Gravitational odd-parity perturbation of a Horndeski hairy black hole: quasinormal mode and parameter constraint

During the binary black hole coalescence, gravitational waves emitted at the ringdown stage can be well described by black hole perturbation theory, where the quasinormal modes (QNMs) become the important ingredient in modeling the pattern waveform. In general relativity (GR), the QNMs can be obtained from solving the Regge-Wheeler (RW) equation of a non-rotating black hole. While in Horndeski gravity, the isospectrality between the odd and even parity perturbations is broken due to the scalar field, but the odd perturbation equation can be simplified into a modified RW equation from the perturbed action. In this paper, we propose a new auxiliary field and tortoise coordinate to refine the modified RW equation in Horndeski gravity, and calculate the QNMs frequencies of the odd perturbation of a specific hairy black hole. It is found that this proposal not only cures the superluminal propagation addressed in the previous literature, but also hold the original QNM spectrum of the odd perturbation. Moreover, our results indicate that such a Horndeski hairy black hole is stable under the odd perturbation, which is also verified by the time evolution of the perturbation. In particular, in contrary to GR, the modes with $\ell=2$ can decay faster than modes with $\ell>2$ for a certain range of the Horndeski hair, and the link between the null geodesics and QNM for the odd perturbation in the current theory is violated. Then, we use the ringdown QNMs to preliminarily investigate the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) rescaled measurement error of the Horndeski hair. We obtain significant effects of the angular momentum and overtone on the error bound of the hair parameter. We hope that our findings could inspire more theoretical and phenomenological work on the test of the no-hair theorem of black hole using gravitational wave physics.

The underlying black hole phase transitions in an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton model with a holographic critical point

The Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton model exhibits a first-order phase transition curve that terminates at a holographic critical endpoint, offering intriguing insights into the phase diagram of the dual system living on the boundary. However, the specific instability within the underlying spacetime that triggers the formation of the hairy black hole remains somewhat obscure. This raises the question of whether one of the hairy black hole phases represents a superconducting or scalarized state and how the two distinct phases merge into a indistinguishable one at the critical point. This work investigates the associated black hole phase transition and the underlying instabilities by exploring a specific Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton model. The approach aims to provide transparent insights into the black hole phase transitions in the bulk. By introducing a nonminimal coupling between a massive real scalar field and a Maxwell field in a five-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime, we identify two types of scalarization corresponding to tachyonic instabilities in the ultraviolet and infrared regions. These distinct instabilities lead to a first-order phase transition between two phases in the $μ-T$ phase diagram. Furthermore, this first-order transition terminates at a critical point, beyond which the curve turns back, and the transition becomes a numerically elusive third-order one. Although one does not encounter a critical endpoint, the model still offers a consistent interpretation for the observed {\it cross-over} in the low baryon density region. We analyze the thermodynamic properties of the scalarized hairy black holes and discuss the implications of our findings.

Shear viscoelasticity in anisotropic holographic axion model

In this work, we investigate the shear elasticity and the shear viscosity in a simple holographic axion model with broken translational symmetry and rotational symmetry in space via the perturbation computation. We find that, in the case of spontaneous symmetry breaking, the broken translations and anisotropy both enhance the shear elasticity of the system. While in all cases, the broken symmetries introduce a double suppression on the shear viscosity, which is in contrast to the result from the study of the p-wave holographic superfluid where the shear viscosity is enhanced when the rotational symmetry is broken spontaneously.

Effects of hair on the image of a rotating black hole illuminated by a thin accretion disk

In this paper, we investigate the shadow and optical appearance of the hairy Kerr black hole illuminated by a thin accretion disk, the materials of which outside the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) move on the equatorial circular orbit, while inside the ISCO they quickly plunge into the black hole. The deformation parameter $α$ and hair parameter $l_o$ are found to influence the motions of accretion as well as the redshift effect of the photon, such that they significantly affect the shadow and image of the hairy Kerr black hole. Especially, these two parameters have competing effects on the size of the black hole's shadow, and significantly increase the width of photon ring. This study provides a preliminary theoretical prediction that the image of the hairy Kerr black hole, especially the photon ring structure, may be used to constrain the hair parameters with future high-precision astronomical observation.

