Regular multi-types and the Bloom conjecture

We prove equality of the vector field (iterated commutator) type and the regular contact type, which together with the Bloom theorem on equality of the Levi-form type and the regular contact type provides a complete solution of a long standing open problem of Bloom in the case of complex dimension three. For general dimensions, we verify the Bloom conjecture when $s=n-2$, which provides the first positive result in the pseudoconvexity sensitive case for a real hypersurface in ${\mathbb{C}}^n$ after his important work in 1981.

Flattening a non-degenerate CR singular point of real codimension two

This paper continues the previous studies in two papers of Huang-Yin [HY3-4] on the flattening problem of a CR singular point of real codimension two sitting in a submanifold in ${\mathbb C}^{n+1}$ with $n+1\ge 3$, whose CR points are non-minimal. Partially based on the geometric approach initiated in [HY3] and a formal theory approach used in [HY4], we are able to provide a very general flattening theorem for a non-degenerate CR singular point. As an application, we provide a solution to the local complex Plateau problem and obtain the analyticity of the local hull of holomorphy near a real analytic definite CR singular point in a general setting.

Chern-Moser-Weyl Tensor and Embeddings into Hyperquadrics

The first part of the article surveys some work on the Chern-Moser-Weyl tensor and its application in the embeddability problem into hyperquadrics. In the last section, we give a negative answer to a folklore conjecture concerning the embeddability of compact, strongly pseudoconvex, real algebraic hypersurfaces into a sphere of sufficiently high dimension.

On the CR transversality of holomorphic maps into hyperquadrics

Let $M_\ell$ be a smooth Levi-nondegenerate hypersurface of signature $\ell$ in $\mathbf C^n$ with $ n\ge 3$, and write $H_\ell^N$ for the standard hyperquadric of the same signature in $\mathbf C^N$ with $N-n< \frac{n-1}{2}$. Let $F$ be a holomorphic map sending $M_\ell$ into $H_\ell^N$. Assume $F$ does not send a neighborhood of $M_\ell$ in $\mathbf C^n$ into $H_\ell^N$. We show that $F$ is necessarily CR transversal to $M_\ell$ at any point. Equivalently, we show that $F$ is a local CR embedding from $M_\ell$ into $H_\ell^N$.

On the Third Gap for Proper Holomorphic Maps between Balls

In this paper, we study the gap rigidity phenomenon for proper holomorphic maps between balls of different dimension. We show that any $F\in prop_3({\mathbb{B}}^n, {\mathbb{B}} ^N)$, with $3n<N\leq 4n-7$ and $n\geq 7$, is equivalent to a map of the form $(G,0)$ with $G\in Rat ({\mathbb{B}}^n,{\mathbb{B}}^{3n})$. The main ingredients for the proof of our main theorem are the normal form obtained by Huang-Ji-Xu and a lemma of the first author.

Submanifolds of Hermitian symmetric spaces

We study the problem of non-relativity for a complex Euclidean space and a bounded symmetric domain equipped with their canonical metrics. In particular, we answer a question raised by Di Scala. This paper is dedicated to the memory of Salah Baouendi, a great teacher and a close friend to many of us.

Non-embeddability into a fixed sphere for a family of compact real algebraic hypersurfaces

We study the holomorphic embedding problem from a compact strongly pseudoconvex real algebraic hypersurface into a sphere of higher dimension. We construct a family of compact strongly pseudoconvex hypersurfaces $M_ε$ in $\mathbb{C}^2,$ and prove that for any integer $N$, there is a number $ε(N)$ with $0<ε(N)<1$ such that for any $ε$ with $0<ε<ε(N)$, $M_ε$ can not be locally holomorphically embedded into the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{2N-1}$ in $\mathbb{C}^N.$

Non-embeddable Real Algebraic Hypersurfaces

We study various classes of real hypersurfaces that are not embeddable into more special hypersurfaces in higher dimension, such as spheres, real algebraic compact strongly pseudoconvex hypersurfaces or compact pseudoconvex hypersurfaces of finite type. We conclude by stating some open problems.

Flattening of CR singular points and analyticity of local hull of holomorphy

A primary goal in this paper is to study the question that asks when a real analytic submanifold $M$ in ${\mathbb{C}}^{n+1}$ bounds a real analytic (up to $M$) Levi-flat hypersurface $\hat{M}$ near $p\in M$ such that $\hat{M}$ is foliated by a family of complex hypersurfaces moving along the normal direction of $M$ at $p$, and gives the invariant local hull of holomorphy of $M$ near $p$. This question is equivalent to the holomorphic flattening problem for $M$ near $p$. We will give an affirmative answer to above question when $p$ is a real complex tangent point with at least one elliptic direction (positively curved direction). We also obtain a formal flattening theorem under the assumption of one non-parabolic direction.

CR and Holomorphic Embeddings and Pseudo-conformally Flat Metrics

We study the non-embddability property for a class of real hypersurfaces, called real hypersurfaces of involution type, into the sphere in the low codimensional case, by making use of property of a naturally related Gauss curvature. We also study rigidity problems for conformal maps between a class of Kähler manifolds with pseud-conformally flat metrics.

