Proximity Effect of Epitaxial Iron Phthalocyanine Molecules on High-Quality Graphene Devices

Depositing magnetic insulators on graphene has been a promising route to introduce magnetism via exchange proximity interaction in graphene for future spintronics applications. Molecule-based magnets may offer unique opportunities because of their synthesis versatility. Here, we investigated the magnetic proximity effect of epitaxial iron phthalocyanine (FePc) molecules on high-quality monolayer and bilayer graphene devices on hexagonal boron nitride substrate by probing the local and non-local transport. Although the FePc molecules introduce large hole doping effects combined with mobility degradation, the magnetic proximity gives rise to a canted antiferromagnetic state under a magnetic field in the monolayer graphene. On bilayer graphene and FePc heterostructure devices, the non-local transport reveals a pronounced Zeeman spin-Hall effect. Further analysis of the scattering mechanism in the bilayer shows a dominated long-range scattering. Our findings in graphene/organic magnetic insulator heterostructure provide a new insight for the use of molecule-based magnets in two-dimensional spintronic devices.

Scaling turbulence in the near-wall region

A new velocity scale is derived that yields a Reynolds number independent profile for the streamwise turbulent fluctuations in the near-wall region of wall bounded flows for $y^+<25$. The scaling demonstrates the important role played by the wall shear stress fluctuations and how the large eddies determine the Reynolds number dependence of the near-wall turbulence distribution.

Averaged fidelity-based steering criteria

In the present work, the averaged fidelity is introduced as the steering parameter. According to the definitions of steering from Alice to Bob, a general scheme for designing linear steering criteria is developed for a high-dimensional system. For a given set of measurements on Bob's side, two quantities, the so-called nonsteering thresholds, can be defined. If the measured averaged fidelity exceeds these thresholds, the state shared by Alice and Bob is steerable from Alice to Bob, and the measurements performed by Alice are also verified to be incompatible. Within the general scheme, we also construct a linear steering inequality when the set of measurements performed by Bob has a continuous setting. Some applications are also provided.

Diagnosing steerability of a bipartite state with the nonsteering threshold

In the present work, a traditional quantity, the averaged fidelity, is introduced as the steering parameter. From the definitions of steering from Alice to Bob and the joint measurability, a general scheme is developed to design linear steering criteria. For a given set of measurements on Bob's side, the so-called nonsteering threshold is defined to quantify the ability to detect steering. If the measured averaged fidelity exceeds this threshold, it is shown that the state shared by Alice and Bob is steerable from Alice to Bob, and the measurements performed by Alice are also verified to be incompatible. Within the general scheme, a discussion about how to design optimal criteria is provided for two different scenarios: (a) to find the optimal measurements on Bob's side when the state is unknown and (b) to find the optimal measurements for Alice when the state and the measurements on Bob's side are given.

Magnetic order induced polarization anomaly of Raman scattering in 2D magnet CrI$_3$

The recent discovery of 2D magnets has revealed various intriguing phenomena due to the coupling between spin and other degree of freedoms (such as helical photoluminescence, nonreciprocal SHG). Previous research on the spin-phonon coupling effect mainly focuses on the renormalization of phonon frequency. Here we demonstrate that the Raman polarization selection rules of optical phonons can be greatly modified by the magnetic ordering in 2D magnet CrI$_3$. For monolayer samples, the dominant A$\rm_{1g}$ peak shows abnormally high intensity in the cross polarization channel at low temperature, which is forbidden by the selection rule based on the lattice symmetry. While for bilayer, this peak is absent in the cross polarization channel for the layered antiferromagnetic (AFM) state and reappears when it is tuned to the ferromagnetic (FM) state by an external magnetic field. Our findings shed light on exploring the emergent magneto-optical effects in 2D magnets.

