An Overview of Cellular ISAC for Low-Altitude UAV: New Opportunities and Challenges

Low-altitude unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are expected to play an important role in future wireless networks, either as aerial base stations (BSs) or aerial users connected to the cellular network. In addition, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been identified as one of the six usage scenarios for the forthcoming sixth-generation (6G) mobile networks, aimed at improving network functionalities and realizing situational awareness of the physical world. While most existing research efforts focus on terrestrial two-dimensional (2D) communication and sensing, UAV as an aerial platform offers a new degree of freedom for designing three-dimensional (3D) air-ground (AG) ISAC networks. In this article, we provide an overview of cellular-connected UAV ISAC, by elaborating the UAV's roles as a target to be sensed and as an aerial anchor to provide sensing functionality, respectively. In particular, we pay attention to the network coverage issue and topics specific to UAV networking, emphasizing the new opportunities as well as unique challenges to be addressed.

Generating CKM Using Others' Data: Cross-AP CKM Inference with Deep Learning

Channel knowledge map (CKM) is a promising paradigm shift towards environment-aware communication and sensing by providing location-specific prior channel knowledge before real-time communication. Although CKM is particularly appealing for dense networks such as cell-free networks, it remains a challenge to efficiently generate CKMs in dense networks. For a dense network with CKMs of existing access points (APs), it will be useful to efficiently generate CKMs of potentially new APs with only AP location information. The generation of inferred CKMs across APs can help dense networks achieve convenient initial CKM generation, environment-aware AP deployment, and cost-effective CKM updates. Considering that different APs in the same region share the same physical environment, there exists a natural correlation between the channel knowledge of different APs. Therefore, by mining the implicit correlation between location-specific channel knowledge, cross-AP CKM inference can be realized using data from other APs. This paper proposes a cross-AP inference method to generate CKMs of potentially new APs with deep learning. The location of the target AP is fed into the UNet model in combination with the channel knowledge of other existing APs, and supervised learning is performed based on the channel knowledge of the target AP. Based on the trained UNet and the channel knowledge of the existing APs, the CKM inference of the potentially new AP can be generated across APs. The generation results of the inferred CKM validate the feasibility and effectiveness of cross-AP CKM inference with other APs' channel knowledge.

Deep Learning-Based CKM Construction with Image Super-Resolution

Channel knowledge map (CKM) is a novel technique for achieving environment awareness, and thereby improving the communication and sensing performance for wireless systems. A fundamental problem associated with CKM is how to construct a complete CKM that provides channel knowledge for a large number of locations based solely on sparse data measurements. This problem bears similarities to the super-resolution (SR) problem in image processing. In this letter, we propose an effective deep learning-based CKM construction method that leverages the image SR network known as SRResNet. Unlike most existing studies, our approach does not require any additional input beyond the sparsely measured data. In addition to the conventional path loss map construction, our approach can also be applied to construct channel angle maps (CAMs), thanks to the use of a new dataset called CKMImageNet. The numerical results demonstrate that our method outperforms interpolation-based methods such as nearest neighbour and bicubic interpolation, as well as the SRGAN method in CKM construction. Furthermore, only 1/16 of the locations need to be measured in order to achieve a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.1 dB in path loss.

Channel Knowledge Map for Cellular-Connected UAV via Binary Bayesian Filtering

Channel knowledge map (CKM) is a promising technology to enable environment-aware wireless communications and sensing. Link state map (LSM) is one particular type of CKM that aims to learn the location-specific line-of-sight (LoS) link probability between the transmitter and the receiver at all possible locations, which provides the prior information to enhance the communication quality of dynamic networks. This paper investigates the LSM construction for cellularconnected unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) by utilizing both the expert empirical mathematical model and the measurement data. Specifically, we first model the LSM as a binary spatial random field and its initial distribution is obtained by the empirical model. Then we propose an effective binary Bayesian filter to sequentially update the LSM by using the channel measurement. To efficiently update the LSM, we establish the spatial correlation models of LoS probability on the location pairs in both the distance and angular domains, which are adopted in the Bayesian filter for updating the probabilities at locations without measurements. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for LSM construction, which significantly outperforms the benchmark scheme, especially when the measurements are sparse.

