An informal introduction to dg categories

In this informal introduction to dg categories, the slogan is that dg categories are more rudimentary than triangulated categories. We recall some details on the dg quotient category introduced by Bernhard Keller and Vladimir Drinfeld.

Leavitt path algebras, $B_\infty$-algebras and Keller's conjecture for singular Hochschild cohomology

For a finite quiver without sinks, we establish an isomorphism in the homotopy category $\mathrm {Ho}(B_\infty)$ of $B_{\infty}$-algebras between the Hochschild cochain complex of the Leavitt path algebra $L$ and the singular Hochschild cochain complex of the corresponding radical square zero algebra $Λ$. Combining this isomorphism with a description of the dg singularity category of $Λ$ in terms of the dg perfect derived category of $L$, we verify Keller's conjecture for the singular Hochschild cohomology of $Λ$. More precisely, we prove that there is an isomorphism in $\mathrm{Ho}(B_\infty)$ between the singular Hochschild cochain complex of $Λ$ and the Hochschild cochain complex of the dg singularity category of $Λ$. One ingredient of the proof is the following duality theorem on $B_\infty$-algebras: for any $B_\infty$-algebra, there is a natural $B_\infty$-isomorphism between its opposite $B_\infty$-algebra and its transpose $B_\infty$-algebra. We prove that Keller's conjecture is invariant under one-point (co)extensions and singular equivalences with levels. Consequently, Keller's conjecture holds for those algebras obtained inductively from $Λ$ by one-point (co)extensions and singular equivalences with levels. These algebras include all finite dimensional gentle algebras.

Skew group categories, algebras associated to Cartan matrices and folding of root lattices

For a finite group action on a finite EI quiver, we construct its `orbifold' quotient EI quiver. The free EI category associated to the quotient EI quiver is equivalent to the skew group category with respect to the given group action. Specializing the result to a finite group action on a finite acyclic quiver, we prove that, under reasonable conditions, the skew group category of the path category is equivalent to a finite EI category of Cartan type. If the ground field is of characteristic $p$ and the acting group is a cyclic $p$-group, we prove that the skew group algebra of the path algebra is Morita equivalent to the algebra associated to a Cartan matrix, defined in [C. Geiss, B. Leclerc, and J. Schröer, Quivers with relations for symmetrizable Cartan matrices I: Foundations, Invent. Math. 209 (2017), 61--158]. We apply the Morita equivalence to construct a categorification of the folding projection between the root lattices with respect to a graph automorphism. In the Dynkin cases, the restriction of the categorification to indecomposable modules corresponds to the folding of positive roots.

Singular equivalences induced by bimodules and quadratic monomial algebras

We investigate the problem when the tensor functor by a bimodule yields a singular equivalence. It turns out that this problem is equivalent to the one when the Hom functor given by the same bimodule induces a triangle equivalence between the homotopy categories of acyclic complexes of injective modules. We give conditions on when a bimodule appears in a pair of bimodules, that defines a singular equivalence with level. We construct an explicit bimodule, which yields a singular equivalence between a quadratic monomial algebra and its associated algebra with radical square zero. Under certain conditions which include the Gorenstein cases, the bimodule does appear in a pair of bimodules defining a singular equivalence with level.

Frobenius functors and Gorenstein homological properties

We prove that any faithful Frobenius functor between abelian categories preserves the Gorenstein projective dimension of objects. Consequently, it preserves and reflects Gorenstein projective objects. We give conditions on when a Frobenius functor preserves the stable categories of Gorenstein projective objects, the singularity categories and the Gorenstein defect categories, respectively. In the appendix, we give a direct proof of the following known result: for an abelian category with enough projectives and injectives, its global Gorenstein projective dimension coincides with its global Gorenstein injective dimension.

Deriving Milnor's theorem on pullback rings

The classical theorem of Milnor on pullback rings states that the category of projective modules over a pullback ring is equivalent to a certain category of gluing triples consisting of projective modules. We prove an analogous result on the level of derived categories, where the equivalence has to be replaced by an epivalence.

The dual actions, equivariant autoequivalences and stable tilting objects

For a finite abelian group action on a linear category, we study the dual action given by the character group acting on the category of equivariant objects. We prove that the groups of equivariant autoequivalences on these two categories are isomorphic. In the triangulated situation, this isomorphism implies that the classifications of stable tilting objects for these two categories are in a natural bijection. We apply these results to stable tilting complexes on weighted projective lines of tubular type.

The lower extension groups and quotient categories

For a certain full additive subcategory X of an additive category A, one defines the lower extension groups in relative homological algebra. We show that these groups are isomorphic to the suspended Hom groups in the Verdier quotient category of the bounded homotopy category of A by that of X. Alternatively, these groups are isomorphic to the negative cohomological groups of the Hom complexes in the dg quotient category A/X, where both A and X are viewed as dg categories concentrated in degree zero.

Recollements, comma categories and morphic enhancements

For each recollement of triangulated categories, there is an epivalence between the middle category and the comma category associated to a triangle functor from the category on the right to the category on the left. For a morphic enhancement of a triangulated category $\mathcal{T}$, there are three explicit ideals of the enhancing category, whose corresponding factor categories are all equivalent to the module category over $\mathcal{T}$. Examples related to inflation categories and weighted projective lines are discussed.

