Topology preserving Image segmentation using the iterative convolution-thresholding method

Variational models are widely used in image segmentation, with various models designed to address different types of images by optimizing specific objective functionals. However, traditional segmentation models primarily focus on the visual attributes of the image, often neglecting the topological properties of the target objects. This limitation can lead to segmentation results that deviate from the ground truth, particularly in images with complex topological structures. In this paper, we introduce a topology-preserving constraint into the iterative convolution-thresholding method (ICTM), resulting in the topology-preserving ICTM (TP-ICTM). Extensive experiments demonstrate that, by explicitly preserving the topological properties of target objects-such as connectivity-the proposed algorithm achieves enhanced accuracy and robustness, particularly in images with intricate structures or noise.

Enhanced second-order Gauss-Seidel projection methods for the Landau-Lifshitz equation

The dynamics of magnetization in ferromagnetic materials are modeled by the Landau-Lifshitz equation, which presents significant challenges due to its inherent nonlinearity and non-convex constraint. These complexities necessitate efficient numerical methods for micromagnetics simulations. The Gauss-Seidel Projection Method (GSPM), first introduced in 2001, is among the most efficient techniques currently available. However, existing GSPMs are limited to first-order accuracy. This paper introduces two novel second-order accurate GSPMs based on a combination of the biharmonic equation and the second-order backward differentiation formula, achieving computational complexity comparable to that of solving the scalar biharmonic equation implicitly. The first proposed method achieves unconditional stability through Gauss-Seidel updates, while the second method exhibits conditional stability with a Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy constant of 0.25. Through consistency analysis and numerical experiments, we demonstrate the efficacy and reliability of these methods. Notably, the first method displays unconditional stability in micromagnetics simulations, even when the stray field is updated only once per time step.

Particle Conversions Beyond the WKB Approximation and Solar-Induced Gravitational Waves from Dark Photon Dark Matter

We investigate the conversion of kinetic mixing dark photon dark matter into gravitational waves within the magnetic field of the Sun. Our study reveals that the WKB approximation is invalid in this scenario. We derive an analytic solution for the conversion probability with unitary evolution feature. This solution aligns in form with previous studies on photon-gravitational wave conversion. Interestingly, it is applicable in situations where the WKB approximation fails. We extend the unitary evolution solution to other conversion processes, such as axion-photon and dark photon-photon conversions. When the WKB approximation conditions are met, this solution reduces to the WKB result. We compute the characteristic strain of gravitational waves resulting from dark photon conversion in the solar magnetic field, spanning frequencies from $10^{-5}$ Hz to $10^6$ Hz. Our findings indicate that the characteristic strain derived from the unitary evolution solution differs significantly from that of the WKB solution. The resulting strain signal is far below the sensitivity of current gravitational wave interferometers. Nevertheless, we have proposed an exotic gravitational wave source, which could be useful in non-minimal dark sector models.

Muon g-2, Long-Range Muon Spin Force, and Neutrino Oscillations

Recent studies have proposed using a geocentric muon spin force to account for the $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly, with the long-range force mediator being a light axion-like particle. The mediator exhibits a CP-violating scalar coupling to nucleons and a normal derivative coupling to muons. Due to the weak symmetry, this axion inevitably couples to neutrinos, providing potential impact on neutrino oscillations. By utilizing neutrino data from BOREXINO, IceCube DeepCore, Super-Kamiokande, and SNO, we have identified that both atmospheric and solar neutrino data can impose stringent constraints on the long-range muon spin force model and the $(g-2)_μ$ parameter space. With optimized data analysis techniques and the potential from future experiments, such as JUNO, Hyper-Kamiokande, SNO+, and IceCube PINGU, there exists a promising opportunity to achieve even greater sensitivities. Indeed, neutrino oscillations offer a robust and distinctive cross-check for the model, offering stringent constraints on the $(g-2)_μ$ parameter space.

Long-lived Searches of Vector-like Lepton and Its Accompanying Scalar at Colliders

