Further results on some classes of permutation polynomials over finite fields

Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ denote the finite fields with $q$ elements. The permutation behavior of several classes of infinite families of permutation polynomials over finite fields have been studied in recent years. In this paper, we continue with their studies, and get some further results about the permutation properties of the permutation polynomials. Also, some new classes of permutation polynomials are constructed. For these, we alter the coefficients, exponents or the underlying fields, etc.

Steel-Based Electrocatalysts for Efficient and Durable Oxygen Evolution in Acidic Media

High overpotentials, particularly an issue of common anode materials, hamper the process of water electrolysis for clean energy generation. Thanks to immense research efforts up to date oxygen evolution electrocatalysts based on earth-abundant elements work efficiently and stably in neutral and alkaline regimes. However, non-noble metal-based anode materials that can withstand low pH regimes are considered to be an indispensable prerequisite for the water splitting to succeed in the future. All oxygen evolving electrodes working durably and actively in acids contain Ir at least as an additive. Due to its scarcity and high acquisition costs noble elements like Pt, Ru and Ir need to be replaced by earth abundant elements. We have evaluated a Ni containing stainless steel for use as an oxygen-forming electrode in diluted H2SO4. Unmodified Ni42 steel showed a significant weight loss after long term OER polarization experiments. Moreover, a substantial loss of the OER performance of the untreated steel specimen seen in linear sweep voltammetry measurements turned out to be a serious issue. However, upon anodization in LiOH, Ni42 alloy was rendered in OER electrocatalysts that exhibit under optimized synthesis conditions stable overpotentials down to 445 mV for 10 mA cm-2 current density at pH 0. Even more important: The resulting material has proven to be robust upon long-term usage (weight loss: 20 mug/mm2 after 50 ks of chronopotentiometry at pH 1) towards OER in H2SO4. Our results suggest that electrochemical oxidation of Ni42 steel in LiOH (sample Ni42Li205) results in the formation of a metal oxide containing outer zone that supports solution route-based oxygen evolution in acidic regime accompanied by a good stability of the catalyst.

On the $A_α$-characteristic polynomial of a graph

Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices, and let $A(G)$ and $D(G)$ denote respectively the adjacency matrix and the degree matrix of $G$. Define $$ A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G) $$ for any real $α\in [0,1]$. The $A_α$-characteristic polynomial of $G$ is defined to be $$ \det(xI_n-A_α(G))=\sum_jc_{αj}(G)x^{n-j}, $$ where $\det(*)$ denotes the determinant of $*$, and $I_n$ is the identity matrix of size $n$. The $A_α$-spectrum of $G$ consists of all roots of the $A_α$-characteristic polynomial of $G$. A graph $G$ is said to be determined by its $A_α$-spectrum if all graphs having the same $A_α$-spectrum as $G$ are isomorphic to $G$. In this paper, we first formulate the first four coefficients $c_{α0}(G)$, $c_{α1}(G)$, $c_{α2}(G)$ and $c_{α3}(G)$ of the $A_α$-characteristic polynomial of $G$. And then, we observe that $A_α$-spectra are much efficient for us to distinguish graphs, by enumerating the $A_α$-characteristic polynomials for all graphs on at most 10 vertices. To verify this observation, we characterize some graphs determined by their $A_α$-spectra.

Extremality of graph entropy based on degrees of uniform hypergraphs with few edges

Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a hypergraph with $n$ vertices. Suppose that $d_1,d_2,\ldots,d_n$ are degrees of the vertices of $\mathcal{H}$. The $t$-th graph entropy based on degrees of $\mathcal{H}$ is defined as $$ I_d^t(\mathcal{H}) =-\sum_{i=1}^{n}\left(\frac{d_i^{t}}{\sum_{j=1}^{n}d_j^{t}}\log\frac{d_i^{t}}{\sum_{j=1}^{n}d_j^{t}}\right) =\log\left(\sum_{i=1}^{n}d_i^{t}\right)-\sum_{i=1}^{n}\left(\frac{d_i^{t}}{\sum_{j=1}^{n}d_j^{t}}\log d_i^{t}\right), $$ where $t$ is a real number and the logarithm is taken to the base two. In this paper we obtain upper and lower bounds of $I_d^t(\mathcal{H})$ for $t=1$, when $\mathcal{H}$ is among all uniform supertrees, unicyclic uniform hypergraphs and bicyclic uniform hypergraphs, respectively.

