LUT-NN: Empower Efficient Neural Network Inference with Centroid Learning and Table Lookup

On-device Deep Neural Network (DNN) inference consumes significant computing resources and development efforts. To alleviate that, we propose LUT-NN, the first system to empower inference by table lookup, to reduce inference cost. LUT-NN learns the typical features for each operator, named centroid, and precompute the results for these centroids to save in lookup tables. During inference, the results of the closest centroids with the inputs can be read directly from the table, as the approximated outputs without computations. LUT-NN integrates two major novel techniques: (1) differentiable centroid learning through backpropagation, which adapts three levels of approximation to minimize the accuracy impact by centroids; (2) table lookup inference execution, which comprehensively considers different levels of parallelism, memory access reduction, and dedicated hardware units for optimal performance. LUT-NN is evaluated on multiple real tasks, covering image and speech recognition, and nature language processing. Compared to related work, LUT-NN improves accuracy by 66% to 92%, achieving similar level with the original models. LUT-NN reduces the cost at all dimensions, including FLOPs ($\leq$ 16x), model size ($\leq$ 7x), latency ($\leq$ 6.8x), memory ($\leq$ 6.5x), and power ($\leq$ 41.7%).

In-depth analysis of S-boxes over binary finite fields concerning their differential and Feistel boomerang differential uniformities

Substitution boxes (S-boxes) play a significant role in ensuring the resistance of block ciphers against various attacks. The Difference Distribution Table (DDT), the Feistel Boomerang Connectivity Table (FBCT), the Feistel Boomerang Difference Table (FBDT) and the Feistel Boomerang Extended Table (FBET) of a given S-box are crucial tools to analyze its security concerning specific attacks. However, the results on them are rare. In this paper, we investigate the properties of the power function $F(x):=x^{2^{m+1}-1}$ over the finite field $\gf_{2^n}$ of order $2^n$ where $n=2m$ or $n=2m+1$ ($m$ stands for a positive integer). As a consequence, by carrying out certain finer manipulations of solving specific equations over $\gf_{2^n}$, we give explicit values of all entries of the DDT, the FBCT, the FBDT and the FBET of the investigated power functions. From the theoretical point of view, our study pushes further former investigations on differential and Feistel boomerang differential uniformities for a novel power function $F$. From a cryptographic point of view, when considering Feistel block cipher involving $F$, our in-depth analysis helps select $F$ resistant to differential attacks, Feistel differential attacks and Feistel boomerang attacks, respectively.

MDS Array Codes With Small Sub-packetization Levels and Small Repair Degrees

High-rate minimum storage regenerating (MSR) codes are known to require a large sub-packetization level, which can make meta-data management difficult and hinder implementation in practical systems. A few maximum distance separable (MDS) array code constructions have been proposed to attain a much smaller sub-packetization level by sacrificing a bit of repair bandwidth. However, to the best of our knowledge, only one construction by Guruswami et al. can support the repair of a failed node without contacting all the surviving nodes. This construction is certainly of theoretical interest but not yet practical due to its requirement for very large code parameters. In this paper, we propose a generic transformation that can convert any $(\overline{n}, \overline{k})$ MSR code with a repair degree of $\overline{d}<\overline{n}-1$ into another $(n=s\overline{n},k)$ MDS array code that supports $d<n-1$ with a small sub-packetization level and $(1+ε)$-optimal repair bandwidth (i.e., $1+ε$ times the optimal value) under a specific condition. We obtain three MDS array codes with small sub-packetization levels and $(1+ε)$-optimal repair bandwidth by applying this transformation to three known MSR codes. All the new MDS array codes have a small repair degree of $d<n-1$ and work for both small and large code parameters.

An Efficient Virtual Data Generation Method for Reducing Communication in Federated Learning

Communication overhead is one of the major challenges in Federated Learning(FL). A few classical schemes assume the server can extract the auxiliary information about training data of the participants from the local models to construct a central dummy dataset. The server uses the dummy dataset to finetune aggregated global model to achieve the target test accuracy in fewer communication rounds. In this paper, we summarize the above solutions into a data-based communication-efficient FL framework. The key of the proposed framework is to design an efficient extraction module(EM) which ensures the dummy dataset has a positive effect on finetuning aggregated global model. Different from the existing methods that use generator to design EM, our proposed method, FedINIBoost borrows the idea of gradient match to construct EM. Specifically, FedINIBoost builds a proxy dataset of the real dataset in two steps for each participant at each communication round. Then the server aggregates all the proxy datasets to form a central dummy dataset, which is used to finetune aggregated global model. Extensive experiments verify the superiority of our method compared with the existing classical method, FedAVG, FedProx, Moon and FedFTG. Moreover, FedINIBoost plays a significant role in finetuning the performance of aggregated global model at the initial stage of FL.

