Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for Energy Efficiency in D2D Communication Network

In this letter, the joint power control of D2D users and the passive beamforming of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) for a RIS-aided device-to-device (D2D) communication network is investigated to maximize energy efficiency. This non-convex optimization problem is divided into two subproblems, which are passive beamforming and power control. The two subproblems are optimized alternately. We first decouple the passive beamforming at RIS based on the Lagrangian dual transform. This problem is solved by using fractional programming. Then we optimize the power control by using the Dinkelbach method. By iteratively solving the two subproblems, we obtain a suboptimal solution for the joint optimization problem. Numerical results have verified the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, which can significantly improve the energy efficiency of the D2D network.

Two-Timescale Optimization for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided D2D Underlay Communication

The performance of a device-to-device (D2D) underlay communication system is limited by the co-channel interference between cellular users (CUs) and D2D devices. To address this challenge, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided D2D underlay system is studied in this paper. A two-timescale optimization scheme is proposed to reduce the required channel training and feedback overhead, where transmit beamforming at the base station (BS) and power control at the D2D transmitter are adapted to instantaneous effective channel state information (CSI); and the IRS phase shifts are adapted to slow-varying channel mean. Based on the two-timescale optimization scheme, we aim to maximize the D2D ergodic rate subject to a given outage probability constrained signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) target for the CU. The two-timescale problem is decoupled into two sub-problems, and the two sub-problems are solved iteratively with closed-form expressions. Numerical results verify that the two-timescale based optimization performs better than several baselines, and also demonstrate a favorable trade-off between system performance and CSI overhead.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided Constant-Envelope Wireless Power Transfer

By reconfiguring the propagation environment of electromagnetic waves artificially, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been regarded as a promising and revolutionary hardware technology to improve the energy and spectrum efficiency of wireless networks. In this paper, we study a RIS aided multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) wireless power transfer (WPT) system, where the transmitter is equipped with a constant-envelope analog beamformer. We formulate a novel problem to maximize the total received power of all the users by jointly optimizing the beamformer at transmitter and the phase shifts at the RISs, subject to the individual minimum received power constraints of users. We further solve the problem iteratively with a closed-form expression for each step. Numerical results show the performance gain of deploying RIS and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Statistical Beamforming for FDD Downlink Massive MIMO via Spatial Information Extraction and Beam Selection

In this paper, we study the beamforming design problem in frequency-division duplexing (FDD) downlink massive MIMO systems, where instantaneous channel state information (CSI) is assumed to be unavailable at the base station (BS). We propose to extract the information of the angle-of-departures (AoDs) and the corresponding large-scale fading coefficients (a.k.a. spatial information) of the downlink channel from the uplink channel estimation procedure, based on which a novel downlink beamforming design is presented. By separating the subpaths for different users based on the spatial information and the hidden sparsity of the physical channel, we construct near-orthogonal virtual channels in the beamforming design. Furthermore, we derive a sum-rate expression and its approximations for the proposed system. Based on these closed-form rate expressions, we develop two low-complexity beam selection schemes and carry out asymptotic analysis to provide valuable insights on the system design. Numerical results demonstrate a significant performance improvement of our proposed algorithm over the state-of-the-art beamforming approach.

Passive Beamforming and Information Transfer Design for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces Aided Multiuser MIMO Systems

