Maximum Likelihood Estimation of Optimal Receiver Operating Characteristic Curves from Likelihood Ratio Observations

The optimal receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, giving the maximum probability of detection as a function of the probability of false alarm, is a key information-theoretic indicator of the difficulty of a binary hypothesis testing problem (BHT). It is well known that the optimal ROC curve for a given BHT, corresponding to the likelihood ratio test, is determined by the probability distribution of the observed data under each of the two hypotheses. In some cases, these two distributions may be unknown or computationally intractable, but independent samples of the likelihood ratio can be observed. This raises the problem of estimating the optimal ROC for a BHT from such samples. The maximum likelihood estimator of the optimal ROC curve is derived, and it is shown to converge almost surely to the true optimal ROC curve in the \levy\ metric, as the number of observations tends to infinity. Finite sample size bounds are obtained for three other estimators: the classical empirical estimator, based on estimating the two types of error probabilities from two separate sets of samples, and two variations of the maximum likelihood estimator called the split estimator and fused estimator, respectively. The maximum likelihood estimator is observed in simulation experiments to be considerably more accurate than the empirical estimator, especially when the number of samples obtained under one of the two hypotheses is small. The area under the maximum likelihood estimator is derived; it is a consistent estimator of the area under the true optimal ROC curve.

Lower Bounds on Information Requirements for Causal Network Inference

Recovery of the causal structure of dynamic networks from noisy measurements has long been a problem of interest across many areas of science and engineering. Many algorithms have been proposed, but there is little work that compares the performance of the algorithms to converse bounds in a non-asymptotic setting. As a step to address this problem, this paper gives lower bounds on the error probability for causal network support recovery in a linear Gaussian setting. The bounds are based on Monte Carlo estimation of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves based on likelihood ratio samples assuming side information is available. The estimated ROC curves and curves obtained through the use of Bhattacharyya coefficients or Kullback--Leibler divergences are also compared.

QuickStop: A Markov Optimal Stopping Approach for Quickest Misinformation Detection

This paper combines data-driven and model-driven methods for real-time misinformation detection. Our algorithm, named QuickStop, is an optimal stopping algorithm based on a probabilistic information spreading model obtained from labeled data. The algorithm consists of an offline machine learning algorithm for learning the probabilistic information spreading model and an online optimal stopping algorithm to detect misinformation. The online detection algorithm has both low computational and memory complexities. Our numerical evaluations with a real-world dataset show that QuickStop outperforms existing misinformation detection algorithms in terms of both accuracy and detection time (number of observations needed for detection). Our evaluations with synthetic data further show that QuickStop is robust to (offline) learning errors.

The influence of magnetic field on the pion superfluidity and phase structure in the NJL model

The influence of the magnetic field on the pion superfluidity and the phase structure is analyzed in the framework of the two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio(NJL) model. To do this, we first derive the thermodynamic potential from the Lagrangian density of the NJL model in the mean field approximation. Using this thermodynamic potential, we get the gap equation of the chiral condensate and the pion condensate. The effect of external magnetic field on the pion condensate is not simple promotion or suppression, which we will discuss in detail in the paper. It is shown that the tricritical point on the pion superfluidity phase transition line moves to the space with smaller isospin chemical potential and higher temperature when the external magnetic field becomes stronger. The influence of external magnetic field on the chiral condensate is also studied.

A Strategy-Proof and Non-monetary Admission Control Mechanism for Wireless Access Networks

We study admission control mechanisms for wireless access networks where (i) each user has a minimum service requirement, (ii) the capacity of the access network is limited, and (iii) the access point is not allowed to use monetary mechanisms to guarantee that users do not lie when disclosing their minimum service requirements. To guarantee truthfulness, we use auction theory to design a mechanism where users compete to be admitted into the network. We propose admission control mechanisms under which the access point intelligently allocates resources based on the announced minimum service requirements to ensure that users have no incentive to lie and the capacity constraint is fulfilled. We also prove the properties that any feasible mechanism should have.
