Theoretical analysis of the non-uniform OAM source based on an equivalent source transformation

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) has gradually become a research hotspot in radar, communication and other fields because of its phase distribution. However it encounters some problems in the real practice owing to its inherent characteristics. Recently OAM mode group has been proposed to solve these problems. In this paper, a non-uniform OAM source is used to generate the OAM mode-group (MG) directly. The radiation field is analyzed based on an equivalent source transformation. Taking the partial arc transmitting (PAT) scheme as an example, the non-uniform source is equivalenced as a group of uniform OAM sources by calculated its Fourier transform. This work provides theoretical guidance for the design of non-uniform OAM antenna in the RF domain.

A Compact Pattern Reconfigurable Antenna Based on Multimode Plane Spiral OAM

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) has attracted great interest in the past few decades due to its helical phase characteristics. It has been proved that Plane spiral OAM (PSOAM) has potential in pattern reconfiguration of azimuthal domain because it solves the difficulty of mode superposition caused by different main lobe directions of different modes. However, the absence of a compact high-purity multimode PSOAM antenna hinders the development of PSOAM applications. In this paper, a compact high-purity 8-mode PSOAM antenna consisting of a coaxial resonator group (CRG) and a rotating parabolic reflector (RPR) is designed. It works in the X-band with the bandwidth of 140 MHz, and its efficiency is greater than 90$\%$. Amplitude and phase of each PSOAM beam generated by this antenna can be controlled independently owing to its feed network and separate resonators design, hence any target pattern in azimuthal domain can be approximately reconfigured by modes weighting. The simulation and experiment results show that this antenna can make the PSOAM based pattern configuration possible, which will have potential in the OAM based applications.

Electrical detection of magnon-photon interaction via auxiliary spin wave mode

We report on the electrical detection of a hybrid magnon-photon system, which is comprised of a magnetic sample coupled to a planar cavity. While the uniform Kittel mode has the largest coupling strength among all the magnon modes, it only generates a modest voltage signal by means of inverse spin-Hall effect. We have found that the generated voltage can be significantly enhanced by introducing a higher order magnon mode, which possesses a much higher spin pumping efficiency and furthermore, it is nearly degenerated with the Kittel mode. The experimental results can be explained by our theoretical model, and suggest that the use of an auxiliary magnon mode can realize the configuration of a magnon-photon system with both strong coupling and large spin current.

OAM Mode-Group Generation Method: Partial Arc Transmitting Scheme

A partial slotted curved waveguide leaky-wave antenna which can generate orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-groups (MG) with high equivalent OAM order negative and positive 40 at 60 GHz is proposed in this paper. The proposed antenna with partial slotting is designed according to the circular traveling-wave antenna which can generate single conventional OAM wave, so it can be regarded as partial arc transmitting (PAT) scheme compared with the full 2pi aperture slotting of the circular traveling-wave antenna. The full-wave simulation results show that the generated OAM MGs present a high gain beam with a helical phase distribution. This method may lead to novel applications for next generation communication and radar system.

A Dynamic Motion Planning Framework for Autonomous Driving in Urban Environments

Abstract: we present a framework for robust autonomous driving motion planning system in urban environments which includes trajectory refinement, trajectory interpolation, avoidance of static and dynamic obstacles, and trajectory tracking. Given road centerline, our approach smoother the original line via cubic spline. Fifth order Bezier curve is then used to generate more human-like trajectories that guarantee at least second order continuity and curvature continuity. Dynamic trajectory planning task is decoupled into lateral spatial and longitudinal velocity planning problems. A bunch of candidate trajectory sets are generated and evaluated by an object function which considers kinematic feasibility, trajectory smoothness, driving comfort and collision-checking. Meanwhile, an LQG controller is used to generate longitudinal velocity profile to ensure safety and comfort. After that, spatial and velocity profiles are transformed into commands executed by lateral steering and longitudinal acceleration controllers. This framework is validated within a simulation study and has been deployed on our autonomous vehicle shown in Fig.1 that has travelled thousands of miles in urban environments.

Cavity mediated dissipative coupling of distant magnetic moments: theory and experiment

We investigate long-range coherent and dissipative coupling between two spatially separated magnets while both are coupled to a microwave cavity. A careful examination of the system shows that the indirect interaction between two magnon modes is dependent on their individual mechanisms of direct coupling to the cavity. If both magnon modes share the same form of coupling to the cavity (either coherent or dissipative), then the indirect coupling between them will produce level repulsion. Conversely, if the magnon modes have different forms of coupling to the cavity (one coherent and one dissipative), then their indirect coupling will produce level attraction. We further demonstrate the cavity-mediate nature of the indirect interaction through investigating the dependence of the indirect coupling strength on the frequency detuning between the magnon and cavity modes. Our work theoretically and experimentally explores indirect cavity mediate interactions in systems exhibiting both coherent and dissipative coupling, which opens a new avenue for controlling and utilizing light-matter interactions.