This paper investigates the passive beamforming and information transfer (PBIT) technique for the multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with the aid of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), where the RIS enhances the primary communication via passive beamforming and at the same time delivers additional information by the spatial modulation (which adjusts the on-off states of the reflecting elements). For the passive beamforming design, we propose to maximize the sum channel capacity of the RIS-aided multiuser MIMO channel and formulate the problem as a two-step stochastic program. A sample average approximation (SAA) based iterative algorithm is developed for the efficient passive beamforming design of the considered scheme. To strike a balance between complexity and performance, we then propose a simplified beamforming algorithm by approximating the stochastic program as a deterministic alternating optimization problem. For the receiver design, the signal detection at the receiver is a bilinear estimation problem since the RIS information is multiplicatively modulated onto the reflected signals of the reflecting elements. To solve this bilinear estimation problem, we develop a turbo message passing (TMP) algorithm in which the factor graph associated with the problem is divided into two modules: one for the estimation of the user signals and the other for the estimation of the RIS's on-off states. The two modules are executed iteratively to yield a near-optimal low-complexity solution. Furthermore, we extend the design of the multiuser MIMO PBIT scheme from single-RIS to multi-RIS, by leveraging the similarity between the single-RIS and multi-RIS system models. Extensive simulation results are provided to demonstrate the advantages of our passive beamforming and receiver designs.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted UAV Communication: Joint Trajectory Design and Passive Beamforming

Thanks to the line-of-sight (LoS) transmission and flexibility, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) effectively improve the throughput of wireless networks. Nevertheless, the LoS links are prone to severe deterioration by complex propagation environments, especially in urban areas. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), as a promising technique, can significantly improve the propagation environment and enhance communication quality by intelligently reflecting the received signals. Motivated by this, the joint UAV trajectory and RIS's passive beamforming design for a novel RIS-assisted UAV communication system is investigated to maximize the average achievable rate in this letter. To tackle the formulated non-convex problem, we divide it into two subproblems, namely, passive beamforming and trajectory optimization. We first derive a closed-form phase-shift solution for any given UAV trajectory to achieve the phase alignment of the received signals from different transmission paths. Then, with the optimal phase-shift solution, we obtain a suboptimal trajectory solution by using the successive convex approximation (SCA) method. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can considerably improve the average achievable rate of the system.

Double-Sparsity Learning Based Channel-and-Signal Estimation in Massive MIMO with Generalized Spatial Modulation

In this paper, we study joint antenna activity detection, channel estimation, and multiuser detection for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with general spatial modulation (GSM). We first establish a double-sparsity massive MIMO model by considering the channel sparsity of the massive MIMO channel and the signal sparsity of GSM. Based on the double-sparsity model, we formulate a blind detection problem. To solve the blind detection problem, we develop message-passing based blind channel-and-signal estimation (BCSE) algorithm. The BCSE algorithm basically follows the affine sparse matrix factorization technique, but with critical modifications to handle the double-sparsity property of the model. We show that the BCSE algorithm significantly outperforms the existing blind and training-based algorithms, and is able to closely approach the genie bounds (with either known channel or known signal). In the BCSE algorithm, short pilots are employed to remove the phase and permutation ambiguities after sparse matrix factorization. To utilize the short pilots more efficiently, we further develop the semi-blind channel-and-signal estimation (SBCSE) algorithm to incorporate the estimation of the phase and permutation ambiguities into the iterative message-passing process. We show that the SBCSE algorithm substantially outperforms the counterpart algorithms including the BCSE algorithm in the short-pilot regime.

Variance State Propagation for Structured Sparse Bayesian Learning

We propose a compressed sensing algorithm termed variance state propagation (VSP) for block-sparse signals, i.e., sparse signals that have nonzero coefficients occurring in clusters. The VSP algorithm is developed under the Bayesian framework. A hierarchical Gaussian prior is introduced to depict the clustered patterns in the sparse signal. Markov random field (MRF) is introduced to characterize the state of the variances of the Gaussian priors. Such a hierarchical prior has the potential to encourage clustered patterns and suppress isolated coefficients whose patterns are different from their respective neighbors. The core idea of our algorithm is to iteratively update the variances in the prior Gaussian distribution. The message passing technique is employed in the design of the algorithm. For messages that are difficult to calculate, we correspondingly design reasonable methods to achieve approximate calculations. The hyperparameters can be updated within the iteration process. Simulation results demonstrate that the VSP algorithm is able to handle a variety of block-sparse signal recovery tasks and presents a significant advantage over the existing methods.

