P-orbital spin generator with large spin Hall angle and long spin diffusion length

High density data storage and spin-logic devices require highly efficient all-electric control of spin moments. So far, charge-to-spin conversion through the spin Hall effect (SHE) highly limits to d-orbital materials associated with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC), especially heavy metals. However, d-orbital heavy metals with strong SOC results in a short spin diffusion length, which restricts the spin transport and accumulation in spintronic devices. Therefore, it is urgent to discovery new SHE materials with both large spin Hall conductivity and high spin transport ability beyond d-orbital materials. Here, we experimentally report a large charge to spin conversion in a p-orbital In2Bi alloy, exhibiting the coexistence of a large spin Hall angle and a long spin diffusion length (4 times that of Pt). Our first-principles calculations reveal that small gap openings near the Fermi level lead to large Berry curvature-related spin Hall conductivity. Due to the delocalized nature of p-orbitals of In2Bi, its spin current can overcome the physical barriers between spin Hall angle and spin diffusion length in d-orbital metals, thereby advancing the development of high performance spintronic devices.

Inverse orbital Hall effect and orbitronic terahertz emission observed in the materials with weak spin-orbit coupling

The Orbital Hall effect, which originates from materials with weak spin-orbit coupling, has attracted considerable interest for spin-orbitronic applications. Here, we demonstrate the inverse effect of the orbital Hall effect and observe orbitronic terahertz emission in the Ti and Mn materials. Through spin-orbit transition in the ferromagnetic layer, the generated orbital current can be converted to charge current in the Ti and Mn layers via the inverse orbital Hall effect. Furthermore, the inserted W layer provides an additional conversion of the orbital-charge current in the Ti and Mn layers, significantly enhancing the orbitronic terahertz emission. Moreover, the orbitronic terahertz emission can be manipulated by cooperating with the inverse orbital Hall effect and the inverse spin Hall effect in the different sample configurations. Our results not only discover the physical mechanism of condensed matter physics but also pave the way for designing promising spin-orbitronic devices and terahertz emitters.

Non-Equilibrium Spark Plasma Reactive Doping Enables Highly Adjustable Metal to Insulator Transitions and Improved Mechanical Stability for VO2

Although vanadium dioxide (VO2) exhibits the most abrupt metal to insulator transition (MIT) properties near room-temperature, the present regulation of their MIT functionalities is insufficient owing to the high complexity and susception associated with V4+. Herein, we demonstrate a spark plasma assisted reactive sintering (SPARS) approach to simultaneously achieve in situ doping and sintering of VO2 within largely short period (~10 minutes). This enables high convenience and flexibility in regulating the electronic structure of VO2 via dopant elements covering Ti, W, Nb, Mo, Cr and Fe, leading to a wide adjustment in their metal to insulator transition temperature (TMIT) and basic resistivity. Furthermore, the mechanical strengths of the doped-VO2 were meanwhile largely improved via the compositing effect of high melting-point dopant oxide. The high adjustability in MIT properties and improved mechanical properties further paves the way towards practical applications of VO2 in power electronics, thermochromism and infrared camouflage.

Structure dependent and strain tunable magnetic ordering in ultrathin chromium telluride

Two-dimensional (2D) chromium tellurides have attracted considerable research interest for their high Curie temperatures. Their magnetic properties have been found diverse in various experiments, the understanding of which however remains limited. In this work, we report that the magnetic ordering of ultrathin chromium tellurides is structure dependent and can be tuned by external strain. Based on first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, we show long-range stable magnetism with high and low Curie temperature, and short-range magnetism in 2D Cr5Te8, CrTe2, and Cr2Te3 layers, respectively. We further find that ferromagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic transition can be realized by 2% compressive strain for CrTe2 and 2% tensile strain for Cr2Te3, and their magnetic easy axis is tuned from out-of-plane to in-plane by the medium tensile and compressive strain. This strain dependent magnetic coupling is found to be related to Cr-Cr direct exchange and the change of magnetic anisotropy is understood by the atom and orbital resolved magnetic anisotropy energy and second order perturbation theory. Our results reveal the important roles of the structure and strain in determining the magnetic ordering in 2D chromium telluride, shedding light on understanding of the diverse magnetic properties observed in experiments.