Variational Representation Learning for Vehicle Re-Identification

Vehicle Re-identification is attracting more and more attention in recent years. One of the most challenging problems is to learn an efficient representation for a vehicle from its multi-viewpoint images. Existing methods tend to derive features of dimensions ranging from thousands to tens of thousands. In this work we proposed a deep learning based framework that can lead to an efficient representation of vehicles. While the dimension of the learned features can be as low as 256, experiments on different datasets show that the Top-1 and Top-5 retrieval accuracies exceed multiple state-of-the-art methods. The key to our framework is two-fold. Firstly, variational feature learning is employed to generate variational features which are more discriminating. Secondly, long short-term memory (LSTM) is used to learn the relationship among different viewpoints of a vehicle. The LSTM also plays as an encoder to downsize the features.

Nodeless bulk superconductivity in the time-reversal symmetry breaking Bi/Ni bilayer system

Epitaxial bilayer films of Bi(110) and Ni host a time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking superconducting order with an unexpectedly high transition temperature $T_c = 4.1$ K. Using time-domain THz spectroscopy, we measure the low energy electrodynamic response of a Bi/Ni bilayer thin film from $0.2$ THz to $2$ THz as a function of temperature and magnetic field. We analyze the data in the context of a BCS-like superconductor with a finite normal-state scattering rate. In zero magnetic field, all states in the film become fully gapped, providing important constraints into possible pairing symmetries. Our data appears to rule out the odd-frequency pairing that is natural for many ferromagnetic-superconductor interfaces. By analyzing the magnetic field-dependent response in terms of a pair-breaking parameter, we determine that superconductivity develops over the entire bilayer sample which may point to the $p$-wave like nature of unconventional superconductivity.

Antiferromagnetic anisotropy determination by spin Hall magnetoresistance

An electric method for measuring magnetic anisotropy in antiferromagnetic insulators (AFIs) is proposed. When a metallic film with strong spin-orbit interactions, e.g., platinum (Pt), is deposited on an AFI, its resistance should be affected by the direction of the AFI N eel vector due to the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR). Accordingly, the direction of the AFI N eel vector, which is affected by both the external magnetic field and the magnetic anisotropy, is reflected in resistance of Pt. The magnetic field angle dependence of the resistance of Pt on AFI is calculated by consider- ing the SMR, which indicates that the antiferromagnetic anisotropy can be obtained experimentally by monitoring the Pt resistance in strong magnetic fields. Calculations are performed for realistic systems such as Pt/Cr2O3, Pt/NiO, and Pt/CoO.

Time-Reversal-Symmetry-Breaking Superconductivity in Epitaxial Bismuth/Nickel Bilayers

Superconductivity that spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry (TRS) has been found, so far, only in a handful of 3D crystals with bulk inversion symmetry. Here we report an observation of spontaneous TRS breaking in a 2D superconducting system without inversion symmetry: the epitaxial bilayer films of bismuth and nickel. The evidence comes from the onset of the polar Kerr effect at the superconducting transition in the absence of an external magnetic field, detected by the ultrasensitive loop-less fiber-optic Sagnac interferometer. Because of strong spin-orbit interaction and lack of inversion symmetry in a Bi/Ni bilayer, superconducting pairing cannot be classified as singlet or triplet. We propose a theoretical model where magnetic fluctuations in Ni induce superconducting pairing of the dxy = +- idx^2y^2 orbital symmetry between the electrons in Bi. In this model the order parameter spontaneously breaks the TRS and has a non-zero phase winding number around the Fermi surface, thus making it a rare example of a 2D topological superconductor.

Observation of Anomalous Magnetic Moments in Superconducting Bi/Ni Bilayer

There have been continuous efforts in searching for unconventional superconductivity over the past five decades. Compared to the well-established d-wave superconductivity in cuprates, the existence of superconductivity with other high-angular-momentum pairing symmetries is less conclusive. Bi/Ni epitaxial bilayer is a potential unconventional superconductor with broken time reversal symmetry (TRS), for that it demonstrates superconductivity and ferromagnetism simultaneously at low temperatures. We employ a specially designed superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) to detect, on the Bi/Ni bilayer, the orbital magnetic moment which is expected if the TRS is broken. An anomalous hysteretic magnetic response has been observed in the superconducting state, providing the evidence for the existence of chiral superconducting domains in the material.