Low-Complexity Signal Detection for the Splitting Receiver Scheme

This letter proposes a low-complexity signal detection method for the splitting receiver scheme, which achieves an excellent symbol error rate (SER) performance. Based on the three-dimensional (3D) received signal of the splitting receiver, we derive an equivalent two-dimensional (2D) signal model and develop a low-complexity signal detection method for the practical modulation scheme. The computational complexity of the proposed signal detector is reduced by at least 11.1 times as compared to the 3D signal detection scheme shown in [1]. Simulation results demonstrate that the approximation SER achieved by the low-complexity signal detection is very close to that of the accurate SER at a certain power splitting ratio.

MDS Array Codes With (Near) Optimal Repair Bandwidth for All Admissible Repair Degrees

Abundant high-rate (n, k) minimum storage regenerating (MSR) codes have been reported in the literature. However, most of them require contacting all the surviving nodes during a node repair process, resulting in a repair degree of d=n-1. In practical systems, it may not always be feasible to connect and download data from all surviving nodes, as some nodes may be unavailable. Therefore, there is a need for MSR code constructions with a repair degree of d k, and has a smaller sub-packetization level or finite field than some existing constructions. Additionally, in conjunction with a previous generic transformation to reduce the sub-packetization level, we obtain an MDS array code with a small sub-packetization level and $(1+ε)$-optimal repair bandwidth (i.e., $(1+ε)$ times the optimal repair bandwidth) for repair degree d=n-1. This code outperforms some existing ones in terms of either the sub-packetization level or the field size.

New constructions of optimal linear codes from simplicial complexes

In this paper, we construct a large family of projective linear codes over ${\mathbb F}_{q}$ from the general simplicial complexes of ${\mathbb F}_{q}^m$ via the defining-set construction, which generalizes the results of [IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 66(11):6762-6773, 2020]. The parameters and weight distribution of this class of codes are completely determined. By using the Griesmer bound, we give a necessary and sufficient condition such that the codes are Griesmer codes and a sufficient condition such that the codes are distance-optimal. For a special case, we also present a necessary and sufficient condition for the codes to be near Griesmer codes. Moreover, by discussing the cases of simplicial complexes with one, two and three maximal elements respectively, the parameters and weight distributions of the codes are given more explicitly, which shows that the codes are at most $2$-weight, $5$-weight and $19$-weight respectively. By studying the optimality of the codes for the three cases in detail, many infinite families of optimal linear codes with few weights over ${\mathbb F}_{q}$ are obtained, including Griesmer codes, near Griesmer codes and distance-optimal codes.

Joint Hybrid Beamforming and User Scheduling for Multi-Satellite Cooperative Networks

In this paper, we consider a cooperative communication network where multiple satellites provide services for ground users (GUs) (at the same time and on the same frequency). The communication and computational resources on satellites are usually restricted and the satellite-GU link determination affects the communication performance significantly when multiple satellites provide services for multiple GUs in a collaborative manner. Therefore, considering the limitation of the on-board radio-frequency chains, we first propose a hybrid beamforming method consisting of analog beamforming for beam alignment and digital beamforming for interference mitigation. Then, to establish appropriate connections between satellites and GUs, we propose a heuristic user scheduling algorithm which determines the connections according to the total spectral efficiency (SE) increment of the multi-satellite cooperative network. Next, a joint hybrid beamforming and user scheduling scheme is proposed to dramatically improve the performance of the multi-satellite cooperative network. Moreover, simulations are conducted to compare the proposed schemes with representative baselines and analyze the key factors influencing the performance of the multi-satellite cooperative network. It is shown that the proposed joint beamforming and user scheduling approach can provide 47.2% SE improvement on average as compared with its non-joint counterpart.

