A Fundamental Storage-Communication Tradeoff for Distributed Computing with Straggling Nodes

Placement delivery arrays for distributed computing (Comp-PDAs) have recently been proposed as a framework to construct universal computing schemes for MapReduce-like systems. In this work, we extend this concept to systems with straggling nodes, i.e., to systems where a subset of the nodes cannot accomplish the assigned map computations in due time. Unlike most previous works that focused on computing linear functions, our results are universal and apply for arbitrary map and reduce functions. Our contributions are as follows. Firstly, we show how to construct a universal coded computing scheme for MapReduce-like systems with straggling nodes from any given Comp-PDA. We also characterize the storage and communication loads of the resulting scheme in terms of the Comp-PDA parameters. Then, we prove an information-theoretic converse bound on the storage-communication (SC) tradeoff achieved by universal computing schemes with straggling nodes. We show that the information-theoretic bound matches the performance achieved by the coded computing schemes with straggling nodes corresponding to the Maddah-Ali and Niesen (MAN) PDAs, i.e., to the Comp-PDAs describing Maddah-Ali and Niesen's coded caching scheme. Interestingly, the same Comp-PDAs (the MAN-PDAs) are optimal for any number of straggling nodes, which implies that the map phase of optimal coded computing schemes does not need to be adapted to the number of stragglers in the system. We finally prove that while the points that lie exactly on the fundamental SC tradeoff cannot be achieved with Comp-PDAs that require smaller number of files than the MAN-PDAs, this is possible for some of the points that lie close to the SC tradeoff. For these latter points, the decrease in the requested number of files can be exponential in the number of nodes of the system.

On Optimal Locally Repairable Codes with Super-Linear Length

Locally repairable codes which are optimal with respect to the bound presented by Prakash et al. are considered. New upper bounds on the length of such optimal codes are derived. The new bounds both improve and generalize previously known bounds. Optimal codes are constructed, whose length is order-optimal when compared with the new upper bounds. The length of the codes is super-linear in the alphabet size.

A new Capacity-Achieving Private Information Retrieval Scheme with (Almost) Optimal File Length for Coded Servers

In a distributed storage system, private information retrieval (PIR) guarantees that a user retrieves one file from the system without revealing any information about the identity of its interested file to any individual server. In this paper, we investigate $(N,K,M)$ coded sever model of PIR, where each of $M$ files is distributed to the $N$ servers in the form of $(N,K)$ maximum distance separable (MDS) code for some $N>K$ and $M>1$. As a result, we propose a new capacity-achieving $(N,K,M)$ coded linear PIR scheme such that it can be implemented with file length $\frac{K(N-K)}{\gcd(N,K)}$, which is much smaller than the previous best result $K\big(\frac{N}{\gcd(N,K)}\big)^{M-1}$. Notably, among all the capacity-achieving coded linear PIR schemes, we show that the file length is optimal if $M>\big\lfloor \frac{K}{\gcd(N,K)}-\frac{K}{N-K}\big\rfloor+1$, and within a multiplicative gap $\frac{K}{\gcd(N,K)}$ of a lower bound on the minimum file length otherwise.

An Efficient Optimal Algorithm for the Successive Minima Problem

In many applications including integer-forcing linear multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) receiver design, one needs to solve a successive minima problem (SMP) on an $n$-dimensional lattice to get an optimal integer coefficient matrix $\A^\star\in \mathbb{Z}^{n\times n}$. In this paper, we first propose an efficient optimal SMP algorithm with an $\bigO(n^2)$ memory complexity. The main idea behind the new algorithm is it first initializes with a suitable suboptimal solution, which is then updated, via a novel algorithm with only $\bigO(n^2)$ flops in each updating, until $\A^{\star}$ is obtained. Different from existing algorithms which find $\A^\star$ column by column through using a sphere decoding search strategy $n$ times, the new algorithm uses a search strategy once only. We then rigorously prove the optimality of the proposed algorithm. Furthermore, we theoretically analyze its complexity. In particular, we not only show that the new algorithm is $Ω(n)$ times faster than the most efficient existing algorithm with polynomial memory complexity, but also assert that it is even more efficient than the most efficient existing algorithm with exponential memory complexity. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the optimality and efficiency of our novel SMP algorithm.

