Stochastic thermodynamics of an electron-spin-resonance quantum dot system

We present a stochastic thermodynamics analysis of an electron-spin-resonance pumped quantum dot device in the Coulomb-blocked regime, where a pure spin current is generated without an accompanying net charge current. Based on a generalized quantum master equation beyond secular approximation, quantum coherences are accounted for in terms of an effective average spin in the Floquet basis. Elegantly, this effective spin undergoes a precession about an effective magnetic field, which originates from the non-secular treatment and energy renormalization. It is shown that the interaction between effective spin and effective magnetic field may have the dominant roles to play in both energy transport and irreversible entropy production. In the stationary limit, the energy and entropy balance relations are also established based on the theory of counting statistics.

Deterministic transfer of multiqubit GHZ entangled states and quantum secret sharing between different cavities

We propose a way for transferring Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entangled states from $n$ qubits in one cavity onto another $n$ qubits in the other cavity. It is shown that $n$-qubit GHZ states $α\left\vert 00...0\right\rangle +β\left\vert 11...1\right\rangle $ with arbitrary degree of entanglement can be transferred deterministically. Both of the GHZ state transfer and the operation time are not dependent on the number of qubits, and there is no need of measurement. This proposal is quite general and can be applied to accomplish the same task for a wide range of physical qubits. Furthermore, note that the $n$-qubit GHZ state $α\left\vert 00...0\right\rangle +β\left\vert 11...1\right\rangle $ is a quantum-secret-sharing code for encoding a single-qubit arbitrary pure state $α\left\vert 0\right\rangle +β\left\vert 1\right\rangle $. Thus, this work also provides a way to transfer quantum secret sharing from $n$ qubits in one cavity to another $n$ qubits in the other cavity.

Transferring multiqubit entanglement onto memory qubits in a decoherence-free subspace

Different from the previous works on generating entangled states, this work is focused on how to transfer the prepared entangled states onto memory qubits for protecting them against decoherence. We here consider a physical system consisting of $n$ operation qubits and $2n$ memory qubits placed in a cavity or coupled to a resonator. A method is presented for transferring $n$-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entangled states from the operation qubits (i.e., information processing cells) onto the memory qubits (i.e., information memory elements with long decoherence time). The transferred GHZ states are encoded in a decoherence-free subspace against collective dephasing, and thus can be immune from decoherence induced by a dephasing environment. In addition, the state transfer procedure has nothing to do with the number of qubits, the operation time does not increase with the number of qubits, and no measurement is needed for the state transfer. This proposal can be applied to a wide range of hybrid qubits such as natural atoms and artificial atoms (e.g., various solid-state qubits).

Four-junction superconducting circuit

We develop a theory for the quantum circuit consisting of a superconducting loop interrupted by four Josephson junctions and pierced by a magnetic flux (either static or time-dependent). In addition to the similarity with the typical three-junction flux qubit in the double-well regime, we demonstrate the difference of the four-junction circuit from its three-junction analogue, including its advantages over the latter. Moreover, the four-junction circuit in the single-well regime is also investigated. Our theory provides a tool to explore the physical properties of this four-junction superconducting circuit.

Unraveling of a generalized quantum Markovian master equation and its application in feedback control of a charge qubit

In the context of a charge qubit under continuous monitoring by a single electron transistor, we propose an unraveling of the generalized quantum Markovian master equation into an ensemble of individual quantum trajectories for stochastic point process. A suboptimal feedback algorism is implemented into individual quantum trajectories to protect a desired pure state. Coherent oscillations of the charge qubit could be maintained in principle for an arbitrarily long time in case of sufficient feedback strength. The effectiveness of the feedback control is also reflected in the detector's noise spectrum. The signal-to-noise ratio rises significantly with increasing feedback strength such that it could even exceed the Korotkov-Averin bound in quantum measurement, manifesting almost ideal quantum coherent oscillations of the qubit. The proposed unraveling and feedback protocol may open up the prospect to sustain ideal coherent oscillations of a charge qubit in quantum computation algorithms.

