Tensor gradient flow with quasi-entropy for smectic liquid crystals and discretizations keeping coupled physical constraints

A gradient flow for the concentration and a $2\times 2$ tensor is constructed to describe smectic liquid crystals. The free energy consists of the entropy term and interaction term involving squared second order spatial derivatives. The entropy term incorporates the concentration in the quasi-entropy originally proposed for the tensor only, which is a strictly convex and lower semicontinuous function imposing coupled constraints between the concentration and the tensor. An evolution equation for the boundary normal derivative of the concentration is proposed in addition to the equations for the concentration and the tensor, giving an energy dissipation system. Numerical schemes are designed with emphases on using the entropy term to keep the coupled constraints, and the discretization of the boundary normal derivatives satisfying summation by parts. Existence, uniqueness, energy dissipation and error estimates are established. Numerical results indicate the efficiency and robustness of the scheme. Configurations of defects different from other layer structures are observed.

Transition pathways in Cylinder-Gyroid interface

When two distinct ordered phases contact, the interface may exhibit rich and fascinating structures. Focusing on the Cylinder-Gyroid interface system, transition pathways connecting various interface morphologies are studied armed with the Landau--Brazovskii model. Specifically, minimum energy paths are obtained by computing transition states with the saddle dynamics. We present four primary transition pathways connecting different local minima, representing four different mechanisms of the formation of the Cylinder-Gyroid interface. The connection of Cylinder and Gyroid can be either direct or indirect via Fddd with three different orientations. Under different displacements, each of the four pathways may have the lowest energy.

Defect patterns of two-dimensional nematic liquid crystals in confinement

A two-dimensional or quasi-two-dimensional nematic liquid crystal refers to a surface confined system. When such a system is further confined by external line boundaries or excluded from internal line boundaries, the nematic directors form a deformed texture that may display defect points or defect lines, for which winding numbers can be clearly defined. Here, a particular attention is paid to the case when the liquid crystal molecules prefer to form a boundary nematic texture in parallel to the wall surface (i.e., following the homogeneous boundary condition). A general theory, based on geometric argument, is presented for the relationship between the sum of all winding numbers in the system (the total winding number) and the type of confinement angles and curved segments. The conclusion is validated by comparing the theoretical defect rule with existing nematic textures observed experimentally and theoretically in recent years.

Ultralow Threshold, Single-Mode InGaAs/GaAs Multi-Quantum Disk Nanowire Lasers

We present single-mode nanowire (NW) lasers with ultralow threshold in the near-infrared spectral range. To ensure the single-mode operation, the NW diameter and length are reduced specifically to minimize the longitudinal and transverse modes of the NW cavity. Increased optical losses and reduced gain volume by the dimension reduction are compensated by excellent NW morphology and InGaAs/GaAs multi-quantum disks. At 5 K, a threshold low as 1.6 μJ/cm2 per pulse is achieved with a resulting quality factor exceeding 6400. By further passivating the NW with an AlGaAs shell to suppress surface non-radiative recombination, single-mode lasing operation is obtained with a threshold of only 48 μJ/cm2 per pulse at room temperature with a high characteristic temperature of 223 K and power output of ~ 0.9 μW. These single-mode, ultralow threshold, high power output NW lasers are promising for the development of near-infrared nanoscale coherent light sources for integrated photonic circuits, sensing, and spectroscopy.