Observational appearances of an inner extremal regular black hole illuminated by various accretion flows

This paper investigates the observational appearances of an inner extremal regular black hole(IERBH) illuminated by various types of accretion models. The study reveals that when the BH is illuminated by specific accretion flows, the effects of quantum gravity become more pronounced, significantly impacting key observational features such as the shadow radius, photon ring, and total observed intensity. Specifically, the introduction of a more realistic radially infalling spherical accretion flow further accentuates these differences. This dynamic flow results in a darker central region in the BH image due to the Doppler effect, which modulates the observed intensity based on the relative motion of the infalling matter. The shadow radius and total observed intensity are notably affected by the quantum correction parameters, providing additional signatures that distinguish regular BHs from their classical counterparts.

Distinguishing black holes with and without spontaneous scalarization in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories via optical features

Spontaneous scalarization in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory admits both vacuum-general relativity (GR) and scalarized hairy black holes as valid solutions, which provides a distinctive signature of new physics in strong gravity regime. In this paper, we shall examine the optical features of Gauss-Bonnet black holes with spontaneous scalarization, which is governed by the coupling parameter $λ$. We find that the photon sphere, critical impact parameter and innermost stable circular orbit all decrease as the increasing of $λ$. Using observable data from Event Horizon Telescope, we establish the upper limit for $λ$. Then we construct the optical appearances of the scalarized black holes illuminated by various thin accretions. Our findings reveal that the scalarized black holes consistently exhibit smaller shadow sizes and reduced brightness compared to Schwarzschild black holes. Notably, in the case of thin spherical accretion, the shadow of the scalarized black hole is smaller, but the surrounding bright ring is more pronounced. Our results highlight the observable features of the scalarized black holes, providing a distinguishable probe from their counterpart in GR in strong gravity regime.

Using the shadow of a black hole to examine the energy exchange between axion matter and a rotating black hole

We find that a \textit{slowly} rotating axion-modified black hole resulting from the backreaction of an axion field on a rotating Kerr black hole can have a \textit{D-shaped} shadow as that for a \textit{highly} counter-rotating Kerr black hole. This attributes to the fact that the energy exchange between the axion matter and the black hole influences the rotation of the black hole, so the black hole angular momentum first decreases to zero and then the black hole starts to rotate to the opposite direction. Further increasing the coupling leads to \textit{``human-face-like" shaped} shadows and new lensing due to the chaotic scattering, which are novel and drastically different from Kerr black hole. Our analysis provides the first counterexample to that slowly rotating black hole has nearly circular shadow.

Nonexistence of quantum black and white hole horizons in an improved dynamic approach

In this paper, we study the quantum geometric effects near the locations where classical black hole horizons used to appear in Einstein's classical theory, within the framework of an improved dynamic approach, in which the internal region of a black hole is modeled by the Kantowski-Sachs (KS) spacetime and the two polymerization parameters are functions of the phase space variables. Our detailed analysis shows that the effects are so strong that black and white hole horizons of the effective quantum theory do not exist at all and instead are replaced by transition surfaces, across which the metric coefficients and their inverses are smooth and remain finite, as are the corresponding curvatures, including the Kretschmann scalar. These surfaces always separate trapped regions from anti-trapped regions. The number of such surfaces is infinite, so the corresponding KS spacetimes become geodesically complete, and no black and white hole-like structures exist in this scheme.

Timelike bound orbits and pericenter precession around black hole with conformally coupled scalar hair

We investigate the geodesic motions of timelike particles around a static hairy black hole with conformally coupled scalar field. We mainly focus on the effects of the scalar charge and electric charge on the marginally bound orbits (MBO), innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO) and on the precessing orbits around this black hole. Our results show that both the scalar and electric charges suppress the energy as well as the angular momentum of the particles in the bound orbits. Then, we study the relativistic periastron precessions of the particles and constrain the charge parameters by employing the observational result of the S2 star's precession in SgrA*. It is found that the constraints on the charge parameters from S2 star's motion are tighter than those from black hole shadow. Finally, we analyze the periodic motions of the particles and figure out samples of periodic orbits' configurations around the hairy black hole.

