Beyond Direct Answering: Aligning Educational LLMs as Socratic Guides via Heuristic Reinforcement Learning

Large language models (LLMs) deployed in educational settings often behave as direct answerers: they disclose target concepts in the opening turn instead of guiding students through progressive inquiry, as Socratic pedagogy prescribes. We present HeuristicEdu, a two-phase pipeline that aligns Qwen2.5-7B toward Socratic tutoring via supervised warm-up and Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO). Training uses SocraticEdu, 797 multi-turn Chinese children's science dialogues reconstructed from a live platform, with a heuristic reward over cognitive depth (R_cog), curiosity engagement (R_eng), and directness (R_dir), together with a K_query correction for student-introduced terms. We introduce Scaffolding Effectiveness (SE) and Conversation Depth (CD) to evaluate outcomes beyond surface fluency. On 30 held-out questions, the best GRPO variant improves SE from 30.0% to 63.3% and lowers keyword leakage from 30.0% to 13.3%. Notably, this best variant omits the directness penalty during optimization, suggesting that explicit anti-leakage terms can conflict with gradient-based behavioral alignment. An unaligned Qwen-72B baseline reaches 0% SE and 96.7% leakage, showing that scale alone does not induce Socratic behavior.

Toward Anthropomorphic Dialogue: A Closed-Loop Framework for Human-Like Chat Generation, Evaluation, and Preference Alignment

Human-like private chat requires more than fluent response generation: a system must preserve persona, relationship, memory, bounded knowledge, medium-specific timing, and a coherent multi-turn arc. We present AnthroDial, a closed-loop framework that formulates anthropomorphic dialogue as a joint problem of system architecture, executable evaluation, and diagnostic alignment. It combines (1) a role-conditioned scheduled dialogue runtime with persona and scenario cards, long-term memory, virtual time, and single-draft message decisions; (2) an executable benchmark with an L0 validity gate, five per-turn dimensions, and five dialogue-level dimensions; and (3) a post-training pipeline that filters 16,436 scheduled-decision examples for SFT and applies GRPO with a cognitive-diagnostic, ZPD-aware reward. The reward maintains Kalman-filtered capability estimates for each behavioral dimension, upweights dimensions with larger capability deficits, and uses rollout scores as task-level ZPD matches to focus optimization on learnable weak skills. On a benchmark with 55 personas, 50 scenarios, 50 persona-scenario bindings, and 100 role-conditioned cases per model, we evaluate 16 systems spanning frontier baselines, open models, thinking/no-think variants, and SFT/RL ablations. The strongest non-trained baseline reaches 32.00% strict ACC, while Qwen3.6-27B-SFT+RL reaches 39.00% strict ACC and a 98.5 overall score. In the 9B no-think setting, SFT and RL improve strict ACC from 0.00% to 13.00% and 18.37%. These results show that anthropomorphic dialogue benefits when generation, evaluation, and reward shaping share the same behavioral dimensions.

Application-Driven Pedagogical Knowledge Optimization of Open-Source LLMs via Reinforcement Learning and Supervised Fine-Tuning

We present an innovative multi-stage optimization strategy combining reinforcement learning (RL) and supervised fine-tuning (SFT) to enhance the pedagogical knowledge of large language models (LLMs), as illustrated by EduQwen 32B-RL1, EduQwen 32B-SFT, and an optional third-stage model EduQwen 32B-SFT-RL2: (1) RL optimization that implements progressive difficulty training, focuses on challenging examples, and employs extended reasoning rollouts; (2) a subsequent SFT phase that leverages the RL-trained model to synthesize high-quality training data with difficulty-weighted sampling; and (3) an optional second round of RL optimization. EduQwen 32B-RL1, EduQwen 32B-SFT, and EduQwen 32B-SFT-RL2 are an application-driven family of open-source pedagogical LLMs built on a dense Qwen3-32B backbone. These models remarkably achieve high enough accuracy on the Cross-Domain Pedagogical Knowledge (CDPK) Benchmark to establish new state-of-the-art (SOTA) results across the interactive Pedagogy Benchmark Leaderboard and surpass significantly larger proprietary systems such as the previous benchmark leader Gemini-3 Pro. These dense 32-billion-parameter models demonstrate that domain-specialized optimization can transform mid-sized open-source LLMs into true pedagogical domain experts that outperform much larger general-purpose systems, while preserving the transparency, customizability, and cost-efficiency required for responsible educational AI deployment.

