Mid-infrared single photon detector with superconductor Mo$_{80}$Si$_{20}$ nanowire

A mid-infrared single photon detector (MIR-SNSPD) was reported based on 30 nm-wide superconductor molybdenum silicide nanowires in this work. Saturated quantum efficiencies (QEs) were achieved at the wavelength ranging from 1.55 to 5.07 micrometer in experiments. At the same time, the intrinsic dark count rate (DCR) was below 100 cps. Thus, this device produced a noise equivalent power (NEP) of 4.5 * 10-19 W/sqrt(Hz). The results provide the foundation of developing 10 micrometer-SNSPD for the applications of infrared astronomy observation.

Photonic flywheel in a monolithic fiber resonator

We demonstrate the first compact photonic flywheel with sub-fs time jitter (averaging times up to 10 μs) at the quantum-noise limit of a monolithic fiber resonator. Such quantum-limited performance is accessed through novel two-step pumping scheme for dissipative Kerr soliton (DKS) generation. Controllable interaction between stimulated Brillouin lasing and Kerr nonlinearity enhances the DKS coherence and mitigate the thermal instability challenge, achieving a remarkable 22-Hz intrinsic comb linewidth and an unprecedented phase noise of -180 dBc/Hz at 945 MHz carrier at free running. The scheme can be generalized to various device platforms for field-deployable precision metrology.

Variable-Viewpoint Representations for 3D Object Recognition

For the problem of 3D object recognition, researchers using deep learning methods have developed several very different input representations, including "multi-view" snapshots taken from discrete viewpoints around an object, as well as "spherical" representations consisting of a dense map of essentially ray-traced samples of the object from all directions. These representations offer trade-offs in terms of what object information is captured and to what degree of detail it is captured, but it is not clear how to measure these information trade-offs since the two types of representations are so different. We demonstrate that both types of representations in fact exist at two extremes of a common representational continuum, essentially choosing to prioritize either the number of views of an object or the pixels (i.e., field of view) allotted per view. We identify interesting intermediate representations that lie at points in between these two extremes, and we show, through systematic empirical experiments, how accuracy varies along this continuum as a function of input information as well as the particular deep learning architecture that is used.

Symbiotic Attention with Privileged Information for Egocentric Action Recognition

Egocentric video recognition is a natural testbed for diverse interaction reasoning. Due to the large action vocabulary in egocentric video datasets, recent studies usually utilize a two-branch structure for action recognition, ie, one branch for verb classification and the other branch for noun classification. However, correlation studies between the verb and the noun branches have been largely ignored. Besides, the two branches fail to exploit local features due to the absence of a position-aware attention mechanism. In this paper, we propose a novel Symbiotic Attention framework leveraging Privileged information (SAP) for egocentric video recognition. Finer position-aware object detection features can facilitate the understanding of actor's interaction with the object. We introduce these features in action recognition and regard them as privileged information. Our framework enables mutual communication among the verb branch, the noun branch, and the privileged information. This communication process not only injects local details into global features but also exploits implicit guidance about the spatio-temporal position of an on-going action. We introduce novel symbiotic attention (SA) to enable effective communication. It first normalizes the detection guided features on one branch to underline the action-relevant information from the other branch. SA adaptively enhances the interactions among the three sources. To further catalyze this communication, spatial relations are uncovered for the selection of most action-relevant information. It identifies the most valuable and discriminative feature for classification. We validate the effectiveness of our SAP quantitatively and qualitatively. Notably, it achieves the state-of-the-art on two large-scale egocentric video datasets.

Baidu-UTS Submission to the EPIC-Kitchens Action Recognition Challenge 2019

In this report, we present the Baidu-UTS submission to the EPIC-Kitchens Action Recognition Challenge in CVPR 2019. This is the winning solution to this challenge. In this task, the goal is to predict verbs, nouns, and actions from the vocabulary for each video segment. The EPIC-Kitchens dataset contains various small objects, intense motion blur, and occlusions. It is challenging to locate and recognize the object that an actor interacts with. To address these problems, we utilize object detection features to guide the training of 3D Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), which can significantly improve the accuracy of noun prediction. Specifically, we introduce a Gated Feature Aggregator module to learn from the clip feature and the object feature. This module can strengthen the interaction between the two kinds of activations and avoid gradient exploding. Experimental results demonstrate our approach outperforms other methods on both seen and unseen test set.