Cascaded Channel Estimation for Large Intelligent Metasurface Assisted Massive MIMO

In this letter, we consider the problem of channel estimation for large intelligent metasurface (LIM) assisted massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The main challenge of this problem is that the LIM integrated with a large number of low-cost metamaterial antennas can only passively reflect the incident signal by a certain phase shift, and does not have any signal processing capability. To deal with this, we introduce a general framework for the estimation of the transmitter-LIM and LIM-receiver cascaded channel, and propose a two-stage algorithm that includes a sparse matrix factorization stage and a matrix completion stage. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed method can achieve accurate channel estimation for LIM-assisted massive MIMO systems.

Passive Beamforming and Information Transfer via Large Intelligent Surface

Large intelligent surface (LIS) has emerged as a promising new solution to improve the energy and spectrum efficiency of wireless networks. A LIS, composed of a large number of low-cost and energy-efficient reconfigurable passive reflecting elements, enhances wireless communications by reflecting impinging electro-magnetic waves. In this paper, we propose a novel passive beamforming and information transfer (PBIT) technique, in which the LIS simultaneously enhances the primary communication and sends information to the receiver. We develop a passive beamforming method to improve the average receive signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).We also establish a two-step approach at the receiver to retrieve the information from both the transmitter and the LIS. Numerical results show that the proposed PBIT system, especially with the optimized passive beamforming, significantly outperforms the system without LIS enhancement. Furthermore, a tradeoff between the passive-beamforming gain and the information rate of the LIS has been demonstrated.

Super-Resolution Blind Channel-and-Signal Estimation for Massive MIMO with One-Dimensional Antenna Array

In this paper, we study blind channel-and-signal estimation by exploiting the burst-sparse structure of angular-domain propagation channels in massive MIMO systems. The state-of-the-art approach utilizes the structured channel sparsity by sampling the angular-domain channel representation with a uniform angle-sampling grid, a.k.a. virtual channel representation. However, this approach is only applicable to uniform linear arrays and may cause a substantial performance loss due to the mismatch between the virtual representation and the true angle information. To tackle these challenges, we propose a sparse channel representation with a super-resolution sampling grid and a hidden Markovian support. Based on this, we develop a novel approximate inference based blind estimation algorithm to estimate the channel and the user signals simultaneously, with emphasis on the adoption of the expectation-maximization method to learn the angle information. Furthermore, we demonstrate the low-complexity implementation of our algorithm, making use of factor graph and message passing principles to compute the marginal posteriors. Numerical results show that our proposed method significantly reduces the estimation error compared to the state-of-the-art approach under various settings, which verifies the efficiency and robustness of our method.

Energy Efficiency Maximization for Full-Duplex UAV Secrecy Communication

This letter proposes a new full-duplex (FD) secrecy communication scheme for the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and investigates its optimal design to achieve the maximum energy efficiency (EE) of the UAV. Specifically, the UAV receives the confidential information from a ground source and meanwhile sends jamming signals to interfere with a potential ground eavesdropper. As the UAV has limited on-board energy in practice, we aim to maximize the EE for its secrecy communication, by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory and the source/UAV transmit/jamming powers over a finite flight period with given initial and final locations. Although the problem is difficult to solve, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm to obtain its suboptimal solution. Simulation results show that the proposed joint design can significantly improve the EE of UAV secrecy communication, as compared to various benchmark schemes.

Semi-Blind Channel-and-Signal Estimation for Uplink Massive MIMO With Channel Sparsity

This paper considers the transceiver design for uplink massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with channel sparsity in the angular domain. Recent progress has shown that sparsity-learning-based blind signal detection is able to retrieve the channel and data by using massage-passing based sparse matrix factorization methods. Short pilots sequences are inserted into user packets to eliminate the so-called phase and permutation ambiguities inherent in sparse matrix factorization. In this paper, to exploit the knowledge of these short pilot sequences more efficiently, we propose a semi-blind channel-and-signal estimation (SCSE) scheme in which the knowledge of the pilot sequences are integrated into the message passing algorithm for sparse matrix factorization. The SCSE algorithm involves enumeration over all possible user permutations, and so is time-consuming when the number of users is relatively large. To reduce complexity, we further develop the simplified SCSE (S-SCSE) to accommodate systems with a large number of users. We show that our semi-blind signal detection scheme substantially outperforms the state-of-the-art blind detection and training-based schemes in the short-pilot regime.

