Charge-Spin Interconversion in Epitaxial Pt Probed by Spin-Orbit Torques in a Magnetic Insulator

We measure spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in a unique model system of all-epitaxial ferrite/Pt bilayers to gain insights into charge-spin interconversion in Pt. With negligible electronic conduction in the insulating ferrite, the crystalline Pt film acts as the sole source of charge-to-spin conversion. A small field-like SOT independent of Pt thickness suggests a weak Rashba-Edelstein effect at the ferrite/Pt interface. By contrast, we observe a sizable damping-like SOT that depends on the Pt thickness, from which we deduce the dominance of an extrinsic spin-Hall effect (skew scattering) and Dyakonov-Perel spin relaxation in the crystalline Pt film. Furthermore, our results point to a large internal spin-Hall ratio of $\approx$0.8 in epitaxial Pt. Our experimental work takes an essential step towards understanding the mechanisms of charge-spin interconversion and SOTs in Pt-based heterostructures, which are crucial for power-efficient spintronic devices.

Enhanced thermal Hall effect in nearly ferroelectric insulators

In the context of recent experimental observations of an unexpectedly large thermal Hall conductivity, $κ_H$, in insulating $\mathrm{La_2CuO_4}$ (LCO) and $\mathrm{SrTiO_3}$ (STO), we theoretically explore conditions under which acoustic phonons can give rise to such a large $κ_H$. Both the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to $κ_H$ are large in proportion to the dielectric constant, $ε$, and the flexoelectric coupling, $F$. While the intrinsic contribution is still orders of magnitude smaller than the observed effect, an extrinsic contribution proportional to the phonon mean free path appears likely to account for the observations, at least in STO. We predict a larger intrinsic $κ_H$ in certain insulating perovskites.

$\mathcal{PT}$-Symmetric Topological Edge-Gain Effect

We demonstrate a non-Hermitian topological effect that is characterized by having complex eigenvalues only in the edge states of a topological material, despite the fact that the material is completely uniform. Such an effect can be constructed in any topological structure formed by two gapped sub-systems, e.g., a quantum spin-Hall system, with a suitable non-Hermitian coupling between the spins. The resulting complex-eigenvalued edge state is robust against defects due to the topological protection. In photonics, such an effect can be used for the implementation of topological lasers, in which a uniform pumping provides gain only in the edge lasing state. Furthermore, such a topological lasing model is reciprocal and is thus compatible with standard photonic platforms.

Three-dimensional Chiral Lattice Fermion in Floquet Systems

We show that the Nielsen-Ninomiya no-go theorem still holds on Floquet lattice: there is an equal number of right-handed and left-handed Weyl points in 3D Floquet lattice. However, in the adiabatic limit, where the time evolution of low-energy subspace is decoupled from the high-energy subspace, we show that the bulk dynamics in the low-energy subspace can be described by Floquet bands with purely left/right-handed Weyl points, despite the no-go theorem. For the adiabatic evolution of two bands, we show that the difference of the number of right-handed and left-handed Weyl points equals twice the winding number of the Floquet operator of the low-energy subspace over the Brillouin zone, thus guaranteeing the number of Weyl points to be even. Based on this observation, we propose to realize purely left/right-handed Weyl points in the adiabatic limit using a Hamiltonian obtained through dimensional reduction of four-dimensional quantum Hall system. We address the breakdown of the adiabatic limit on the surface due to the presence of gapless boundary states. This effect induces a circular motion of a wave packet in an applied magnetic field, travelling alternatively in the low-energy and high-energy subspace of the system.

Alice string in Non-Hermitian Systems

Alice string is a topological defect with a very peculiar feature. When a defect with a monopole charge encircles an Alice string, the monopole charge changes sign. In this work, we generalize this notion to momentum space of periodic media with loss and gain. In particular, we find that the generic band-structure node for a three-dimensional non-Hermitian crystalline system acts as an Alice string, which can flip the Chern number charge carried by Weyl points and by exceptional-line rings. We discuss signatures of this topological structure for a lattice model with one tuning parameter, including non-trivial braiding of bulk band nodes, and the spectroscopic features of both the bulk and the surface states. We also explore how an Alice string affects the validity of the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem, and present a mathematical description of the braiding phenomenon.