Images of hairy Reissner-Nordström black hole illuminated by static accretions

We investigate the shadow and optical appearance of the hairy Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole illuminated by two toy models of static accretion. The hairy RN black hole was constructed in the gravitation decoupling approach to describe the deformation of a Schwarzschild black hole due to the inclusion of additional arbitrary source (scalar field, tensor field, fluidlike dark matter, etc). So it is characterized by the parameters: mass ($M$), deformation factor ($α$), electric charge ($Q$) and the additional hairy charge ($l_o$), differentiating from the case in RN black hole. Though the specific background theory that results in this hairy RN black hole is still tricky, here we shall focus on the novel observable features introduced by the hair of this black hole. First, we find that for the hairy RN black hole, the event horizon, radius of photon sphere and critical impact parameter all increase as the increasings of $Q$ and $l_o$, but decrease as $α$ grows. The three characterized parameters are found to have significant effects on the photon trajectories, shadows and images of hairy RN black hole surrounded by the static accretion disk and spherical accretion, respectively. Particularly, both $Q$ and $l_o$ have mutually reinforcing effects on the optical appearance and shadows of the hairy RN black hole, which implies that we may not distinguish the electric charge and hairy charge from the shadow and image of black hole in this scenario. Additionally, because of the competing effects of the charge parameters ($Q, l_o$) and the deviation parameter $α$ on the observed intensities of brightness, the optical appearance between the hairy RN black hole and RN black hole could have degeneracies, indicating the indistinguishability. Our current results contribute more to the phenomenal aspects which could be helpful to build the background theory of hairy RN black hole.

Precessing and periodic timelike orbits and their potential applications in Einsteinian cubic gravity

Einsteinian cubic gravity (ECG) is the most general theory up to cubic order in curvature, which have the same graviton spectrum as the Einstein theory. In this paper, we investigate the geodesic motions of timelike particles around the four dimensional asymptotically flat black holes in ECG, and discuss their potential applications when connecting them with recent observational results. We first explore the effects of the cubic couplings on the marginally bound orbits (MBO), innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO) and on the periodic orbits around the Einsteinian cubic black hole. We find that comparing to Schwarzschild black hole in general relativity, the cubic coupling enhances the energy as well as the angular momentum for all the bound orbits of the particles. Then, we derive the relativistic periastron precessions of the particles and give a preliminary bound on the cubic coupling employing the observational result of the S2 star' precession in SgrA*. Finally, after calculating the periodic orbits' configurations, we preliminarily evaluate the gravitational waveform radiated from several periodic orbits in one complete period of a test object which orbits a supermassive Einsteinian cubic black hole. Our studies could be helpful for us to better understand the gravitational structure of the theory with high curvatures.

Trajectories of photons around a rotating black hole with unusual asymptotics

Most black hole solutions are characterized with asymptotically flat, or asymptotically (anti) de-Sitter behaviors, but some black holes with unusual asymptotics have also been constructed, which is believed to provide remarkable insights into our understanding of the nature of gravity. In this paper, focusing on a rotating black hole with unusual asymptotics in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton (EMD) theory, we innovatively analyze the photons' trajectories around this black hole background, showing that the unusual asymptotics has significant influences on the photons' trajectories. We expect that our analysis could give more insights in the scenario of black holes' shadow and image.

Black holes with scalar hair: Extending from and beyond the Schwarzschild solution

We construct novel scalarized black hole (BH) solutions beyond the general relativity (GR) framework. These scalarized BH solutions are extended from the Schwarzschild one and the non-Schwarzschild one in the pure Einstein-Weyl gravity. By studying the BH entropy and free energy, we demonstrate that the scalarized BH extending from the Schwarzschild one exhibits thermodynamically preferred. We obtain these novel solutions by directly solving the full fourth-order equations of motion. This narrows the problematic solution space obtained by commonly adopted second-order reduction to physically valid spaces. Our findings also unveil the evasion of the no-hair theorem within the realm of higher-derivative gravity.

Peculiar properties in quasi-normal spectra from loop quantum gravity effect

We investigate the quasi-normal mode (QNM) spectra for scalar and electromagnetic fields over a covairant loop quantum gravity black hole (LQG-BH). For the fundamental modes, the LQG effect reduces the oscillations in the scalar field, however it induces stronger oscillations in the electromagnetic field, comparing to the classical case. Under the scalar field perturbation, the system enjoys faster decaying modes with more oscillations than the electromagnetic field. Some peculiar phenomena emerge in the QNM spectra with higher overtones. A notable feature is the substantial divergence observed in the first several overtones from their Schwarzschild counterparts, with this discrepancy magnifying as the overtone number increases. Another remarkable phenomenon in higher overtones is that the QNFs of the scalar field with $l=0$ exhibit an oscillatory behavior as the quantum parameter $r_0$ increases significantly. These oscillations intensify with the rising overtone number. We hypothesize that this oscillatory pattern may be associated with the extremal effect.