Recently, the vector-like leptons (VLLs) as a simple extension to the standard model (SM) have attracted widespread attention both in theory and experiments. The present collider searches mainly focus on the studies of their prompt decays, which prefer a relatively large coupling. In this paper, we concentrate on searches for long-lived signatures of the singlet VLLs $F$ or their accompanying scalar particles $ϕ$ both in the hadronic and electronic colliders. The long-lived signatures are naturally induced from small chiral mass mixing between VLLs and SM leptons. Two specific models distinguished by whether the VLLs couple to scalar particles are introduced to realize the aforementioned features. For long-lived VLLs case, we find that with the kink track method the sensitivities at future HL-LHC with $\sqrt{s}=14~\text{TeV}$ can reach the regions for VLL mass $m_F \in [200,1100]~\text{GeV}$ and the mass mixing parameter $θ_L \in [10^{-10},3\times 10^{-8}]$. For the long-lived accompanying scalar particle case, by fixing VLLs or scalar mass, or the mass ratio between VLL and the accompanying scalar, we explore the projected sensitivities through the time delay and displaced vertex strategies, which can probe the regions for $m_F \in [200,1200]~\text{GeV}$ and coupling $yθ_L\in [10^{-11},10^{-6}]$. Furthermore, we also explore the long-lived accompanying scalars at the future CEPC provided that the VLLs can couple to the SM first-generation leptons. We find that CEPC has good performances for $m_ϕ< 120~\text{GeV}$ and $m_F<1200~\text{GeV}$. These long-lived searches are complementary to previous studies, which opens the door towards the smaller coupling regions.

Constraining Ultralight Dark Matter through an Accelerated Resonant Search

Experiments aimed at detecting ultralight dark matter typically rely on resonant effects, which are sensitive to the dark matter mass that matches the resonance frequency. In this study, we investigate the nucleon couplings of ultralight axion dark matter using a magnetometer operating in a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) mode. Our approach involves the use of a $^{21}$Ne spin-based sensor, which features the lowest nuclear magnetic moment among noble-gas spins. This configuration allows us to achieve an ultrahigh sensitivity of 0.73 fT/Hz$^{1/2}$ at around 5 Hz, corresponding to energy resolution of approximately 1.5$\times 10^{-23}\,\rm{eV/Hz^{1/2}}$. Our analysis reveals that under certain conditions it is beneficial to scan the frequency with steps significantly larger than the resonance width. The analytical results are in agreement with experimental data and the scan strategy is potentially applicable to other resonant searches. Further, our study establishes stringent constraints on axion-like particles (ALP) in the 4.5--15.5 Hz Compton-frequency range coupling to neutrons and protons, improving on prior work by several-fold. Within a band around 4.6--6.6 Hz and around 7.5 Hz, our laboratory findings surpass astrophysical limits derived from neutron-star cooling. Hence, we demonstrate an accelerated resonance search for ultralight dark matter, achieving an approximately 30-fold increase in scanning step while maintaining competitive sensitivity.

Enhanced Monochromatic Photon Emission from Millicharged Co-Interacting Dark Matter

We study a millicharged co-interacting dark matter scenario, where the primary dark matter constituent is the dark photon $A'$ and the secondary component is the fermion $χ$. In this model, $χ$ interacts with $A'$ via a $U(1)'$ interaction while being millicharged with respect to normal photons. Our investigation focuses on the oscillation of $A'$ dark matter into photons within the background of $χ$ particles, revealing that the $A'-χ$ scattering rate benefits from a Bose enhancement of the $A'$ final state. As the oscillation production rate is directly linked to the scattering rate, the conversion of $A'$ dark matter into monochromatic photons experiences significant amplification owing to this Bose enhancement, especially when the scattering rate $Γ_{\rm sca}$ approaches the dark photon mass $m_{A'}$. These converted monochromatic photons are detectable through radio telescopes and can induce distortions in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) spectrum. We find that the sensitivity of radio telescopes and the constraints imposed by CMB distortion on the kinetic mixing parameter are notably heightened compared to scenarios without the subdominant millicharged dark matter.

Amplifying Non-Resonant Production of Dark Sector Particles in Scattering Dominance Regime

We investigate the enhancement of dark sector particle production within the scattering dominant regime. These particles typically exhibit a slight mixing with Standard Model particles through various portals, allowing for their generation through in-medium oscillation from Standard Model particle sources. Our analysis reveals that in the scattering dominance regime, with a significantly smaller scattering mean free path $λ_{\rm sca}$ compared to the absorption mean free path $λ_{\rm abs}$, the nonresonant production of sterile states can experience an enhancement by a factor of $λ_{\rm abs}/λ_{\rm sca}$. This phenomenon is demonstrated within the context of kinetic mixing dark photon production at a reactor, precisely satisfying this condition. By incorporating this collisional enhancement, we find that the current sensitivity to the mixing parameter $ε$ for dark photons in the TEXONO experiment can be significantly improved across a range spanning from tens of eV to MeV. This advancement establishes the most stringent laboratory constraint within this mass spectrum for the dark photon. Sterile neutrino production, however, does not exhibit such enhancement, either due to the failure to meet the scattering dominance criterion or the neutrino damping in resonant production.