Robustness of the concatenated quantum error-correction protocol against noise for channels affected by fluctuation

In quantum error correction, the description of noise channel cannot be completely accurate, and fluctuation always appears in noise channel. It is found that when fluctuation of physical noise channel is considered, the average effective channel is dependent only on the average of physical noise channel, and the average of physical noise channel here plays the role of the independent error model in the previous works. Now, one may conclude that in the independent error model, the results in previous works are also valid for average channel where fluctuation exists. In some typical cases, our numerical simulations in the concatenated QEC protocol with 5-qubit code, 7-qubit Steane code and 9-qubit Shor confirm this conjecture. For 5-qubit code, the effective channels are approximate to depolarizing channel as the concatenated level increases. For Steane code, the effective channels are approximate to one Pauli channel as the concatenated level increases. For Shor code, the effective channels are approximate to one of Pauli-$X$ and Pauli-$Z$ channels in each level, and in next concatenated level, the effective channels are approximate to the other. Meanwhile, for these codes, the numerical results indicate that the degree of approximation increases with the concatenated level increases, and the fluctuation of noise channel decays exponentially as concatenated QEC performed. On the error-correction threshold, attenuation ratio of standard deviation of channel fidelity roughly has a stable value. On the other hand, standard deviations of off-diagonal elements of quantum process matrix (Pauli Form) decay more quickly than standard deviations of diagonal elements.

PRSNet: Part Relation and Selection Network for Bone Age Assessment

Bone age is one of the most important indicators for assessing bone's maturity, which can help to interpret human's growth development level and potential progress. In the clinical practice, bone age assessment (BAA) of X-ray images requires the joint consideration of the appearance and location information of hand bones. These kinds of information can be effectively captured by the relation of different anatomical parts of hand bone. Recently developed methods differ mostly in how they model the part relation and choose useful parts for BAA. However, these methods neglect the mining of relationship among different parts, which can help to improve the assessment accuracy. In this paper, we propose a novel part relation module, which accurately discovers the underlying concurrency of parts by using multi-scale context information of deep learning feature representation. Furthermore, based on the part relation, we explore a new part selection module, which comprehensively measures the importance of parts and select the top ranking parts for assisting BAA. We jointly train our part relation and selection modules in an end-to-end way, achieving state-of-the-art performance on the public RSNA 2017 Pediatric Bone Age benchmark dataset and outperforming other competitive methods by a significant margin.

Theory and experiments of coherent photon coupling in semiconductor nanowire waveguides with quantum dot molecules

We present a quantum optics theory, numerical calculations, and experiments on coupled quantumdots in semiconductor nanowire waveguides. We first present an analytical Green function theory tocompute the emitted spectra of two coupled quantum dots, treated as point dipoles, fully accountingfor retardation effects, and demonstrate the signatures of coherent and incoherent coupling througha pronounced splitting of the uncoupled quantum dot resonances and modified spectral broadening. In the weak excitation regime, the classical Green functions used in models are verified and justifiedthrough full 3D solutions of Maxwell equations for nanowire waveguides, specifically using finite-difference time-domain techniques, showing how both waveguide modes and near-field evanescentmode coupling is important. The theory exploits an ensemble-based quantum description, and andan intuitive eigenmode-expansion based Maxwell theory. We then demonstrate how the molecularresonances (in the presence of coupling) take on the form of bright and dark (or quasi-dark) reso-nances, and study how these depend on the excitation and detection conditions. To go beyond theweak excitation regime, we also introduce a quantum master equation approach to model the non-linear spectra from an increasing incoherent pump field, which shows the role of the pump field onthe oscillator strengths and broadening of the molecular resonances, with and without pure dephas-ing. Next, we present experimental photoluminescence spectra for spatially-separated quantum dotmolecules (InAsP) in InP nanowires, which show clear signatures of pronounced splittings, thoughthey also highlight additional mechanisms that are not accounted for in the dipole-dipole couplingmodel. Two different approaches are taken to control the spatial separation of the quantum dotmolecules, and we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Certifying quantumness with the classical fidelity threshold