Liftable derived equivalences and objective categories

We give two proofs to the following theorem and its generalization: if a finite dimensional algebra $A$ is derived equivalent to a smooth projective scheme, then any derived equivalence between $A$ and another algebra $B$ is standard, that is, isomorphic to the derived tensor functor by a two-sided tilting complex. The main ingredients of the proofs are as follows: (1) between the derived categories of two module categories, liftable functors coincide with standard functors; (2) any derived equivalence between a module category and an abelian category is uniquely factorized as the composition of a pseudo-identity and a liftable derived equivalence; (3) the derived category of coherent sheaves on a certain projective scheme is triangle-objective, that is, any triangle autoequivalence on it, which preserves the the isomorphism classes of complexes, is necessarily isomorphic to the identity functor.

The finite EI categories of Cartan type

To each symmetrizable Cartan matrix, we associate a finite free EI category. We prove that the corresponding category algebra is isomorphic to the algebra defined in [C. Geiss, B. Leclerc, and J. Schröer, Quivers with relations for symmetrizable Cartan matrices I: Foundations, Invent. Math. 209 (2017), 61--158], which is associated to another symmetrizable Cartan matrix. In certain cases, the algebra isomorphism provides an algebraic enrichment of the well-known correspondence between symmetrizable Cartan matrices and graphs with automorphisms.

Representability and autoequivalence groups

For a finite dimensional algebra $A$, we prove that the bounded homotopy category of projective $A$-modules and the bounded derived category of $A$-modules are dual to each other via certain categories of locally-finite cohomological functors. The duality gives rise to a $2$-categorical duality between certain strict $2$-categories involving the bounded homotopy categories and bounded derived categories, respectively. We apply the $2$-categorical duality to the study of triangle autoequivalence groups. These results are analogous to the ones in [M.R. Ballard, {\em Derived categories of sheaves on singular schemes with an application to reconstruction}, Adv. Math. {\bf 227} (2011), 895--919].

Derived equivalences via HRS-tilting

Let $\mathcal{A}$ be an abelian category and $\mathcal{B}$ be the Happel-Reiten-Smalø tilt of $\mathcal{A}$ with respect to a torsion pair. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a derived equivalence between $\mathcal{B}$ and $\mathcal{A}$, which is compatible with the inclusion of $\mathcal{B}$ into the derived category of $\mathcal{A}$. In particular, any splitting torsion pair induces a derived equivalence. We prove that for the realization functor of any bounded $t$-structure, its denseness implies its fully-faithfulness.

Gorenstein Homological Algebra of Artin Algebras

Gorenstein homological algebra is a kind of relative homological algebra which has been developed to a high level since more than four decades. In this report we review the basic theory of Gorenstein homological algebra of artin algebras. It is hoped that such a theory will help to understand the famous Gorenstein symmetric conjecture of artin algebras. With only few exceptions all the results in this report are contained in the existing literature. We have tried to keep the exposition as self-contained as possible. This report can be viewed as a preparation for learning the newly developed theory of virtually Gorenstein algebras. In Chapter 2 we recall the basic notions in Gorenstein homological algebra with particular emphasis on finitely generated Gorenstein-projective modules, Gorenstein algebras and CM-finite algebras. In Chapter 3 based on a theorem by Beligiannis we study the Gorenstein-projective resolutions and various Gorenstein dimensions; we also discuss briefly Gorenstein derived categories in the sense of Gao and Zhang. We include three appendixes: Appendix A treats cotorsion pairs; Appendix B sketches a proof of the theorem by Beligiannis; Appendix C provides a list of open problems in Gorenstein homological algebra of artin algebras.

Gorenstein homological properties of tensor rings

Let $R$ be a two-sided noetherian ring and $M$ be a nilpotent $R$-bimodule, which is finitely generated on both sides. We study Gorenstein homological properties of the tensor ring $T_R(M)$. Under certain conditions, the ring $R$ is Gorenstein if and only if so is $T_R(M)$. We characterize Gorenstein projective $T_R(M)$-modules in terms of $R$-modules.

An explicit projective bimodule resolution of a Leavitt path algebra

We construct an explicit projective bimodule resolution for the Leavitt path algebra of a row-finite quiver. We prove that the Leavitt path algebra of a row-countable quiver has Hochschild cohomolgical dimension at most one, that is, it is quasi-free in the sense of Cuntz-Quillen. The construction of the resolution relies on an explicit derivation of the Leavitt path algebra.

The D-standard and K-standard categories

We introduce the notions of a $\mathbf{D}$-standard abelian category and a $\mathbf{K}$-standard additive category. We prove that for a finite dimensional algebra $A$, its module category is $\mathbf{D}$-standard if and only if any derived autoequivalence on $A$ is standard, that is, given by a two-sided tilting complex. We prove that if the subcategory of projective $A$-modules is $\mathbf{K}$-standard, then the module category is $\mathbf{D}$-standard. We provide new examples of $\mathbf{D}$-standard module categories.

The Auslander bijections and universal extensions

Universal extensions arise naturally in the Auslander bijections. For an abelian category having Auslander-Reiten duality, we exploit a bijection triangle, which involves the Auslander bijections, universal extensions and the Auslander-Reiten duality. Some consequences are given, in particular, a conjecture by Ringel is verified.