A prediction-correction based iterative convolution-thresholding method for topology optimization of heat transfer problems

In this paper, we propose an iterative convolution-thresholding method (ICTM) based on prediction-correction for solving the topology optimization problem in steady-state heat transfer equations. The problem is formulated as a constrained minimization problem of the complementary energy, incorporating a perimeter/surface-area regularization term, while satisfying a steady-state heat transfer equation. The decision variables of the optimization problem represent the domains of different materials and are represented by indicator functions. The perimeter/surface-area term of the domain is approximated using Gaussian kernel convolution with indicator functions. In each iteration, the indicator function is updated using a prediction-correction approach. The prediction step is based on the variation of the objective functional by imposing the constraints, while the correction step ensures the monotonically decreasing behavior of the objective functional. Numerical results demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of our proposed method, particularly when compared to classical approaches based on the ICTM.

Exploring Ultralight Scalar Assistance in Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter: Cold Spectrum and Unusual X/Gamma-ray Signatures

We present a scalar-driven sterile neutrino production model where the interaction with the ultralight scalar field modifies the oscillation production of sterile neutrinos in the early universe. The model effectively suppresses the production of sterile neutrinos at low temperatures due to the heavy scalar mass, resulting in a colder matter power spectrum that avoids constraints from small-scale structure observations. In this model, the dominant dark matter relic is from sterile neutrinos, with only a small fraction originating from the ultralight scalar. Furthermore, the model predicts a detectable X/gamma-ray flux proportional to the cubic density of local sterile neutrinos for a light scalar mass due to the light scalar coupling to sterile neutrinos. This distinguishes our model from normal decaying dark matter, which has a linear dependence on the density. In addition, the model predicts a potential low-energy monochromatic neutrino signal that can be detectable by future neutrino telescopes.

Unveiling Time-Varying Signals of Ultralight Bosonic Dark Matter at Collider and Beam Dump Experiments

The ultralight boson represents a promising dark matter candidate exhibiting unique wave-like behaviors. These properties could transfer to the dark mediator, such as the kinetic mixing dark photon, which can be a link between the dark and Standard Model sectors, resulting in periodic oscillations of its mass. We propose a method to detect ultralight dark matter using dark mediators in collider and beam dump experiments, distinguishing it from conventional atomic, molecular, and optical methods. The time-varying nature of dark mediator mass exhibits a double-peak spectrum, reducing traditional constraints by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude, due to decreased luminosity exposure in each resonant mass bin. To enhance sensitivity, we utilize event time-stamps in the CMS Open Data and demonstrate that this technique boosts sensitivity by approximately one order of magnitude compared to the time-blind method. Moreover, it proves effective in detecting the invisible decay of the dark mediator.

The ALP explanation to muon $(g-2)$ and its test at future Tera-$Z$ and Higgs factories

Models with an Axion Like Particle (ALP) can provide an explanation for the discrepancy between experimental measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment $(g-2)_μ$ and the Standard Model prediction. This explanation relies on the couplings of the ALP to the muon and the photon. We also include more general couplings to the electroweak gauge bosons and incorporate them in the calculations up to the 2-loop order. We investigate the existing experimental constraints and find that they do not rule out the ALP model under consideration as a possible explanation for the $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly. At the same time, we find the future Tera-$Z$ and Higgs factories, such as the CEPC and FCC-ee, can completely cover the relevant parameter space through searches with final states $(γγ) γ$, $(μ^+ μ^-) γ$ and $(μ^+ μ^-) μ^+ μ^-$.

Heavy long-lived coannihilation partner from inelastic Dark Matter model and its signatures at the LHC

The coannihilation mechanism is a well-motivated alternative to the simple thermal freeze-out mechanism, where the dark matter relic density can be obtained through the coannihilation with a partner particle of similar mass with dark matter. When the partner particle is neutral, the inelastic nature of dark matter can help it to escape the direct detection limits. In this work, we focus on the coannihilation scenario in which the annihilation cross section is dominated by the partner-partner pair annihilation. We pay special interest on the parameter space where the coannihilation partner is long-lived, which leads to displaced signatures at the collider. In such case, it opens the heavy mass parameter space for the coannihilation dark matter, comparing with those dominated by the partner-dark matter annihilation. Specifically, we propose an inelastic scalar dark matter model with a broken symmetry, which realizes the domination of partner-partner pair annihilation. Then, we study two different realizations of the coannihilation partner decay and the existing constraints from the relic abundance, direct and indirect dark matter detection and the collider searches. We focus on the channel that the long-lived coannihilation partner decays to dark matter plus leptons. The high-luminosity LHC can reach good sensitivities for such heavy dark matter and coannihilation partner around 100--700 GeV.