Topological Classification of Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians

We revisit the problem of classifying topological band structures in non-Hermitian systems. Recently, a solution has been proposed, which is based on redefining the notion of energy band gap in two different ways, leading to the so-called "point-gap" and "line-gap" schemes. However, simple Hamiltonians without band degeneracies can be constructed which correspond to neither of the two schemes. Here, we resolve this shortcoming of the existing classifications by developing the most general topological characterization of non-Hermitian bands for systems without a symmetry. Our approach, which is based on homotopy theory, makes no particular assumptions on the band gap, and predicts several amendments to the previous classification frameworks. In particular, we show that the 1D invariant is the noncommutative braid group (rather than $\mathbb{Z}$ winding number), and that depending on the braid group invariants, the 2D invariants can be cyclic groups $\mathbb{Z}_n$ (rather than $\mathbb{Z}$ Chern number). We interpret these novel results in terms of a correspondence with gapless systems, and we illustrate them in terms of analogies with other problems in band topology, namely the fragile topological invariants in Hermitian systems and the topological defects and textures of nematic liquids.

Topological Quantum Computation Based on Chiral Majorana Fermions

Chiral Majorana fermion is a massless self-conjugate fermion which can arise as the edge state of certain two-dimensonal topological matters. It has been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed in a hybrid device of quantum anomalous Hall insulator and a conventional superconductor. Its closely related cousin, Majorana zero mode in the bulk of the corresponding topological matter, is known to be applicable in topological quantum computations. Here we show that the propagation of chiral Majorana fermions lead to the same unitary transformation as that in the braiding of Majorana zero modes, and propose a new platform to perform quantum computation with chiral Majorana fermions. A Corbino ring junction of the hybrid device can utilize quantum coherent chiral Majorana fermions to implement the Hadamard gate and the phase gate, and the junction conductance yields a natural readout for the qubit state.

Conversion rules for Weyl points and nodal lines in topological media

According to a widely-held paradigm, a pair of Weyl points with opposite chirality mutually annihilate when brought together. In contrast, we show that such a process is strictly forbidden for Weyl points related by a mirror symmetry, provided that an effective two-band description exists in terms of orbitals with opposite mirror eigenvalue. Instead, such a pair of Weyl points convert into a nodal loop inside a symmetric plane upon the collision. Similar constraints are identified for systems with multiple mirrors, facilitating previously unreported nodal-line and nodal-chain semimetals that exhibit both Fermi-arc and drumhead surface states. We further find that Weyl points in systems symmetric under a $π$-rotation composed with time-reversal are characterized by an additional integer charge that we call helicity. A pair of Weyl points with opposite chirality can annihilate only if their helicities also cancel out. We base our predictions on topological crystalline invariants derived from relative homotopy theory, and we test our predictions on simple tight-binding models. The outlined homotopy description can be directly generalized to systems with multiple bands and other choices of symmetry.

Phases of a phenomenological model of twisted bilayer graphene

We propose a lattice scale two-band generalized Hubbard model as a caricature of the electronic structure of twisted bilayer graphene. Various possible broken symmetry phases can arise, including a nematic phase (which is a form of orbital ferromagnet) and an orbital-triplet spin-singlet superconducting phase. Concerning the mechanism of superconductivity -- we propose an analogy with superconductivity in alkali-doped C$_{60}$ in which a violation of Hund's first rule plays a central role.

Constructing three-dimensional photonic topological insulator using two-dimensional ring resonator lattice with a synthetic frequency dimension

In the development of topological photonics, achieving three dimensional topological insulators is of significant interest since it enables the exploration of new topological physics with photons, and promises novel photonic devices that are robust against disorders in three dimensions. Previous theoretical proposals towards three dimensional topological insulators utilize complex geometries that are challenging to implement. Here, based on the concept of synthetic dimension, we show that a two-dimensional array of ring resonators, which was previously demonstrated to exhibit a two-dimensional topological insulator phase, in fact automatically becomes a three-dimensional topological insulator, when the frequency dimension is taken into account. Moreover, by modulating a few of the resonators, a screw dislocation along the frequency axis can be created, which provides robust transport of photons along the frequency axis. Demonstrating the physics of screw dislocation in a topological system has been a significant challenge in solid state systems. Our work indicates that the physics of three-dimensional topological insulator can be explored in standard integrated photonics platforms, leading to opportunities for novel devices that control the frequency of light.

