SemISAC: Semantic Integrated Sensing and Communications

Conventional integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) systems primarily integrate communications and sensing through shared physical resources, without explicitly exploiting task-relevant semantic information. To move beyond such physical-level integration, we propose semantic ISAC (SemISAC), a general framework that unifies semantic communication (SemCom) and semantic sensing (SemS) to convey source meaning and acquire environmental meaning. Specifically, the transmitter combines source semantics and sensing task information with available side information to design the shared waveform and allocate radio resources, while the receiver-side communication and sensing task decoders recover the source meaning and infer the required environmental information, respectively. We also provide an information-theoretic interpretation to characterize the relationship between physical and task-relevant information and the resulting semantic trade-off in SemISAC. Building on this framework, we formulate the general SemISAC design problem and propose two realization methods, namely end-to-end (E2E) SemISAC optimization and modular SemISAC optimization. As a concrete realization, we apply modular SemISAC optimization to jointly design a learnable time-frequency (TF) precoder in an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system for representative SemCom and SemS tasks. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed realization reduces sensing semantic distortion under a given communication requirement and achieves a more favorable communication-sensing trade-off than baseline designs.

Channel Estimation for OFDM via Delay-Doppler Refinement

In this paper, we propose a novel channel estimation (CE) algorithm for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems that exploits the unique characteristics of the delay-Doppler (DD) domain channel. Specifically, the time-frequency (TF) domain input-output relationship (IOR) is derived in a compact form by focusing solely on the non-zero elements of the TF domain channel matrix. Based on this compact IOR, a coarse TF domain CE is first performed using a linear minimum mean square error estimator. Then, the resultant TF domain estimates are transformed to the DD domain through a unitary transformation for further refinement. We reveal that the effective DD domain channel matrix can be viewed as an aggregation of multiple DD domain channel responses with different phase shifts. This allows us to devise a threshold-based estimation for DD domain channel parameters with high accuracy. The estimated DD domain channel parameters are then applied to form a refined estimate of TF domain channel. Our numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve substantial performance gains over conventional OFDM channel estimation techniques under the same pilot deployment.

Semantic Sensing: Toward a Task-Oriented Paradigm

Sensing and communication are fundamental enablers of next-generation networks. While communication technologies have advanced significantly, sensing remains limited to conventional parameter estimation and is far from fully explored. Motivated by these limitations, we propose semantic sensing (SemS), a novel framework that shifts the design objective from reconstruction fidelity to semantic effective recognition. Specifically, we mathematically formulate the interaction between transmit waveforms and semantic entities, thereby establishing SemS as a semantics-oriented transceiver design. Within this architecture, we leverage the information bottleneck (IB) principle as a theoretical criterion to derive a unified objective, guiding the sensing pipeline to maximize task-relevant information extraction. To practically solve this optimization problem, we develop a deep learning (DL)-based framework that jointly designs transmit waveform parameters and receiver representations. The framework is implemented in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, featuring a shared semantic encoder that employs a Gumbel-Softmax-based pilot selector to discretely mask task-irrelevant resources. At the receiver, we design distinct decoding architectures tailored to specific sensing objectives, comprising a 2D residual network (ResNet)-based classifier for target recognition and a correlation-driven 1D regression network for high-precision delay estimation. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed semantic pilot design achieves superior classification accuracy and ranging precision compared to reconstruction-based baselines, particularly under constrained resource budgets.

Beamforming and Phase Shift Design for STAR-RIS Assisted Secure Sensing and Communication in ISAC Systems

Integrated sensing and communication(ISAC), as a rapidly advancing technique, introduces a fresh approach for achieving secure communication and intelligent sensing for future wireless networks. An ISAC framework empowered by simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surfaces(STAR-RIS) is explored in this paper, where a base station equipped with multiple antennas establishes wireless links to users each with a single antenna during the detection of a point target. The point target, regarded as an eavesdropper, trying to intercept users' information. Cramer-Rao bound(CRB) serves as evaluation criterion to assess sensing accuracy of point eavesdropper, whereas the secrecy rate is employed to quantify the security level of the communication link. To optimize sensing-communication tradeoff, a joint optimization problem is constructed. To approach the formulated problem, a hybrid Block Coordinate Descent(BCD)-based algorithm is developed, which alternately updates the transmission beamforming and STAR-RIS phase shifts, using successive convex approximation(SCA) technique, penalty dual decomposition (PDD) framework and projected gradient method(PGM).