Mid-infrared optical frequency comb generation from a chi-2 optical superlattice box resonator

Optical frequency combs (OFCs) at Mid-Infrared (MIR) wavelengths are essential for applications in precise spectroscopy, gas sensing and molecular fingerprinting, because of its revolutionary precision in both wavelength and frequency domain. The microresonator-based OFCs make a further step towards practical applications by including such high precision in a compact and cost-effective package. However, dispersion engineering is still a challenge for the conventional chi-3 micro-ring resonators and a MIR pump laser is required. Here we develop a different platform of a chi-2 optical superlattice box resonator to generate MIR OFC by optical parametric down conversion. With near-material-limited quality factor of 2.0*10^7, broadband MIR OFC can be generated with over 250 nm span around 2060 nm, where only a common near-infrared laser is necessary as pump. The fine teeth spacing corresponds to a measurable radio frequency beat note at 1.566 GHz, and also results in a fine spectroscopy resolution. Its linewidth is measured to be 6.1 kHz, which reveals a low comb noise that agrees well with the clean temporal waveforms. With high output power of over 370 mW, such MIR OFC is capable for long distance sensing and ranging applications.

The Toybox Dataset of Egocentric Visual Object Transformations

In object recognition research, many commonly used datasets (e.g., ImageNet and similar) contain relatively sparse distributions of object instances and views, e.g., one might see a thousand different pictures of a thousand different giraffes, mostly taken from a few conventionally photographed angles. These distributional properties constrain the types of computational experiments that are able to be conducted with such datasets, and also do not reflect naturalistic patterns of embodied visual experience. As a contribution to the small (but growing) number of multi-view object datasets that have been created to bridge this gap, we introduce a new video dataset called Toybox that contains egocentric (i.e., first-person perspective) videos of common household objects and toys being manually manipulated to undergo structured transformations, such as rotation, translation, and zooming. To illustrate potential uses of Toybox, we also present initial neural network experiments that examine 1) how training on different distributions of object instances and views affects recognition performance, and 2) how viewpoint-dependent object concepts are represented within the hidden layers of a trained network.

Thermal Oxidation of WSe2 Nano-sheets Adhered on SiO2/Si Substrates

Due to the drastically different intralayer versus interlayer bonding strengths, the mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials are highly anisotropic between the in-plane and out-of-plane directions. The structural anisotropy may also play a role in chemical reactions, such as oxidation, reduction, and etching. Here, the composition, structure, and electrical properties of mechanically exfoliated WSe2 nano- sheets on SiO2/Si substrates were studied as a function of the extent of thermal oxidation. A major component of the oxidation, as indicated from optical and Raman data, starts from the nano-sheet edges and propagates laterally towards the center. Partial oxidation also occurs in certain areas at the surface of the flakes, which are shown to be highly conductive by microwave impedance microscopy. Using secondary ion mass spectroscopy, we also observed extensive oxidation at the WSe2/SiO2 interface. The combination of multiple microcopy methods can thus provide vital information on the spatial evolution of chemical reactions on 2D materials and the nanoscale electrical properties of the reaction products.

Local Measurement and Reconstruction for Noisy Graph Signals

The emerging field of signal processing on graph plays a more and more important role in processing signals and information related to networks. Existing works have shown that under certain conditions a smooth graph signal can be uniquely reconstructed from its decimation, i.e., data associated with a subset of vertices. However, in some potential applications (e.g., sensor networks with clustering structure), the obtained data may be a combination of signals associated with several vertices, rather than the decimation. In this paper, we propose a new concept of local measurement, which is a generalization of decimation. Using the local measurements, a local-set-based method named iterative local measurement reconstruction (ILMR) is proposed to reconstruct bandlimited graph signals. It is proved that ILMR can reconstruct the original signal perfectly under certain conditions. The performance of ILMR against noise is theoretically analyzed. The optimal choice of local weights and a greedy algorithm of local set partition are given in the sense of minimizing the expected reconstruction error. Compared with decimation, the proposed local measurement sampling and reconstruction scheme is more robust in noise existing scenarios.