Unconventional charge-spin conversion in Weyl-semimetal WTe2

An outstanding feature of topological quantum materials is their novel spin topology in the electronic band structures with an expected large charge-to-spin conversion efficiency. Here, we report a charge current-induced spin polarization in the type-II Weyl semimetal candidate WTe2 and efficient spin injection and detection in a graphene channel up to room temperature. Contrary to the conventional spin Hall and Rashba-Edelstein effects, our measurements indicate an unconventional charge-to-spin conversion in WTe2, which is primarily forbidden by the crystal symmetry of the system. Such a large spin polarization can be possible in WTe2 due to a reduced crystal symmetry combined with its large spin Berry curvature, spin-orbit interaction with a novel spin-texture of the Fermi states. We demonstrate a robust and practical method for electrical creation and detection of such a spin polarization using both charge-to-spin conversion and its inverse phenomenon and utilized it for efficient spin injection and detection in a graphene channel up to room temperature. These findings open opportunities for utilizing topological Weyl materials as non-magnetic spin sources in allelectrical van der Waals spintronic circuits and for low-power and high-performance non-volatile spintronic technologies.

Perpendicularly magnetized YIG films with small Gilbert damping constant and anomalous spin transport properties

The Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) have recently attracted a great deal of attention for spintronics applications. Here, we report the induced PMA in the ultrathin YIG films grown on (Gd2.6Ca0.4)(Ga4.1Mg0.25Zr0.65)O12 (SGGG) substrates by epitaxial strain without preprocessing. Reciprocal space mapping shows that the films are lattice-matched to the substrates without strain relaxation. Through ferromagnetic resonance and polarized neutron reflectometry measurements, we find that these YIG films have ultra-low Gilbert damping constant with a magnetic dead layer as thin as about 0.3 nm at the YIG/SGGG interfaces. Moreover, the transport behavior of the Pt/YIG/SGGG films reveals an enhancement of spin mixing conductance and a large non-monotonic magnetic field dependence of anomalous Hall effect as compared with the Pt/YIG/Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG) films. The non-monotonic anomalous Hall signal is extracted in the temperature range from 150 to 350 K, which has been ascribed to the possible non-collinear magnetic order at the Pt/YIG interface induced by uniaxial strain.

Observation of Spin Hall Effect in Weyl Semimetal WTe2 at Room Temperature

Discovery of topological Weyl semimetals has revealed the opportunities to realize several extraordinary physical phenomena in condensed matter physics. Specifically, these semimetals with strong spin-orbit coupling, broken inversion symmetry and novel spin texture are predicted to exhibit a large spin Hall effect that can efficiently convert the charge current to a spin current. Here we report the direct experimental observation of a large spin Hall and inverse spin Hall effects in Weyl semimetal WTe2 at room temperature obeying Onsager reciprocity relation. We demonstrate the detection of the pure spin current generated by spin Hall phenomenon in WTe2 by making van der Waals heterostructures with graphene, taking advantage of its long spin coherence length and spin transmission at the heterostructure interface. These experimental findings well supported by ab initio calculations show a large charge-spin conversion efficiency in WTe2; which can pave the way for utilization of spin-orbit induced phenomena in spintronic memory and logic circuit architectures.

