RIDGE: Region-Informed Derivative-Guided Evidence Selection for Long Video Understanding

Long videos contain far more visual content than Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs) can process under a fixed visual-token budget, making frame selection essential. Existing query-aware selectors usually estimate frame-query relevance and build a compact subset from high-scoring frames. Although their mechanisms differ, the similarity sequence is still often treated primarily as values to rank or sample from, rather than as an ordered signal whose shape reflects how query-relevant evidence emerges, peaks, and fades over time. This can obscure frames that explain, contextualize, or follow an event, because such evidence may lie on the rising or falling sides of a nearby relevance peak and receive lower absolute scores. We propose RIDGE, a frame selection framework that reads the frame-query similarity curve as a temporal signal. By using local changes and curvature, RIDGE partitions the timeline into structural regions and applies region-specific selection to preserve event cores, transitions, buildup, aftermath, and contextual frames under a fixed budget. It is a lightweight post-processing step on precomputed frame-query scores and requires neither training nor iterative LVLM calls. Across four long-video benchmarks and three backbones, RIDGE achieves the best performance in most settings and remains competitive in the others.

An Empirical Study of Bugs in Data Visualization Libraries

Data visualization (DataViz) libraries play a crucial role in presentation, data analysis, and application development, underscoring the importance of their accuracy in transforming data into visual representations. Incorrect visualizations can adversely impact user experience, distort information conveyance, and influence user perception and decision-making processes. Visual bugs in these libraries can be particularly insidious as they may not cause obvious errors like crashes, but instead mislead users of the underlying data graphically, resulting in wrong decision making. Consequently, a good understanding of the unique characteristics of bugs in DataViz libraries is essential for researchers and developers to detect and fix bugs in DataViz libraries. This study presents the first comprehensive analysis of bugs in DataViz libraries, examining 564 bugs collected from five widely-used libraries. Our study systematically analyzes their symptoms and root causes, and provides a detailed taxonomy. We found that incorrect/inaccurate plots are pervasive in DataViz libraries and incorrect graphic computation is the major root cause, which necessitates further automated testing methods for DataViz libraries. Moreover, we identified eight key steps to trigger such bugs and two test oracles specific to DataViz libraries, which may inspire future research in designing effective automated testing techniques. Furthermore, with the recent advancements in Vision Language Models (VLMs), we explored the feasibility of applying these models to detect incorrect/inaccurate plots. The results show that the effectiveness of VLMs in bug detection varies from 29% to 57%, depending on the prompts, and adding more information in prompts does not necessarily increase the effectiveness. More findings can be found in our manuscript.

Joint Channel Estimation and Training Signal Design for Two-way MIMO Relay Systems

In this paper, a two-stage channel estimation scheme for two-way MIMO relay systems with a single relay antenna is proposed. The backward channel is estimated by using linear minimum mean square estimator (LMMSE) at the first stage, where the optimal training signal is designed. We then mainly focus on the forward channel estimation by using singular value decomposition (SVD) based maximum likelihood method, and the related training signal is proposed. We note that the forward channel estimator is nonlinear and by analyzing the asymptotic Bayesian Cramer-rao Lower Bound (BCRLB), we seek BCRLB as the criterion for training signal design. Finally, the numerical results show that the proposed training signal can improve the MSE performance.
