Deep SCNN-based Real-time Object Detection for Self-driving Vehicles Using LiDAR Temporal Data

Real-time accurate detection of three-dimensional (3D) objects is a fundamental necessity for self-driving vehicles. Most existing computer vision approaches are based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Although the CNN-based approaches can achieve high detection accuracy, their high energy consumption is a severe drawback. To resolve this problem, novel energy efficient approaches should be explored. Spiking neural network (SNN) is a promising candidate because it has orders-of-magnitude lower energy consumption than CNN. Unfortunately, the studying of SNN has been limited in small networks only. The application of SNN for large 3D object detection networks has remain largely open. In this paper, we integrate spiking convolutional neural network (SCNN) with temporal coding into the YOLOv2 architecture for real-time object detection. To take the advantage of spiking signals, we develop a novel data preprocessing layer that translates 3D point-cloud data into spike time data. We propose an analog circuit to implement the non-leaky integrate and fire neuron used in our SCNN, from which the energy consumption of each spike is estimated. Moreover, we present a method to calculate the network sparsity and the energy consumption of the overall network. Extensive experiments have been conducted based on the KITTI dataset, which show that the proposed network can reach competitive detection accuracy as existing approaches, yet with much lower average energy consumption. If implemented in dedicated hardware, our network could have a mean sparsity of 56.24% and extremely low total energy consumption of 0.247mJ only. Implemented in NVIDIA GTX 1080i GPU, we can achieve 35.7 fps frame rate, high enough for real-time object detection.

HODET: Hybrid Object DEtection and Tracking using mmWave Radar and Visual Sensors

Image sensors have been explored heavily in automotive applications for collision avoidance and varying levels of autonomy. It requires a degree of brightness, therefore, the use of an image sensor in nighttime operation or dark conditions can be problematic along with challenging weather such as fog. Radar sensors have been employed to help cover the various environmental challenges with visible spectrum cameras. Edge computing technology has the potential to address a number of issues such as real-time processing requirements, off-loading of processing from congested servers, and size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) constraints. This paper proposes a novel Hybrid Object DEtection and Tracking (HODET) using mmWave Radar and Visual Sensors at the edge. The HODET is a computing application of low SWaP-C electronics performing object detection, tracking and identification algorithms with the simultaneous use of image and radar sensors. While the machine vision camera alone could estimate the distance of an object, the radar sensor will provide an accurate distance and vector of movement. This additional data accuracy can be leveraged to further discriminate a detected object to protect against spoofing attacks. A real-world smart community public safety monitoring scenario is selected to verify the effectiveness of HODET, which detects, tracks objects of interests and identify suspicious activities. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the approach.

Temporal Pulses Driven Spiking Neural Network for Fast Object Recognition in Autonomous Driving

Accurate real-time object recognition from sensory data has long been a crucial and challenging task for autonomous driving. Even though deep neural networks (DNNs) have been successfully applied in this area, most existing methods still heavily rely on the pre-processing of the pulse signals derived from LiDAR sensors, and therefore introduce additional computational overhead and considerable latency. In this paper, we propose an approach to address the object recognition problem directly with raw temporal pulses utilizing the spiking neural network (SNN). Being evaluated on various datasets (including Sim LiDAR, KITTI and DVS-barrel) derived from LiDAR and dynamic vision sensor (DVS), our proposed method has shown comparable performance as the state-of-the-art methods, while achieving remarkable time efficiency. It highlights the SNN's great potentials in autonomous driving and related applications. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to use SNN to directly perform object recognition on raw temporal pulses.

Evaluation of the $θ_K$ and the Mixing angle $θ_{h_1}$

The $θ_K$ has been re-evaluated via mass relations and latest experimental results, meanwhile, the $M_{K_{1B}}$ also be obtained. Based on the singlet-octet mixing model and quark-flavor mixing model, the $θ_{h_1}$ has been recalculated with a modified formula, by inputting $M_{K_{1B}}$ instead of $θ_K$. The values are calculated to be $|{θ_K}| = {(42.6 \pm 2.2)^ \circ }$, $M_{K_{1B}} = 1333.9 \pm 4.6\ {\rm{MeV}}/c^{2}$ and $θ_{h_1} = 29.5\pm 2.0^\circ$. Using these calculations as input, we predict that the branching fraction of $J/ψ\to η'(η)h_1(1170)$ is about one order higher than that of $J/ψ\to η'(η)h_1(1415)$, which can be measured in future experiments to test the validity of these two models.

Image Captioning with Integrated Bottom-Up and Multi-level Residual Top-Down Attention for Game Scene Understanding

Image captioning has attracted considerable attention in recent years. However, little work has been done for game image captioning which has some unique characteristics and requirements. In this work we propose a novel game image captioning model which integrates bottom-up attention with a new multi-level residual top-down attention mechanism. Firstly, a lower-level residual top-down attention network is added to the Faster R-CNN based bottom-up attention network to address the problem that the latter may lose important spatial information when extracting regional features. Secondly, an upper-level residual top-down attention network is implemented in the caption generation network to better fuse the extracted regional features for subsequent caption prediction. We create two game datasets to evaluate the proposed model. Extensive experiments show that our proposed model outperforms existing baseline models.