Holomorphic Mappings between Hyperquadrics with Small Signature Difference

In this paper, we study holomorphic mappings sending a hyperquadric of signature $\ell$ in $\bC^n$ into a hyperquadric of signature $\ell'$ in $\bC^N$. We show (Theorem \ref{main}) that if the signature difference $\ell'-\ell$ is not too large, then the mapping can be normalized by automorphisms of the target hyperquadric to a particularly simple form and, in particular, the image of the mapping is contained in a complex plane of a dimension that depends only on $\ell$ and $\ell'$, and not on the target dimension $N$. We also prove a Hopf Lemma type result (Theorem \ref{main2}) for such mappings.

A codimension two CR singular submanifold that is formally equivalent to a symmetric quadric

Let $M\subset \mathbb{C}^{n+1}$ ($n\geq 2$) be a real analytic submanifold defined by an equation of the form: $w=|z|^2+O(|z|^3)$, where we use $(z,w)\in \mathbb{C}^{n}\times \mathbb{C}$ for the coordinates of $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$. We first derive a pseudo-normal form for $M$ near 0. We then use it to prove that $(M,0)$ is holomorphically equivalent to the quadric $(M_\infty: w=|z|^2,0)$ if and only if it can be formally transformed to $(M_\infty,0)$. We also use it to give a necessary and sufficient condition when $(M,0)$ can be formally flattened. The result is due to Moser for the case of $n=1$.

A criterion for a proper rational map to be equivalent to a proper polynomial map

In this paper, we give an explicit criterion when a rational holomorphic map between balls is equivalent to a polynomial holomorphic map. Making use of this criterion, we show that any proper rational holomorphic map from B^2 into B^N of degree two is equivalent to a polynomial holomorphic map; we also construct rational holomorphic maps of degree 3 that are almost linear but are not equivalent to polynomial holomorphic maps.

A Bishop surface with a vanishing Bishop invariant

We derive a complete set of invariants for a formal Bishop surface near a point of complex tangent with a vanishing Bishop invariant under the action of formal transformations. We prove that the modular space of Bishop surfaces with a vanishing Bishop invariant and with a fixed Moser invariant $s<\infty$ is of infinite dimension. We also prove that the equivalence class of the germ of a generic real analytic Bishop surface near a complex tangent with a vanishing Bishop invariant can not be determined by a finite part of the Taylor expansion of its defining equation. This answers, in the negative, a problem raised by J. Moser in 1985 after his joint work with Webster in 1983 and his own work in 1985.

A new gap phenomenon for proper holomorphic mappings from B^n into B^N

In this paper (Math. Res. Lett. 13 (2006). No 4, 509-523), the authors established a pseudo-normal form for proper holomoprhic mappings between balls in complex spaces with degenerate rank. This then was used to give a complete characterization for all proper holomorphic maps with geometric rank one, which, in particular, includes the following as an immediate application: Theorem: Any rational holomorphic map from B^n into B^N with $4\le n\le N\le 3n-4$ is equivalent to the D'Angelo map $$F_θ(z',w)=(z',(\cosθ)w,(\sinθ)z_1w, ..., (\sinθ)z_{n-1}w, (\sinθ)w^2, 0'), 0\le θ\leq π/2.$$ It is a well-known (but also quite trivial) fact that any non-constant rational CR map from a piece of the sphere $\partial {B^n}$ into the sphere $\partial {B^N}$ can be extended as a proper rational holomoprhic map from $B^n$ into $B^N$ ($N\ge n\ge 2$). By using the rationality theorem that the authors established in [HJX05], one sees that the the above theorem (and also the main theorem of the paper) holds in the same way for any non-constant $C^3$-smooth CR map from a piece of $\partial {B^n}$ into $\partial{B^N}$. The paper [Math. Res. Lett. 13 (2006). No 4, 509-523] was first electronically published by Mathematical Research Letters several months ago at its home website: http://www.mrlonline.org/mrl/0000-000-00/Huang-Ji-Xu2.pdf. Rigidity of CR-immersions into spheres

We consider local CR-immersions of a strictly pseudoconvex real hypersurface $M\subset\bC^{n+1}$, near a point $p\in M$, into the unit sphere $\mathbb S\subset\bC^{n+d+1}$ with $d>0$. Our main result is that if there is such an immersion $f\colon (M,p)\to \mathbb S$ and $d < n/2$, then $f$ is {\em rigid} in the sense that any other immersion of $(M,p)$ into $\mathbb S$ is of the form $ϕ\circ f$, where $ϕ$ is a biholomorphic automorphism of the unit ball $\mathbb B\subset\bC^{n+d+1}$. As an application of this result, we show that an isolated singularity of an irreducible analytic variety of codimension $d$ in $\bC^{n+d+1}$ is uniquely determined up to affine linear transformations by the local CR geometry at a point of its Milnor link.
