in the fireball surface and other factors are investigated. Our analysis shows that the formula of the count rate of fireballs can be expressed as a function of $τ$ which is the observation time scale relative to the dynamical time scale of the fireball. The profile of light curves of fireballs depends only on the relative time scale, entirely independent of the real time scale and the real size of the objects. It displays in detail how a cutoff tail, or a turn over, feature (called a cutoff tail problem) in the decay phase of a light curve can be formed. This feature is a consequence of a hot spot in the fireball surface, moving towards the observer, and was observed in a few cases previously. By performing fits to the count rate light curves of six sample sources, we show how to obtain some physical parameters from the observed profile of the count rate of GRBs. In addition, the analysis reveals that the Doppler effect of fireballs could lead to a power law relationship between the $FWHM$ of pulses and energy, which were observed previously by many authors.
