Asymptotic behavior of a nonlocal advection system with two populations

In this paper, we consider a nonlocal advection model for two populations on a bounded domain. The first part of the paper is devoted to the existence and uniqueness of solutions and the associated semi-flow properties. Here we use the notion of solution integrated along the characteristics. Next, by proving segregation property, we construct an energy functional to investigate the asymptotic behavior of the solution. In order to get some compactness of the positive orbit, we use the narrow convergence in the space of Young measures. By using this idea, we get a description of the asymptotic behavior of the solution in the space of Young measures. The last section of the paper is devoted to numerical simulations, which confirm and complement our theoretical results.

On invariant measures and the asymptotic behavior of a stochastic delayed SIRS epidemic model

In this paper, we consider a stochastic epidemic model with time delay and general incidence rate. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of the global positive solution. By using the Krylov-Bogoliubov method, we obtain the existence of invariant measures. Furthermore , we study a special case where the incidence rate is bilinear with distributed time delay. When the basic reproduction number R0 < 1, the analysis of the asymptotic behavior around the disease-free equilibrium E0 is provided while when R0 > 1, we prove that the invariant measure is unique and ergodic. The numerical simulations also validate our analytical results.

Efficient Resource Allocation for On-Demand Mobile-Edge Cloud Computing

Mobile-edge cloud computing is a new paradigm to provide cloud computing capabilities at the edge of pervasive radio access networks in close proximity to mobile users. Aiming at provisioning flexible on-demand mobile-edge cloud service, in this paper we propose a comprehensive framework consisting of a resource-efficient computation offloading mechanism for users and a joint communication and computation (JCC) resource allocation mechanism for network operator. Specifically, we first study the resource-efficient computation offloading problem for a user, in order to reduce user's resource occupation by determining its optimal communication and computation resource profile with minimum resource occupation and meanwhile satisfying the QoS constraint. We then tackle the critical problem of user admission control for JCC resource allocation, in order to properly select the set of users for resource demand satisfaction. We show the admission control problem is NP-hard, and hence develop an efficient approximation solution of a low complexity by carefully designing the user ranking criteria and rigourously derive its performance guarantee. To prevent the manipulation that some users may untruthfully report their valuations in acquiring mobile-edge cloud service, we further resort to the powerful tool of critical value approach to design truthful pricing scheme for JCC resource allocation. Extensive performance evaluation demonstrates that the proposed schemes can achieve superior performance for on-demand mobile-edge cloud computing.

COPSS-lite: Lightweight ICN Based Pub/Sub for IoT Environments

Information Centric Networking is a new networking paradigm that treats content as first class entity. It provides content to users without regards to the current location of the content. The publish/subscribe systems have gained popularity in Internet. Pub/sub systems dismisses the need for users to request every content of their interest. Instead, the content is supplied to interested users (subscribers) as and when it is published. CCN/NDN are popular ICN proposals widely accepted in the ICN community however, they do not provide an efficient pub/sub mechanism. COPSS enhances CCN/NDN with an efficient pub/sub capability. Internet of Things (IoT) is a growing topic of interest in both Academia and Industry. The current designs for IoT relies on IP. However, the IoT devices are constrained in their available resources and IP is heavy for their operation. We observed that IoT's are information centric in nature and hence ICN is a more suitable candidate to support IoT environments. Although NDN and COPSS work well for the Internet, their current full fledged implementations cannot be used by the resource constrained IoT devices. CCN-lite is a light weight, inter-operable version of the CCNx protocol for supporting the IoT devices. However, CCN-lite like its ancestors lacks the support for an efficient pub/sub mechanism. In this paper, we developed COPSS-lite, an efficient and light weight implementation of pub/sub for IoT. COPSS-lite is developed to enhance CCN-lite and also support multi-hop connection by incorporating the famous RPL protocol for low power and lossy networks. We provide a preliminary evaluation to show proof of operability with real world sensor devices in IoT lab. Our results show that COPSS-lite is compact, operates on all platforms that support CCN-lite and we observe significant performance benefits with COPSS-lite in IoT environments.

Reliable Virtual Machine Placement and Routing in Clouds

In current cloud computing systems, when leveraging virtualization technology, the customer's requested data computing or storing service is accommodated by a set of communicated virtual machines (VM) in a scalable and elastic manner. These VMs are placed in one or more server nodes according to the node capacities or failure probabilities. The VM placement availability refers to the probability that at least one set of all customer's requested VMs operates during the requested lifetime. In this paper, we first study the problem of placing at most H groups of k requested VMs on a minimum number of nodes, such that the VM placement availability is no less than $δ$, and that the specified communication delay and connection availability for each VM pair under the same placement group are not violated. We consider this problem with and without Shared-Risk Node Group (SRNG) failures, and prove this problem is NP-hard in both cases. We subsequently propose an exact Integer Nonlinear Program (INLP) and an efficient heuristic to solve this problem. We conduct simulations to compare the proposed algorithms with two existing heuristics in terms of performance. Finally, we study the related reliable routing problem of establishing a connection over at most w link-disjoint paths from a source to a destination, such that the connection availability requirement is satisfied and each path delay is no more than a given value. We devise an exact algorithm and two heuristics to solve this NP-hard problem, and evaluate them via simulations.

