GAMIVAL: Video Quality Prediction on Mobile Cloud Gaming Content

The mobile cloud gaming industry has been rapidly growing over the last decade. When streaming gaming videos are transmitted to customers' client devices from cloud servers, algorithms that can monitor distorted video quality without having any reference video available are desirable tools. However, creating No-Reference Video Quality Assessment (NR VQA) models that can accurately predict the quality of streaming gaming videos rendered by computer graphics engines is a challenging problem, since gaming content generally differs statistically from naturalistic videos, often lacks detail, and contains many smooth regions. Until recently, the problem has been further complicated by the lack of adequate subjective quality databases of mobile gaming content. We have created a new gaming-specific NR VQA model called the Gaming Video Quality Evaluator (GAMIVAL), which combines and leverages the advantages of spatial and temporal gaming distorted scene statistics models, a neural noise model, and deep semantic features. Using a support vector regression (SVR) as a regressor, GAMIVAL achieves superior performance on the new LIVE-Meta Mobile Cloud Gaming (LIVE-Meta MCG) video quality database.

Study of Subjective and Objective Quality Assessment of Mobile Cloud Gaming Videos

We present the outcomes of a recent large-scale subjective study of Mobile Cloud Gaming Video Quality Assessment (MCG-VQA) on a diverse set of gaming videos. Rapid advancements in cloud services, faster video encoding technologies, and increased access to high-speed, low-latency wireless internet have all contributed to the exponential growth of the Mobile Cloud Gaming industry. Consequently, the development of methods to assess the quality of real-time video feeds to end-users of cloud gaming platforms has become increasingly important. However, due to the lack of a large-scale public Mobile Cloud Gaming Video dataset containing a diverse set of distorted videos with corresponding subjective scores, there has been limited work on the development of MCG-VQA models. Towards accelerating progress towards these goals, we created a new dataset, named the LIVE-Meta Mobile Cloud Gaming (LIVE-Meta-MCG) video quality database, composed of 600 landscape and portrait gaming videos, on which we collected 14,400 subjective quality ratings from an in-lab subjective study. Additionally, to demonstrate the usefulness of the new resource, we benchmarked multiple state-of-the-art VQA algorithms on the database. The new database will be made publicly available on our website: \url{https://live.ece.utexas.edu/research/LIVE-Meta-Mobile-Cloud-Gaming/index.html}

Optimization design of a micro-perforated panel absorber with 8.6 octave bands

In order to improve low-frequency characteristics of micro-perforated panel absorbers, sound absorption structures composed of micro-perforated panels and expansion chambers are design, and an optimization design method is constructed based on the transfer function model and the simulated annealing algorithm. First, a single-chamber structure composed of a micro-perforated panel and an expansion chamber is build, and the sound absorption curve is simulated by the finite element method. Second, for the sake of enlarging the continuous absorption bandwidth with absorption coefficients not less than 0.8, a three-chamber structure is designed, which has a sound absorption bandwidth of 1277Hz (27-1304Hz) covering 5.6 octave bands. Then, the transfer function model of the structure is established, and a series of theoretical formulae are derived to calculate the absorption coefficients. Subsequently, the sound absorption bandwidths calculated by the theoretical formulae and the finite element method are compared, and the relative error is 3.68%. Finally, an optimization design method is constructed by combining the transfer function model and the simulated annealing algorithm, where the optimization objective is to maximize the absorption bandwidth and the optimization variables are structural parameters of the three-chamber structure. The results show, after optimization, the three-chamber structure exhibits an excellent sound absorption performance, with a continuous bandwidth of 1591Hz (4-1595Hz), realizing 8.6 octave bands.

Higher order topological state induced by $d$-wave competing orders in high-T$_c$ superconductor based heterostructure

We introduce a two-dimensional Chern insulator in proximity to a $d$-wave pseudogap state of the high-T$_c$ superconducting material as an effective platform to realize the higher order topological system. The proximity-induced $d$-density-wave (DDW) order in the Chern insulator layer serves as an effective mass. The edge states will be fully gapped by this DDW order. In the real space, the sign of the DDW order parameter changes at the system corners due to the $d$-wave factor, leading to the gapless corner states, indicating that this system may be in a higher order topological state. The higher order topology in this coupled system is confirmed based on the calculation of the edge polarization and the quadrupole moment. In the superconducting state where the superconducting order and the DDW order coexist, the Majorana corner states emerge.