Integrating Sensing into Covert Communications: Opportunities and Challenges

Covert communications aim to hide the existence of wireless transmissions from unauthorized adversaries. However, conventional designs based on blind interference or passive uncertainty can be ineffective in dynamic propagation environments. This article investigates sensing-empowered covert communications, where adversary and environmental information are used to guide transmission and jamming control. We show how sensing changes covert system design from passive concealment to state-aware decision-making, while also introducing new challenges related to exposure and resource consumption. We further discuss several intelligent sensing paradigms that extract task-relevant information with limited active probing. A case study in low-altitude wireless networks illustrates that sensing-assisted beamforming can improve spatial resource utilization and the reliability of covert data delivery in time-varying channels. Finally, several open issues are discussed to support more adaptive covert wireless systems.

Deep Learning-based OTFS Channel Estimation and Symbol Detection with Plug-and-Play Framework

Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation has recently attracted significant interest due to its potential for enabling reliable communication in high-mobility environments. However, the effectiveness of OTFS receivers relies on the inherent characteristic of the Delay-Doppler (DD) domain channel, where the sparsity of the discretized channel varies across different communication scenarios. For instance, the fractional Doppler effect reduces the inherent channel sparsity, which consequently degrades channel estimation accuracy and increases the complexity of symbol detection. Traditional algorithms relying on fixed sparsity priors often require manual design, while purely data-driven deep learning (DL) methods typically struggle to generalize across diverse channel conditions. To address these challenges, we propose a novel unsupervised DL-based plug-and-play (PnP) framework that provides a flexible solution for OTFS receiver design. The proposed framework can be applied to both channel estimation and symbol detection, jointly leveraging the flexibility of optimization-based methods and the powerful generalization capability of data-driven models. Specifically, a lightweight encoder-decoder network (EDN) is incorporated as an implicit channel prior for channel estimation, enabling robust performance across varying levels of channel sparsity. Furthermore, for symbol detection, we realize the PnP framework with a time-domain matrix inversion for model-based equalization, followed by a small multi-layer perceptron (MLP) pre-trained for specific constellations, thereby achieving low complexity and enabling flexible adaptation to various modulation formats. Finally, numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the algorithm.

Toward Multi-Functional LAWNs with ISAC: Opportunities, Challenges, and the Road Ahead

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been envisioned as a foundational technology for future low-altitude wireless networks (LAWNs), enabling real-time environmental perception and data exchange across aerial-ground systems. In this article, we first explore the roles of ISAC in LAWNs from both node-level and network-level perspectives. We highlight the performance gains achieved through hierarchical integration and cooperation, wherein key design trade-offs are demonstrated. Apart from physical-layer enhancements, emerging LAWN applications demand broader functionalities. To this end, we propose a multi-functional LAWN framework that extends ISAC with capabilities in control, computation, wireless power transfer, and large language model (LLM)-based intelligence. We further provide a representative case study to present the benefits of ISAC-enabled LAWNs and the promising research directions are finally outlined.

Beyond Diagonal Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Enabled Sensing: Cramer-Rao Bound Optimization

Recently, beyond diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS) has emerged as a more flexible solution to engineer the wireless propagation channels, thanks to its non-diagonal reflecting matrix. Although the gain of the BD-RIS over the conventional RIS in communication has been revealed in many works, its gain in 6G sensing is still unknown. This motivates us to study the BD-RIS assisted sensing in this letter. Specifically, we derive the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for estimating the angle-of-arrival (AOA) from the target to the BD-RIS under the constraint that the BD-RIS scattering matrix is unitary. To minimize the CRB, we develop an optimization scheme based on an adaptive Riemannian steepest ascent algorithm that can satisfy the non-convex unitary constraint. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed BD-RIS-assisted target localization method achieves superior sensing performance.