Graphs determined by their $A_α$-spectra

Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices, and let $A(G)$ and $D(G)$ denote respectively the adjacency matrix and the degree matrix of $G$. Define $$ A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G) $$ for any real $α\in [0,1]$. The collection of eigenvalues of $A_α(G)$ together with multiplicities are called the \emph{$A_α$-spectrum} of $G$. A graph $G$ is said to be \emph{determined by its $A_α$-spectrum} if all graphs having the same $A_α$-spectrum as $G$ are isomorphic to $G$. We first prove that some graphs are determined by its $A_α$-spectrum for $0\leqα<1$, including the complete graph $K_m$, the star $K_{1,n-1}$, the path $P_n$, the union of cycles and the complement of the union of cycles, the union of $K_2$ and $K_1$ and the complement of the union of $K_2$ and $K_1$, and the complement of $P_n$. Setting $α=0$ or $\frac{1}{2}$, those graphs are determined by $A$- or $Q$-spectra. Secondly, when $G$ is regular, we show that $G$ is determined by its $A_α$-spectrum if and only if the join $G\vee K_m$ is determined by its $A_α$-spectrum for $\frac{1}{2}<α<1$. Furthermore, we also show that the join $K_m\vee P_n$ is determined by its $A_α$-spectrum for $\frac{1}{2}<α<1$. In the end, we pose some related open problems for future study.

Spectra of subdivision-vertex join and subdivision-edge join of two graphs

The subdivision graph $\mathcal{S}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the graph obtained by inserting a new vertex into every edge of $G$. Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be two vertex disjoint graphs. The \emph{subdivision-vertex join} of $G_1$ and $G_2$, denoted by $G_1\dot{\vee}G_2$, is the graph obtained from $\mathcal{S}(G_1)$ and $G_2$ by joining every vertex of $V(G_1)$ with every vertex of $V(G_2)$. The \emph{subdivision-edge join} of $G_1$ and $G_2$, denoted by $G_1\underline{\vee}G_2$, is the graph obtained from $\mathcal{S}(G_1)$ and $G_2$ by joining every vertex of $I(G_1)$ with every vertex of $V(G_2)$, where $I(G_1)$ is the set of inserted vertices of $\mathcal{S}(G_1)$. In this paper we determine the adjacency spectra, the Laplacian spectra and the signless Laplacian spectra of $G_1\dot{\vee}G_2$ (respectively, $G_1\underline{\vee}G_2$) for a regular graph $G_1$ and an arbitrary graph $G_2$, in terms of the corresponding spectra of $G_1$ and $G_2$. As applications, these results enable us to construct infinitely many pairs of cospectral graphs. We also give the number of the spanning trees and the Kirchhoff index of $G_1\dot{\vee}G_2$ (respectively, $G_1\underline{\vee}G_2$) for a regular graph $G_1$ and an arbitrary graph $G_2$.

Quadratic unitary Cayley graphs of finite commutative rings

The purpose of this paper is to study spectral properties of a family of Cayley graphs on finite commutative rings. Let $R$ be such a ring and $R^\times$ its set of units. Let $Q_R=\{u^2: u\in R^\times\}$ and $T_R=Q_R\cup(-Q_R)$. We define the quadratic unitary Cayley graph of $R$, denoted by $\mathcal{G}_R$, to be the Cayley graph on the additive group of $R$ with respect to $T_R$; that is, $\mathcal{G}_R$ has vertex set $R$ such that $x, y \in R$ are adjacent if and only if $x-y\in T_R$. It is well known that any finite commutative ring $R$ can be decomposed as $R=R_1\times R_2\times\cdots\times R_s$, where each $R_i$ is a local ring with maximal ideal $M_i$. Let $R_0$ be a local ring with maximal ideal $M_0$ such that $|R_0|/|M_0| \equiv 3\,(\mod\,4)$. We determine the spectra of $\mathcal{G}_R$ and $\mathcal{G}_{R_0\times R}$ under the condition that $|R_i|/|M_i|\equiv 1\,(\mod\,4)$ for $1 \le i \le s$. We compute the energies and spectral moments of such quadratic unitary Cayley graphs, and determine when such a graph is hyperenergetic or Ramanujan.

Laplacian spectral characterization of dumbbell graphs and theta graphs

Let $P_n$ and $C_n$ denote the path and cycle on $n$ vertices respectively. The dumbbell graph, denoted by $D_{p,k,q}$, is the graph obtained from two cycles $C_p$, $C_q$ and a path $P_{k+2}$ by identifying each pendant vertex of $P_{k+2}$ with a vertex of a cycle respectively. The theta graph, denoted by $Θ_{r,s,t}$, is the graph formed by joining two given vertices via three disjoint paths $P_{r}$, $P_{s}$ and $P_{t}$ respectively. In this paper, we prove that all dumbbell graphs as well as theta graphs are determined by their Laplacian spectra.

Spectral characterizations of propeller graphs

A propeller graph is obtained from an $\infty$-graph by attaching a path to the vertex of degree four, where an $\infty$-graph consists of two cycles with precisely one common vertex. In this paper, we prove that all propeller graphs are determined by their Laplacian spectra as well as their signless Laplacian spectra.