Predicting convection configurations in coupled fluid-porous systems

A ubiquitous arrangement in nature is a free-flowing fluid coupled to a porous medium, for example a river or lake lying above a porous bed. Depending on the environmental conditions, thermal convection can occur and may be confined to the clear fluid region, forming shallow convection cells, or it can penetrate into the porous medium, forming deep cells. Here, we combine three complementary approaches -- linear stability analysis, fully nonlinear numerical simulations, and a coarse-grained model -- to determine the circumstances that lead to each configuration. The coarse-grained model yields an explicit formula for the transition between deep and shallow convection in the physically relevant limit of small Darcy number. Near the onset of convection, all three of the approaches agree, validating the predictive capability of the explicit formula. The numerical simulations extend these results into the strongly nonlinear regime, revealing novel hybrid configurations in which the flow exhibits a dynamic shift from shallow to deep convection. This hybrid shallow-to-deep convection begins with small, random initial data, progresses through a metastable shallow state, and arrives at the preferred steady-state of deep convection. We construct a phase diagram that incorporates information from all three approaches and depicts the regions in parameter space that give rise to each convective state.

Fully Convolutional One-Stage 3D Object Detection on LiDAR Range Images

We present a simple yet effective fully convolutional one-stage 3D object detector for LiDAR point clouds of autonomous driving scenes, termed FCOS-LiDAR. Unlike the dominant methods that use the bird-eye view (BEV), our proposed detector detects objects from the range view (RV, a.k.a. range image) of the LiDAR points. Due to the range view's compactness and compatibility with the LiDAR sensors' sampling process on self-driving cars, the range view-based object detector can be realized by solely exploiting the vanilla 2D convolutions, departing from the BEV-based methods which often involve complicated voxelization operations and sparse convolutions. For the first time, we show that an RV-based 3D detector with standard 2D convolutions alone can achieve comparable performance to state-of-the-art BEV-based detectors while being significantly faster and simpler. More importantly, almost all previous range view-based detectors only focus on single-frame point clouds, since it is challenging to fuse multi-frame point clouds into a single range view. In this work, we tackle this challenging issue with a novel range view projection mechanism, and for the first time demonstrate the benefits of fusing multi-frame point clouds for a range-view based detector. Extensive experiments on nuScenes show the superiority of our proposed method and we believe that our work can be strong evidence that an RV-based 3D detector can compare favourably with the current mainstream BEV-based detectors.

Golfer: Trajectory Prediction with Masked Goal Conditioning MnM Network

Transformers have enabled breakthroughs in NLP and computer vision, and have recently began to show promising performance in trajectory prediction for Autonomous Vehicle (AV). How to efficiently model the interactive relationships between the ego agent and other road and dynamic objects remains challenging for the standard attention module. In this work we propose a general Transformer-like architectural module MnM network equipped with novel masked goal conditioning training procedures for AV trajectory prediction. The resulted model, named golfer, achieves state-of-the-art performance, winning the 2nd place in the 2022 Waymo Open Dataset Motion Prediction Challenge and ranked 1st place according to minADE.

Molecular engineering of metal-free perovskite MDABCO-NH4I3 towards enhanced ferroelectric polarization

Molecular ferroelectrics have attracted increasing interests over the past decade due to mechanical flexibility, chemical diversity, environmental friendliness, easy-processing, and lightness. The performance of molecular ferroelectrics is approaching more and more competitive to their inorganic counterparts. Despite the chemical diversity and tunability of the molecular cations or anions, molecular ferroelectrics are not abundant. In particular, physical directed design principles for new discovery or performance optimization are still lacking. Here, through first-principles calculations, we firstly reveal the importance of the molecular dipole moment of the polar cations in a molecular perovskite ferroelectric, and then propose a molecular dipole guided design rule for high-performance molecular ferroelectrics. Finally, the rule is validated by first-principles calculations. We anticipate that the rule is very useful in the field urging for new and high-performance molecular ferroelectrics.

Fragile topology in nodal-line semimetal superconductors

We study the band topology of the superconducting nodal-line semimetal (SC-NLSM) protected by the inversion symmetry with and without the spin-orbital coupling. Without the spin-orbital coupling, both the $s$-wave SC-NLSM and the chiral $p$-wave SC-NLSM are topologically nontrivial and can be described by the nonzero winding number. Based on the Wilson loop method, we verify that they are both the fragile topological superconductors, namely, their nontrivial band topologies can be moved off by coupling to additional topologically trivial bands. The fragile topological phase persists in spinful system with the time-reversal symmetry when a spin-orbital coupling term is added. For the spinful system, both the $p$-wave SC-NLSM and the $s$-wave SC-NLSM are second-order fragile topological superconductors. We propose that the fragile topology in the SC-NLSM system depends strongly on the degeneracy of the Majorana zero modes and the parity of the superconducting gap function. Interestingly, in presence of a vortex line, the spinful $s$-wave SC-NLSM system hosts two pairs of stable Majorana zero modes in the vortex core.