Diagnosing quantum phase transition via holographic entanglement entropy at finite temperature

We investigate the behavior of the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) in proximity to the quantum critical points (QCPs) of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axions (EMDA) model. Since both the metallic phase and the insulating phase are characterized by distinct IR geometries, we used to expect that the HEE itself characterizes the QCPs. This expectation is validated for certain cases, however, we make a noteworthy observation: for a specific scenario where $-1<γ\leq -1/3$, with $γ$ as a coupling parameter, it is not the HEE itself but rather the second-order derivative of HEE with respect to the lattice wave number that effectively characterizes quantum phase transitions (QPTs). This distinction arises due to the influence of thermal effects. These findings present novel insights into the interplay between HEE and QPTs in the context of the MIT, and have significant implications for studying QPTs at finite temperatures.

Scalar field perturbation around a rotating hairy black hole: quasinormal modes, quasibound states and superradiant instability

We consider the quasinormal modes, quasibound states and superradiant instability of a rotating hairy black hole, which possesses a Horndeski hair as deviation from Kerr black hole, under the perturbation of massive scalar field. With the use of the matrix method, we mainly calculate the eigenfrequencies related to those modes of the perturbation. Under the perturbation of the massless scalar field, the Horndeski hair and spin parameter have significant influences on the quasinormal frequency, but its imaginary part is always finite negative and no unstable mode is found. Under the perturbation of the massive scalar field, we focus on the eigenfrequencies of quasibound states and find the modes of which the imaginary part of eigenfrequencies is positive, indicating that the black hole undergoes superradiant instability. Then we scan the parameters and figure out a diagram in the space of Horndeski hair and spin parameters to distinguish the rotating hairy black hole with superradiant instability from the stable one.

Perturbations of massless external fields in Horndeski hairy black hole

In this paper, we study the propagations of external fields in Horndeski theory, including the scalar field, electromagnetic field and Dirac field. We extensively explore the quasinormal frequencies, time evolution, greybody factors and emission rates of those massless perturbing fields by solving the corresponding master equations in the Horndeski hairy black hole. With the use of both numerical and analytical methods, we disclose the competitive/promotional influences of the Horndeski hair, spin and quantum momentum number of the external fields on those phenomenal physics. Our results show that the Horndeski hairy black hole is stable under those perturbations. Moreover, a larger Horndeski hair could enhance the intensity of energy emission rate for Hawking radiation of various particles, indicating that comparing to the Schwarzschild black hole, the Horndeski hariy black hole could have longer or shorter lifetime depending on the sign of the Horndeski hair.

Images from disk and spherical accretions of hairy Schwarzschild black holes

A hairy Schwarzschild black hole describes the deformation of Schwarzschild black hole due to including additional sources. It is found that depending on the hairy parameters, the photons' configurations around this black hole can be classified into two cases, corresponding to the hairy Schwarzschild black hole with single photon sphere and double photon spheres, respectively. We focus on the shadows and images of the hairy Schwarzschild black hole under two types of static thin illuminations conditions: disk accretion and spherical accretion, respectively. Under both illuminations, the two hairy parameters ($α$ and $l_o$) have competitive effects on the shadow and optical appearance image of the hairy Schwarzschild black hole with single photon sphere. This means that even though the parameters have significant influences on the rings and shadows, its images with certain groups of $α$ and $l_o$ could be indistinguishable to that of Schwarzschild black hole, namely, the degeneracies of images raise between the hairy Schwarzschild black hole and Schwarzschild black hole. Moreover, the optical appearance image of the hairy Schwarzschild black hole with double photon spheres will exhibit new additional rings and accretion features, which {are not} present in the images of (hairy) Schwarzschild black hole with single photon sphere. Our theoretical studies on the rings and shadows provide a potential tool to differentiate the hairy Schwarzschild black hole with double photon spheres from Schwarzschild black hole, but they are not always helpful for the cases with single photon sphere due to the degeneracies.