Skywork UniPic: Unified Autoregressive Modeling for Visual Understanding and Generation

We introduce Skywork UniPic, a 1.5 billion-parameter autoregressive model that unifies image understanding, text-to-image generation, and image editing within a single architecture-eliminating the need for task-specific adapters or inter-module connectors-and demonstrate that compact multimodal systems can achieve state-of-the-art performance on commodity hardware. Skywork UniPic achieves a GenEval score of 0.86, surpassing most existing unified models; sets a new DPG-Bench complex-generation record of 85.5; attains 5.83 on GEditBench-EN and 3.49 on ImgEdit-Bench for image editing; and generates 1024 x 1024 images with under 15 GB of GPU memory (e.g., RTX 4090). (1) a decoupled encoding strategy that leverages a masked autoregressive encoder for synthesis and a SigLIP2 encoder for understanding, all feeding a shared autoregressive decoder; (2) a progressive, resolution-aware training schedule scaling from 256 x 256 to 1024 x 1024 while dynamically unfreezing parameters to balance capacity and stability; and (3) meticulously curated, 100 million-scale datasets augmented with task-specific reward models to refine generation and editing objectives. By demonstrating that high-fidelity multimodal integration need not incur prohibitive resource demands, Skywork UniPic establishes a practical paradigm for deployable, high-fidelity multimodal AI. CSVQA: A Chinese Multimodal Benchmark for Evaluating STEM Reasoning Capabilities of VLMs

Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have demonstrated remarkable progress in multimodal understanding, yet their capabilities for scientific reasoning remain inadequately assessed. Current multimodal benchmarks predominantly evaluate generic image comprehension or text-driven reasoning, lacking authentic scientific contexts that require domain-specific knowledge integration with visual evidence analysis. To fill this gap, we present CSVQA, a diagnostic multimodal benchmark specifically designed for evaluating scientific reasoning through domain-grounded visual question answering. Our benchmark features 1,378 carefully constructed question-answer pairs spanning diverse STEM disciplines, each demanding domain knowledge, integration of visual evidence, and higher-order reasoning. Compared to prior multimodal benchmarks, CSVQA places greater emphasis on real-world scientific content and complex reasoning. We additionally propose a rigorous evaluation protocol to systematically assess whether model predictions are substantiated by valid intermediate reasoning steps based on curated explanations. Our comprehensive evaluation of 15 VLMs on this benchmark reveals notable performance disparities, as even the top-ranked proprietary model attains only 49.6% accuracy. This empirical evidence underscores the pressing need for advancing scientific reasoning capabilities in VLMs. Our CSVQA is released at https://huggingface.co/datasets/Skywork/CSVQA

Synergistic control of radical generation in a radio frequency atmospheric pressure plasma jet via voltage waveform tailoring and structured electrodes

The synergy between voltage waveform tailoring and structured electrodes is investigated in a radio-frequency (RF) atmospheric-pressure microplasma jet operated in helium with a 0.1% oxygen admixture. The device incorporates rectangular trenches in both electrodes and is driven by "Peaks" and "Valleys" waveforms synthesized from four harmonics (base frequency $f_{\rm b} = 13.56$~MHz, $V_{\rm pp} = 500$~V, $P=$1.2~W). Two-dimensional plasma fluid simulations, together with spatially and temporally resolved optical diagnostics (Phase-Resolved Optical Emission Spectroscopy and Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy), are used to demonstrate that the combination of asymmetric voltage waveforms with electrode structuring leads to strong spatial localization of electron power absorption and radical generation. This synergy results in a single pronounced maximum inside a trench at either the powered or grounded electrode, depending on the applied waveform, unlike a symmetric excitation, which produces a spatially symmetric enhancement at both electrodes. The effect is attributed to the interplay between waveform-induced sheath dynamics and geometric focusing provided by the trenches, enabling electrically reversible and selective enhancement of electron power absorption at a chosen location.