Linear Coded Caching Scheme for Centralized Networks

Coded caching systems have been widely studied to reduce the data transmission during the peak traffic time. In practice, two important parameters of a coded caching system should be considered, i.e., the rate which is the maximum amount of the data transmission during the peak traffic time, and the subpacketization level, the number of divided packets of each file when we implement a coded caching scheme. We prefer to design a scheme with rate and packet number as small as possible since they reflect the transmission efficiency and complexity of the caching scheme, respectively. In this paper, we first characterize a coded caching scheme from the viewpoint of linear algebra and show that designing a linear coded caching scheme is equivalent to constructing three classes of matrices satisfying some rank conditions. Then based on the invariant linear subspaces and combinatorial design theory, several classes of new coded caching schemes over $\mathbb{F}_2$ are obtained by constructing these three classes of matrices. It turns out that the rate of our new rate is the same as the scheme construct by Yan et al. (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 63, 5821-5833, 2017), but the packet number is significantly reduced. A concatenating construction then is used for flexible number of users. Finally by means of these matrices, we show that the minimum storage regenerating codes can also be used to construct coded caching schemes.

A Generic Transformation to Enable Optimal Repair in MDS Codes for Distributed Storage Systems

We propose a generic transformation that can convert any nonbinary $(n=k+r,k)$ maximum distance separable (MDS) code into another $(n,k)$ MDS code over the same field such that 1) some arbitrarily chosen $r$ nodes have the optimal repair bandwidth and the optimal rebuilding access, 2) for the remaining $k$ nodes, the normalized repair bandwidth and the normalized rebuilding access (over the file size) are preserved, 3) the sub-packetization level is increased only by a factor of $r$. Two immediate applications of this generic transformation are then presented. The first application is that we can transform any nonbinary MDS code with the optimal repair bandwidth or the optimal rebuilding access for the systematic nodes only, into a new MDS code which possesses the corresponding repair optimality for all nodes. The second application is that by applying the transformation multiple times, any nonbinary $(n,k)$ scalar MDS code can be converted into an $(n,k)$ MDS code with the optimal repair bandwidth and the optimal rebuilding access for all nodes, or only a subset of nodes, whose sub-packetization level is also optimal.

A Sharp Condition for Exact Support Recovery of Sparse Signals With Orthogonal Matching Pursuit

Support recovery of sparse signals from noisy measurements with orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) has been extensively studied in the literature. In this paper, we show that for any $K$-sparse signal $\x$, if the sensing matrix $\A$ satisfies the restricted isometry property (RIP) of order $K + 1$ with restricted isometry constant (RIC) $δ_{K+1} < 1/\sqrt {K+1}$, then under some constraint on the minimum magnitude of the nonzero elements of $\x$, the OMP algorithm exactly recovers the support of $\x$ from the measurements $\y=\A\x+\v$ in $K$ iterations, where $\v$ is the noise vector. This condition is sharp in terms of $δ_{K+1}$ since for any given positive integer $K\geq 2$ and any $1/\sqrt{K+1}\leq t<1$, there always exist a $K$-sparse $\x$ and a matrix $\A$ satisfying $δ_{K+1}=t$ for which OMP may fail to recover the signal $\x$ in $K$ iterations. Moreover, the constraint on the minimum magnitude of the nonzero elements of $\x$ is weaker than existing results.