Optimizing Rate-CRB Performance for Beyond Diagonal Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Enabled ISAC

This letter considers a beyond diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS) aided integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system, where the BD-RIS can help a multi-antenna base station (BS) serve multiple user equipments (UEs) and localize a target simultaneously. We formulate an optimization problem that designs the BS beamforming matrix and the BD-RIS scattering matrix to maximize UEs' sum rate subject to a localization Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) constraint and an additional unitary matrix constraint for the scattering matrix. Because unitary matrices form a manifold, our problem belongs to constrained manifold optimization. This letter proposes a log-barrier based Riemannian steepest ascent method to solve this problem effectively. Numerical results verify the effectiveness of our algorithm and the performance gain of the BD-RIS aided ISAC systems over the conventional RIS aided ISAC systems.

Complexity of Government response to Covid-19 pandemic: A perspective of coupled dynamics on information heterogeneity and epidemic outbreak

This study aims at modeling the universal failure in preventing the outbreak of COVID-19 via real-world data from the perspective of complexity and network science. Through formalizing information heterogeneity and government intervention in the coupled dynamics of epidemic and infodemic spreading; first, we find that information heterogeneity and its induced variation in human responses significantly increase the complexity of the government intervention decision. The complexity results in a dilemma between the socially optimal intervention that is risky for the government and the privately optimal intervention that is safer for the government but harmful to the social welfare. Second, via counterfactual analysis against the COVID-19 crisis in Wuhan, 2020, we find that the intervention dilemma becomes even worse if the initial decision time and the decision horizon vary. In the short horizon, both socially and privately optimal interventions agree with each other and require blocking the spread of all COVID-19-related information, leading to a negligible infection ratio 30 days after the initial reporting time. However, if the time horizon is prolonged to 180 days, only the privately optimal intervention requires information blocking, which would induce a catastrophically higher infection ratio than that in the counter-factual world where the socially optimal intervention encourages early-stage information spread. These findings contribute to the literature by revealing the complexity incurred by the coupled infodemic-epidemic dynamics and information heterogeneity to the governmental intervention decision, which also sheds insight into the design of an effective early warning system against the epidemic crisis in the future.

The USTC-Ximalaya system for the ICASSP 2022 multi-channel multi-party meeting transcription (M2MeT) challenge

We propose two improvements to target-speaker voice activity detection (TS-VAD), the core component in our proposed speaker diarization system that was submitted to the 2022 Multi-Channel Multi-Party Meeting Transcription (M2MeT) challenge. These techniques are designed to handle multi-speaker conversations in real-world meeting scenarios with high speaker-overlap ratios and under heavy reverberant and noisy condition. First, for data preparation and augmentation in training TS-VAD models, speech data containing both real meetings and simulated indoor conversations are used. Second, in refining results obtained after TS-VAD based decoding, we perform a series of post-processing steps to improve the VAD results needed to reduce diarization error rates (DERs). Tested on the ALIMEETING corpus, the newly released Mandarin meeting dataset used in M2MeT, we demonstrate that our proposed system can decrease the DER by up to 66.55/60.59% relatively when compared with classical clustering based diarization on the Eval/Test set.

Lookup subnet based Spatial Graph Convolutional neural Network

Convolutional Neural Networks(CNNs) has achieved remarkable performance breakthrough in Euclidean structure data. Recently, aggregation-transformation based Graph Neural networks(GNNs) gradually produce a powerful performance on non-Euclidean data. In this paper, we propose a cross-correlation based graph convolution method allowing to naturally generalize CNNs to non-Euclidean domains and inherit the excellent natures of CNNs, such as local filters, parameter sharing, flexible receptive field, etc. Meanwhile, it leverages dynamically generated convolution kernel and cross-correlation operators to address the shortcomings of prior methods based on aggregation-transformation or their approximations. Our method has achieved or matched popular state-of-the-art results across three established graph benchmarks: the Cora, Citeseer, and Pubmed citation network datasets.

Evaluating the effect of city lock-down on controlling COVID-19 propagation through deep learning and network science models

The special epistemic characteristics of the COVID-19, such as the long incubation period and the infection through asymptomatic cases, put severe challenge to the containment of its outbreak. By the end of March 2020, China has successfully controlled the within-spreading of COVID-19 at a high cost of locking down most of its major cities, including the epicenter, Wuhan. Since the low accuracy of outbreak data before the mid of Feb. 2020 forms a major technical concern on those studies based on statistic inference from the early outbreak. We apply the supervised learning techniques to identify and train NP-Net-SIR model which turns out robust under poor data quality condition. By the trained model parameters, we analyze the connection between population flow and the cross-regional infection connection strength, based on which a set of counterfactual analysis is carried out to study the necessity of lock-down and substitutability between lock-down and the other containment measures. Our findings support the existence of non-lock-down-typed measures that can reach the same containment consequence as the lock-down, and provide useful guideline for the design of a more flexible containment strategy.