Local-set-based Graph Signal Reconstruction

Signal processing on graph is attracting more and more attentions. For a graph signal in the low-frequency subspace, the missing data associated with unsampled vertices can be reconstructed through the sampled data by exploiting the smoothness of the graph signal. In this paper, the concept of local set is introduced and two local-set-based iterative methods are proposed to reconstruct bandlimited graph signal from sampled data. In each iteration, one of the proposed methods reweights the sampled residuals for different vertices, while the other propagates the sampled residuals in their respective local sets. These algorithms are built on frame theory and the concept of local sets, based on which several frames and contraction operators are proposed. We then prove that the reconstruction methods converge to the original signal under certain conditions and demonstrate the new methods lead to a significantly faster convergence compared with the baseline method. Furthermore, the correspondence between graph signal sampling and time-domain irregular sampling is analyzed comprehensively, which may be helpful to future works on graph signals. Computer simulations are conducted. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the reconstruction methods in various sampling geometries, imprecise priori knowledge of cutoff frequency, and noisy scenarios.

A Distributed Tracking Algorithm for Reconstruction of Graph Signals

The rapid development of signal processing on graphs provides a new perspective for processing large-scale data associated with irregular domains. In many practical applications, it is necessary to handle massive data sets through complex networks, in which most nodes have limited computing power. Designing efficient distributed algorithms is critical for this task. This paper focuses on the distributed reconstruction of a time-varying bandlimited graph signal based on observations sampled at a subset of selected nodes. A distributed least square reconstruction (DLSR) algorithm is proposed to recover the unknown signal iteratively, by allowing neighboring nodes to communicate with one another and make fast updates. DLSR uses a decay scheme to annihilate the out-of-band energy occurring in the reconstruction process, which is inevitably caused by the transmission delay in distributed systems. Proof of convergence and error bounds for DLSR are provided in this paper, suggesting that the algorithm is able to track time-varying graph signals and perfectly reconstruct time-invariant signals. The DLSR algorithm is numerically experimented with synthetic data and real-world sensor network data, which verifies its ability in tracking slowly time-varying graph signals.

Maximum Likelihood Estimation from Sign Measurements with Sensing Matrix Perturbation

The problem of estimating an unknown deterministic parameter vector from sign measurements with a perturbed sensing matrix is studied in this paper. We analyze the best achievable mean square error (MSE) performance by exploring the corresponding Cramér-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB). To estimate the parameter, the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator is utilized and its consistency is proved. We show that the perturbation on the sensing matrix exacerbates the performance of ML estimator in most cases. However, suitable perturbation may improve the performance in some special cases. Then we reformulate the original ML estimation problem as a convex optimization problem, which can be solved efficiently. Furthermore, theoretical analysis implies that the perturbation-ignored estimation is a scaled version with the same direction of the ML estimation. Finally, numerical simulations are performed to validate our theoretical analysis.

Edge Balance Ratio: Power Law from Vertices to Edges in Directed Complex Network

Power law distribution is common in real-world networks including online social networks. Many studies on complex networks focus on the characteristics of vertices, which are always proved to follow the power law. However, few researches have been done on edges in directed networks. In this paper, edge balance ratio is firstly proposed to measure the balance property of edges in directed networks. Based on edge balance ratio, balance profile and positivity are put forward to describe the balance level of the whole network. Then the distribution of edge balance ratio is theoretically analyzed. In a directed network whose vertex in-degree follows the power law with scaling exponent $γ$, it is proved that the edge balance ratio follows a piecewise power law, with the scaling exponent of each section linearly dependents on $γ$. The theoretical analysis is verified by numerical simulations. Moreover, the theoretical analysis is confirmed by statistics of real-world online social networks, including Twitter network with 35 million users and Sina Weibo network with 110 million users.