Efficient Channel Estimation for Millimeter Wave and Terahertz Systems Enabled by Integrated Super-resolution Sensing and Communication

Integrated super-resolution sensing and communication (ISSAC) has emerged as a promising technology to achieve extremely high precision sensing for those key parameters, such as the angles of the sensing targets. In this paper, we propose an efficient channel estimation scheme enabled by ISSAC for millimeter wave (mmWave) and TeraHertz (THz) systems with a hybrid analog/digital beamforming architecture, where both the pilot overhead and the cost of radio frequency (RF) chains are significantly reduced. The key idea is to exploit the fact that subspace-based super-resolution algorithms such as multiple signal classification (MUSIC) can estimate channel parameters accurately without requiring dedicate a priori known pilots. In particular, the proposed method consists of two stages. First, the angles of the multi-path channel components are estimated in a pilot-free manner during the transmission of data symbols. Second, the multi-path channel coefficients are estimated with very few pilots. Compared to conventional channel estimation schemes that rely solely on channel training, our approach requires the estimation of much fewer parameters in the second stage. Furthermore, with channel multi-path angles obtained, the beamforming gain can be achieved when pilots are sent to estimate the channel path gains. To comprehensively investigate the performance of the proposed scheme, we consider both the basic line-of-sight (LoS) channels and more general multi-path channels. We compare the performance of the minimum mean square error (MMSE) of channel estimation and the resulting beamforming gains of our proposed scheme with the traditional scheme that rely exclusively on channel training. It is demonstrated that our proposed method significantly outperforms the benchmarking scheme. Simulation results are presented to validate our theoretical findings.

Performance Analysis of Hybrid Cellular and Cell-free MIMO Network

Cell-free wireless communication is envisioned as one of the most promising network architectures, which can achieve stable and uniform communication performance while improving the system energy and spectrum efficiency. The deployment of cell-free networks is envisioned to be a longterm evolutionary process, in which cell-free access points (APs) will be gradually introduced into the communication network and collaborate with the existing cellular base stations (BSs). To further explore the performance limits of hybrid cellular and cell-free networks, this paper develops a hybrid network model based on stochastic geometric toolkits, which reveals the coupling of the signal and interference from both the cellular and cell-free networks. Specifically, the conjugate beamforming is applied in hybrid cellular and cell-free networks, which enables user equipment (UE) to benefit from both cellular BSs and cell-free APs. The aggregate signal received from the hybrid network is approximated via moment matching, and coverage probability is characterized by deriving the Laplace transform of the interference. The analysis of signal strength and coverage probability is verified by extensive simulations.

Environment-aware UAV Communications: CKM Construction and Predictive Beamforming

Predictive millimeter-wave (mmWave) beamforming is a promising technique to enable low-latency and high-rate ground-air communications for cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). However, the high vulnerability of mmWave to blockages poses practical challenges to the implementation of such a technology. In this paper, we tackle the challenges by proposing a channel knowledge map (CKM)-assisted predictive beamforming approach based on the echoed joint communication and sensing signal, whereby the line-of-sight (LoS) link identification is performed via hypothesis testing using prior information provided by CKM. Depending on the identification result, extended Kalman filtering (EKF) is adopted to reliably track the target UAV. Furthermore, if the non-line-of-sight (NLoS) state is identified, the target UAV will be immediately connected to a candidate base station (BS), namely a handover will be triggered to alleviate the communication outage. The simulation results show that the proposed method can significantly enhance the UAV tracking and mmWave communication performance compared to the benchmarking schemes without using CKM or LoS identification.