A Fundamental Tradeoff Among Storage, Computation, and Communication for Distributed Computing over Star Network

Coded distributed computing can alleviate the communication load by leveraging the redundant storage and computation resources with coding techniques in distributed computing. In this paper, we study a MapReduce-type distributed computing framework over star topological network, where all the workers exchange information through a common access point. The optimal tradeoff among the normalized number of the stored files (storage load), computed intermediate values (computation load) and transmitted bits in the uplink and downlink (communication loads) are characterized. A coded computing scheme is proposed to achieve the Pareto-optimal tradeoff surface, in which the access point only needs to perform simple chain coding between the signals it receives, and information-theretical bound matching the surface is also provided.

Mutual Information-Maximizing Quantized Belief Propagation Decoding of Regular LDPC Codes

In this paper, we propose a class of finite alphabet iterative decoder (FAID), called mutual information-maximizing quantized belief propagation (MIM-QBP) decoder, for decoding regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Our decoder follows the reconstruction-calculation-quantization (RCQ) decoding architecture that is widely used in FAIDs. We present the first complete and systematic design framework for the RCQ parameters, and prove that our design with sufficient precision at node update is able to maximize the mutual information between coded bits and exchanged messages. Simulation results show that the MIM-QBP decoder can always considerably outperform the state-of-the-art mutual information-maximizing FAIDs that adopt two-input single-output lookup tables for decoding. Furthermore, with only 3 bits being used for each exchanged message, the MIM-QBP decoder can outperform the floating-point belief propagation decoder at the high signal-to-noise ratio regions when testing on high-rate LDPC codes with a maximum of 10 and 30 iterations.

PMDS Array Codes With Small Sub-packetization, Small Repair Bandwidth/Rebuilding Access

Partial maximum distance separable (PMDS) codes are a kind of erasure codes where the nodes are divided into multiple groups with each forming an MDS code with a smaller code length, thus they allow repairing a failed node with only a few helper nodes and can correct all erasure patterns that are information-theoretically correctable. However, the repair of a failed node of PMDS codes still requires a large amount of communication if the group size is large. Recently, PMDS array codes with each local code being an MSR code were introduced to reduce the repair bandwidth further. However, they require extensive rebuilding access and unavoidably a significant sub packetization level. In this paper, we first propose two constructions of PMDS array codes with two global parities that have smaller sub-packetization levels and much smaller finite fields than the existing one. One construction can support an arbitrary number of local parities and has $(1+ε)$-optimal repair bandwidth (i.e., $(1+ε)$ times the optimal repair bandwidth), while the other one is limited to two local parities but has significantly smaller rebuilding access and its sub packetization level is only $2$. In addition, we present a construction of PMDS array code with three global parities, which has a smaller sub-packetization level as well as $(1+ε)$-optimal repair bandwidth, the required finite field is significantly smaller than existing ones.

New Spectrally Constrained Sequence Sets with Optimal {Periodic} Cross-Correlation

Spectrally constrained sequences (SCSs) play an important role in modern communication and radar systems operating over non-contiguous spectrum. Despite numerous research attempts over the past years, very few works are known on the constructions of optimal SCSs with low cross-correlations. In this paper, we address such a major problem by introducing a unifying framework to construct unimodular SCS families using circular Florentine rectangles (CFRs) and interleaving techniques. By leveraging the uniform power allocation in the frequency domain for all the admissible carriers (a necessary condition for beating the existing periodic correlation lower bound of SCSs), we present a tighter correlation lower bound and show that it is achievable by our proposed SCS families including multiple SCS sets with zero correlation zone properties.

Parity-Check Matrix Partitioning for Efficient Layered Decoding of QC-LDPC Codes

In this paper, we consider how to partition the parity-check matrices (PCMs) to reduce the hardware complexity and computation delay for the row layered decoding of quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes. First, we formulate the PCM partitioning as an optimization problem, which targets to minimize the maximum column weight of each layer while maintaining a block cyclic shift property among different layers. As a result, we derive all the feasible solutions for the problem and propose a tight lower bound $ω_{LB}$ on the minimum possible maximum column weight to evaluate a solution. Second, we define a metric called layer distance to measure the data dependency between consecutive layers and further illustrate how to identify the solutions with desired layer distance from those achieving the minimum value of $ω_{LB}=1$, which is preferred to reduce computation delay. Next, we demonstrate that up-to-now, finding an optimal solution for the optimization problem with polynomial time complexity is unachievable. Therefore, both enumerative and greedy partition algorithms are proposed instead. After that, we modify the quasi-cyclic progressive edge-growth (QC-PEG) algorithm to directly construct PCMs that have a straightforward partition scheme to achieve $ω_{LB} $ or the desired layer distance. Simulation results showed that the constructed codes have better error correction performance and smaller average number of iterations than the underlying 5G LDPC code.