Qubit detection with a T-shaped double quantum dot detector

We propose to continuously monitor a charge qubit by utilizing a T-shaped double quantum dot detector, in which the qubit and double dot are arranged in such a unique way that the detector turns out to be particularly susceptible to the charge states of the qubit. Special attention is paid to the regime where acquisition of qubit information and backaction upon the measured system exhibit nontrivial correlation. The intrinsic dynamics of the qubit gives rise to dynamical blockade of tunneling events through the detector, resulting in a super-Poissonian noise. However, such a pronounced enhancement of detector's shot noise does not necessarily produce a rising dephasing rate. In contrast, an inhibition of dephasing is entailed by the reduction of information acquisition in the dynamically blockaded regimes. We further reveal the important impact of the charge fluctuations on the measurement characteristics. Noticeably, under the condition of symmetric junction capacitances the noise pedestal of circuit current is completely suppressed, leading to a divergent signal-to-noise ratio, and eventually to a violation of the Korotkov-Averin bound in quantum measurement. Our study offers the possibility for a double dot detector to reach the quantum limited effectiveness in a transparent manner.

Generating multipartite entangled states of qubits distributed in different cavities

Cavity-based large-scale quantum information processing (QIP) needs a large number of qubits and placing all of them in a single cavity quickly runs into many fundamental and practical problems such as the increase of cavity decay rate and decrease of qubit-cavity coupling strength. Therefore, future QIP most likely will require quantum networks consisting of a large number of cavities, each hosting and coupled to multiple qubits. In this work, we propose a way to prepare a $W$-class entangled state of spatially-separated multiple qubits in different cavities, which are connected to a coupler qubit. Because no cavity photon is excited, decoherence caused by the cavity decay is greatly suppressed during the entanglement preparation. This proposal needs only one coupler qubit and one operational step, and does not require using a classical pulse, so that the engineering complexity is much reduced and the operation is greatly simplified. As an example of the experimental implementation, we further give a numerical analysis, which shows that high-fidelity generation of the $W$ state using three superconducting phase qubits each embedded in a one-dimensional transmission line resonator is feasible within the present circuit QED technique. The proposal is quite general and can be applied to accomplish the same task with other types of qubits such as superconducting flux qubits, charge qubits, quantum dots, nitrogen-vacancy centers and atoms.

Conditional spin counting statistics as a probe of Coulomb interaction and spin-resolved bunching

Full counting statistics is a powerful tool to characterize the noise and correlations in transport through mesoscopic systems. In this work, we propose the theory of conditional spin counting statistics, i.e., the statistical fluctuations of spin-up (down) current given the observation of the spin-down (up) current. In the context of transport through a single quantum dot, it is demonstrated that a strong Coulomb interaction leads to a conditional spin counting statistics that exhibits a substantial change in comparison to that without Coulomb repulsion. It thus can be served as an effective way to probe the Coulomb interactions in mesoscopic transport systems. In case of spin polarized transport, it is further shown that the conditional spin counting statistics offers a transparent tool to reveal the spin-resolved bunching behavior.

Non-Markovian dynamics and noise characteristics in continuous measurement of a solid-state charge qubit

We investigate the non-Markovian characteristics in continuous measurement of a charge qubit by a quantum point contact. The backflow of information from the reservoir to the system in the non-Markovian domain gives rise to strikingly different qubit relaxation and dephasing in comparison with the Markovian case. The intriguing non-Markovian dynamics is found to have a direct impact on the output noise feature of the detector. Unambiguously, we observe that the non-Markovian memory effect results in an enhancement of the signal-to-noise ratio, which can even exceed the upper limit of ``4'', leading thus to the violation of the Korotkov-Averin bound in quantum measurement. Our study thus may open new possibilities to improve detector's measurement efficiency in a direct and transparent way.

