Ultrafast electron crystallography reveals the atomic pathway of a light-driven correlated insulator-to-metal transition

Ultrafast phase transitions in correlated materials are often inferred from selected diffraction peak intensities or diffraction peak displacements, leaving the underlying three-dimensional atomic trajectories elusive. Resolving these trajectories is essential for identifying which atomic motions drive changes in electronic properties and how they couple to electronic degrees of freedom. We address this challenge in vanadium dioxide (VO2), a correlated oxide with a near-room-temperature transition between the insulating monoclinic (M1) phase and metallic rutile (R) phase. For this purpose, we introduce ultrafast three-dimensional electron diffraction, which enables refinement of the transient unit cell and internal V and O coordinates, revealing the V-V dimerization and zigzag motion during the phase transition. The refined atomic coordinates follow a linear trajectory in real space during the transition, in contrast to nonlinear or sequential transformation pathways inferred from more indirect observables in earlier work. Quantum many-body calculations treating each V-V pair as a correlated unit show that dimerization creates the level splitting responsible for the electronic gap, which is further enhanced by nonlocal electronic interactions between the paired V atoms. The gap collapses when dimerization is lost. This work turns time-resolved diffraction from order-parameter tracking into transient crystallography, directly connecting atomic trajectories to electronic mechanisms in correlated materials.

Beyond Direct Answering: Aligning Educational LLMs as Socratic Guides via Heuristic Reinforcement Learning

Large language models (LLMs) deployed in educational settings often behave as direct answerers: they disclose target concepts in the opening turn instead of guiding students through progressive inquiry, as Socratic pedagogy prescribes. We present HeuristicEdu, a two-phase pipeline that aligns Qwen2.5-7B toward Socratic tutoring via supervised warm-up and Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO). Training uses SocraticEdu, 797 multi-turn Chinese children's science dialogues reconstructed from a live platform, with a heuristic reward over cognitive depth (R_cog), curiosity engagement (R_eng), and directness (R_dir), together with a K_query correction for student-introduced terms. We introduce Scaffolding Effectiveness (SE) and Conversation Depth (CD) to evaluate outcomes beyond surface fluency. On 30 held-out questions, the best GRPO variant improves SE from 30.0% to 63.3% and lowers keyword leakage from 30.0% to 13.3%. Notably, this best variant omits the directness penalty during optimization, suggesting that explicit anti-leakage terms can conflict with gradient-based behavioral alignment. An unaligned Qwen-72B baseline reaches 0% SE and 96.7% leakage, showing that scale alone does not induce Socratic behavior.

Improving data quality for 3D electron diffraction (3D ED) by Gatan Image Filter and a new crystal tracking method

3D ED is an effective technique to determine the structures of submicron- or nano-sized crystals. In this paper, we implemented energy-filtered 3D ED using a Gatan Energy Filter (GIF) in both selected area electron diffraction mode and micro/nanoprobe mode. We explained the setup in detail, which improves the accessibility of energy-filtered 3D ED experiments as more electron microscopes are equipped with a GIF than an in-column filter. We also proposed a crystal tracking method in STEM mode using live HAADF image stream. This method enables us to collect energy-filtered 3D ED datasets in STEM mode with a larger tilt range without foregoing any frames. In order to compare the differences between energy-filtered 3D ED and normal 3D ED data, three crystalline samples have been studied in detail. We observed that the final R1 will improve 20% to 30% for energy-filtered datasets compared with unfiltered datasets and the structure became more reasonable. We also discussed the possible reasons that lead to the improvement.

InsteaDMatic: Towards cross-platform automated continuous rotation electron diffraction

A DigitalMicrograph script InsteaDMatic has been developed to facilitate rapid automated continuous rotation electron diffraction (cRED) data acquisition. The script coordinates microscope functions, such as stage rotation, camera functions relevant for data collection, and stores the experiment metadata. The script is compatible with any microscope that can be controlled by DigitalMicrograph and has been tested on both JEOL and Thermo Fisher Scientific microscopes. A proof-of-concept has been performed through employing InsteaDMatic for data collection and structure determination of a ZSM-5 zeolite. The influence of illumination settings and electron dose rate on the quality of diffraction data, unit cell determination and structure solution has been investigated in order to optimize the data acquisition procedure.