For a given ensemble of input and target states, the classical fidelity threshold (CFT) is the maximum valve of the averaged fidelity, and it can be achieved with a measure-and-prepare operation. This quantity can be employed to verify whether the channel is in the quantum domain or not. In a recent work by Chiribella and Xie [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 110}, 213601 (2013)], it was showed that all the information about the input and target states can be equivalently described by an entangled state and an effective entanglement-braking (EB) channel, and the CFTs can be defined with the Choi matrix of the effective EB channel. Following this idea, the protocol proposed by Fuchs and Sasaki [Quantum. Inf. Comput, {\bf 3}, 377 (2003)] are reformulated in terms of the effective EB channel, and ss applications, the deterministic and probabilistic CFTs for qubit states and the coherent states are derived in this paper.

Bright single InAsP quantum dots at telecom wavelengths in position-controlled InP nanowires: the role of the photonic waveguide

We report on the site-selected growth of bright single InAsP quantum dots embedded within InP photonic nanowire waveguides emitting at telecom wavelengths. We demonstrate a dramatic dependence of the emission rate on both the emission wavelength and the nanowire diameter. With an appropriately designed waveguide, tailored to the emission wavelength of the dot, an increase in count rate by nearly two orders of magnitude (0.4kcps to 35kcps) is obtained for quantum dots emitting in the telecom O-band. Using emission-wavelength-optimised waveguides, we demonstrate bright, narrow linewidth emission from single InAsP quantum dots with an unprecedented tuning range from 880nm to 1550nm. These results pave the way towards efficient single photon sources at telecom wavelengths using deterministically grown InAsP/InP nanowire quantum dots.

A solid state source of photon triplets based on quantum dot molecules

Producing advanced quantum states of light is a priority in quantum information technologies. While remarkable progress has been made on single photons and photon pairs, multipartite correlated photon states are usually produced in purely optical systems by post-selection or cascading, with extremely low efficiency and exponentially poor scaling. Multipartite states enable improved tests of the foundations of quantum mechanics as well as implementations of complex quantum optical networks and protocols. It would be favorable to directly generate these states using solid state systems, for better scaling, simpler handling, and the promise of reversible transfer of quantum information between stationary and flying qubits. Here we use the ground states of two optically active coupled quantum dots to directly produce photon triplets. The wavefunctions of photogenerated excitons localized in these ground states are correlated via molecular hybridization and Coulomb interactions. The formation of a triexciton leads to a triple cascade recombination and sequential emission of three photons with strong correlations. The quantum dot molecule is embedded in an epitaxially grown nanowire engineered for single-mode waveguiding and improved extraction efficiency at the emission wavelength. We record 65.62 photon triplets per minute, surpassing rates of all earlier reported sources, in spite of the moderate efficiency of our detectors. Our structure and data represent a breakthrough towards implementing multipartite photon entanglement and multi-qubit readout schemes in solid state devices, suitable for integrated quantum information processing.

Performance of five-qubit code for arbitrary error channels

In quantum error correction, it is an important assumption that errors on different qubits are independent. In our previous work [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 92}, 052320 (2015)], the generality of the concatenated five-qubit code has been investgated when noises of the principal system and the auxiliary environment are assumed to be the same. In the error correction with concatenated code, tiny differences (in fidelity or independent errors) between initial quantum channels may introduce different effective channels in the next level, and therefore, it is necessary to study a meaningful question: Does five-qubit code still work efficiently when errors on different qubits are different? In the present work, it is discovered that even errors for different qubits are arbitrary, the five-qubit code still works efficiently. Since it is much easier and more accurate to measure the fidelity, one can construct quantum error correction with five-qubit code according to the initial channel fidelity, and it is not necessary to know the complete information of the initial channel. Moreover, when the initial channel fidelity is below $0.992$, the fidelity threshold for five-qubit code is the fidelity of the effective channel after error correction in bit-flip channels.

