DRL-Enabled Trajectory Planing for UAV-Assisted VLC: Optimal Altitude and Reward Design

Recently, the integration of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and visible light communication (VLC) technologies has emerged as a promising solution to offer flexible communication and efficient lighting. This letter investigates the three-dimensional trajectory planning in a UAV-assisted VLC system, where a UAV is dispatched to collect data from ground users (GUs). The core objective is to develop a trajectory planning framework that minimizes UAV flight distance, which is equivalent to maximizing the data collection efficiency. This issue is formulated as a challenging mixed-integer non-convex optimization problem. To tackle it, we first derive a closed-form optimal flight altitude under specific VLC channel gain threshold. Subsequently, we optimize the UAV horizontal trajectory by integrating a novel pheromone-driven reward mechanism with the twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient algorithm, which enables adaptive UAV motion strategy in complex environments. Simulation results validate that the derived optimal altitude effectively reduces the flight distance by up to 35% compared to baseline methods. Additionally, the proposed reward mechanism significantly shortens the convergence steps by approximately 50%, demonstrating notable efficiency gains in the context of UAV-assisted VLC data collection.

Overcoming BS Down-Tilt for Air-Ground ISAC Coverage: Antenna Design, Beamforming and User Scheduling

Integrated sensing and communication holds great promise for low-altitude economy applications. However, conventional downtilted base stations primarily provide sectorized forward lobes for ground services, failing to sense air targets due to backward blind zones. In this paper, a novel antenna structure is proposed to enable air-ground beam steering, facilitating simultaneous full-space sensing and communication (S&C). Specifically, instead of inserting a reflector behind the antenna array for backlobe mitigation, an omni-steering plate is introduced to collaborate with the active array for omnidirectional beamforming. Building on this hardware innovation, sum S&C mutual information (MI) is maximized, jointly optimizing user scheduling, passive coefficients of the omni-steering plate, and beamforming of the active array. The problem is decomposed into two subproblems: one for optimizing passive coefficients via Riemannian gradient on the manifold, and the other for optimizing user scheduling and active array beamforming. Exploiting relationships among S&C MI, data decoding MMSE, and parameter estimation MMSE, the original subproblem is equivalently transformed into a sum weighted MMSE problem, rigorously established via the Lagrangian and first-order optimality conditions. Simulations show that the proposed algorithm outperforms baselines in sum-MI and MSE, while providing 360 sensing coverage. Beampattern analysis further demonstrates effective user scheduling and accurate target alignment.

UAV-Mounted Movable Antenna: Joint Optimization of UAV Placement and Antenna Configuration

Recently, movable antennas (MAs) have garnered immense attention due to their capability to favorably alter channel conditions through agile movement. In this letter, we delve into a spectrum sharing system enabled by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) mounted MAs, thereby introducing a new degree of freedom vertically alongside the horizontal local mobility for MAs. Our objective is to maximize the minimum beamforming gain for secondary users (SUs) while ensuring that interference to the primary users (PUs) remains below a predefined threshold, which necessitates a joint optimization involving the UAV's height, the antenna weight vector (AWV), and the antenna position vector (APV). However, the formulated optimization problem is non-convex and challenging to solve optimally. To tackle this issue, we propose an alternating optimization algorithm that optimizes the UAV's height, APV and AWV in an iterative manner, thus yielding a near-optimal solution. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme as well as its ability to deliver full beamforming gain to SUs with reduced computational complexity.

UAV-Assisted Image Acquisition: 3D UAV Trajectory Design and Camera Control

In this paper, we consider a new unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted oblique image acquisition system where a UAV is dispatched to take images of multiple ground targets (GTs). To study the three-dimensional (3D) UAV trajectory design for image acquisition, we first propose a novel UAV-assisted oblique photography model, which characterizes the image resolution with respect to the UAV's 3D image-taking location. Then, we formulate a 3D UAV trajectory optimization problem to minimize the UAV's traveling distance subject to the image resolution constraints. The formulated problem is shown to be equivalent to a modified 3D traveling salesman problem with neighbourhoods, which is NP-hard in general. To tackle this difficult problem, we propose an iterative algorithm to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution efficiently, by alternately optimizing the UAV's 3D image-taking waypoints and its visiting order for the GTs. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm significantly reduces the UAV's traveling distance as compared to various benchmark schemes, while meeting the image resolution requirement.