Proof of Convergence and Performance Analysis for Sparse Recovery via Zero-point Attracting Projection

A recursive algorithm named Zero-point Attracting Projection (ZAP) is proposed recently for sparse signal reconstruction. Compared with the reference algorithms, ZAP demonstrates rather good performance in recovery precision and robustness. However, any theoretical analysis about the mentioned algorithm, even a proof on its convergence, is not available. In this work, a strict proof on the convergence of ZAP is provided and the condition of convergence is put forward. Based on the theoretical analysis, it is further proved that ZAP is non-biased and can approach the sparse solution to any extent, with the proper choice of step-size. Furthermore, the case of inaccurate measurements in noisy scenario is also discussed. It is proved that disturbance power linearly reduces the recovery precision, which is predictable but not preventable. The reconstruction deviation of $p$-compressible signal is also provided. Finally, numerical simulations are performed to verify the theoretical analysis.

Follow Whom? Chinese Users Have Different Choice

Sina Weibo, which was launched in 2009, is the most popular Chinese micro-blogging service. It has been reported that Sina Weibo has more than 400 million registered users by the end of the third quarter in 2012. Sina Weibo and Twitter have a lot in common, however, in terms of the following preference, Sina Weibo users, most of whom are Chinese, behave differently compared with those of Twitter. This work is based on a data set of Sina Weibo which contains 80.8 million users' profiles and 7.2 billion relations and a large data set of Twitter. Firstly some basic features of Sina Weibo and Twitter are analyzed such as degree and activeness distribution, correlation between degree and activeness, and the degree of separation. Then the following preference is investigated by studying the assortative mixing, friend similarities, following distribution, edge balance ratio, and ranking correlation, where edge balance ratio is newly proposed to measure balance property of graphs. It is found that Sina Weibo has a lower reciprocity rate, more positive balanced relations and is more disassortative. Coinciding with Asian traditional culture, the following preference of Sina Weibo users is more concentrated and hierarchical: they are more likely to follow people at higher or the same social levels and less likely to follow people lower than themselves. In contrast, the same kind of following preference is weaker in Twitter. Twitter users are open as they follow people from levels, which accords with its global characteristic and the prevalence of western civilization. The message forwarding behavior is studied by displaying the propagation levels, delays, and critical users. The following preference derives from not only the usage habits but also underlying reasons such as personalities and social moralities that is worthy of future research.

Networked Multiple Description Estimation and Compression with Resource Scalability

We present a joint source-channel multiple description (JSC-MD) framework for resource-constrained network communications (e.g., sensor networks), in which one or many deprived encoders communicate a Markov source against bit errors and erasure errors to many heterogeneous decoders, some powerful and some deprived. To keep the encoder complexity at minimum, the source is coded into K descriptions by a simple multiple description quantizer (MDQ) with neither entropy nor channel coding. The code diversity of MDQ and the path diversity of the network are exploited by decoders to correct transmission errors and improve coding efficiency. A key design objective is resource scalability: powerful nodes in the network can perform JSC-MD distributed estimation/decoding under the criteria of maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) or minimum mean-square error (MMSE), while primitive nodes resort to simpler MD decoding, all working with the same MDQ code. The application of JSC-MD to distributed estimation of hidden Markov models in a sensor network is demonstrated. The proposed JSC-MD MAP estimator is an algorithm of the longest path in a weighted directed acyclic graph, while the JSC-MD MMSE decoder is an extension of the well-known forward-backward algorithm to multiple descriptions. Both algorithms simultaneously exploit the source memory, the redundancy of the fixed-rate MDQ, and the inter-description correlations. They outperform the existing hard-decision MDQ decoders by large margins (up to 8dB). For Gaussian Markov sources, the complexity of JSC-MD distributed MAP sequence estimation can be made as low as that of typical single description Viterbi-type algorithms.

Recursive Structure and Bandwidth of Hales-Numbered Hypercube

The Hales numbered $n$-dimensional hypercube and the corresponding adjacency matrix exhibit interesting recursive structures in $n$. These structures lead to a very simple proof of the well-known bandwidth formula for hypercube, whose proof was thought to be surprisingly difficult. A related problem called hypercube antibandwidth, for which Harper proposed an algorithm, is also reexamined in the light of the above recursive structures, and a close form solution is found.