Little Pilot is Needed for Channel Estimation with Integrated Super-Resolution Sensing and Communication

Integrated super-resolution sensing and communication (ISSAC) is a promising technology to achieve extremely high sensing performance for critical parameters, such as the angles of the wireless channels. In this paper, we propose an ISSAC-based channel estimation method, which requires little or even no pilot, yet still achieves accurate channel state information (CSI) estimation. The key idea is to exploit the fact that subspace-based super-resolution algorithms such as multiple signal classification (MUSIC) do not require a priori known pilots for accurate parameter estimation. Therefore, in the proposed method, the angles of the multi-path channel components are first estimated in a pilot-free manner while communication data symbols are sent. After that, the multi-path channel coefficients are estimated, where very little pilots are needed. The reasons are two folds. First, compared to the conventional channel estimation methods purely relying on channel training, much fewer parameters need to be estimated once the multi-path angles are accurately estimated. Besides, with angles obtained, the beamforming gain is also enjoyed when pilots are sent to estimate the channel path gains. To rigorously study the performance of the proposed method, we first consider the basic line-of-sight (LoS) channel. By analyzing the minimum mean square error (MMSE) of channel estimation and the resulting beamforming gains, we show that our proposed method significantly outperforms the conventional methods purely based on channel training. We then extend the study to the more general multipath channels. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate our theoretical results.

A Tutorial on Environment-Aware Communications via Channel Knowledge Map for 6G

Sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication networks are expected to have dense infrastructures, large antenna size, wide bandwidth, cost-effective hardware, diversified positioning methods, and enhanced intelligence. Such trends bring both new challenges and opportunities for the practical design of 6G. On one hand, acquiring channel state information (CSI) in real time for all wireless links becomes quite challenging in 6G. On the other hand, there would be numerous data sources in 6G containing high-quality location-tagged channel data, e.g., the estimated channels or beams between base station (BS) and user equipment (UE), making it possible to better learn the local wireless environment. By exploiting this new opportunity and for tackling the CSI acquisition challenge, there is a promising paradigm shift from the conventional environment-unaware communications to the new environment-aware communications based on the novel approach of channel knowledge map (CKM). This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview on environment-aware communications enabled by CKM to fully harness its benefits for 6G. First, the basic concept of CKM is presented, followed by the comparison of CKM with various existing channel inference techniques. Next, the main techniques for CKM construction are discussed, including both environment model-free and environment model-assisted approaches. Furthermore, a general framework is presented for the utilization of CKM to achieve environment-aware communications, followed by some typical CKM-aided communication scenarios. Finally, important open problems in CKM research are highlighted and potential solutions are discussed to inspire future work.

How Much Data is Needed for Channel Knowledge Map Construction?

Channel knowledge map (CKM) has been recently proposed to enable environment-aware communications by utilizing historical or simulation generated wireless channel data. This paper studies the construction of one particular type of CKM, namely channel gain map (CGM), by using a finite number of measurements or simulation-generated data, with model-based spatial channel prediction. We try to answer the following question: How much data is sufficient for CKM construction? To this end, we first derive the average mean square error (AMSE) of the channel gain prediction as a function of the sample density of data collection for offline CGM construction, as well as the number of data points used for online spatial channel gain prediction. To model the spatial variation of the wireless environment even within each cell, we divide the CGM into subregions and estimate the channel parameters from the local data within each subregion. The parameter estimation error and the channel prediction error based on estimated channel parameters are derived as functions of the number of data points within the subregion. The analytical results provide useful guide for CGM construction and utilization by determining the required spatial sample density for offline data collection and number of data points to be used for online channel prediction, so that the desired level of channel prediction accuracy is guaranteed.

