Effective model and electron correlations in trilayer nickelate superconductor La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$

Recently, signatures of superconductivity with critical temperature from 20 to 30 K have been reported in pressured trilayer nickelate La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ through a pressure-induced structure transition. Here we explore the evolution of electronic structures and electronic correlations in different phases of La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ under corresponding pressure regions, by using density functional theory (DFT) combined with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Similar to bilayer superconductor La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7}$, the electronic bands in superconducting La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ are dominated by Ni-3$d_{x^2-y^2}$ and 3$d_{z^2}$ orbits near the Fermi level, in contrast, the inner Ni-O plane in La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ generates a doublet hole-pocket Fermi surfaces around the Brillouin-zone corner, meanwhile one branch of the Ni-$3d_{z^2}$ bands is pushed very close above the Fermi level, which can induce an electron pocket through small electron doping. The DFT+DMFT simulations suggest that the electronic correlations only give minor modification to the Fermi surfaces, meanwhile the Ni-$3d_{z^2}$ and 3$d_{x^2-y^2}$ states on outer Ni-O layers have considerable greater mass enhancements than on the inner layer. The sensitiveness of electronic structure under doping and unique layer dependence of correlation suggest a distinct superconducting mechanism with respect to bilayer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7}$. Based on the DFT and DFT+DMFT simulations, we eventually derive a trilayer effective tight-binding model, which can produce rather precise electronic bands and Fermi surfaces, hence can serve as an appropriate model to further study the superconducting mechanism and paring symmetry in trilayer La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$.

Phase evolution of Ce-based heavy-fermion superconductors under compression: a combined first-principle and effective-model study

In many Ce-based superconductors, superconducting (SC) phases emerge or can be tuned in proximity to the antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum critical point (QCP), but so far the explicit phase evolution near the QCP lack theoretical understanding. Here, by combing the density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) with effective-model calculations, we provide a theoretical description for Ce-based superconductors under compression. DFT+DMFT calculations for the normal states reveal that the Kondo hybridizations are significantly enhanced under compression, while the initially localized $f$ electrons become fully itinerant via localized-itinerant crossover. We then construct an effective model and show that with the extracted Kondo coupling and RKKY exchange strengths from first-principle calculations, the ground-state phases of these materials can be properly predicted. We also show that the coexistence of magnetic correlation and Kondo hybridization can drive AF+SC coexisting state in narrow compression region. Under compression, competition between Kondo and RKKY interactions can drive successive transitions, from AF phase to AF+SC coexisting phase, then to paramagnetic SC phase via an AF transition which generates the QCP, and finally to normal Kondo paramagnetic (KP) phase through an SC-KP transition induced by the localized-itinerant crossover. Our study gives proper explanation to the pressure-induced QCP and SC-KP transition, and to the phase evolution in pressured Ce-based superconductors, and can help to understand the SC states around the ferromagnetic quantum transition points in uranium-based superconductors.

Node-line Dirac semimetal manipulated by Kondo mechanism in nonsymmorphic CePt$_2$Si$_2$

Dirac node lines (DNLs) are characterized by Dirac-type linear crossings between valence and conduction bands along one-dimensional node lines in the Brillouin zone (BZ). Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) usually shifts the degeneracy at the crossings thus destroys DNLs, and so far the reported DNLs in a few materials are non-interacting type, making the search for robust interacting DNLs in real materials appealing. Here, via first-principle calculations, we reveal that Kondo interaction together with nonsymmorphic lattice symmetries can drive a robust interacting DNLs in a Kondo semimetal CePt_2Si_2, and the feature of DNLs can be significantly manipulated by Kondo behavior in different temperature regions. Based on the density function theory combining dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT), we predict a transition to Kondo-coherent state at coherent temperature T_coh= 80 K upon cooling, verified by temperature dependence of Ce-4f self-energy, Kondo resonance peak, magnetic susceptibility and momentum-resolved spectral. Below T_coh, well-resolved narrow heavy-fermion bands emerge near the Fermi level, constructing clearly visualized interacting DNLs locating at the BZ boundary, in which the Dirac fermions have strongly enhanced effective mass and reduced velocity. In contrast, above a crossover temperature T_KS =600 K, the destruction of local Kondo screening drives non-interacting DNLs which are comprised by light conduction electrons at the same location. These DNLs are protected by lattice nonsymmorphic symmetries thus robust under intrinsic strong SOC. Our proposal of DNLs which can be significantly manipulated according to Kondo behavior provides an unique realization of interacting Dirac semimetals in real strongly correlated materials, and serves as a convenient platform to investigate the effect of electronic correlations on topological materials.

Valence transition in topological Kondo insulator

We investigate the valence transition in three-dimensional topological Kondo insulator through slave-boson analysis of periodic Anderson model. By including the effect of intra-atomic Coulomb correlation $U_{fc}$ between conduction and local electrons, we find a first-order valence transition from Kondo region to mixed valence upon ascending of local level above a critical $U_{fc}$, and this valence transition usually occurs very close to or simultaneously with a topological transition. Near the parameter region of zero-temperature valence transition, rise of temperature can generate a thermal valence transition from mixed valence to Kondo region, accompanied by a first-order topological transition. Remarkably, above a critical $U_{fc}$ which is considerable smaller than that generating paramagnetic valence transition, the original continuous antiferromagnetic transition is shifted to first order one, at which a discontinuous valence shift takes place. Upon increased $U_{fc}$, the paramagnetic valence transition approaches then converges with the first-order antiferromagnetic transition, leaving an significant valence shift on the magnetic boundary. The continuous antiferromagnetic transition, first-order antiferromagnetic transition, paramagnetic valence transition and topological transitions are all summarized in a global phase diagram. Our proposed exotic transition processes can help to understand the thermal valence variation as well as the valence shift around the pressure-induced magnetic transition in topological Kondo insulator candidates and in other heavy-fermion systems.

