High-K isomer and the rotational properties in the odd-Z neutron-rich nucleus $^{163}$Eu

The newly observed isomer and ground-state band in the odd-Z neutron-rich rare-earth nucleus $^{163}$Eu are investigated by using the cranked shell model (CSM) with pairing treated by the particle-number conserving (PNC) method. This is the first time detailed theoretical investigations are performed of the observed $964(1)$ keV isomer and ground-state rotational band in $^{163}$Eu. The experimental data are reproduced very well by the theoretical results. The configuration of the $964(1)$ keV isomer is assigned as the three-particle state $\frac{13}{2}^{-}(ν\frac{7}{2}^{+}[633]\otimesν\frac{1}{2}^{-}[521]\otimesπ\frac{5}{2}^{+}[413]$). More low-lying multi-particle states are predicted in $^{163}$Eu. Due to its significant effect on the nuclear mean field, the high-order $\varepsilon_{6}$ deformation plays an important role in the energy and configuration assignment of the multi-particle states. Compared to its neighboring even-even nuclei $^{162}$Sm and $^{164}$Gd, there is a $10\%\sim15\%$ increase of $J^{(1)}$ of the one-particle ground-state band in $^{163}$Eu. This is explained by the pairing reduction due to the blocking of the nucleon on the proton $π\frac{5}{2}^{+}$[413] orbital in $^{163}$Eu.

Insight into nuclear midshell structures by study of $K$-isomers in rare-earth neutron-rich nuclei

Inspired by the newly discovered isomeric states in the rare-earth neutron-rich nuclei, high-$K$ isomeric states in neutron-rich samarium and gadolinium isotopes are investigated within the framework of the cranked shell model (CSM) with pairing correlation treated by a particle-number-conserving (PNC) method. The experimental multi-particle state energies and moments of inertia are reproduced quite well by the PNC-CSM calculations. A remarkable effect from the high-order deformation $\varepsilon_{6}$ is demonstrated. Based on the occupation probabilities, the configurations are assigned to the observed high-$K$ isomeric states. The lower $5^-$ isomeric state in $^{158}$Sm is preferred as the two-proton state with configuration $π\frac{5}{2}^{+}[413]\otimesπ\frac{5}{2}^{-}[532]$. More low-lying two-particle states are predicted. The systematics of the electronic quadrupole transition probabilities, $B(E2)$ values along the neodymium, samarium, gadolinium and dysprosium isotopes and $N=96,98,100,102$ isotones chains is investigated to reveal the midshell collectivities.

Backbendings of Superdeformed bands in $^{36,40}$Ar

Experimentally observed superdeformed (SD) rotational bands in $^{36}$Ar and $^{40}$Ar are studied by the cranked shell model (CSM) with the paring correlations treated by a particle-number-conserving (PNC) method. This is the first time the PNC-CSM calculations are performed on the light nuclear mass region around $A=40$. The experimental kinematic moments of inertia $J^{(1)}$ versus rotational frequency are reproduced well. The backbending of the SD band at frequency around $\hbarω=1.5$ MeV in $^{36}$Ar is attributed to the sharp rise of the simultaneous alignments of the neutron and proton $1d_{5/2}[202]5/2$ pairs and $1f_{7/2}[321]3/2$ pairs, which is the consequence of the band crossing between the $1d_{5/2}[202]5/2$ and $1f_{7/2}[321]3/2$ configuration states. The gentle upbending at the low frequency of the SD band in $^{40}$Ar is mainly effected by the alignments of the neutron $1f_{7/2}[321]3/2$ pairs and proton $1d_{5/2}[202]5/2$ pairs. The PNC-CSM calculations show that besides the diagonal parts, the off-diagonal parts of the alignments play an important role in the rotational behavior of the SD bands.

Rotational Properties of the Odd-$Z$ Transfermium Nucleus $^{255}$Lr by a Particle-number-conserving Method in the Cranked Shell Model

Experimentally observed ground state band based on the $1/2^{-}[521]$ Nilsson state and the first exited band based on the $7/2^{-}[514]$ Nilsson state in the odd-$Z$ nucleus $^{255}$Lr are studied by the cranked shell model (CSM) with the paring correlations treated by the particle-number-conserving (PNC) method. This is the first time the detailed theoretical investigations being performed on these rotational bands. Both the experimental kinematic and dynamic moment of inertia ($\mathcal{J}^{(1)}$ and $\mathcal{J}^{(2)}$) versus rotational frequency are reproduced quite well by the PNC-CSM calculations. By comparing the theoretical kinematic moment of inertia $\mathcal{J}^{(1)}$ with the experimental ones extracted from different spin assignments, the spin $17/2^{-}\rightarrow13/2^{-}$ is assigned to the lowest-lying $196.6(5)$ keV transition of the $1/2^{-}[521]$ band, and $15/2^{-}\rightarrow11/2^{-}$ to the $189(1)$ keV transition of the $7/2^{-}[514]$ band, respectively. The proton $N=7$ major shell is included in the calculations. The intruder of the high$-j$ low$-Ω$ orbitals $1j_{15/2}$ $ (1/2^{-}[770])$ at the high spin leads to the band-crossing at $\hbarω\approx0.20$ ($\hbarω\approx0.25$) MeV for the $7/2^{-}[514]$ $α=-1/2$ ($α=+1/2$) band, and at $\hbarω\approx0.175$ MeV for the $1/2^{-}[521]$ $α=-1/2$ band, respectively. Further investigations show that the band-crossing frequencies are quadrupole deformation dependent.