The differential spectrum and boomerang spectrum of a class of locally-APN functions

In this paper, we study the boomerang spectrum of the power mapping $F(x)=x^{k(q-1)}$ over ${\mathbb F}_{q^2}$, where $q=p^m$, $p$ is a prime, $m$ is a positive integer and $\gcd(k,q+1)=1$. We first determine the differential spectrum of $F(x)$ and show that $F(x)$ is locally-APN. This extends a result of [IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 57(12):8127-8137, 2011] from $(p,k)=(2,1)$ to general $(p,k)$. We then determine the boomerang spectrum of $F(x)$ by making use of its differential spectrum, which shows that the boomerang uniformity of $F(x)$ is 4 if $p=2$ and $m$ is odd and otherwise it is 2. Our results not only generalize the results in [Des. Codes Cryptogr. 89:2627-2636, 2021] and [arXiv:2203.00485, 2022] but also extend the example $x^{45}$ over ${\mathbb F}_{2^8}$ in [Des. Codes Cryptogr. 89:2627-2636, 2021] into an infinite class of power mappings with boomerang uniformity 2.

RIS-Assisted Cooperative NOMA with SWIPT

This paper studies the application of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (C-NOMA) networks with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). We aim for maximizing the rate of the strong user with guaranteed weak user's quality of service (QoS) by jointly optimizing power splitting factors, beamforming coefficients, and RIS reflection coefficients in two transmission phases. The formulated problem is difficult to solve due to its complex and non-convex constraints. To tackle this challenging problem, we first use alternating optimization (AO) framework to transform it into three subproblems, and then use the penalty-based arithmetic-geometric mean approximation (PBAGM) algorithm and the successive convex approximation (SCA)-based method to solve them. Numerical results verify the superiority of the proposed algorithm over the baseline schemes.

Low Ambiguity Zone: Theoretical Bounds and Doppler-Resilient Sequence Design in Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems

In radar sensing and communications, designing Doppler resilient sequences (DRSs) with low ambiguity function for delay over the entire signal duration and Doppler shift over the entire signal bandwidth is an extremely difficult task. However, in practice, the Doppler frequency range is normally much smaller than the bandwidth of the transmitted signal, and it is relatively easy to attain quasi-synchronization for delays far less than the entire signal duration. Motivated by this observation, we propose a new concept called low ambiguity zone (LAZ) which is a small area of the corresponding ambiguity function of interest defined by the certain Doppler frequency and delay. Such an LAZ will reduce to a zero ambiguity zone (ZAZ) if the maximum ambiguity values of interest are zero. In this paper, we derive a set of theoretical bounds on periodic LAZ/ZAZ of unimodular DRSs with and without spectral constraints, which include the existing bounds on periodic global ambiguity function as special cases. These bounds may be used as theoretical design guidelines to measure the optimality of sequences against Doppler effect. We then introduce four optimal constructions of DRSs with respect to the derived ambiguity lower bounds based on some algebraic tools such as characters over finite field and cyclic difference sets.

A New Cooperative Repair Scheme with k + 1 Helper Nodes for (n, k) Hadamard MSR codes with Small Sub-packetization

Cooperative repair model is an available technology to deal with multiple node failures in distributed storage systems. Recently, explicit constructions of cooperative MSR codes were given by Ye (IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 2020) with sub-packetization level $(d-k+h)(d-k+1)^n$. Specifically, the sub-packetization level is $(h+1)2^n$ when $d=k+1$. In this paper, we propose a new cooperative repair scheme by means of the inter-instance and intra-instance pairing inherited from the perfect code which reduces the sub-packetization to $2^n$ when $(h+1)|2^n$ and $(2\ell+1)2^n$ when $h+1=(2\ell+1)2^m$ for $m\ge 0$, $\ell\ge 1$ with $d=k+1$ helper nodes. That is to say, the sub-packetization is $h + 1 $ times or $2^m$ times less than Ye's. It turned out to be the best result so far known.

A Class of Minimum Storage Cooperative Regenerating Codes with Low Access Property

In this paper, a new repair scheme for a modified construction of MDS codes is studied. The obtained repair scheme has optimal bandwidth for multiple failed nodes under the cooperative repair model. In addition, the repair scheme has relatively low access property, where the number of data accessed is less than two times the optimal value.