Constructions of Coded Caching Schemes with Flexible Memory Size

Coded caching scheme recently has become quite popular in the wireless network due to its effectively reducing the transmission amount (denote such an amount by $R$) during peak traffic times. However to realize a coded caching scheme, each file must be divided into $F$ packets which usually increases the computation complexity of a coded caching scheme. So we prefer to construct a caching scheme that decreases the order of $F$ for practical implementations. In this paper, we construct four classes of new schemes where two classes can significantly reduce the value of $F$ by increasing a little $R$ comparing with the well known scheme proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, and $F$ in the other two classes grows sub-exponentially with $K$ by sacrificing more $R$. It is worth noting that a tradeoff between $R$ and $F$, which is a hot topic in the field of caching scheme, is proposed by our constructions. In addition, our constructions include all the results constructed by Yan et al., (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 63, 5821-5833, 2017) and some main results obtained by Shangguan et al., (arXiv preprint arXiv:1608.03989v1) as the special cases.

Sharp Sufficient Conditions for Stable Recovery of Block Sparse Signals by Block Orthogonal Matching Pursuit

In this paper, we use the block orthogonal matching pursuit (BOMP) algorithm to recover block sparse signals $\x$ from measurements $\y=\A\x+\v$, where $\v$ is an $\ell_2$-bounded noise vector (i.e., $\|\v\|_2\leq ε$ for some constant $ε$). We investigate some sufficient conditions based on the block restricted isometry property (block-RIP) for exact (when $\v=\0$) and stable (when $\v\neq\0$) recovery of block sparse signals $\x$. First, on the one hand, we show that if $\A$ satisfies the block-RIP with $δ_{K+1}<1/\sqrt{K+1}$, then every block $K$-sparse signal $\x$ can be exactly or stably recovered by BOMP in $K$ iterations. On the other hand, we show that, for any $K\geq 1$ and $1/\sqrt{K+1}\leq δ<1$, there exists a matrix $\A$ satisfying the block-RIP with $δ_{K+1}=δ$ and a block $K$-sparse signal $\x$ such that BOMP may fail to recover $\x$ in $K$ iterations. Then, we study some sufficient conditions for recovering block $α$-strongly-decaying $K$-sparse signals. We show that if $\A$ satisfies the block-RIP with $δ_{K+1}<\sqrt{2}/2$, then every $α$-strongly-decaying block $K$-sparse signal can be exactly or stably recovered by BOMP in $K$ iterations under some conditions on $α$. Our newly found sufficient condition on the block-RIP of $\A$ is less restrictive than that for $\ell_1$ minimization for this special class of sparse signals. Furthermore, for any $K\geq 1$, $α>1$ and $\sqrt{2}/2\leq δ<1$, the recovery of $\x$ may fail in $K$ iterations for a sensing matrix $\A$ which satisfies the block-RIP with $δ_{K+1}=δ$. Finally, we study some sufficient conditions for partial recovery of block sparse signals. Specifically, if $\A$ satisfies the block-RIP with $δ_{K+1}<\sqrt{2}/2$, then BOMP is guaranteed to recover some blocks of $\x$ if these blocks satisfy a sufficient condition.

SMDP-based Downlink Packet Scheduling Scheme for Solar Energy Assisted Heterogeneous Networks

Renewable energy assisted heterogeneous networks can improve system capacity and reduce conventional energy consumption. In this paper, we propose a semi-Markov decision process (SMDP)-based downlink packet scheduling scheme for solar energy assisted heterogeneous networks (HetNets), where solar radiation is modeled as a continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC) and the arrivals of multi-class downlink packets are modeled as Poisson processes. The proposed downlink packet scheduling scheme can be compatible with the mainstream wireless packet networks such as long-term evolution (LTE) networks and the fifth-generation (5G) networks because the SMDP is a real-time admission control model. To obtain an asymptotically optimal downlink packet scheduling policy, we solve the semi-Markov decision problem using the relative value iteration algorithm under average criterion and the value iteration algorithm under discounted criterion, respectively. The simulation results show that the average cost of the SMDP-based packet scheduling scheme is less than that of the greedy packet scheduling scheme.