Spin-resolved bunching and noise characteristics in double quantum dots coupled to ferromagnetic electrodes

We study spin-resolved noise in Coulomb blockaded double quantum dots coupled to ferromagnetic electrodes. The modulation of the interdot coupling and spin polarization in the electrodes gives rise to an intriguing dynamical spin $\uparrow$-$\uparrow$ ($\downarrow$-$\downarrow$) blockade mechanism: Bunching of up (down) spins due to dynamical blockade of an up (down) spin. In contrast to the conventional dynamical spin $\uparrow$-$\downarrow$ bunching (bunching of up spins entailed by dynamical blockade of a down spin), this new bunching behavior is found to be intimately associated with the spin mutual-correlation, i.e., the noise fluctuation between opposite spin currents. We further demonstrate that the dynamical spin $\uparrow$-$\uparrow$ and $\uparrow$-$\downarrow$ bunching of tunneling events may be coexistent in the regime of weak interdot coupling and low spin polarization.

Full counting statistics of renormalized dynamics in open quantum transport system

The internal dynamics of a double quantum dot system is renormalized due to coupling respectively with transport electrodes and a dissipative heat bath. Their essential differences are identified unambiguously in the context of full counting statistics. The electrode coupling caused level detuning renormalization gives rise to a fast-to-slow transport mechanism, which is not resolved at all in the average current, but revealed uniquely by pronounced super-Poissonian shot noise and skewness. The heat bath coupling introduces an interdot coupling renormalization, which results in asymmetric Fano factor and an intriguing change of line shape in the skewness.

Full Counting statistics of level renormalization in electron transport through double quantum dots

We examine the full counting statistics of electron transport through double quantum dots coupled in series, with particular attention being paid to the unique features originating from level renormalization. It is clearly illustrated that the energy renormalization gives rise to a dynamic charge blockade mechanism, which eventually results in super-Poissonian noise. Coupling of the double dots to an external heat bath leads to dephasing and relaxation mechanisms, which are demonstrated to suppress the noise in a unique way.

Renormalized dynamics in charge qubit measurements by a single electron transistor

We investigate charge qubit measurements using a single electron transistor, with focus on the backaction-induced renormalization of qubit parameters. It is revealed the renormalized dynamics leads to a number of intriguing features in the detector's noise spectra, and therefore needs to be accounted for to properly understand the measurement result. Noticeably, the level renormalization gives rise to a strongly enhanced signal-to-noise ratio, which can even exceed the universal upper bound imposed quantum mechanically on linear-response detectors.

Real-time counting of single electron tunneling through a T-shaped double quantum dot system

Real-time detection of single electron tunneling through a T-shaped double quantum dot is simulated, based on a Monte Carlo scheme. The double dot is embedded in a dissipative environment and the presence of electrons on the double dot is detected with a nearby quantum point contact. We demonstrate directly the bunching behavior in electron transport, which leads eventually to a super-Poissonian noise. Particularly, in the context of full counting statistics, we investigate the essential difference between the dephasing mechanisms induced by the quantum point contact detection and the coupling to the external phonon bath. A number of intriguing noise features associated with various transport mechanisms are revealed.

Quantum logical gates with four-level SQUIDs coupled to a superconducting resonator

We propose a way for realizing a two-qubit controlled phase gate with superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) coupled to a superconducting resonator. In this proposal, the two lowest levels of each SQUID serve as the logical states and two intermediate levels of each SQUID are used for the gate realization. We show that neither adjustment of SQUID level spacings during the gate operation nor uniformity in SQUID parameters is required by this proposal. In addition, this proposal does not require the adiabatic passage or a second-order detuning and thus the gate is much faster.

Switchable coupling between charge and flux qubits

We propose a hybrid quantum circuit with both charge and flux qubits connected to a large Josephson junction that gives rise to an effective inter-qubit coupling controlled by the external magnetic flux. This switchable inter-qubit coupling can be used to transfer back and forth an arbitrary superposition state between the charge qubit and the flux qubit working at the optimal point. The proposed hybrid circuit provides a promising quantum memory because the flux qubit at the optimal point can store the tranferred quantum state for a relatively long time.

Variable-frequency-controlled coupling in charge qubit circuits: Effects of microwave field on qubit-state readout

To implement quantum information processing, microwave fields are often used to manipulate superconuducting qubits. We study how the coupling between superconducting charge qubits can be controlled by variable-frequency magnetic fields. We also study the effects of the microwave fields on the readout of the charge-qubit states. The measurement of the charge-qubit states can be used to demonstrate the statistical properties of photons.
