Seeing Beyond RGB Capabilities: Data-Driven and Physics-Guided Broadband Spectral Extrapolation of Plasmonic Nanostructures by Deep Learning

Localized surface plasmons can confine light within a deep-subwavelength volume comparable to the scale of atoms and molecules, enabling ultrasensitive responses to near-field variations. On the other hand, this extreme localization also inevitably amplifies the unwanted noise from the response of local morphological imperfections, leading to complex spectral variations and reduced consistency across the plasmonic nanostructures. Seeking uniform optical responses has therefore long been a sought-after goal in nanoplasmonics. However, conventional probing techniques by dark-field (DF) confocal microscopy, such as image analysis or spectral measurements, can be inaccurate and time-consuming, respectively. Here, we introduce SPARX, a deep-learning-powered paradigm that surpasses conventional imaging and spectroscopic capabilities. In particular, SPARX can batch-predict broadband DF spectra (e.g., 500-1000 nm) of numerous nanoparticles simultaneously from an information-limited RGB image (i.e., below 700 nm). It achieves this extrapolative inference beyond the camera's capture capabilities by learning the underlying physical relationships among multiple orders of optical resonances. The spectral predictions only take milliseconds, achieving a speedup of three to four orders of magnitude compared to traditional spectral acquisition, which may take from hours to days. As a proof-of-principle demonstration for screening identical resonances, the selection accuracy achieved by SPARX is comparable to that of conventional spectroscopy techniques. This breakthrough paves the way for consistent plasmonic applications and next-generation microscopies.

Rich unconventional Hall effects in a single quasi-kagome Kondo Weyl semimetal candidate Ce$_3$TiSb$_5$

It is generally believed that electronic correlation, geometric frustration, and topology, \textit{individually}, can facilitate the emergence of various intriguing properties that have attracted a broad audience for both fundamental research and potential applications. Here, we report a series of unconventional Hall effects observed in a \textit{single} compound - quasi-kagome Kondo Weyl semimetal candidate Ce$_3$TiSb$_5$. In the paramagnetic phase, signature of dynamic $c$-$f$ hybridization is revealed by a reduction of anomalous Hall effect and is connected to frustration-promoted incoherent Kondo scattering. A large topological Hall effect exceeding 0.2 $\mu\Omega\cdot$cm is found at low temperatures, which should be ascribed to the non-collinear magnetic texture. In addition, a peculiar loop-shaped Hall effect with switching chirality is also seen, which is inferred to be associated with magnetic domain walls that pin history-dependent spin chirality and / or Fermi-arc surface states projected from the in-gap Weyl nodes. These exotic results place Ce$_3$TiSb$_5$ in a regime of highly-frustrated antiferromagnetic dense Kondo lattice with a nontrivial topology on an ``extended" global phase diagram, and highlight the interplay among electronic correlation, geometric frustration and topology.

$^{27}$Al NMR study of the magnetic Weyl semimetal CeAlGe

Motivated by the recent observations of electronic correlation effect [M. Corasaniti \textit{et al}., Phys. Rev. B \textbf{104}, L121112 (2021)] and topology-stabilized magnetic fluctuations [N. Drucker \textit{et al}., Nat. Commun. \textbf{14}, 5182 (2023)] in the noncentrosymmetric magnetic Weyl semimetal candidate CeAlGe, we performed systematic studies on the local static and dynamic spin susceptibilities by $^{27}$Al nuclear magnetic resonance. Due to the large spin susceptibility from Ce-$4f$ electrons, the theoretically predicted responses from Weyl fermions are overwhelmed. A Knight-shift anomaly is observed below $T^*\sim50$ K, a signature of the onset of coherent Kondo coupling. In addition, an anomalous peak is found in $1/T_1T$ near 15 K, well above the magnetic ordering temperature $T_N \approx 5$ K, which probably is a consequence of topology-stabilized magnetic fluctuations. These results highlight the interplay among electronic correlation, magnetism and band topology in this family of Kondo Weyl semimetals.

Discovery of a Magnetic Topological Semimetal Eu$_3$In$_2$As$_4$ with a Single Pair of Weyl Points

Magnetic Weyl semimetal (MWS) is a unique topological state with open surface Fermi arc states and other exotic transport phenomena. However, most reported MWSs show multiple pairs of Weyl points and complicated Fermi surfaces, which increases the difficulty of the investigation into the intrinsic chiral transport property. In this wor, we successfully synthesized a soft magnetic Weyl semimetal Eu$_3$In$_2$As$_4$ with a single pair of Weyl points under magnetic fields. The Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) oscillation with a single frequency, as well as a linear hall resistance with the same carrier density, is observed up to 50 Tesla, indicating a single pair of Weyl points around the Fermi level with a massless fermion ($m^* = 0.121 m_0$, $π$ Berry phase). Such a single pair of Weyl points is further confirmed by the density functional theory calculations. The magnetic ordering and band topology can be easily tuned by the external magnetic field. The field-induced MWS Eu$_3$In$_2$As$_4$ with a single pair of Weyl points is a good platform to detect chiral transport properties, including possible quantum anomalous Hall effect.