Shedding Light on the EOS-Gravity Degeneracy and Constraining the Nuclear Symmetry Energy from the Gravitational Binding Energy of Neutron Stars

A thorough understanding of properties of neutron stars requires both a reliable knowledge of the equation of state (EOS) of super-dense nuclear matter and the strong-field gravity theories simultaneously. To provide information that may help break this EOS-gravity degeneracy, we investigate effects of nuclear symmetry energy on the gravitational binding energy of neutron stars within GR and the scalar-tensor subset of alternative gravity models. We focus on effects of the slope $L$ of nuclear symmetry energy at saturation density and the high-density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy. We find that the variation of either the density slope $L$ or the high-density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy leads to large changes in the binding energy of neutron stars. The difference in predictions using the GR and the scalar-tensor theory appears only for massive neutron stars, and even then is significantly smaller than the difference resulting from variations in the symmetry energy.

Impact of the equation-of-state -- gravity degeneracy on constraining the nuclear symmetry energy from astrophysical observables

There is a degeneracy between the equation of state (EOS) of superdense neutron-rich nuclear matter and the strong-field gravity in understanding properties of neutron stars. While the EOS is still poorly known, there are also longstanding ambiguities in choosing General Relativity or alternative gravity theories in the not-so-well tested strong-field regime. Besides possible appearance of hyperons and new phases, the most uncertain part of the nucleonic EOS is currently the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy. To provide information that may help break the EOS-gravity degeneracy, we investigate effects of symmetry energy within its uncertain range determined by terrestrial nuclear laboratory experiments on the gravitational binding energy and spacetime curvature of neutron stars within GR and the scalar-tensor (ST) theory of gravity. In particular, we focus on effects of the following parameters characterizing the EOS of neutron-rich nucleonic matter: (1) the incompressibility $K_0$ of symmetric nuclear matter, (2) the slope $L$ of symmetry energy at saturation density and (3) the high-density behavior of symmetry energy. We find that the variation of either the density slope $L$ or the high-density behavior of symmetry energy leads to large changes in both the binding energy and curvature of neutron stars while effects of varying the more constrained $K_0$ are negligibly small. The difference in predictions using the GR and the ST theory appears only for massive neutron stars, and is significantly smaller than the differences resulting from variations in the symmetry energy. We conclude that within the ST theory of gravity, the EOS-gravity degeneracy has been broken by the recent relativistic pulsar measurements, and that measurements of neutron star properties sensitive to the compactness constrain mainly the density dependence of the symmetry energy.

Rotation and alignment of high-$j$ orbitals in transfermium nuclei

The structure of nuclei with $Z\sim100$ is investigated systematically by the Cranked Shell Model (CSM) with pairing correlations treated by a Particle-Number Conserving (PNC) method. In the PNC method, the particle number is conserved and the Pauli blocking effects are taken into account exactly. By fitting the experimental single-particle spectra in these nuclei, a new set of Nilsson parameters ($κ$ and $μ$) is proposed. The experimental kinematic moments of inertia and the band-head energies are reproduced quite well by the PNC-CSM calculations. The band crossing, the effects of high-$j$ intruder orbitals and deformation are discussed in detail.

Systematic investigation of the rotational bands in nuclei with $Z \approx 100$ using a particle-number conserving method based on a cranked shell model

The rotational bands in nuclei with $Z \approx 100$ are investigated systematically by using a cranked shell model (CSM) with the pairing correlations treated by a particle-number conserving (PNC) method, in which the blocking effects are taken into account exactly. By fitting the experimental single-particle spectra in these nuclei, a new set of Nilsson parameters ($κ$ and $μ$) and deformation parameters ($\varepsilon_2$ and $\varepsilon_4$) are proposed. The experimental kinematic moments of inertia for the rotational bands in even-even, odd-$A$ and odd-odd nuclei, and the bandhead energies of the 1-quasiparticle bands in odd-$A$ nuclei, are reproduced quite well by the PNC-CSM calculations. By analyzing the $ω$-dependence of the occupation probability of each cranked Nilsson orbital near the Fermi surface and the contributions of valence orbitals in each major shell to the angular momentum alignment, the upbending mechanism in this region is understood clearly.
