Design and preliminary performance study of the broad-band spectrometer detector for POLAR-2

POLAR-2, the successor of the POLAR experiment aboard China's Tiangong-2 space lab, is set to be deployed on the China Space Station. The POLAR-2 mission aims to conducting high-precision polarization measurements of high-energy transients with a primary focus on Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), following POLAR's pioneering accurate polarization measurements of GRB prompt emission. One of the key advancements in POLAR-2 is the inclusion of a dedicated Broad-band Spectrometer Detector (BSD) instrument, designed to provide precise measurements of GRB location and spectral parameters, which are critical inputs for accurate polarization analysis of POLAR-2's dedicated High-energy Polarimetry Detector (HPD), which is made of plastic scintillator bars array. BSD employs a coded-aperture mask imaging technique and pixelated GAGG scintillation crystals, offering a wide half-coded field of view of ~132° x 125° and an operational energy range of 10-1000 keV. Simulation results indicate that the instrument can achieve a localization accuracy of approximately 1.5° for faint GRBs similar to GRB 170817A, satisfying the core requirements of GRB polarimetry with HPD. BSD also has moderate capability for GRB polarimetry, particularly at several hundred keV energy. This paper outlines the preliminary design of BSD and presents an overall evaluation of its expected scientific performance, based on extensive Monte Carlo simulations and preliminary ground-based calibration tests.

Emergent topological re-entrant phase transition in a generalized quasiperiodic modulated Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

We study the topological properties of the one-dimensional generalized quasiperiodic modulated Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. The results reveal that topological re-entrant phase transition emerges. Through the analysis of a real-space winding number , we divide the emergent topological re-entrant phase transitions into two types. The first is the re-entrant phase transition from the traditional topological insulator phase into the topological Anderson insulator phase, and the second is the re-entrant phenomenon from one topological Anderson insulator phase into another topological Anderson insulator phase. These two types of re-entrant phase transition correspond to bounded and unbounded cases of quasiperiodic modulation, respectively. Furthermore, we verify the above topological re-entrant phase transitions by analyzing the Lyapunov exponent and bulk gap. Since Su-Schrieffer-Heeger models have been realized in various artificial systems (such as cold atoms, optical waveguide arrays, ion traps, Rydberg atom arrays, etc.), the two types of topological re-entrant phase transition predicted in this paper are expected to be realized in the near future.

From singular to regular: revisiting thermodynamics of Bardeen-AdS black holes

We explore the thermodynamic properties of the regular Bardeen-AdS black hole obtained by imposing an additional constraint on a singular "mother" black hole. This constraint eliminates the physical singularity but leads to the breakdown of the standard first law of black hole thermodynamics. The singular black hole exhibits a reentrant phase transition similar to that of the higher-dimensional Kerr-AdS black hole. The Bardeen-AdS black hole exhibits $P-V$ criticalities similar to that of the RN-AdS black hole, however has striking differences in its Gibbs free energy behavior. In particular, the characteristic "swallow-tail" structure associated with first-order phase transitions disappears. Instead, an "8-shaped" or "c-shaped" structure occurs, signifying a first-order phase transition or a zeroth-order phase transition between the small black hole and the large black hole phases, respectively. Our analysis suggests that constraint-induced modifications in the thermodynamic phase space may have deep consequences for the critical behaviors of black holes.

Topological Braiding of Bloch Eigenmodes Protected by Non-Abelian Quaternion Invariants

Braiding has attracted significant attention in physics because of its important role in describing the fundamental exchange of particles. Infusing the braiding with topological protection will make it robust against imperfections and perturbations, but such topological braiding is believed to be possible only in interacting quantum systems, e.g., topological superconductors. Here, we propose and demonstrate a new strategy of topological braiding that emerges from non-Abelian topological insulators, a class of recently discovered multi-band topological phase. We unveil a mathematical connection between braiding and non-Abelian quaternion invariants, by which Bloch eigenmodes under parallel transport produce braid sequences protected by the non-Abelian band topology. The braiding is also associated with geometric phases quantized over half the Brillouin zone. This new type of non-Abelian topological braiding is experimentally realized in acoustic systems with periodic synthetic dimensions. The results show that the principle discovered here is a new strategy towards topological braiding and can be extended for other types of classical waves and non-interacting quantum systems.

Dimensional crossover of thermal conductance in graphene nanoribbons: A first-principles approach

First-principles density-functional calculations are performed to investigate the thermal transport properties in graphene nanoribbons (GNRs). The dimensional crossover of thermal conductance from one to two dimensions (2D) is clearly demonstrated with increasing ribbon width. The thermal conductance of GNRs in a few nanometer width already exhibits an approximate low-temperature dependence of $T^{1.5}$, like that of 2D graphene sheet which is attributed to the quadratic nature of dispersion relation for the out-of-plane acoustic phonon modes. Using a zone-folding method, we heuristically derive the dimensional crossover of thermal conductance with the increase of ribbon width. Combining our calculations with the experimental phonon mean-free path, some typical values of thermal conductivity at room temperature are estimated for GNRs and for 2D graphene sheet, respectively. Our findings clarify the issue of low-temperature dependence of thermal transport in GNRs and suggest a calibration range of thermal conductivity for experimental measurements in graphene-based materials.

Complete Gluonic Phase in Two-Flavor Color Superconductivity

We study a typical complete gluonic phase (LGP) in two-flavor color superconductivity (2SC) by calculating the essential cubic and quartic interfering term between the gluonic condensates $ $ and $ $ with a gauged NJL model. It is proven that the coefficient of the cubic interfering term and the vacuum contributions of the cubic and quartic interfering term are all equal to zeroes. The coefficients of the quartic interfering term and the $ $'s quartic self-interaction term at stationary points of LOFF phase are calculated. Comparisons among the effective potentials of LGP, g2SC and LOFF phase indicate that LGP could be the genuine ground state of 2SC for some reasonable parameters.

Electrical Neutrality and Symmetry Restoring Phase Transitions at High Density in a Two-Flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio Model

A general research on chiral symmetry restoring phase transitions at zero temperature and finite chemical potentials under electrical neutrality condition has been conducted in a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model to describe two-flavor normal quark matter. Depending on that $m_0/Λ$, the ratio of dynamical quark mass in vacuum and the 3D momentum cutoff in the loop integrals, is less or greater than 0.413, the phase transition will be second or first order. A complete phase diagram of $u$ quark chemical potential versus $m_0$ is given. With the electrical neutrality constraint, the region where second order phase transition happens will be wider than the one without electrical neutrality limitation. The results also show that, for the value of $m_0/Λ$ from QCD phenomenology, the phase transition must be first order.