Eliminating Systematic Bias from Difference-in-Differences Design: A Permutational Detrending Strategy

Since the initial work by Ashenfelter and Card in 1985, the use of difference-in-differences (DID) study design has become widespread. However, as pointed out in the literature, this popular quasi-experimental design also suffers estimation bias and inference bias, which could be very serious in some circumstances. In this study, we start by investigating potential sources of systemic bias from the DID design. Via analyzing their impact on statistical estimation and inference, we propose a remedy -- a permutational detrending (PD) strategy -- to overcome the challenges in both the estimation bias and the inference bias. We prove that the proposed PD DID method provides unbiased point estimates, confidence interval estimates, and significance tests. We illustrate its statistical proprieties using simulation experiments. We demonstrate its practical utility by applying it to the clinical data EASE (Elder-Friendly Approaches to the Surgical Environment) and the social-economical data CPS (Current Population Survey). We discuss the strengths and limitations of the proposed approach.

Superior Photo-carrier Diffusion Dynamics in Organic-inorganic Hybrid Perovskites Revealed by Spatiotemporal Conductivity Imaging

The outstanding performance of organic-inorganic metal trihalide solar cells benefits from the exceptional photo-physical properties of both electrons and holes in the material. Here, we directly probe the free-carrier dynamics in Cs-doped FAPbI3 thin films by spatiotemporal photoconductivity imaging. Using charge transport layers to selectively quench one type of carriers, we show that the two relaxation times on the order of 1 microsecond and 10 microseconds correspond to the lifetimes of electrons and holes in FACsPbI3, respectively. Strikingly, the diffusion mapping indicates that the difference in electron/hole lifetimes is largely compensated by their disparate mobility. Consequently, the long diffusion lengths (3 ~ 5 micrometers) of both carriers are comparable to each other, a feature closely related to the unique charge trapping and de-trapping processes in hybrid trihalide perovskites. Our results unveil the origin of superior diffusion dynamics in this material, crucially important for solar-cell applications.

Error estimate of a decoupled numerical scheme for the Cahn-Hilliard-Stokes-Darcy system

We analyze a fully discrete finite element numerical scheme for the Cahn-Hilliard-Stokes-Darcy system that models two-phase flows in coupled free flow and porous media. To avoid a well-known difficulty associated with the coupling between the Cahn-Hilliard equation and the fluid motion, we make use of the operator-splitting in the numerical scheme, so that these two solvers are decoupled, which in turn would greatly improve the computational efficiency. The unique solvability and the energy stability have been proved in~\cite{CHW2017}. In this work, we carry out a detailed convergence analysis and error estimate for the fully discrete finite element scheme, so that the optimal rate convergence order is established in the energy norm, i.e.,, in the $\ell^\infty (0, T; H^1) \cap \ell^2 (0, T; H^2)$ norm for the phase variables, as well as in the $\ell^\infty (0, T; H^1) \cap \ell^2 (0, T; H^2)$ norm for the velocity variable. Such an energy norm error estimate leads to a cancellation of a nonlinear error term associated with the convection part, which turns out to be a key step to pass through the analysis. In addition, a discrete $\ell^2 (0;T; H^3)$ bound of the numerical solution for the phase variables plays an important role in the error estimate, which is accomplished via a discrete version of Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality in the finite element setting.

Energy stable arbitrary order ETD-MS method for gradient flows with Lipschitz nonlinearity

We present a methodology to construct efficient high-order in time accurate numerical schemes for a class of gradient flows with appropriate Lipschitz continuous nonlinearity. There are several ingredients to the strategy: the exponential time differencing (ETD), the multi-step (MS) methods, the idea of stabilization, and the technique of interpolation. They are synthesized to develop a generic $k^{th}$ order in time efficient linear numerical scheme with the help of an artificial regularization term of the form $Aτ^k\frac{\partial}{\partial t}\mathcal{L}^{p(k)}u$ where $\mathcal{L}$ is the positive definite linear part of the flow, $τ$ is the uniform time step-size. The exponent $p(k)$ is determined explicitly by the strength of the Lipschitz nonlinear term in relation to $\mathcal{L}$ together with the desired temporal order of accuracy $k$. To validate our theoretical analysis, the thin film epitaxial growth without slope selection model is examined with a fourth-order ETD-MS discretization in time and Fourier pseudo-spectral in space discretization. Our numerical results on convergence and energy stability are in accordance with our theoretical results.

Global Weak Solutions to the Navier-Stokes-Darcy-Boussinesq System for Thermal Convection in Coupled Free and Porous Media Flows

We study the Navier-Stokes-Darcy-Boussinesq system that models the thermal convection of a fluid overlying a saturated porous medium in a general decomposed domain. In both two and three spatial dimensions, we first prove the existence of global weak solutions to the initial boundary value problem subject to the Lions and Beavers-Joseph-Saffman-Jones interface conditions. The proof is based on a proper time-implicit discretization scheme combined with the Leray-Schauder principle and compactness arguments. Next, we establish a weak-strong uniqueness result such that a weak solution coincides with a strong solution emanating from the same initial data as long as the latter exists.