Finite State Multiple-Access Wiretap Channel with Delayed Feedback

Recently, it has been shown that the time-varying multiple-access channel (MAC) with perfect channel state information (CSI) at the receiver and delayed feedback CSI at the transmitters can be modeled as the finite state MAC (FS-MAC) with delayed state feedback, where the time variation of the channel is characterized by the statistics of the underlying state process. To study the fundamental limit of the secure transmission over multi-user wireless communication systems, we re-visit the FS-MAC with delayed state feedback by considering an external eavesdropper, which we call the finite state multiple-access wiretap channel (FS-MAC-WT) with delayed feedback. The main contribution of this paper is to show that taking full advantage of the delayed channel output feedback helps to increase the secrecy rate region of the FS-MAC-WT with delayed state feedback, and the results of this paper are further illustrated by a degraded Gaussian fading example.

On the Placement Delivery Array Design for Coded Caching Scheme in D2D Networks

The coded caching scheme is an efficient technique as a solution to reduce the wireless network burden during the peak times in a Device-to-Device (D2D in short) communications. In a coded caching scheme, each file block should be divided into $F$ packets. It is meaningful to design a coded caching scheme with the rate and $F$ as small as possible, especially in the practice for D2D network. In this paper we first characterize coded caching scheme for D2D network by a simple array called D2D placement delivery array (DPDA in shot). Consequently some coded caching scheme for D2D network can be discussed by means of an appropriate DPDA. Secondly we derive the lower bounds on the rate and $F$ of a DPDA. According these two lower bounds, we show that the previously known determined scheme proposed by Ji et al., (IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, 62(2): 849-869,2016) reaches our lower bound on the rate, but does not meet the lower bound on $F$ for some parameters. Finally for these parameters, we construct three classes of DPDAs which meet our two lower bounds. Based on these DPDAs, three classes of coded caching scheme with low rate and lower $F$ are obtained for D2D network.

A Sharp Condition for Exact Support Recovery of with Orthogonal Matching Pursuit

Support recovery of sparse signals from noisy measurements with orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) has been extensively studied. In this paper, we show that for any $K$-sparse signal $\x$, if a sensing matrix $\A$ satisfies the restricted isometry property (RIP) with restricted isometry constant (RIC) $δ_{K+1} < 1/\sqrt {K+1}$, then under some constraints on the minimum magnitude of nonzero elements of $\x$, OMP exactly recovers the support of $\x$ from its measurements $\y=\A\x+\v$ in $K$ iterations, where $\v$ is a noise vector that is $\ell_2$ or $\ell_{\infty}$ bounded. This sufficient condition is sharp in terms of $δ_{K+1}$ since for any given positive integer $K$ and any $1/\sqrt{K+1}\leq δ<1$, there always exists a matrix $\A$ satisfying the RIP with $δ_{K+1}=δ$ for which OMP fails to recover a $K$-sparse signal $\x$ in $K$ iterations. Also, our constraints on the minimum magnitude of nonzero elements of $\x$ are weaker than existing ones. Moreover, we propose worst-case necessary conditions for the exact support recovery of $\x$, characterized by the minimum magnitude of the nonzero elements of $\x$.

On the Placement and Delivery Schemes for Decentralized Coded Caching System

Network based on distributed caching of content is a new architecture to alleviate the ongoing explosive demands for rate of multi-media traffic. In caching networks, coded caching is a recently proposed technique that achieves significant performance gains compared to uncoded caching schemes. In this paper, we derive a lower bound on the average rate with a memory constraint for a family of caching allocation placement and a family of XOR cooperative delivery. The lower bound inspires us how placement and delivery affect the rate memory tradeoff. Based on the clues, we design a new placement and two new delivery algorithms. On one hand, the new placement scheme can allocate the cache more flexibly compared to grouping scheme. On the other hand, the new delivery can exploit more cooperative opportunities compared to the known schemes. The simulations validate our idea.