QoE-Driven UAV-Enabled Pseudo-Analog Wireless Video Broadcast: A Joint Optimization of Power and Trajectory

The explosive demands for high quality mobile video services have caused heavy overload to the existing cellular networks. Although the small cell has been proposed to alleviate such a problem, the network operators may not be interested in deploying numerous base stations (BSs) due to expensive infrastructure construction and maintenance. The unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can provide the low-cost and quick deployment, which can support high-quality line-of-sight communications and have become promising mobile BSs. In this paper, we propose a quality-of-experience (QoE)-driven UAV-enabled pseudo-analog wireless video broadcast scheme, which provides mobile video broadcast services for ground users (GUs). Due to limited energy available in UAV, the aim of the proposed scheme is to maximize the minimum peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of GUs' video reconstruction quality by jointly optimizing the transmission power allocation strategy and the UAV trajectory. Firstly, the reconstructed video quality at GUs is defined under the constraints of the UAV's total energy and motion mechanism, and the proposed scheme is formulated as a complex non-convex optimization problem. Then, the optimization problem is simplified to obtain a tractable suboptimal solution with the help of the block coordinate descent model and the successive convex approximation model. Finally, the experimental results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. Specifically, the proposed scheme can achieve over 1.6dB PSNR gains in terms of GUs' minimum PSNR, compared with the state-of-the-art schemes, e.g., DVB, SoftCast, and SharpCast.

Human-Perception-Oriented Pseudo Analog Video Transmissions with Deep Learning

Recently, pseudo analog transmission has gained increasing attentions due to its ability to alleviate the cliff effect in video multicast scenarios. The existing pseudo analog systems are sorely optimized under the minimum mean squared error criterion without taking the perceptual video quality into consideration. In this paper, we propose a human-perception-based pseudo analog video transmission system named ROIC-Cast, which aims to intelligently enhance the transmission quality of the region-of-interest (ROI) parts. Firstly, the classic deep learning based saliency detection algorithm is adopted to decompose the continuous video sequences into ROI and non-ROI blocks. Secondly, an effective compression method is used to reduce the data amount of side information generated by the ROI extraction module. Then, the power allocation scheme is formulated as a convex problem, and the optimal transmission power for both ROI and non-ROI blocks is derived in a closed form. Finally, the simulations are conducted to validate the proposed system by comparing with a few of existing systems, e.g., KMV-Cast, SoftCast, and DAC-RAN. The proposed ROIC-Cast can achieve over 4.1dB peak signal- to-noise ratio gains of ROI compared with other systems, given the channel signal-to-noise ratio as -5dB, 0dB, 5dB, and 10dB, respectively. This significant performance improvement is due to the automatic ROI extraction, high-efficiency data compression as well as adaptive power allocation.

A Design of SDR-based Pseudo-Analog Wireless Video Transmission System

The pseudo-analog wireless video transmission technology can improve the effectiveness, reliability, and robustness of the conventional digital system in video broadcast scenarios. Although some prototypes of IEEE 802.11 series have been developed for researchers to do simulations and experiments, they are usually expensive and provide very limited access to the physical layer. More importantly, these prototypes cannot be used to verify the correctness of the new proposed pseudo-analog wireless video transmission algorithms directly due to limited modulation modes they can support. In this paper, we present a novel design of software radio platform (SDR)-based pseudo-analog wireless video transceiver which is completely transparent and allows users to learn all the implementation details. Firstly, we prove that the analog method can also achieve the optimal performance as the digital method from the perspective of the rate-distortion theory. Then, we describe the two hardware implementation difficulties existed in the designing process including the data format modification and the non-linear distortion. Next, we introduce the implementation details of the designed transceiver. Finally, we analyze the performance of the designed transceiver. Specifically, the results show that the designed system can work effectively in both simulations and experiments.

The prion-like folding behavior in aggregated proteins

We investigate the folding behavior of protein sequences by numerically studying all sequences with maximally compact lattice model through exhaustive enumeration. We get the prion-like behavior of protein folding. Individual proteins remaining stable in the isolated native state may change their conformations when they aggregate. We observe the folding properties as the interfacial interaction strength changes, and find that the strength must be strong enough before the propagation of the most stable structures happens.

Medium effects on the selection of sequences folding into stable proteins in a simple model

We study the medium effects on the selection of sequences in protein folding by taking account of the surface potential in HP-model. Our analysis on the proportion of H and P monomers in the sequences gives a direct interpretation that the lowly designable structures possess small average gap. The numerical calculation by means of our model exhibits that the surface potential enhances the average gap of highly designable structures. It also shows that a most stable structure may be no longer the most stable one if the medium parameters changed.