Local topological charge analysis of electromagnetic vortex beam based on empirical mode decomposition

The topological charge of an electromagnetic vortex beam depends on its wavefront helicity. For mixed vortex beams composed of several different coaxial vortices, the topological charge spectrum can be obtained by Fourier transform. However, the vortex beam is generally divergent and imperfect. It makes it significant to investigate the local topological charges, especially in radio frequency regime. Fourier transform based methods are restrained by the uncertainty principle and cannot achieve high angular resolution and mode resolution simultaneously. In this letter, an analysis method for local topological charges of vortex beams is presented based on the empirical mode decomposition (EMD). From EMD, the intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) can be obtained to construct the bases of the electromagnetic wave, and each local topological charge can be respectively defined. With this method the local value achieves both high resolution of azimuth angle and topological charge, meanwhile the amplitudes of each OAM modes are presented as well. The simulation and experimental results confirm the validity of the EMD based method.

Unconventional interfacial superconductivity in epitaxial Bi/Ni heterostructures

Superconductivity (SC) is one of the most intriguing physical phenomena in nature. Nucleation of SC has long been considered highly unfavorable if not impossible near ferromagnetism, in low dimensionality and, above all, out of non-superconductor. Here we report observation of SC with TC near 4 K in Ni/Bi bilayers that defies all known paradigms of superconductivity, where neither ferromagnetic Ni film nor rhombohedra Bi film is superconducting in isolation. This highly unusual SC is independent of the growth order (Ni/Bi or Bi/Ni), but highly sensitive to the constituent layer thicknesses. Most importantly, the SC, distinctively non-s pairing, is triggered from, but does not occur at, the Bi/Ni interface. Using point contact Andreev reflection, we show evidences that the unique SC, naturally compatible with magnetism, is triplet p-wave pairing. This new revelation may lead to unconventional avenues to explore novel SC for applications in superconducting spintronics.

Multivariable Scaling for the Anomalous Hall Effect

We derive a general scaling relation for the anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnetic metals involving multiple competing scattering mechanisms, described by a quadratic hypersurface in the space spanned by the partial resistivities. We also present experimental findings, which show strong deviation from previously found scaling forms when different scattering mechanism compete in strength but can be nicely explained by our theory.

Gate-tunable Topological Valley Transport in Bilayer Graphene

Valley pseudospin, the quantum degree of freedom characterizing the degenerate valleys in energy bands, is a distinct feature of two-dimensional Dirac materials. Similar to spin, the valley pseudospin is spanned by a time reversal pair of states, though the two valley pseudospin states transform to each other under spatial inversion. The breaking of inversion symmetry induces various valley-contrasted physical properties; for instance, valley-dependent topological transport is of both scientific and technological interests. Bilayer graphene (BLG) is a unique system whose intrinsic inversion symmetry can be controllably broken by a perpendicular electric field, offering a rare possibility for continuously tunable valley-topological transport. Here, we used a perpendicular gate electric field to break the inversion symmetry in BLG, and a giant nonlocal response was observed as a result of the topological transport of the valley pseudospin. We further showed that the valley transport is fully tunable by external gates, and that the nonlocal signal persists up to room temperature and over long distances. These observations challenge contemporary understanding of topological transport in a gapped system, and the robust topological transport may lead to future valleytronic applications.

Evidence of the side jump mechanism in the anomalous Hall effect in paramagnets

Persistent confusion has existed between the intrinsic (Berry curvature) and the side jump mechanisms of anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in ferromagnets. We provide unambiguous identification of the side jump mechanism, in addition to the skew scattering contribution in epitaxial paramagnetic Ni$_{34}$Cu$_{66}$ thin films, in which the intrinsic contribution is by definition excluded. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the AHE further reveals that the side jump mechanism is dominated by the elastic scattering.

The emergence of topologically protected surface states in epitaxial Bi(111) thin films

Quantum transport measurements including the Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak (AAS) and Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effects, universal conductance fluctuations (UCF), and weak anti-localization (WAL) have been carried out on epitaxial Bi thin films ($10-70$ bilayers) on Si(111). The results show that while the film interior is insulating all six surfaces of the Bi thin films are robustly metallic. We propose that these properties are the manifestation of a novel phenomenon, namely, a topologically trivial bulk system can become topologically non-trivial when it is made into a thin film. We stress that what's observed here is entirely different from the predicted 2D topological insulating state in a single bilayer Bi where only the four side surfaces should possess topologically protected gapless states.

Bi(111) thin film with insulating interior but metallic surfaces

The electrical conductance of molecular beam epitaxial Bi on BaF2(111) was measured as a function of both film thickness (4-540 nm) and temperature (5-300 K). Unlike bulk Bi as a prototype semimetal, the Bi thin films up to 90 nm are found to be insulating in the interiors but metallic on the surfaces. This result has not only resolved unambiguously the long controversy about the existence of semimetal-semiconductor transition in Bi thin film but also provided a straightforward interpretation for the long-puzzled temperature dependence of the resistivity of Bi thin films, which in turn might suggest some potential applications in spintronics.