Laplacian spectral characterization of some double starlike trees

A tree is called double starlike if it has exactly two vertices of degree greater than two. Let $H(p,n,q)$ denote the double starlike tree obtained by attaching $p$ pendant vertices to one pendant vertex of the path $P_n$ and $q$ pendant vertices to the other pendant vertex of $P_n$. In this paper, we prove that $H(p,n,q)$ is determined by its Laplacian spectrum.

A note on the five valued conjectures of Johansen and Helleseth and zeta functions

For the complete five-valued cross-correlation distribution between two $m$-sequences ${s_t}$ and ${s_{dt}}$ of period $2^m-1$ that differ by the decimation $d={{2^{2k}+1}\over {2^k+1}}$ where $m$ is odd and $\mbox{gcd}(k,m)=1$, Johansen and Hellseth expressed it in terms of some exponential sums. And two conjectures are presented that are of interest in their own right. In this correspondence we study these conjectures for the particular case where $k=3$, and the cases $k=1,2$ can also be analyzed in a similar process. When $k>3$, the degrees of the relevant polynomials will become higher. Here the multiplicity of the biggest absolute value of the cross-correlation is no more than one-sixth of the multiplicity corresponding the smallest absolute value.

The Weight Distributions of a Class of Cyclic Codes with Three Nonzeros over F3

Cyclic codes have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. The decoding error probability and the undetected error probability are usually bounded by or given from the weight distributions of the codes. Most researches are about the determination of the weight distributions of cyclic codes with few nonzeros, by using quadratic form and exponential sum but limited to low moments. In this paper, we focus on the application of higher moments of the exponential sum to determine the weight distributions of a class of ternary cyclic codes with three nonzeros, combining with not only quadratic form but also MacWilliams' identities. Another application of this paper is to emphasize the computer algebra system Magma for the investigation of the higher moments. In the end, the result is verified by one example using Matlab.

On the bounds and achievability about the ODPC of $\mathcal{GRM}(2,m)^*$ over prime field for increasing message length

The optimum distance profiles of linear block codes were studied for increasing or decreasing message length while keeping the minimum distances as large as possible, especially for Golay codes and the second-order Reed-Muller codes, etc. Cyclic codes have more efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In this paper, we investigate the optimum distance profiles with respect to the cyclic subcode chains (ODPCs) of the punctured generalized second-order Reed-Muller codes $\mathcal{GRM}(2,m)^*$ which were applied in Power Control in OFDM Modulations in channels with synchronization, and so on. For this, two standards are considered in the inverse dictionary order, i.e., for increasing message length. Four lower bounds and upper bounds on ODPC are presented, where the lower bounds almost achieve the corresponding upper bounds in some sense. The discussions are over nonbinary prime field.

On the Optimum Cyclic Subcode Chains of $\mathcal{RM}(2,m)^*$ for Increasing Message Length

The distance profiles of linear block codes can be employed to design variational coding scheme for encoding message with variational length and getting lower decoding error probability by large minimum Hamming distance. %, e.g. the design of TFCI in CDMA and the researches on the second-order Reed-Muller code $\mathcal{RM}(2,m)$, etc. Considering convenience for encoding, we focus on the distance profiles with respect to cyclic subcode chains (DPCs) of cyclic codes over $GF(q)$ with length $n$ such that $\mbox{gcd}(n,q) = 1$. In this paper the optimum DPCs and the corresponding optimum cyclic subcode chains are investigated on the punctured second-order Reed-Muller code $\mathcal{RM}(2,m)^*$ for increasing message length, where two standards on the optimums are studied according to the rhythm of increase.

Spectra of the neighbourhood corona of two graphs

Given simple graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, the neighbourhood corona of $G_1$ and $G_2$, denoted $G_1\star G_2$, is the graph obtained by taking one copy of $G_1$ and $|V(G_1)|$ copies of $G_2$, and joining the neighbours of the $i$th vertex of $G_1$ to every vertex in the $i$th copy of $G_2$. In this paper we determine the adjacency spectrum of $G_1 \star G_2$ for arbitrary $G_1$ and $G_2$, and the Laplacian spectrum and signless Laplacian spectrum of $G_1\star G_2$ for regular $G_1$ and arbitrary $G_2$, in terms of the corresponding spectrum of $G_1$ and $G_2$. The results on the adjacency and signless Laplacian spectra enable us to construct new pairs of adjacency cospectral and signless Laplacian cospectral graphs. As applications of the results on the Laplacian spectra, we give constructions of new families of expander graphs from known ones by using neighbourhood coronae.

The weight distributions of some cyclic codes with three or four nonzeros over F3

Because of efficient encoding and decoding algorithms, cyclic codes are an important family of linear block codes, and have applications in communica- tion and storage systems. However, their weight distributions are known only for a few cases mainly on the codes with one or two nonzeros. In this paper, the weight distributions of two classes of cyclic codes with three or four nonzeros are determined.