Scalar-mediated dark matter model at colliders and gravitational wave detectors -- A White paper for Snowmass 2021

The weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) have been the most popular particle dark matter (DM) candidate for the last several decades, and it is well known that WIMP can be probed via the direct, indirect and collider experiments. However, the direct and indirect signals are highly suppressed in some scalar-mediated DM models, e.g. the lepton portal model with a Majorana DM candidate. As a result, collider searches are considered as the only hope to probe such models. In this white paper, we propose that the gravitational wave (GW) astronomy also serves as a powerful tool to probe such scalar mediated WIMP models via the potential first-order phase transition GW signals. An example for the lepton portal dark matter is provided, showing the complementarity between collider and GW probes.

A $ν$ scalar in the early universe and $(g-2)_μ$

We investigate a concrete scenario of a light scalar with a mass around 1 MeV which can be connected to the origin of neutrino masses and simultaneously survive current bounds on relativistic degrees of freedom in the early universe. In particular we show that a feeble coupling to the Standard Model neutrinos can relax the stringent bounds on the decays to photons inferred from the measured value of $N_{\rm eff}$. Interestingly, we find that such a scalar whose diphoton coupling is generated by a tree-level coupling to the muon of similar strength as that of the Standard Model Higgs boson can simultaneously explain the long-standing discrepancy in the measured value of the muon magnetic moment. We present a possible ultraviolet completion of this scenario providing a link between new physics in the early universe and the generation of neutrino masses.

Dark matter transient annihilations in the early Universe

The cosmological evolution can modify the dark matter (DM) properties in the early Universe to be vastly different from the properties today. Therefore, the relation between the relic abundance and the DM constraints today needs to be revisited. We propose novel \textit{transient} annihilations of DM which helps to alleviate the pressure from DM null detection results. As a concrete example, we consider the vector portal DM and focus on the mass evolution of the dark photon. When the Universe cools down, the gauge boson mass can increase monotonically and go across several important thresholds; opening new transient annihilation channels in the early Universe. Those channels are either forbidden or weakened at the late Universe which helps to evade the indirect searches. In particular, the transient resonant channel can survive direct detection (DD) without tuning the DM to be half of the dark photon mass and can be soon tested by future DD or collider experiments. A feature of the scenario is the existence of a light dark scalar.

Higgs alignment and novel $CP$-Violating observables in two-Higgs-doublet models

Null results from searches for new physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) tend to enforce the belief that new particles must be much heavier than the weak scale. We undertake a systematic study of the interplay between Higgs alignment and $CP$-violation in complex two-Higgs-doublet models, which enables us to construct a $CP$-violating scenario where new Higgs bosons are close to the weak scale after including stringent constraints from the electric dipole moment and measurements at the LHC. In addition, we propose a novel potential signal of $CP$-violation in the Higgs-to-Higgs decays, $h_3\to h_2 h_1$, where $h_3, h_2$, and $h_1$ are the heaviest, second heaviest and the Standard Model-like neutral Higgs bosons, respectively. The decay could manifest itself in triple boson final states in $h_1h_1h_1$ and $h_1h_1Z$, which are quite distinct and provide unique venues for new measurements at the LHC.

Searching for lepton portal dark matter with colliders and gravitational waves

We study the lepton portal dark matter (DM) model in which the relic abundance is determined by the portal coupling among the Majorana fermion DM candidate $χ$, the singlet charged scalar mediator $S^\pm$ and the Standard Model (SM) right-handed lepton. The direct and indirect searches are not sensitive to this model. This article studies the lepton portal coupling as well as the scalar portal coupling (between $S^\pm$ and SM Higgs boson), as the latter is generally allowed in the Lagrangian. The inclusion of scalar portal coupling not only significantly enhances the LHC reach via the $gg\to h^*\to S^+S^-$ process, but also provides a few novel signal channels, such as the exotic decays and coupling deviations of the Higgs boson, offering new opportunities to probe the model. In addition, we also study the Drell-Yan production of $S^+S^-$ at future lepton colliders, and find out that the scenario where one $S^\pm$ is off-shell can be used to measure the lepton portal coupling directly. In particular, we are interested in the possibility that the scalar potential triggers a first-order phase transition and hence provides the stochastic gravitational wave (GW) signals. In this case, the terrestrial collider experiments and space-based GW detectors serve as complementary approaches to probe the model.
