Robustness Analysis of USmorph: II. Optimizing Feature Extraction, Dimensionality Reduction, and Clustering for Unsupervised Galaxy Morphology Classification

We conduct a systematic robustness analysis of the unsupervised machine learning module within the hybrid framework \texttt{USmorph}. This module automatically discovers morphological structures from large-scale galaxy images, forming the foundation of the complete classification workflow. We evaluate five pre-trained models for feature extraction and identify an ImageNet-pretrained AlexNet as the most effective for capturing discriminative morphological features. UMAP is chosen for dimensionality reduction due to its optimal balance between preserving high-dimensional structure and computational efficiency. To enhance clustering stability, we propose a Bagging-based multi-cluster voting scheme, which significantly improves label consistency and cluster purity. We compare the convergence, scalability, and quality of five clustering algorithms, finding that the Bagging voting scheme has the best performance with the combination of K-means, Birch, and Agg. A bagging clustering number of $K=16$ is used to achieve the optimal balance between classification granularity and manual validation efficiency. Our tests show that: (1) the t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) reveals clear, compact cluster boundaries in low-dimensional space with strong feature separability; (2) the morphology classification results align with galaxy evolution theory, showing physically plausible distributions of different types in parameter space. These results demonstrate the technical robustness and scientific credibility of \texttt{USmorph}, establishing it as a reliable method for automated morphological classification in future large-scale surveys such as the China Space Station Telescope (CSST) mission.

A robust morphological classification method for galaxies using dual-encoding contrastive learning and multi-clustering voting on JWST/NIRCam images

The two-step galaxy morphology classification framework {\tt USmorph} successfully combines unsupervised machine learning (UML) with supervised machine learning (SML) methods. To enhance the UML step, we employed a dual-encoder architecture (ConvNeXt and ViT) to effectively encode images, contrastive learning to accurately extract features, and principal component analysis to efficiently reduce dimensionality. Based on this improved framework, a sample of 46,176 galaxies at $0 10^9 M_\odot$) to verify the validity of our galaxy morphological classification system. The analysis of morphological parameters is consistent with our classification system: SPH and ETD galaxies with higher $n$, $G$, and $C$ tend to be more bulge-dominated and more compact compared with other types of galaxies. This demonstrates the reliability of this classification system, which will be useful for a forthcoming large-sky survey from the Chinese Space Station Telescope.

Non-Markovian dynamics of mixed-state geometric phase of dissipative qubits

We investigate the geometric phase of a two-level atom (qubit) coupled to a bosonic reservoir with Lorentzian spectral density, and find that for the non-Markovian dynamics in which rotating-wave approximation (RWA) is performed, geometric phase has a $π$-phase jump at the nodal point. However, the exact result without RWA given by hierarchy equation of motion method shows that there is no such a phase jump or nodal structure in geometric phase. Thus our results demonstrate that the counter-rotating terms significantly contribute to the geometric phase in multi-mode Hamiltonian under certain circumstances.

Spin Squeezing under Non-Markovian Channels by Hierarchy Equation Method

We study spin squeezing under non-Markovian channels, and consider an ensemble of $N$ independent spin-1/2 particles with exchange symmetry. Each spin interacts with its own bath, and the baths are independent and identical. For this kind of open system, the spin squeezing under decoherence can be investigated from the dynamics of the local expectations, and the multi-qubit dynamics can be reduced into the two-qubit one. The reduced dynamics is obtained by the hierarchy equation method, which is a exact without rotating-wave and Born-Markov approximation. The numerical results show that the spin squeezing displays multiple sudden vanishing and revival with lower bath temperature, and it can also vanish asymptotically.

Spin squeezing and concurrence

We study the relations between spin squeezing and concurrence, and find that they are qualitatively equivalent for an ensemble of spin-1/2 particles with exchange symmetry and parity, if we adopt the spin squeezing criterion given by the recent work (G. Toth et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 250405 (2007)). This suggests that the spin squeezing has more intimate relations with pairwise entanglement. We exemplify the result by considering a superposition of two Dicke states.
