Probabilistic Stellar Age Estimation for Gaia XP Stars with NGBoost

Stellar age is a fundamental quantity for Galactic archaeology, but reliable age estimation for large stellar samples remains challenging. In this work, we develop an uncertainty aware NGBoost framework for stellar age estimation using Gaia XP-derived atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances. Different from the standard NGBoost model, we modify the loss function by incorporating the uncertainties of the training age labels. We further use a Monte Carlo strategy to quantify the influence of input-feature uncertainties on the predicted ages. The resulting model provides age estimates together with uncertainty estimates. Applying this framework to Gaia XP stars, we construct a stellar age catalog containing 15,175,107 stars.

Constraints on the $^{12}$C$(α, γ)^{16}$O and $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O Reaction Rates from Binary Black Holes Detected via Gravitational Wave Signals

Gravitational-wave observations of binary black hole (BH) mergers provide a novel avenue for testing massive-star evolution and the resulting BH mass spectrum. Recent population analyses under the hierarchical-merger hypothesis have offered evidence for the BH mass gap and inferred its lower edge to $\sim 44 - 68$ M$_\odot$. Motivated by these findings, we compute low-metallicity ($Z=10^{-5}$) helium star models with MESA and systematically explore the effect of uncertainties in the $^{12}$C$(α, γ)^{16}$O and $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O reaction rates on the final fate. Varying the $^{12}$C$(α, γ)^{16}$O reaction rate by $-3 σ$ to $+3σ$, we find that the predicted BH mass gap shifts from $\sim104 - 184$ M$_\odot$ to $\sim45 - 135$ M$_\odot$. In contrast, scaling the $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O reaction rate by global factors of 0.1, 1, and 10 has only a modest effect on the lower edge of the BH mass gap (less than 5 M$_\odot$), and shifts the upper edge by more than 10 M$_\odot$. Using the predictions of our models together with the literature estimates for the lower edge of the BH mass gap, we constrain the astrophysical S factor of $^{12}$C$(α, γ)^{16}$O reaction at 300 keV of $S_{300} \simeq$ 137.6 - 263.4 keV barn.

A Catalog of 486 Barium Stars Identified in GALAH DR4

We present a catalog of 486 Ba stars identified in the GALAH DR4 survey using high-resolution spectra and precise abundance measurements. The sample was selected based on s-process enrichment criteria involving the abundances of Ba and La relative to Eu, and further refined using the signed-distance method, resulting in the largest sample of Ba stars to date, including five newly identified Ba dwarfs. Using astrometric and kinematic parameters from Gaia DR3 and StarHorse, we derived the Galactic velocity components for 367 Ba stars and found that most belong to the thin or thick disk, while 18 exhibit halo-like kinematics. Chemical abundance analysis suggests that most Ba stars are of in situ origin, whereas two stars (4077588766331013248 and 6692980582560946304) display signatures of accreted populations. The E-Lz diagram further shows that star 4077588766331013248 lies within the region of substructure ED-8. The observed decline of [Ba/Fe] and [La/Fe] with increasing metallicity implies that s-process elements originate from nucleosynthetic sites distinct from those of iron-peak elements, while the decreasing [hs/ls] ratio toward higher metallicity indicates higher neutron capture efficiency at lower metallicity. Both giant and dwarf Ba stars-except for 6053735173729807872-are confirmed binaries hosting white dwarf companions. Moreover, we estimated the masses of the former asymptotic giant branch (AGB) companions to these Ba stars based on the good agreement between the FRUITY AGB model predictions and their observed abundance patterns.

Chasing the formation history of the Galactic metal-poor disc

In our previous work, we identified $\sim100,000$ metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] $<$ -1.0) from the LAMOST Survey. This work estimates their chemical abundances and explores the origin and evolution of the Galactic metal-poor disc. Our chemo-dynamical analysis reveals four main populations within the metal-poor disc: (1) a primordial disc older than 12 Gyr with [Fe/H] $>$ -1.5; (2) debris stars from the progenitor galaxy of Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus (GSE), but now residing in the Galactic disc; (3) the metal-poor tail of the metal-rich, high-$α$ disc formed 10-12 Gyr ago, with metallicity lower limit extending to -2.0; (4) the metal-poor tail of the metal-rich, low-$α$ disc younger than 8 Gyr, reaching a lower metallicity limit of -1.8. These results reveal the presence of a primordial disc and show that both high-$α$ and low-$α$ discs reach lower metallicities than previously thought. Analysis of merger debris reveals that Wukong, with extremely low metallicity, likely originate from merger events distinct from GSE. Additionally, three new substructures are identified: ShangGu-1, characterized by unusual [Fe/H]-eccentricity correlations; ShangGu-2, possibly heated disc stars; and ShangGu-3, which can be divided into four subgroups based on differing orbital directions, with two aligning with the previously known Nyx and Nyx-2.