A simulation-based approach to estimate joint model of longitudinal and event-time data with many missing longitudinal observations

Joint models of longitudinal and event-time data have been extensively studied and applied in many different fields. Estimation of joint models is challenging, most present procedures are computational expensive and have a strict requirement on data quality. In this study, a novel simulation-based procedure is proposed to estimate a general family of joint models, which include many widely-applied joint models as special cases. Our procedure can easily handle low-quality data where longitudinal observations are systematically missed for some of the covariate dimensions. In addition, our estimation procedure is compatible with parallel computing framework when combining with stochastic descending algorithm, it is perfectly applicable to massive data and therefore suitable for many financial applications. Consistency and asymptotic normality of our estimator are proved, a simulation study is conducted to illustrate its effectiveness. Finally, as an application, the procedure is applied to estimate pre-payment probability of a massive consumer-loan dataset drawn from one biggest P2P loan platform of China.

A novel approach to estimate the Cox model with temporal covariates and its application to medical cost data

We propose a novel approach to estimate the Cox model with temporal covariates. Our new approach treats the temporal covariates as arising from a longitudinal process which is modeled jointly with the event time. Different from the literature, the longitudinal process in our model is specified as a bounded variational process and determined by a family of Initial Value Problems associated with an Ordinary Differential Equation. Our specification has the advantage that only the observation of the temporal covariates at the time to event and the time to event itself are required to fit the model, while it is fine but not necessary to have more longitudinal observations. This fact makes our approach very useful for many medical outcome datasets, like the New York State Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System and the National Inpatient Sample, where it is important to find the hazard rate of being discharged given the accumulative cost but only the total cost at the discharge time is available due to the protection of patient information. Our estimation procedure is based on maximizing the full information likelihood function. The resulting estimators are shown to be consistent and asymptotically normally distributed. Variable selection techniques, like Adaptive LASSO, can be easily modified and incorporated into our estimation procedure. The oracle property is verified for the resulting estimator of the regression coefficients. Simulations and a real example illustrate the practical utility of the proposed model. Finally, a couple of potential extensions of our approach are discussed.

Insert "Price" to Coxian Phase-Type Models: An Application to Hospital Charge and Length of Stay Data

In this paper, we discuss the connection between the RGRST models (Gardiner et al 2002, Polverejan et al 2003) and the Coxian Phase-Type (CPH) models (Marshall et al 2007, Tang 2012) through a construction that converts a special sub-class of RGRST models to CPH models. Both of the two models are widely used to characterize the distribution of hospital charge and length of stay (LOS), but the lack of connections between them makes the two models rarely used together. We claim that our construction can make up this gap and make it possible to take advantage of the two different models simultaneously. As a consequence, we derive a measure of the "price" of staying in each medical stage (identified with phases of a CPH model), which can't be approached without considering the RGRST and CPH models together.A two-stage algorithm is provided to generate consistent estimation of model parameters. Applying the algorithm to a sample drawn from the New York State's Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System 2013 (SPARCS 2013), we estimate the prices in a four-phase CPH model and discuss the implications.

Stochastic Process and Health Data: A Full Maximum Likelihood Method to Hospital Charge and Length of Stay Data

We extend the model used in Gardiner et al. (2002) and Polverejan et al. (2003) through deriving an explicit expression for the joint probability density function of hospital charge and length of stay (LOS) under a general class of conditions. Using this joint density function, we can apply the full maximum likelihood method (FML) to estimate the effect of covariates on charge and LOS. By FML, the endogeneity issues arisen from the dependence between charge and LOS can be efficiently resolved. As an illustrative example, we apply our method to real charge and LOS data sampled from New York State Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System 2013 (SPARCS 2013). We compare our fitting result with the fitting to the marginal LOS data generated by the widely used Phase-Type model, and conclude that our method is more efficient in fitting.