Magnetic and topological transitions in three-dimensional topological Kondo insulator

By using an extended slave-boson method, we draw a global phase diagram summarizing both magnetic phases and paramagnetic (PM) topological insulating phases (TI$_s$) in three-dimensional topological Kondo insulator (TKI). By including electron hopping (EH) up to third neighbor, we identify four strong topological insulating (STI) phases and two weak topological insulating (WTI) phases, then the PM phase diagrams characterizing topological transitions between these TI$_s$ are depicted as functions of EH, $f$-electron energy level and hybridization constant. We also find an insulator-metal transition from a STI phase which has surface Fermi rings and spin textures in qualitative agreement to TKI candidate SmB$_6$. In weak hybridization regime, antiferromagnetic (AF) order naturally arises in the phase diagrams, and depending on how the magnetic boundary crosses the PM topological transition lines, AF phases are classified into AF topological insulator (AFTI) and non-topological AF insulator (nAFI), according to their $\mathcal{Z}_2$ indices. In two small regions of parameter space, two distinct topological transition processes between AF phases occur, leading to two types of AFTI, showing distinguishable surface dispersions around their Dirac points.

Nematic state stabilized by off-site Coulomb interaction in iron-based superconductors

Using a variational Monte Carlo method, we investigate the nematic state in iron-base superconductors based on a three-band Hubbard model. Our results demonstrate that the nematic state, formed by introducing an anisotropic hopping order into the projected wave function, can arise in the underdoped regime when a realistic off-site Coulomb interaction $V$ is considered. {\color {red} We demonstrate that the off-site Coulomb interaction $V$, which is neglected so far in the analysis of iron-base superconductors, make a dominant contribution to the stabilization of nematic state. We calculate the doping dependencies of the anisotropic properties such as the unequal occupation of $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals, anisotropies of kinetic energy and spin correlations, and show that they are all suppressed upon electron doping, which are consistent with the intrinsic anisotropies observed by optical spectrum measurement and ARPES experiments.

Coexistence of localized and itinerant magnetism in newly discovered iron-selenide superconductor LiFeO2Fe2Se2

The electronic structure and magnetism of LiFeO$_{2}$Fe$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ are investigated using the first-principle calculations. The ground state is N$\acute{e}$el antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mott insulating state for Fe1 with localized magnetism in LiFeO$_{2}$ layer and striped AFM metallic state for Fe2 with itinerant magnetism in Fe$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ layer, accompanied with a weak interlayer AFM coupling between Fe1 and Fe2 ions, resulting in a coexistence of localized and itinerant magnetism. Moreover, the layered LiFeO$_{2}$ is found to be more than an insulating block layer but responsible for enhanced AFM correlation in Fe$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ layer through the interlayer magnetic coupling. The interplay between the magnetisms of Fe1 and Fe2 introduces a control mechanism for spin fluctuations associated with superconductivity in iron-based superconductors.

Spontaneous Fermi surface deformation in the three-band Hubbard model: A variational Monte Carlo study

We perform a variational Monte Carlo study on spontaneous d-wave form Fermi surface deformation ($d$FSD) within the three-band Hubbard model. It is found that the variational energy of a projected Fermi sea is lowered by introducing an anisotropy between the hopping integrals along the x and y directions. Our results show that the $d$FSD state has the strongest tendency at half-filling in the absence of magnetism, and disappears as the hole concentration increases to $n_h\approx 1.15$. This is qualitatively in agreement with the mean field analysis and the exact diagonalization calculation for the one-band models, and provides a qualitative explanation to the "intra-unit-cell" electronic nematicity revealed by the scanning tunneling microscopy. An analysis of the dependence of $d$FSD on the parameters of the three-band model indicates that the copper on-site Coulomb interaction, the nearest-neighbor copper-oxygen repulsion, and the charge-transfer energy have a remarkable positive effect on $d$FSD.

Band-filling and correlation controlling electronic properties and magnetism in K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_{2}$: A slave boson study

In this paper we investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_{2}$ materials at different band fillings utilizing the multi-orbital Kotliar-Ruckenstein's slave-boson mean field approach. We find that at three-quarter filling, corresponding to KFe$_{2}$Se$_{2}$, the ground state is a paramagnetic bad metal. Through band renormalization analysis and comparison with the angle-resolved photoemission spectra data, we identify that KFe$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ is also an intermediate correlated system, similar to iron-pnictide systems. At two-third filling, corresponding to the Fe$^{2+}$-based systems, the ground state is a striped antiferromagnetic (SAFM) metal with spin density wave gap partially opened near the Fermi level. In comparison, at half filling case, corresponding to the Fe$^{3+}$-based compounds, besides SAFM, a $N\acute{e}el$ antiferromagnetic metallic ground state without orbital ordering is observed in the intermediate correlation range, and an orbital selective Mott phase (OSMP) accompanied with an intermediate-spin to high-spin transition is also found. These results demonstrate that the band filling and correlation control the electronic state, Fermi surface topology and magnetism in K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_{2}$.