A Survey on Simulation Tools and Testbeds for Cognitive Radio Networks Study

Efficient utility of radio spectrum has been a hot topic as the wireless communication spectrum is a precious resource. The past decade has witnessed intensive research in spectrum sharing techniques. Most of the techniques are based on cognitive radio networks (CRNs) because cognitive capabilities are essential for optimizing spectrum efficiency and guaranteeing safe coexistence in the presence of the spectrum uncertainty. However, due to the high complexity of the problem, most research has been limited to theoretical analysis. It is non-trivial to build a simulator that is capable of carrying out a comprehensive experimental study. In this paper, a survey is conducted to provide a big picture of the available simulators in CRNs research. By illustrating their major functionalities, the insight enables researchers to select tools that match their needs. In addition, with a better understanding of the advantages and constraints, this survey aims at providing a guideline for simulator designers who have been trying to meet the requirements from the CRN research community.

Explore Recurrent Neural Network for PUE Attack Detection in Practical CRN Models

The proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoTs) and pervasive use of many different types of mobile computing devices make wireless communication spectrum a precious resource. In order to accommodate the still fast increasing number of devices requesting wireless connection, more efficient, fine-grained spectrum allocation and sharing schemes are badly in need. Cognitive radio networks (CRNs) have been widely recognized as one promising solution, in which the secondary users (SUs) are allowed to share channels with licensed primary users (PUs) as long as bringing no interference to the normal operations of the PUs. However, malicious attackers or selfish SUs may mimic the behavior of PUs to occupy the channels illegally. It is nontrivial to accurately, timely detect such kind of primary user emulation (PUE) attacks. In this paper, an efficient PUE attacked detection method is introduced leveraging the recurrent neural network (RNN). After a fundamental algorithm using basic RNN, an advanced version taking advantage of long-short-term-memory (LSTM) is proposed, which is more efficient on processing time series with long term memory. The experimental study has provided deeper insights about the different performances the RNNs achieved and validated the effectiveness of the proposed detectors.

An Adaptive Primary User Emulation Attack Detection Mechanism for Cognitive Radio Networks

The proliferation of advanced information technologies (IT), especially the wide spread of Internet of Things (IoTs) makes wireless spectrum a precious resource. Cognitive radio network (CRN) has been recognized as the key to achieve efficient utility of communication bands. Because of the great difficulty, high complexity and regulations in dynamic spectrum access (DSA), it is very challenging to protect CRNs from malicious attackers or selfish abusers. Primary user emulation (PUE) attacks is one type of easy-to-launch but hard-to-detect attacks in CRNs that malicious entities mimic PU signals in order to either occupy spectrum resource selfishly or conduct Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. Inspired by the physical features widely used as the fingerprint of variant electronic devices, an adaptive and realistic PUE attack detection technique is proposed in this paper. It leverages the PU transmission features that attackers are not able to mimic. In this work, the transmission power is selected as one of the hard-to-mimic features due to the intrinsic discrepancy between PUs and attackers, while considering constraints in real implementations. Our experimental results verified the effectiveness and correctness of the proposed mechanism.

Who is Smarter? Intelligence Measure of Learning-based Cognitive Radios

Cognitive radio (CR) is considered as a key enabling technology for dynamic spectrum access to improve spectrum efficiency. Although the CR concept was invented with the core idea of realizing cognition, the research on measuring CR cognitive capabilities and intelligence is largely open. Deriving the intelligence measure of CR not only can lead to the development of new CR technologies, but also makes it possible to better configure the networks by integrating CRs with different cognitive capabilities. In this paper, for the first time, we propose a data-driven methodology to quantitatively measure the intelligence factors of the CR with learning capabilities. The basic idea of our methodology is to run various tests on the CR in different spectrum environments under different settings and obtain various performance data on different metrics. Then we apply factor analysis on the performance data to identify and quantize the intelligence factors and cognitive capabilities of the CR. More specifically, we present a case study consisting of 144 different types of CRs. The CRs are different in terms of learning-based dynamic spectrum access strategies, number of sensors, sensing accuracy, processing speed, and algorithmic complexity. Five intelligence factors are identified for the CRs through our data analysis. We show that these factors comply well with the nature of the tested CRs, which validates the proposed intelligence measure methodology.

The Folding Deuteron Optical Model Potentials

For 52 target nuclei with deuteron as projectile, we calculate the reaction cross sections and elastic scattering angular distributions, as well as the $χ^2$ values for 11 kinds of deuteron optical model potentials: our global deuteron optical potentials and 10 folding optical potentials calculated with 2 phenomenological global nucleon optical potentials given by Koning \textit{et al}(KD) and by Varner\textit{et al}(CH89), and 8 microscopic nucleon optical potentials with the generalized Skyrme force parameters(GS1-6) and modified Skyrme force parameters(SKa, SKb). We find that for constructing the folding deuteron optical potential, both SKa and SKb are the best Skyrme force parameters of the microscopic nucleon optical potential proposed by Q. Shen \textit{et al}.