Explicit Gain Equations for Single Crystalline Photoconductors

Photoconductors based on semiconducting thin films, nanowires and 2-dimensional atomic layers have been extensively investigated. But there is no explicit photogain equation that allows for fitting and designing photoresponses of these devices. In this work, we managed to derive explicit photogain equations for silicon nanowire photoconductors based on experimental observations. The silicon nanowires were fabricated by patterning the device layer of silicon-on-insulator wafers by standard lithography that were doped with boron. It was found that the as-fabricated silicon nanowires have a surface depletion region ~ 32 nm wide. This depletion region protects charge carriers in the channel from surface scatterings, resulting in the independence of charge carrier mobilities on nanowire size. It is consistent with our Hall effect measurements but in contradiction with the accepted conclusion in the past decades that charge carrier mobilities become smaller for smaller nanowires due to surface scatterings. Under light illumination, the depletion region logarithmically narrows down and the nanowire channel widens accordingly. Photo Hall effect measurements show that the nanowire photoconductance is not contributed by the increase of carrier concentrations but the widening of the nanowire channel. As a result, a nanowire photoconductor can be modeled as a resistor in connection with floating Schottky junctions near the nanowire surfaces. Based on the photoresponses of a Schottky junction, we derived explicit photogain equations for nanowire photoconductors that are a function of light intensity and device physical parameters. The gain equations fit well with the experimental data, from which we extracted the minority carrier lifetimes that are consistent with the minority carrier lifetime in nanowires reported in literature.

Security Improvements of Several Basic Quantum Private Query Protocols with O(log N) Communication Complexity

New quantum private database (with N elements) query protocols are presented and analyzed. Protocols preserve O(logN) communication complexity of known protocols for the same task, but achieve several significant improvements in security, especially concerning user privacy. For example, the randomized form of our protocol has a cheat-sensitive property - it allows the user to detect a dishonest database with a nonzero probability, while the phase-encoded private query protocols for the same task do not have such a property. Moreover, when the database performs the computational basis measurement, a particular projective measurement which can cause a significant loss of user privacy in the previous private query protocols with O(logN) communication complexity, at most half of the user privacy could leak to such a database in our protocol, while in the QPQ protocol, the entire user privacy could leak out. In addition, it is proved here that for large N, the user could detect a cheating via the computational basis measurement, with a probability close to 1/2 using O(\sqrt{N}) special queries. Finally, it is shown here, for both forms of our protocol, basic and randomized, how a dishonest database has to act in case it could not learn user's queries.

Smart, Adaptive Energy Optimization for Mobile Web Interactions

Web technology underpins many interactive mobile applications. However, energy-efficient mobile web interactions is an outstanding challenge. Given the increasing diversity and complexity of mobile hardware, any practical optimization scheme must work for a wide range of users, mobile platforms and web workloads. This paper presents CAMEL , a novel energy optimization system for mobile web interactions. CAMEL leverages machine learning techniques to develop a smart, adaptive scheme to judiciously trade performance for reduced power consumption. Unlike prior work, C AMEL directly models how a given web content affects the user expectation and uses this to guide energy optimization. It goes further by employing transfer learning and conformal predictions to tune a previously learned model in the end-user environment and improve it over time. We apply CAMEL to Chromium and evaluate it on four distinct mobile systems involving 1,000 testing webpages and 30 users. Compared to four state-of-the-art web-event optimizers, CAMEL delivers 22% more energy savings, but with 49% fewer violations on the quality of user experience, and exhibits orders of magnitudes less overhead when targeting a new computing environment.

Insight into bias in time-stratified case-crossover studies

The use of case-crossover designs has become widespread in epidemiological and medical investigations of transient associations. However, the most popular reference-select strategy, the time-stratified schema, is not a suitable solution for controlling bias in case-crossover studies. To prove this, we conducted a time series decomposition for daily ozone (O3) records; scrutinized the ability of the time-stratified schema on controlling the yearly, monthly and weekly time trends; and found it failed on controlling the weekly time trend. Based on this finding, we proposed a new logistic regression approach in which we did adjustment for the weekly time trend. A comparison between the traditional model and the proposed method was done by simulation. An empirical study was conducted to explore potential associations between air pollutants and AMI hospitalizations. In summary, time-stratified schema provide effective control on yearly and monthly time trends but not on weekly time trend. Therefore, the estimation from the traditional logistical regression basically reveals the effect of weekly time trend, instead of the transient effect. In contrast, the proposed logistic regression with adjustment for weekly time trend can effectively eliminate system bias in case-crossover studies.