Pryce's mass-center operators and the anomalous velocity of a spinning electron

In the present work, we develop a method to calculate the anomalous velocity of a spinning electron. From Dirac equation, the relationships among the expectation values of the Pryce's mass-center operator, the position operator, the spin operator and the canonical momentum operator are investigated. By requiring that the center of mass for the classical spinning electron is related to the expectation value of the Pryce's mass-center operator, one can obtain a classical expression for the position of the electron. With the classical equations of motion, the anomalous velocity of a spinning electron can be easily calculated. It is shown that two factors contribute to the anomalous velocity: one is dependent on the selection of the Pryce's mass-center operators and the other is a type-independent velocity expressed by the rotational velocity and the Lorentz force.

Generality of the concatenated five-qubit code

In this work, a quantum error correction (QEC) procedure with the concatenated five-qubit code is used to construct a near-perfect effective qubit channel (with a error below $10^{-5}$) from arbitrary noise channels. The exact performance of the QEC is characterized by a Choi matrix, which can be obtained via a simple and explicit protocol. In a noise model with five free parameters, our numerical results indicate that the concatenated five-qubit code is general: To construct a near-perfect effective channel from the noise channels, the necessary size of the concatenated five-qubit code depends only on the entanglement fidelity of the initial noise channels.

Quantum discord for the general two-qubit case

Recently, Girolami and Adesso have demonstrated that the calculation of quantum discord for two-qubit case can be viewed as to solve a pair of transcendental equation (Phys. Rev. A, {\bf 83}, 052108(2011)). In present work, we introduce the generalized Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism and apply it as a convenient tool for constructing transcendental equations. For the general two-qubit case, we show that the transcendental equations always have a finite set of universal solutions, this result can be viewed as a generalization of the one get by Ali, Rau, and Alber (Phys. Rev. A, {\bf 81}, 042105 (2010)). For a subclass of $X$ state, we find the analytical solutions by solving the transcendental equations.

Geometric discord: A resource for increments of quantum key distribution through twirling

In the present work, we consider a scenario where an arbitrary two-qubit pure state is applied to generate a randomly distributed key via the generalized EPR protocol. Using the twirling procedure to convert the pure state into a Werner state, the error rate of the key can be reduced by a factor of $2/3$. This effect indicates that entanglement is not the sufficient resource of the generalized EPR protocol since it is not increased in the twirling procedure. Instead of entanglement, the geometric discord is suggested to be the general quantum resource for this task.

A protocol to estimate the average fidelity of the bipartite system

In present work, we shall develope a protocol to estimate the average fidelity for the bipartite system. We show that the average fidelity should be known if the three measurable quantities, the average survive probability of the product state and the the average survive probablity of each subsystem, have been decided. Our protocol can be also applied to decide the selected element of the quantum proess matrix.

Group-theoretic approach for multi-copy programmable discriminators between two unknown qudit states

The discrimination between two unknown states can be performed by a universal programmable discriminator, where the copies of the two possible states are stored in two program systems respectively and the copies of data, which we want to confirm, are provided in the data system. In the present paper, we propose a group-theretic approach to the multi-copy programmable state discrimination problem. By equivalence of unknown pure states to known mixed states and with the representation theory of U(n) group, we construct the Jordan basis to derive the analytical results for both the optimal unambiguous discrimination and minimum-error discrimination. The POVM operators for unambiguous discrimination and orthogonal measurement operators for minimum-error discrimination are obtained. We find that the optimal failure probability and minimum-error probability for the discrimination between the mean input mixd states are dependent on the dimension of the unknown qudit states. We applied the approach to generalize the results of He and Bergou (Phys. Rev. A {\bf 75}, 032316 (2007)) from qubit to qudit case, and we further solve the problem of programmable dicriminators with arbitrary copies of unknown states in both program and data systems.
