Single-photon transport in one-dimensional coupled-resonator waveguide with second order nonlinearity coupling to a nanocavity containing a two-level atom and Kerr nonlinearity

We study controllable single photon scattering in a one-dimensional waveguide coupling with an additional cavity by second order nonlinear materials in a non-cascading configuration, where the additional cavity is embedded with two-level atom and filled with Kerr-nonlinear materials. Considering the second order nonlinear coupling, we analyze the transmission properties of the three different coupling forms as follows: (i) The two-level atom is excited without the Kerr-nonlinearity. (ii)The Kerr-nonlinearity is excited without the two-level atom. (iii) Both of the two-level atom and Kerr-nonlinearity are excited. The transmission and reflection amplitudes are obtained by the discrete coordinates approach for the three cases. The results showed that the transmission properties can be adjusted by the above three different coupling forms, which indicate our scheme can be used as a single photon switch to control the transmission and reflection of the single photon in the one-dimensional coupled resonant waveguide. We compared the results with [Phys. Rev. A 85, 053840(2012)] and find the advantages.

Kerr-nonlinearity Enhanced Conventional Photon Blockade in Second-order-nonlinear System

In the recent publication [Phys. Rev. B 87, 235319 (2013)], the conventional photon blockade(CPB) was studied for the low frequency mode in a second-order nonlinear system. In this paper, we will study the CPB for the high frequency mode in a second-order nonlinear system with the Kerr nonlinearity filling in the low-frequency cavity. By solving the master equation and calculating the zero-delay-time second order correlation function $g^{(2)}(0)$, strong photon antibunching can be obtained in the high frequency cavity. The optimal condition for strong antibunching is found by analyticcal culations and discussions of the optimal condition are presented. We find that the Kerr-nonlinearities can enhanced the CPB effect. In addition, this scheme is not sensitive to the reservoir temperature, which make the current system easier to implement experimentally.

Approaching Machine Learning Fairness through Adversarial Network

Fairness is becoming a rising concern w.r.t. machine learning model performance. Especially for sensitive fields such as criminal justice and loan decision, eliminating the prediction discrimination towards a certain group of population (characterized by sensitive features like race and gender) is important for enhancing the trustworthiness of model. In this paper, we present a new general framework to improve machine learning fairness. The goal of our model is to minimize the influence of sensitive feature from the perspectives of both the data input and the predictive model. In order to achieve this goal, we reformulate the data input by removing the sensitive information and strengthen model fairness by minimizing the marginal contribution of the sensitive feature. We propose to learn the non-sensitive input via sampling among features and design an adversarial network to minimize the dependence between the reformulated input and the sensitive information. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets suggest that our model achieve better results than related state-of-the-art methods with respect to both fairness metrics and prediction performance.

An Iteratively Re-weighted Method for Problems with Sparsity-Inducing Norms

This work aims at solving the problems with intractable sparsity-inducing norms that are often encountered in various machine learning tasks, such as multi-task learning, subspace clustering, feature selection, robust principal component analysis, and so on. Specifically, an Iteratively Re-Weighted method (IRW) with solid convergence guarantee is provided. We investigate its convergence speed via numerous experiments on real data. Furthermore, in order to validate the practicality of IRW, we use it to solve a concrete robust feature selection model with complicated objective function. The experimental results show that the model coupled with proposed optimization method outperforms alternative methods significantly.

Improvements of computational ghost imaging by using Special-Hadamard patterns

We introduced a new kind of patterns named Special-Hadamard patterns, which could be used as structured illuminations of computational ghost imaging. Special-Hadamard patterns can get a better image quality than Hadamard patterns in a noisy environment. We can completely reconstruct the original object in a noiseless environment by using Special-Hadamard patterns, and the size of object also can be adjusted arbitrarily, these advantages cannot be achieved by other common patterns. We also performed simulations to compare the results of Special Hadamard patterns with the results of Hadamard patterns. We found Special Hadamard patterns can greatly improve the image quality of computational ghost imaging.

Ghost imaging for an occluded object

Imaging for an occluded object is usually a difficult problem, in this letter, we introduce an imaging scheme based on computational ghost imaging, which can obtain the image of a target object behind an obstacle. According to our theoretical analysis, once the distance between the object and the obstacle is far enough, one can obtain the image of the object by using ghost imaging technique. The wavelength of the light source also affects the quality of the reconstructed image. In addition, if the bucket detector is placed far away from the obstacle, a tiny point-like detector without collecting lens can be applied to realize the imaging. These theoretical results above have been verified with our numerical simulations. Furthermore, the robustness of this imaging scheme is also investigated.

Rates of convergence of extremes from skew normal samples

For a skew normal random sequence, convergence rates of the distribution of its partial maximum to the Gumbel extreme value distribution are derived. The asymptotic expansion of the distribution of the normalized maximum is given under an optimal choice of norming constants. We find that the optimal convergence rate of the normalized maximum to the Gumbel extreme value distribution is proportional to $1/\log n$.

Spin squeezing and concurrence

We study the relations between spin squeezing and concurrence, and find that they are qualitatively equivalent for an ensemble of spin-1/2 particles with exchange symmetry and parity, if we adopt the spin squeezing criterion given by the recent work (G. Toth et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 250405 (2007)). This suggests that the spin squeezing has more intimate relations with pairwise entanglement. We exemplify the result by considering a superposition of two Dicke states.

Spin Squeezing, Negative Correlations, and Concurrence in the Quantum Kicked Top Model

We study spin squeezing, negative correlations, and concurrence in the quantum kicked top model. We prove that the spin squeezing and negative correlations are equivalent for spin systems with only symmetric Dicke states populated. We numerically analyze spin squeezing parameters and concurrence in this model, and find that the maximal spin squeezing direction, which refers to the minimal pairwise correlation direction, is strongly influenced by quantum chaos. Entanglement (spin squeezing) sudden death and sudden birth occur alternatively for the periodic and quasi-periodic cases, while only entanglement (spin squeezing) sudden death is found for the chaotic case.

Integrating Existing Software Toolkits into VO System

Virtual Observatory (VO) is a collection of interoperating data archives and software tools. Taking advantages of the latest information technologies, it aims to provide a data-intensively online research environment for astronomers all around the world. A large number of high-qualified astronomical software packages and libraries are powerful and easy of use, and have been widely used by astronomers for many years. Integrating those toolkits into the VO system is a necessary and important task for the VO developers. VO architecture greatly depends on Grid and Web services, consequently the general VO integration route is "Java Ready - Grid Ready - VO Ready". In the paper, we discuss the importance of VO integration for existing toolkits and discuss the possible solutions. We introduce two efforts in the field from China-VO project, "gImageMagick" and " Galactic abundance gradients statistical research under grid environment". We also discuss what additional work should be done to convert Grid service to VO service.