Joint Base Station Activation and Coordinated Downlink Beamforming for HetNets: Efficient Optimal and Suboptimal Algorithms

In cellular heterogeneous networks (HetNets), a number of distributed base stations cooperatively provide services to multiple mobile users. This paper addresses joint base-station activation and coordinated beamforming design for downlink transmission in HetNets. To this end, a mixed integer program is formulated to optimize the total power consumption of a HetNet. A novel approach based on Benders' decomposition is then put forth to obtain the optimal solution for the problem of interest with guaranteed convergence. Building on our new formulation, a dual-subgradient algorithm is also proposed to find an approximate solution in polynomial time. The proposed approaches can be generalized to more general setups, including robust beamforming designs under channel uncertainty, and coordinated beamforming for multi-cell scenarios.

Structured Turbo Compressed Sensing for Downlink Massive MIMO-OFDM Channel Estimation

Compressed sensing has been employed to reduce the pilot overhead for channel estimation in wireless communication systems. Particularly, structured turbo compressed sensing (STCS) provides a generic framework for structured sparse signal recovery with reduced computational complexity and storage requirement. In this paper, we consider the problem of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) channel estimation in a frequency division duplexing (FDD) downlink system. By exploiting the structured sparsity in the angle-frequency domain (AFD) and angle-delay domain (ADD) of the massive MIMO-OFDM channel, we represent the channel by using AFD and ADD probability models and design message-passing based channel estimators under the STCS framework. Several STCS-based algorithms are proposed for massive MIMO-OFDM channel estimation by exploiting the structured sparsity. We show that, compared with other existing algorithms, the proposed algorithms have a much faster convergence speed and achieve competitive error performance under a wide range of simulation settings.

CNN-Based Signal Detection for Banded Linear Systems

Banded linear systems arise in many communication scenarios, e.g., those involving inter-carrier interference and inter-symbol interference. Motivated by recent advances in deep learning, we propose to design a high-accuracy low-complexity signal detector for banded linear systems based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). We develop a novel CNN-based detector by utilizing the banded structure of the channel matrix. Specifically, the proposed CNN-based detector consists of three modules: the input preprocessing module, the CNN module, and the output postprocessing module. With such an architecture, the proposed CNN-based detector is adaptive to different system sizes, and can overcome the curse of dimensionality, which is a ubiquitous challenge in deep learning. Through extensive numerical experiments, we demonstrate that the proposed CNN-based detector outperforms conventional deep neural networks and existing model-based detectors in both accuracy and computational time. Moreover, we show that CNN is flexible for systems with large sizes or wide bands. We also show that the proposed CNN-based detector can be easily extended to near-banded systems such as doubly selective orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems and 2-D magnetic recording (TDMR) systems, in which the channel matrices do not have a strictly banded structure.

This article illustrates the great potential of machine learning techniques in solving these challenges. In particular, we show how to utilize graphical representations of H-UDNs to design efficient machine learning algorithms.

Capacity of the Gaussian Two-Pair Two-Way Relay Channel to Within 1/2 Bit

This paper studies the transceiver design of the Gaussian two-pair two-way relay channel (TWRC), where two pairs of users exchange information through a common relay in a pairwise manner. Our main contribution is to show that the capacity of the Gaussian two-pair TWRC is achievable to within 1/2 bit for arbitrary channel conditions. In the proof, we develop a hybrid coding scheme involving Gaussian random coding, nested lattice coding, superposition coding, and network-coded decoding. Further, we present a message-reassembling strategy to decouple the coding design for the user-to-relay and relay-to-user links, so as to provide flexibility to fully exploit the channel randomness. Finally, judicious power allocation at the relay is necessary to approach the channel capacity under various channel conditions.