Ultrasonic investigation of the Kondo semimetal CeBi

We report the elastic properties of the Kondo semimetal CeBi by resonant ultrasound spectroscopy measurements at zero magnetic field. Clear elastic softening is found in bulk modulus $C_B$ below $\sim 60$ K. Such a softening in $C_B$, in addition to the anomalous temperature dependent Poisson's ratio, is hardly attributable to multipolar response for stable localized $4f$ orbital, but can be well described by a two-band model arising from the hybridization between conduction- and $4f$- electrons. These results probably are consequences of the valence fluctuations in this Kondo semimetal as originally suggested by a Fermi-surface expansion observed in a previous angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study [P. Li \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. B $\mathbf{100}$, 155110 (2019)].

Pressure tuning domain-wall chirality in noncentrosymmetric magnetic Weyl semimetal CeAlGe

Topological magnetic Weyl semimetals have been proposed to host controllable chiral domain walls which bear a great prospect in device applications. To exploit them in applications, it is important to have a proper way to tune and manipulate these domain walls. One possible means is through magnetoelastic coupling. The involvement of rare earth in the lately proposed $R$Al$X$ ($R$=rare earth, $X$=Si and Ge) family magnetic Weyl semimetals may provide such a platform. Here we present transport and thermodynamic properties of CeAlGe under hydrostatic pressure. We find that pressure enhances the antiferromagnetic exchange in CeAlGe but essentially retains its magnetic structure. Large topological Hall effect with pronounced loop shape is observed within the magnetically ordered state, and it splits into two regions under pressure. Such an unusual electromagnetic response is inferred to be a consequence of chiral magnetic domain walls. The unprecedented concomitance of its evolution under pressure and the reentrance of antiferromagnetic order strongly suggest the capability of switching on/off this electromagnetic response in noncentrosymmetric magnetic Weyl semimetals via magnetoelastic coupling.

$^{75}$As NMR study of the antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice compound CeNiAsO

We revisit the magnetic properties of the antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice CeNiAsO by $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. Our results confirm two successive antiferromagnetic transitions of Ce moments at $T_{N1}=9.0(3)$ K and $T_{N2}=7.0(3)$ K. Incommensurate and commensurate antiferromagnetic orders are suggested for $T_{N2}<T<T_{N1}$ and $T<T_{N2}$ respectively, consistent with previous neutron and muon experiments. A Knight shift anomaly, characterized by the failure of $K(T)-χ(T)$ scaling, is observed below $T^*\sim15$ K, which gives a measure of the onset of coherent $c-f$ correlations. This energy scale is further confirmed by the spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$). The analysis of spin dynamics also reveals a quasi-two-dimensional character of spin fluctuations in CeNiAsO. This work paves the way for further $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance studies under pressure.

Elastic properties of a Sc-Zr-Nb-Ta-Rh-Pd high-entropy alloy superconductor

We report a comprehensive study on the elastic properties of a hexanary high-entropy alloy superconductor (ScZrNbTa)$_{0.685}$[RhPd]$_{0.315}$ at room and cryogenic temperatures, by Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy experiments. The derived elastic constants are bulk modulus $K=132.7$ GPa, Young's modulus $E=121.0$ GPa, shear modulus $G=44.9$ GPa, and Poisson's ratio $ν$=0.348 for room temperature. The Young's and shear moduli are $\sim 10\%$ larger than those in NbTi superconductor with similar $T_c$, while the ductility is comparable. Moreover, the mechanical performance is further enhanced at cryogenic temperature. Our work confirms the advantageous mechanical properties of high-entropy alloy superconductors and suggests the application prospects.

Uniaxial stress effect on the quasi-one-dimensional Kondo lattice CeCo$_2$Ga$_8$

Quantum critical phenomena in the quasi-one-dimensional limit remains an open issue. We report the uniaxial stress effect on the quasi-one-dimensional Kondo lattice CeCo$_2$Ga$_8$ by electric transport and AC heat capacity measurements. CeCo$_2$Ga$_8$ is speculated to sit in close vicinity but on the quantum-disordered side of a quantum critical point. Upon compressing the ${c}$ axis, parallel to the Ce-Ce chain, the onset of coherent Kondo effect is enhanced. In contrast, the electronic specific heat diverges more rapidly at low temperature when the intra-chain distance is elongated by compressions along {a} or {b} axes. These results suggest that a tensile intra-chain strain ($\varepsilon_c >0$) pushes CeCo$_2$Ga$_8$ closer to a quantum critical point, while a compressive intra-chain strain ($\varepsilon_c <0$) likely causes departure. Our work provides a rare paradigm of manipulation near a quantum critical point in a quasi-1D Kondo lattice by uniaxial stress, and paves the way for further investigations on the unique feature of quantum criticality in the quasi-1D limit.