Achievable Rate Region and Path-Based Beamforming for Multi-User Single-Carrier Delay Alignment Modulation

Delay alignment modulation (DAM) is a novel wideband transmission technique for mmWave massive MIMO systems, which exploits the high spatial resolution and multi-path sparsity to mitigate ISI, without relying on channel equalization or multi-carrier transmission. In particular, DAM leverages the delay pre-compensation and path-based beamforming to effectively align the multi-path components, thus achieving the constructive multi-path combination for eliminating the ISI while preserving the multi-path power gain. Different from the existing works only considering single-user DAM, this paper investigates the DAM technique for multi-user mmWave massive MIMO communication. First, we consider the asymptotic regime when the number of antennas Mt at BS is sufficiently large. It is shown that by employing the simple delay pre-compensation and per-path-based MRT beamforming, the single-carrier DAM is able to perfectly eliminate both ISI and IUI. Next, we consider the general scenario with Mt being finite. In this scenario, we characterize the achievable rate region of the multi-user DAM system by finding its Pareto boundary. Specifically, we formulate a rate-profile-constrained sum rate maximization problem by optimizing the per-path-based beamforming. Furthermore, we present three low-complexity per-path-based beamforming strategies based on the MRT, zero-forcing, and regularized zero-forcing principles, respectively, based on which the achievable sum rates are studied. Finally, we provide simulation results to demonstrate the performance of our proposed strategies as compared to two benchmark schemes based on the strongest-path-based beamforming and the prevalent OFDM, respectively. It is shown that DAM achieves higher spectral efficiency and/or lower peak-to-average-ratio, for systems with high spatial resolution and multi-path diversity.

Impact of Channel Memory on the Data Freshness

In this letter, we investigate the impact of channel memory on the average age of information (AoI) for networks with various packet arrival models under first-come-first-served (FCFS) and preemptive last-generated-first-served (pLGFS) policies over Gilbert-Elliott (GE) erasure channel. For networks with Bernoulli arrival model, we first derive the average AoI under the pLGFS queuing policy, and then characterize the AoI gap between the FCFS and pLGFS policies. For networks with Bernoulli arrival and generate-at-will arrival models, the AoI performances under the FCFS and pLGFS policies are derived explicitly. For networks with periodic arrival model, we derive the closed-form expression for the average AoI under pLGFS over a general GE channel and propose a numerical algorithm for calculating that under FCFS efficiently. It is revealed that for pLGFS policy, the average AoI increases monotonically with channel memory $η$ at $\fracη{1-η}$ over the symmetric GE channel. For FCFS, the average AoI increases even faster due to the queuing delay, with an additional term related to the packet arrival rate.

Single Threshold Packet Scheduling Policy for AoI Minimization in Resource-Constrained Network

This paper investigates the tradeoff between the average age of information (AoI) and the transmission cost for networks with stochastic packet arrival and random erasure channel. Specifically, we model the resource-constrained AoI minimization problem as a constrained Markov decision process (CMDP) and propose a low-complexity single threshold packet scheduling policy for it. The key advantage of the proposed policy is its tractability and convenience for implementation. The AoI distribution and long-term average transmission cost of the proposed policy are derived as closed-form functions of the selected threshold. Furthermore, we show that the proposed policy reduces to the optimal policies under special settings and achieves close-to-optimal performance under general settings.

Surface engineering for cellulose as a boosted Layer-by-Layer assembly: excellent flame retardancy and improved durability with introduction of bio-based "molecular glue"

Layer-by-Layer (LbL) assembly was attractive as a versatile tool to address the flammability of cotton, while the washing fastness of LbL coating stayed an issue. Aiming to tackle this issue, LbL layers consisted of phenylphosphonic acid (PHA) and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was deposited on polydopamine (PDA)-coated cotton. The prepared cotton reached 31.4% of limiting oxygen index (LOI), and extinguished immediately after removing the ignitor. Peak of heat release rate (pHRR) attenuated around 36 % compared with pure cotton. A combined barrier and quenching mechanisms were proposed. Moreover, enhanced washing durability (24.1% of LOI) was achieved even after 50 detergent laundering cycles. A facile, boosted LbL approach with proposed π-π stacking interactions between PDA abundant aromatic structures and benzene ring in PHA from LbL layers, is first to put forward to construct durable efficient flame retardant (FR) cotton. This work attempted to enlighten more thoughts and design for durable FR cotton fabrics.