Trajectory Recovery From Ash: User Privacy Is NOT Preserved in Aggregated Mobility Data

Human mobility data has been ubiquitously collected through cellular networks and mobile applications, and publicly released for academic research and commercial purposes for the last decade. Since releasing individual's mobility records usually gives rise to privacy issues, datasets owners tend to only publish aggregated mobility data, such as the number of users covered by a cellular tower at a specific timestamp, which is believed to be sufficient for preserving users' privacy. However, in this paper, we argue and prove that even publishing aggregated mobility data could lead to privacy breach in individuals' trajectories. We develop an attack system that is able to exploit the uniqueness and regularity of human mobility to recover individual's trajectories from the aggregated mobility data without any prior knowledge. By conducting experiments on two real-world datasets collected from both mobile application and cellular network, we reveal that the attack system is able to recover users' trajectories with accuracy about 73%~91% at the scale of tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands users, which indicates severe privacy leakage in such datasets. Through the investigation on aggregated mobility data, our work recognizes a novel privacy problem in publishing statistic data, which appeals for immediate attentions from both academy and industry.

Content Retrieval At the Edge: A Social-aware and Named Data Cooperative Framework

Recent years with the popularity of mobile devices have witnessed an explosive growth of mobile multimedia contents which dominate more than 50\% of mobile data traffic. This significant growth poses a severe challenge for future cellular networks. As a promising approach to overcome the challenge, we advocate Content Retrieval At the Edge, a content-centric cooperative service paradigm via device-to-device (D2D) communications to reduce cellular traffic volume in mobile networks. By leveraging the Named Data Networking (NDN) principle, we propose sNDN, a social-aware named data framework to achieve efficient cooperative content retrieval. Specifically, sNDN introduces Friendship Circle by grouping a user with her close friends of both high mobility similarity and high content similarity. We construct NDN routing tables conditioned on Friendship Circle encounter frequency to navigate a content request and a content reply packet between Friendship Circles, and leverage social properties in Friendship Circle to search for the final target as inner-Friendship Circle routing. The evaluation results demonstrate that sNDN can save cellular capacity greatly and outperform other content retrieval schemes significantly.

SAID: A Control Protocol for Scalable and Adaptive Information Dissemination in ICN

Information dissemination applications (video, news, social media, etc.) with large number of receivers need to be efficient but also have limited loss tolerance. The new Information-Centric Networks (ICN) paradigm offers an alternative approach for reliably delivering data by naming content and exploiting data available at any intermediate point (e.g., caches). However, receivers are often heterogeneous, with widely varying receive rates. When using existing ICN congestion control mechanisms with in-sequence delivery, a particularly thorny problem of receivers going out-of-sync results in inefficiency and unfairness with heterogeneous receivers. We argue that separating reliability from congestion control leads to more scalable, efficient and fair data dissemination, and propose SAID, a Control Protocol for Scalable and Adaptive Information Dissemination in ICN. To maximize the amount of data transmitted at the first attempt, receivers request any next packet (ANP) of a flow instead of next-in-sequence packet, independent of the provider's transmit rate. This allows providers to transmit at an application-efficient rate, without being limited by the slower receivers. SAID ensures reliable delivery to all receivers eventually, by cooperative repair, while preserving privacy without unduly trusting other receivers.

Efficient Multi-User Computation Offloading for Mobile-Edge Cloud Computing

Mobile-edge cloud computing is a new paradigm to provide cloud computing capabilities at the edge of pervasive radio access networks in close proximity to mobile users. In this paper, we first study the multi-user computation offloading problem for mobile-edge cloud computing in a multi-channel wireless interference environment. We show that it is NP-hard to compute a centralized optimal solution, and hence adopt a game theoretic approach for achieving efficient computation offloading in a distributed manner. We formulate the distributed computation offloading decision making problem among mobile device users as a multi-user computation offloading game. We analyze the structural property of the game and show that the game admits a Nash equilibrium and possesses the finite improvement property. We then design a distributed computation offloading algorithm that can achieve a Nash equilibrium, derive the upper bound of the convergence time, and quantify its efficiency ratio over the centralized optimal solutions in terms of two important performance metrics. We further extend our study to the scenario of multi-user computation offloading in the multi-channel wireless contention environment. Numerical results corroborate that the proposed algorithm can achieve superior computation offloading performance and scale well as the user size increases.

Recent Advances and Challenges in Ubiquitous Sensing

Ubiquitous sensing is tightly coupled with activity recognition. This survey reviews recent advances in Ubiquitous sensing and looks ahead on promising future directions. In particular, Ubiquitous sensing crosses new barriers giving us new ways to interact with the environment or to inspect our psyche. Through sensing paradigms that parasitically utilise stimuli from the noise of environmental, third-party pre-installed systems, sensing leaves the boundaries of the personal domain. Compared to previous environmental sensing approaches, these new systems mitigate high installation and placement cost by providing a robustness towards process noise. On the other hand, sensing focuses inward and attempts to capture mental activities such as cognitive load, fatigue or emotion through advances in, for instance, eye-gaze sensing systems or interpretation of body gesture or pose. This survey summarises these developments and discusses current research questions and promising future directions.