Interface-driven unusual anomalous Hall effect in MnxGa/Pt bilayers: No correlation with chiral spin structures

The effects of spin-orbit coupling and symmetry breaking at the interface between a ferromagnet and heavy metal are particularly important for spin-based information storage and computation. Recent discoveries suggest they can create chiral spin structures (e.g. skyrmions), which have often been identified through the appearance of the bump/dip features of Hall signals, the so-called topological Hall effect (THE). In this work, however, we have present an unusual anomalous Hall effect (UAHE) in MnxGa/Pt bilayers and demonstrated that the features extremely similar to THE can be generated without involving any chiral spin structures. The low temperature magnetic force microscopy has been used to explore the magnetic field-dependent behavior of spin structures, and the UAHE as a function of magnetic field does not peak near the maximal density of magnetic bubbles. The results unambiguously evidence that the UAHE in MnxGa/Pt bilayers shows no correlation with chiral spin structures but is driven by the modified interfacial properties. The bump/dip features of Hall signals cannot be taken as an unambiguous signature for the emergence of chiral spin structures, and a wealth of underlying and interesting physics need explored.

Fe3O4@astragalus polysaccharide core-shell nanoparticles for iron deficiency anemia therapy and magnetic resonance imaging in vivo

Fe3O4@astragalus polysaccharide core-shell nanoparticles (Fe3O4@APS NPs) were demonstrated to be an efficient therapeutic drug for treating iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in vivo. The Fe3O4@APS NPs have been synthesized using a two steps approach involving hydrothermal synthesis and subsequent esterification. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy studies show that APS are attached on the surfaces of the highly monodisperse Fe3O4 NPs. Dynamic light scatting (DLS) and magnetic characterizations reveal that the Fe3O4@APS NPs have outstanding water solubility and stability. Cytotoxicity assessment using Hela cells and pathological tests in mice demonstrate their good biocompatibility and low toxicity. The IDA treatment in rats shows that they have efficient therapeutic effect, which is contributed to both the iron element supplement from Fe3O4 and the APS-stimulated hematopoietic cell generation. Moreover, the Fe3O4@APS NPs are superparamagnetic and thus able to be used for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This study has demonstrated the potential of nanocomposites involving purified natural products from Chinese herb medicine for biomedical applications.

The dominancy of damping like torque for the current induced magnetization switching in Pt/Co/W multilayers

Two classes of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) mechanisms have been considered as candidate sources for the spin orbit torque (SOT): the spin Hall Effect (SHE) in heavy metals with strong SOC and the Rashba effect arising from broken inversion symmetry at material surfaces and interfaces. In this work, we have investigated the SOT in perpendicularly magnetized Pt/Co/W films, which is compared with the results in Pt/Co/AlOx films. Theoretically, in the case of the asymmetric structure of trilayers with opposite sign of spin Hall angle, both damping like torque and field like torque due to the SHE and the Rashba effect will be enhanced. Using the harmonic measurements, we have characterized the effective fields corresponding to the damping like torque and the field like torque, but we have found the dominancy of damping like torque in the Pt/Co/W films. It is much different from the results in the Pt/Co/AlOx films, in which both the damping like torque and the field like torque are strong.

Robust formation of topological Hall effect in MnGa/heavy metal bilayers

We have investigated the topological Hall effect (THE) in MnGa/Pt and MnGa/Ta bilayers induced by interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). The most evident THE signals have been found based on the MnGa films with small critical DMI energy constant Dc. The large topological portion of the Hall signal from the total Hall signal has been extracted in the whole temperature range from 5 to 300 K. These results open up the exploration of the DMI induced magnetic behavior based on the bulk perpendicular magnetic anisotropy materials for fundamental physics and magnetic storage technologies.

Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of full-Heusler films in Pt/Co2FeAl/MgO trilayers

We report on perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in a Pt/Co2FeAl/MgO sandwiched structure with a thick Co2FeAl layer of 2-2.5 nm. The PMA is thermally stable that the anisotropy energy density Ku is 1.3{\times}106 erg/cm3 for the structure with 2 nm Co2FeAl after annealing at 350 oC. The thicknesses of Co2FeAl and MgO layers greatly affect the PMA. Our results provide an effective way to realize relative thick perpendicularly magnetized Heusler alloy films.