Skywork R1V: Pioneering Multimodal Reasoning with Chain-of-Thought

We introduce Skywork R1V, a multimodal reasoning model extending the an R1-series Large language models (LLM) to visual modalities via an efficient multimodal transfer method. Leveraging a lightweight visual projector, Skywork R1V facilitates seamless multimodal adaptation without necessitating retraining of either the foundational language model or the vision encoder. To strengthen visual-text alignment, we propose a hybrid optimization strategy that combines Iterative Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) with Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO), significantly enhancing cross-modal integration efficiency. Additionally, we introduce an adaptive-length Chain-of-Thought distillation approach for reasoning data generation. This approach dynamically optimizes reasoning chain lengths, thereby enhancing inference efficiency and preventing excessive reasoning overthinking. Empirical evaluations demonstrate that Skywork R1V, with only 38B parameters, delivers competitive performance, achieving a score of 69.0 on the MMMU benchmark and 67.5 on MathVista. Meanwhile, it maintains robust textual reasoning performance, evidenced by impressive scores of 72.0 on AIME and 94.0 on MATH500. The Skywork R1V model weights have been publicly released to promote openness and reproducibility.

Skywork-VL Reward: An Effective Reward Model for Multimodal Understanding and Reasoning

We propose Skywork-VL Reward, a multimodal reward model that provides reward signals for both multimodal understanding and reasoning tasks. Our technical approach comprises two key components: First, we construct a large-scale multimodal preference dataset that covers a wide range of tasks and scenarios, with responses collected from both standard vision-language models (VLMs) and advanced VLM reasoners. Second, we design a reward model architecture based on Qwen2.5-VL-7B-Instruct, integrating a reward head and applying multi-stage fine-tuning using pairwise ranking loss on pairwise preference data. Experimental evaluations show that Skywork-VL Reward achieves state-of-the-art results on multimodal VL-RewardBench and exhibits competitive performance on the text-only RewardBench benchmark. Furthermore, preference data constructed based on our Skywork-VL Reward proves highly effective for training Mixed Preference Optimization (MPO), leading to significant improvements in multimodal reasoning capabilities. Our results underscore Skywork-VL Reward as a significant advancement toward general-purpose, reliable reward models for multimodal alignment. Our model has been publicly released to promote transparency and reproducibility.

Skywork R1V2: Multimodal Hybrid Reinforcement Learning for Reasoning

We present Skywork R1V2, a next-generation multimodal reasoning model and a major leap forward from its predecessor, Skywork R1V. At its core, R1V2 introduces a hybrid reinforcement learning paradigm that jointly leverages the Mixed Preference Optimization (MPO) and the Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO), which harmonizes reward-model guidance with rule-based strategies, thereby addressing the long-standing challenge of balancing sophisticated reasoning capabilities with broad generalization. To further enhance training efficiency, we propose the Selective Sample Buffer (SSB) mechanism, which effectively addresses the vanishing advantages dilemma inherent in GRPO by prioritizing high-value samples throughout the optimization process. Notably, we observe that excessive reinforcement signals can induce visual hallucinations--a phenomenon we systematically monitor and mitigate through calibrated reward thresholds throughout the training process. Empirical results affirm the exceptional capability of R1V2, with benchmark-leading performances such as 62.6 on OlympiadBench, 78.9 on AIME2024, 63.6 on LiveCodeBench, and 73.6 on MMMU. These results underscore R1V2's superiority over existing open-source models and demonstrate significant progress in closing the performance gap with premier proprietary systems, including Gemini 2.5 and OpenAI-o4-mini. The Skywork R1V2 model weights have been publicly released to promote openness and reproducibility https://huggingface.co/Skywork/Skywork-R1V2-38B.