Towards Environment-Aware 6G Communications via Channel Knowledge Map

This article proposes the concept of channel knowledge map (CKM) as an enabler towards environment-aware wireless communications. CKM is a site-specific database, tagged with the locations of the transmitters and/or receivers, that contains whatever channel-related information useful to enhance environmental-awareness and facilitate or even obviate sophisticated real-time channel state information (CSI) acquisition. Therefore, CKM is expected to play an important role for 6G networks targeting for super high capacity, extremely low latency, and ultra-massive connectivity, by offering potential solutions to practical challenges brought by the drastically increased channel dimensions and training overhead. In this article, the motivations of environmental-awareness enabled by CKM are firstly discussed, followed by the key techniques to build and utilize CKM. In particular, it is highlighted that CKM is especially appealing for four channel types: channels for yet-to-reach locations, channels for non-cooperative nodes, channels with large dimensions, and channels with severe hardware/processing limitations. Two case studies with extensive numerical results are presented to demonstrate the great potential of environment-aware communications enabled by CKM.

Simultaneous Navigation and Radio Mapping for Cellular-Connected UAV with Deep Reinforcement Learning

Cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is a promising technology to unlock the full potential of UAVs in the future. However, how to achieve ubiquitous three-dimensional (3D) communication coverage for the UAVs in the sky is a new challenge. In this paper, we tackle this challenge by a new coverage-aware navigation approach, which exploits the UAV's controllable mobility to design its navigation/trajectory to avoid the cellular BSs' coverage holes while accomplishing their missions. We formulate an UAV trajectory optimization problem to minimize the weighted sum of its mission completion time and expected communication outage duration, and propose a new solution approach based on the technique of deep reinforcement learning (DRL). To further improve the performance, we propose a new framework called simultaneous navigation and radio mapping (SNARM), where the UAV's signal measurement is used not only for training the deep Q network (DQN) directly, but also to create a radio map that is able to predict the outage probabilities at all locations in the area of interest. This thus enables the generation of simulated UAV trajectories and predicting their expected returns, which are then used to further train the DQN via Dyna technique, thus greatly improving the learning efficiency.

Time-Weighted Coverage of Integrated Aerial and Ground Networks for Post-Disaster Communications

In this paper, we propose a new three dimensional (3D) networking architecture with integrated aerial and ground base stations (BSs) for swift post-disaster communication recovery. By exploiting their respective advantages in terms of response time, coverage area, and operational duration, the proposed network is highly heterogeneous, consisting of sustained ground BSs, ground-vehicle mounted BSs, dropping-off BSs and flying BSs. To reflect the importance of swift communication recovery and the dynamics of coverage area in post-disaster scenarios, we propose a new performance metric called ``time-weighted coverage}", which is an integration of the achieved communication coverage area multiplied with a weighting function over time. By choosing different weighting functions, the network deployment can be designed to achieve tradeoffs between the ``swift communication recovery" and ``stable communication coverage". Simulation results show that the proposed integrated aerial and ground network has high implementation flexibility and it can significantly enhance the communication coverage compared with the conventional approaches.

Minimum-Latency FEC Design with Delayed Feedback: Mathematical Modeling and Efficient Algorithms

In this paper, we consider the packet-level forward error correction (FEC) code design, without feedback or with delayed feedback, for achieving the minimum end-to-end latency, i.e., the latency between the time when packet is generated at the source and its \emph{in-order delivery} to the application layer of the destination. We first show that the minimum-latency FEC design problem can be modeled as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), and hence the optimal code construction can be obtained by solving the corresponding POMDP. However, solving the POMDP optimally is in general difficult unless the size is very small. To this end, we propose an efficient heuristic algorithm, namely the majority vote policy, for obtaining a high quality approximate solution. We also derive the tight lower and upper bounds of the optimal state values of this POMDP, based on which a more sophisticated D-step search algorithm is implemented for obtaining near-optimal solutions. The simulation results show that the proposed code designs via solving the POMDP, either with the majority vote policy or the D-step search algorithm, strictly outperform the existing schemes, in both cases, without or with only delayed feedback.