Coded Caching Schemes with Low Rate and Subpacketizations

Coded caching scheme, which is an effective technique to increase the transmission efficiency during peak traffic times, has recently become quite popular among the coding community. Generally rate can be measured to the transmission in the peak traffic times, i.e., this efficiency increases with the decreasing of rate. In order to implement a coded caching scheme, each file in the library must be split in a certain number of packets. And this number directly reflects the complexity of a coded caching scheme, i.e., the complexity increases with the increasing of the packet number. However there exists a tradeoff between the rate and packet number. So it is meaningful to characterize this tradeoff and design the related Pareto-optimal coded caching schemes with respect to both parameters. Recently, a new concept called placement delivery array (PDA) was proposed to characterize the coded caching scheme. However as far as we know no one has yet proved that one of the previously known PDAs is Pareto-optimal. In this paper, we first derive two lower bounds on the rate under the framework of PDA. Consequently, the PDA proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen is Pareto-optimal, and a tradeoff between rate and packet number is obtained for some parameters. Then, from the above observations and the view point of combinatorial design, two new classes of Pareto-optimal PDAs are obtained. Based on these PDAs, the schemes with low rate and packet number are obtained. Finally the performance of some previously known PDAs are estimated by comparing with these two classes of schemes.

On the Gap Between Decentralized and Centralized Coded Caching Schemes

Caching is a promising solution to satisfy the ongoing explosive demands for multi-media traffics. Recently, Maddah-Ali and Niesen proposed both centralized and de-centralized coded caching schemes, which are able to attain significant performance gains over uncoded caching schemes. Particular, their work indicates that there exists a performance gap between the decentralized coded caching scheme and the centralized coded caching scheme. In this paper, we investigate this gap. As a result, we prove that the multiplicative gap (i.e., the ratio of their performances) is between 1 and 1:5. The upper bound tightens the original one of 12 by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, while the lower bound verifies the intuition that the centralized coded caching scheme always outperforms its decentralized counterpart. Notably, both bounds are achievable in some cases. Furthermore, we prove that the gap can be arbitrarily close to 1 if the number of users is large enough, which suggests the great potential in practical applications to use the less optimal but more practical decentralized coded caching scheme

Achieving both positive secrecy rates of the users in two-way wiretap channel by individual secrecy

In this paper, the individual secrecy of two-way wiretap channel is investigated, where two legitimate users' messages are separately guaranteed secure against an external eavesdropper. For one thing, in some communication scenarios, the joint secrecy is impossible to achieve both positive secrecy rates of two users. For another, the individual secrecy satisfies the secrecy demand of many practical communication systems. Thus, firstly, an achievable secrecy rate region is derived for the general two-way wiretap channel with individual secrecy. In a deterministic channel, the region with individual secrecy is shown to be larger than that with joint secrecy.Secondly, outer bounds on the secrecy capacity region are obtained for the general two-way wiretap channel and for two classes of special two-way wiretap channels. The gap between inner and outer bounds on the secrecy capacity region is explored via the binary input two-way wiretap channels and the degraded Gaussian two-way wiretap. Most notably, the secrecy capacity regions are established for the XOR channel and the degraded Gaussian two-way wiretap channel.Furthermore, the secure sum-rate of the degraded Gaussian two-way wiretap channel under the individual secrecy constraint is demonstrated to be strictly larger than that under the joint secrecy constraint.

Effects of Feedback on the One-sided Secrecy of Two-way Wiretap through Multiple Transmissions

In this paper, the one-sided secrecy of two-way wiretap channel with feedback is investigated, where the confidential messages of one user through multiple transmissions is guaranteed secure against an external eavesdropper. For one thing, one-sided secrecy satisfies the secure demand of many practical scenarios. For another, the secrecy is measured over many blocks since the correlation between eavesdropper's observation and the confidential messages in successive blocks, instead of secrecy measurement of one block in previous works. Thus, firstly, an achievable secrecy rate region is derived for the general two-way wiretap channel with feedback through multiple transmissions under one-sided secrecy. Secondly, outer bounds on the secrecy capacity region are also obtained. The gap between inner and outer bounds on the secrecy capacity region is explored via the binary input two-way wiretap channels. Most notably, the secrecy capacity regions are established for the XOR channel. Furthermore, the result shows that the achievable rate region with feedback is larger than that without feedback. Therefore, the benefit role of feedback is precisely characterized for two-way wiretap channel with feedback under one-sided secrecy.