Skywork-MoE: A Deep Dive into Training Techniques for Mixture-of-Experts Language Models

In this technical report, we introduce the training methodologies implemented in the development of Skywork-MoE, a high-performance mixture-of-experts (MoE) large language model (LLM) with 146 billion parameters and 16 experts. It is initialized from the pre-existing dense checkpoints of our Skywork-13B model. We explore the comparative effectiveness of upcycling versus training from scratch initializations. Our findings suggest that the choice between these two approaches should consider both the performance of the existing dense checkpoints and the MoE training budget. We highlight two innovative techniques: gating logit normalization, which improves expert diversification, and adaptive auxiliary loss coefficients, allowing for layer-specific adjustment of auxiliary loss coefficients. Our experimental results validate the effectiveness of these methods. Leveraging these techniques and insights, we trained our upcycled Skywork-MoE on a condensed subset of our SkyPile corpus. The evaluation results demonstrate that our model delivers strong performance across a wide range of benchmarks.

Skywork: A More Open Bilingual Foundation Model

In this technical report, we present Skywork-13B, a family of large language models (LLMs) trained on a corpus of over 3.2 trillion tokens drawn from both English and Chinese texts. This bilingual foundation model is the most extensively trained and openly published LLMs of comparable size to date. We introduce a two-stage training methodology using a segmented corpus, targeting general purpose training and then domain-specific enhancement training, respectively. We show that our model not only excels on popular benchmarks, but also achieves \emph{state of the art} performance in Chinese language modeling on diverse domains. Furthermore, we propose a novel leakage detection method, demonstrating that test data contamination is a pressing issue warranting further investigation by the LLM community. To spur future research, we release Skywork-13B along with checkpoints obtained during intermediate stages of the training process. We are also releasing part of our SkyPile corpus, a collection of over 150 billion tokens of web text, which is the largest high quality open Chinese pre-training corpus to date. We hope Skywork-13B and our open corpus will serve as a valuable open-source resource to democratize access to high-quality LLMs.

Holomorphic sections of line bundles on the jet spaces of the Riemann sphere

Fix a point $t_0$ in the circle $S^1$. The space $J^k(t_0, \mathbb{P}^1)$ of $k$-jets at $t_0$ of $C^{\infty}$ maps from $S^1$ to the Riemann sphere $\mathbb{P}^1$ is a $k+1$ dimensional complex algebraic manifold. We identify a class of holomorphic sections of line bundles on $J^k(t_0, \mathbb{P}^1)$.

Turbulent Details Simulation for SPH Fluids via Vorticity Refinement

A major issue in Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) approaches is the numerical dissipation during the projection process, especially under coarse discretizations. High-frequency details, such as turbulence and vortices, are smoothed out, leading to unrealistic results. To address this issue, we introduce a Vorticity Refinement (VR) solver for SPH fluids with negligible computational overhead. In this method, the numerical dissipation of the vorticity field is recovered by the difference between the theoretical and the actual vorticity, so as to enhance turbulence details. Instead of solving the Biot-Savart integrals, a stream function, which is easier and more efficient to solve, is used to relate the vorticity field to the velocity field. We obtain turbulence effects of different intensity levels by changing an adjustable parameter. Since the vorticity field is enhanced according to the curl field, our method can not only amplify existing vortices, but also capture additional turbulence. Our VR solver is straightforward to implement and can be easily integrated into existing SPH methods.

Robust and customized methods for real-time hand gesture recognition under object-occlusion

Dynamic hand tracking and gesture recognition is a hard task since there are many joints on the fingers and each joint owns many degrees of freedom. Besides, object occlusion is also a thorny issue in finger tracking and posture recognition. Therefore, we propose a robust and customized system for realtime hand tracking and gesture recognition under occlusion environment. First, we model the angles between hand keypoints and encode their relative coordinate vectors, then we introduce GAN to generate raw discrete sequence dataset. Secondly we propose a time series forecasting method in the prediction of defined hand keypoint location. Finally, we define a sliding window matching method to complete gesture recognition. We analyze 11 kinds of typical gestures and show how to perform gesture recognition with the proposed method. Our work can reach state of the art results and contribute to build a framework to implement customized gesture recognition task.
