Naive Prompt Optimization: Rethinking the Need for Complex Prompt Search

Efficiently improving autonomous agents across diverse tasks is central to accelerating recursive self-improvement (RSI) in agentic AI, with prompt optimization emerging as a promising approach capable of delivering performance gains comparable to those achieved by fine-tuning model weights, while reducing computational costs in both optimization and serving. However, recent developments increasingly favor unnecessarily complex prompt optimizers. We introduce Naive Prompt Optimization (NPO), a lightweight single-lineage method that iteratively revises prompts using a teacher model with rollout feedback. NPO achieves comparable or better performance than GEPA with fewer rollouts, and its advantage increases with stronger teacher models, suggesting that stronger teacher reasoning can partially substitute for optimizer-side search complexity. In interactive games, NPO remains broadly competitive with GEPA, while GRPO performs better on some tasks less amenable to prompt optimization. We also show that NPO-optimized prompts elicit similar performance improvements when applied verbatim to other student models, especially across models within the same family. Overall, our preliminary results show that simple, linear prompt optimization can rival substantially more sophisticated and complex search procedures.

OmniEEG-Bench: A Standardized Evaluation Benchmark for EEG Foundation Models

Electroencephalography (EEG) supports a variety of brain-computer interface (BCI) tasks ranging from brain-state monitoring to human-LLM interactions. EEG foundation models are emerging, but evaluation remains fragmented due to heterogeneous datasets and nconsistent task protocols. Here, we introduce OmniEEG-Bench, a unified benchmark and downstream task roadmap for EEG foundation models (FMs). It organizes evaluation of EEG FMs into six task families spanning (i) signal reliability, (ii) biometrics and disease, (iii) consciousness and state, (iv) cognition and emotion, (v) naturalistic stimulus decoding, and (vi) motor and interaction, introducing a new generation of tasks not systematically benchmarked in prior EEG FM work. OmniEEG-Bench standardizes model deployment, task definitions, and metrics through a task-card specification, and unifies 54 EEG datasets with consistent evaluation protocols. We benchmark 10 representative EEG foundation models and report a leaderboard that covers diverse evaluation settings. Both pretraining dataset diversity and model size are significantly associated with better average ranks across datasets, revealing scaling-law behavior in EEG foundation models (Figure 1). These results suggest that scaling EEG foundation models requires not only larger architectures but also broader and more diverse pretraining data. The benchmark code is available at https://github.com/ncclab-sustech/omni-eegbench.git.

Spatio-temporal propagation of COVID-19 pandemics

The new coronavirus known as COVID-19 is spread world-wide since December 2019. Without any vaccination or medicine, the means of controlling it are limited to quarantine and social distancing. Here we study the spatio-temporal propagation of the first wave of the COVID-19 virus in China and compare it to other global locations. We provide a comprehensive picture of the spatial propagation from Hubei to other provinces in China in terms of distance, population size, and human mobility and their scaling relations. Since strict quarantine has been usually applied between cities, more insight about the temporal evolution of the disease can be obtained by analyzing the epidemic within cities, especially the time evolution of the infection, death, and recovery rates which affected by policies. We study and compare the infection rate in different cities in China and provinces in Italy and find that the disease spread is characterized by a two-stages process. At early times, at order of few days, the infection rate is close to a constant probably due to the lack of means to detect infected individuals before infection symptoms are observed. Then at later times it decays approximately exponentially due to quarantines. The time evolution of the death and recovery rates also distinguish between these two stages and reflect the health system situation which could be overloaded.

Routing Oblivious Measurement Analytics

Network-wide traffic analytics are often needed for various network monitoring tasks. These measurements are often performed by collecting samples at network switches, which are then sent to the controller for aggregation. However, performing such analytics without ``overcounting'' flows or packets that traverse multiple measurement switches is challenging. Therefore, existing solutions often simplify the problem by making assumptions on the routing or measurement switch placement. We introduce AROMA, a measurement infrastructure that generates a uniform sample of packets and flows regardless of the topology, workload and routing. Therefore, AROMA can be deployed in many settings, and can also work in the data plane using programmable PISA switches. The AROMA infrastructure includes controller algorithms that approximate a variety of essential measurement tasks while providing formal accuracy guarantees. Using extensive simulations on real-world network traces, we show that our algorithms are competitively accurate compared to the best existing solutions despite the fact that they make no assumptions on the underlying network or the placement of measurement switches.

Efficient Measurement on Programmable Switches Using Probabilistic Recirculation

Programmable network switches promise flexibility and high throughput, enabling applications such as load balancing and traffic engineering. Network measurement is a fundamental building block for such applications, including tasks such as the identification of heavy hitters (largest flows) or the detection of traffic changes. However, high-throughput packet processing architectures place certain limitations on the programming model, such as restricted branching, limited capability for memory access, and a limited number of processing stages. These limitations restrict the types of measurement algorithms that can run on programmable switches. In this paper, we focus on the RMT programmable high-throughput switch architecture, and carefully examine its constraints on designing measurement algorithms. We demonstrate our findings while solving the heavy hitter problem. We introduce PRECISION, an algorithm that uses \emph{Probabilistic Recirculation} to find top flows on a programmable switch. By recirculating a small fraction of packets, PRECISION simplifies the access to stateful memory to conform with RMT limitations and achieves higher accuracy than previous heavy hitter detection algorithms that avoid recirculation. We also analyze the effect of each architectural constraint on the measurement accuracy and provide insights for measurement algorithm designers.

Gosig: Scalable Byzantine Consensus on Adversarial Wide Area Network for Blockchains

Existing Byzantine fault tolerance (BFT) protocols face significant challenges in the consortium blockchain scenario. On the one hand, we can make little assumptions about the reliability and security of the underlying Internet. On the other hand, the applications on consortium blockchains demand a system as scalable as the Bit-coin but providing much higher performance, as well as provable safety. We present a new BFT protocol, Gosig, that combines crypto-based secret leader selection and multi-round voting in the protocol layer with implementation layer optimizations such as gossip-based message propagation. In particular, Gosig guarantees safety even in a network fully controlled by adversaries, while providing provable liveness with easy-to-achieve network connectivity assumption. On a wide area testbed consisting of 140 Amazon EC2 servers spanning 14 cities on five continents, we show that Gosig can achieve over 4,000 transactions per second with less than 1 minute transaction confirmation time.
