Compact Visual Data Representation for Green Multimedia -- A Human Visual System Perspective

The Human Visual System (HVS), with its intricate sophistication, is capable of achieving ultra-compact information compression for visual signals. This remarkable ability is coupled with high generalization capability and energy efficiency. By contrast, the state-of-the-art Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard achieves a compression ratio of around 1,000 times for raw visual data. This notable disparity motivates the research community to draw inspiration to effectively handle the immense volume of visual data in a green way. Therefore, this paper provides a survey of how visual data can be efficiently represented for green multimedia, in particular when the ultimate task is knowledge extraction instead of visual signal reconstruction. We introduce recent research efforts that promote green, sustainable, and efficient multimedia in this field. Moreover, we discuss how the deep understanding of the HVS can benefit the research community, and envision the development of future green multimedia technologies.

Beyond Entity Alignment: Towards Complete Knowledge Graph Alignment via Entity-Relation Synergy

Knowledge Graph Alignment (KGA) aims to integrate knowledge from multiple sources to address the limitations of individual Knowledge Graphs (KGs) in terms of coverage and depth. However, current KGA models fall short in achieving a ``complete'' knowledge graph alignment. Existing models primarily emphasize the linkage of cross-graph entities but overlook aligning relations across KGs, thereby providing only a partial solution to KGA. The semantic correlations embedded in relations are largely overlooked, potentially restricting a comprehensive understanding of cross-KG signals. In this paper, we propose to conceptualize relation alignment as an independent task and conduct KGA by decomposing it into two distinct but highly correlated sub-tasks: entity alignment and relation alignment. To capture the mutually reinforcing correlations between these objectives, we propose a novel Expectation-Maximization-based model, EREM, which iteratively optimizes both sub-tasks. Experimental results on real-world datasets demonstrate that EREM consistently outperforms state-of-the-art models in both entity alignment and relation alignment tasks.

Fast Parallel Hypertree Decompositions in Logarithmic Recursion Depth

Modern trends in data collection are bringing current mainstream techniques for database query processing to their limits. Consequently, various novel approaches for efficient query processing are being actively studied. One such approach is based on hypertree decompositions (HDs), which have been shown to carry great potential to process complex queries more efficiently and with stronger theoretical guarantees. However, using HDs for query execution relies on the difficult task of computing decompositions of the query structure, which guides the efficient execution of the query. From theoretical results we know that the performance of purely sequential methods is inherently limited, yet the problem is susceptible to parallelisation. In this paper we propose the first algorithm for computing hypertree decompositions that is well-suited for parallelisation. The proposed algorithm log-k-decomp requires only a logarithmic number of recursion levels and additionally allows for highly parallelised pruning of the search space by restriction to balanced separators. We provide detailed experimental evaluation over the HyperBench benchmark and demonstrate that our approach is highly effective especially for complex queries.