On the maximum Zagreb indices of bipartite graphs with given connectivity

The first Zagreb index $M_{1}$ of a graph is defined as the sum of the square of every vertex degree, and the second Zagreb index $M_{2}$ of a graph is defined as the sum of the product of vertex degrees of each pair of adjacent vertices. In this paper, we study the Zagreb indices of bipartite graphs of order $n$ with $κ(G)=k$ (resp. $κ'(G)=s$) and sharp upper bounds are obtained for $M_1(G)$ and $M_2(G)$ for $G\in \mathcal{V}^k_n$ (resp. $\mathcal{E}^s_n$), where $\mathcal{V}^k_n$ is the set of bipartite graphs of order $n$ with $κ(G)=k$, and $\mathcal{E}^s_n$ is the set of bipartite graphs of order $n$ with $κ'(G)=s$.

PrBi: Topology meets quadrupolar degrees of freedom

Novel materials incorporating electronic degrees of freedom other than charge, including spin, orbital or valley \textit{et al} have manifested themselves to be of the great interests and applicable potentials. Recently, the multipolar degrees of freedom have attracted remarkable attention in the electronic correlated effects. In this work, we systematically studied the transport, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of the topological semimetal candidate PrBi in the framework of crystalline electric field theory. Our results demonstrate the $Γ_3$ non-Kramers doublet as the ground state of Pr$^{3+}$ (4$f^2$) ions. This ground state is nonmagnetic but carries a non-zero quadrupolar moment $\langle\hat{O}_2^0\rangle$. A quadrupolar phase transition is inferred below 0.08 K. No obvious quadrupolar Kondo effect can be identified. Ultrahigh-field quantum oscillation measurements confirm PrBi as a semimetal with non-trivial Berry phase and low total carrier density 0.06 /f.u. We discuss the interplay between low carrier density and $4f^2$ quadrupolar moment, and ascribe the weak quadrupolar ordering and Kondo effect to consequences of the low carrier density. PrBi, thus, opens a new window to the physics of topology and strongly correlated effect with quadrupolar degrees of freedom in the low-carrier-density limit, evoking the need for a reexamination of the Nozières exhaustion problem in the context of multi-channel Kondo effect.

Synthesis and physical properties of CeRu$_2$As$_2$ and CeIr$_2$As$_2$

We studied the physical properties of two Kondo-lattice compounds, CeRu$_2$As$_2$ and CeIr$_2$As$_2$, by a combination of electric transport, magnetic and thermodynamic measurements. They are of ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type and CaBe$_2$Ge$_2$-type crystalline structures, respectively. CeRu$_2$As$_2$ shows localized long-range antiferromagnetic ordering below $T_N$=4.3 K, with a moderate electronic Sommerfeld coefficient $γ_0$=35 mJ/mol$\cdot$K$^2$. A field-induced metamagnetic transition is observed near 2 T below $T_N$. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on aligned CeRu$_2$As$_2$ powders suggest that it has an easy axis and that the cerium moments align uniaxially along $\mathbf{c}$ axis. In contrast, CeIr$_2$As$_2$ is a magnetically nonordered heavy-fermion metal with enhanced $γ_0$$>$300 mJ/mol$\cdot$K$^2$. The initial onset Kondo temperatures of the two compounds are respectively 6 K and 30 K. We discuss the role of the crystal structure to the strength of Kondo coupling. This work provides two new dense Kondo-lattice materials for further investigations on electronic correlation, quantum criticality and heavy-electron effects.

BaFe2As2 Surface Domains and Domain Walls: Mirroring the Bulk Spin Structure

High-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements on BaFe2As2-one of the parent compounds of the iron-based superconductors-reveals a (1x1) As-terminated unit cell on the (001) surface. However, there are significant differences of the surface unit cell compared to the bulk: only one of the two As atoms in the unit cell is imaged and domain walls between different (1x1) regions display a C2 symmetry at the surface. It should have been C2v if the STM image reflected the geometric structure of the surface or the orthorhombic bulk. The inequivalent As atoms and the bias dependence of the domain walls indicate that the origin of the STM image is primarily electronic not geometric. We argue that the surface electronic topography mirrors the bulk spin structure of BaFe2As2, via strong orbital-spin coupling.