Quantum phase transition of chiral Majorana fermion in the presence of disorder

We study the quantum phase transitions of a disordered two-dimensional quantum anomalous Hall insulator with $s$-wave superconducting proximity, which are governed by the percolation theory of chiral Majorana fermions. Based on symmetry arguments and a renormalization group analysis, we show there are generically two phase transitions from Bogoliubov-de Gennes Chern number $\mathcal{N}=0$ to $\mathcal{N}=1$ ($p+ip$ chiral topological superconductor) and then to $\mathcal{N}=2$, in agreement with the conclusion from the band theory without disorders. Further, we discuss the critical scaling behavior of the $e^2/2h$ conductance half plateau induced by $\mathcal{N}=1$ chiral topological superconductor recently observed in the experiment. In particular, we compare the critical behavior of the half plateau induced by topological superconductor with that predicted recently by alternative explanations of the half plateau, and show that they can be distinguished in experiments.

Double helix nodal line superconductor

Time-reversal invariant superconductors in three dimensions may contain nodal lines in the Brillouin zone, which behave exactly as Wilson loops of 3d momentum-space Chern-Simons theory of the Berry connection. Here we study the conditions of realizing linked nodal lines (Wilson loops), which yield a topological contribution to the thermal magnetoelectric coefficient that is given by the Chern-Simons action. We find the essential conditions are the existence of torus or higher genus fermi surfaces and spiral spin textures. We construct such a model with two torus fermi surfaces, where a generic spin-dependent interaction leads to double-helix-like linked nodal lines as the superconductivity is developed.

Spatial dependent spontaneous emission of an atom in a semi-infinite waveguide of rectangular cross section

We study a quantum electrodynamics (QED) system made of an two-level atom and a semi-infinite rectangular waveguide, which behaves as a perfect mirror in one end. The spatial dependence of the atomic spontaneous emission has been included in the coupling strength relevant to the eigenmodes of the waveguide. The role of retardation is studied for the atomic transition frequency far away from the cutoff frequencies. The atom-mirror distance introduces different phases and retardation times into the dynamics of the atom interacting resonantly with the corresponding transverse modes. It is found that the upper state population decreases from its initial as long as the atom-mirror distance does not vanish, and is lowered and lowered when more and more transverse modes are resonant with the atom. The atomic spontaneous emission can be either suppressed or enhanced by adjusting the atomic location for short retardation time. There are partial revivals and collapses due to the photon reabsorbed and re-emitted by the atom for long retardation time.

Helical Spin Order from Topological Dirac and Weyl Semimetals

We study dynamical mass generation and the resultant helical spin orders in topological Dirac and Weyl semimetals, including the edge states of quantum spin Hall insulators, the surface states of weak topological insulators, and the bulk materials of Weyl semimetals. In particular, the helical spin textures of Weyl semimetals manifest the spin-momentum locking of Weyl fermions in a visible manner. The spin-wave fluctuations of the helical order carry electric charge density; therefore, the spin textures can be electrically controlled in a simple and predictable manner.

Superfluidity of Bosons in Kagome Lattices with Frustration

In this letter we consider spinless bosons in a Kagome lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping and on-site interaction, and the sign of hopping is inverted by insetting a π flux in each triangle of Kagome lattice so that the lowest single particle band is perfectly flat. We show that in the high density limit, despite of the infinite degeneracy of the single particle ground states, interaction will select out the Bloch state at the K point of Brillouin zone for boson condensation at the lowest temperature. As temperature increases, the single boson superfluid order can be easily destroyed, while an exotic triple-boson paired superfluid order will remain. We establish that this trion superfluid exists in a broad temperature regime until the temperature is increased to the same order of hopping and then the system turns into normal phases. Finally we show that time of flight measurement of momentum distribution and its noise correlation can be used to distinguish these three phases.
