Band-Order Anomaly at the γ-Al2O3/SrTiO3 Interface Drives the Electron-Mobility Boost

Rich functionalities of transition-metal oxides and their interfaces bear an enormous technological potential. Its realization in practical devices requires, however, a significant improvement of yet relatively low electron mobility in oxide materials. Recently, a mobility boost of about two orders of magnitude has been demonstrated at the spinel/perovskite γ-Al2O3/SrTiO3 interface compared to the paradigm perovskite/perovskite LaAlO3/SrTiO3. We explore the fundamental physics behind this phenomenon from direct measurements of the momentum-resolved electronic structure of this interface using resonant soft-X-ray angle-resolved photoemission. We find an anomaly in orbital ordering of the mobile electrons in γ-Al2O3/SrTiO3 which depopulates electron states in the top STO layer. This rearrangement of the mobile electron system pushes the electron density away from the interface that reduces its overlap with the interfacial defects and weakens the electron-phonon interaction, both effects contributing to the mobility boost. A crystal-field analysis shows that the band order alters owing to the symmetry breaking between the spinel γ-Al2O3 and perovskite SrTiO3. The band-order engineering exploiting the fundamental symmetry properties emerges as another route to boost the performance of oxide devices.

Limit theorems on counting measures for a branching random walk with immigration in a random environment

We consider a branching random walk with immigration in a random environment, where the environment is a stationary and ergodic sequence indexed by time. We focus on the asymptotic properties of the sequence of measures $(Z_n)$ that count the number of particles of generation $n$ located in a Borel set of real line. In the present work, a series of limit theorems related to the above counting measures are established, including a central limit theorem, a moderate deviation principle and a large deviation result as well as a convergence theorem of the free energy.

Some punctured codes of several families of binary linear codes

Two general constructions of linear codes with functions over finite fields have been extensively studied in the literature. The first one is given by $\mathcal{C}(f)=\left\{ {\rm Tr}(af(x)+bx)_{x \in \mathbb{F}_{q^m}^*}: a,b \in \mathbb{F}_{q^m} \right\}$, where $q$ is a prime power, $\bF_{q^m}^*=\bF_{q^m} \setminus \{0\}$, $\tr$ is the trace function from $\bF_{q^m}$ to $\bF_q$, and $f(x)$ is a function from $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$ to $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$ with $f(0)=0$. Almost bent functions, quadratic functions and some monomials on $\bF_{2^m}$ were used in the first construction, and many families of binary linear codes with few weights were obtained in the literature. This paper studies some punctured codes of these binary codes. Several families of binary linear codes with few weights and new parameters are obtained in this paper. Several families of distance-optimal binary linear codes with new parameters are also produced in this paper.

Subfield codes of linear codes from perfect nonlinear functions and their duals

Let $\mathbb{F}_{p^m}$ be a finite field with $p^m$ elements, where $p$ is an odd prime and $m$ is a positive integer. Recently, \cite{Hengar} and \cite{Wang2020} determined the weight distributions of subfield codes with the form $$\mathcal{C}_f=\left\{\left(\left( {\rm Tr}_1^m(a f(x)+bx)+c\right)_{x \in \mathbb{F}_{p^m}}, {\rm Tr}_1^m(a)\right)\, : \, a,b \in \mathbb{F}_{p^m}, c \in \mathbb{F}_p\right\}$$ for $f(x)=x^2$ and $f(x)=x^{p^k+1}$, respectively, where $k$ is a nonnegative integer. In this paper, we further investigate the subfield code $\mathcal{C}_f$ for $f(x)$ being a known perfect nonlinear function over $\mathbb{F}_{p^m}$ and generalize some results in \cite{Hengar,Wang2020}. The weight distributions of the constructed codes are determined by applying the theory of quadratic forms and the properties of perfect nonlinear functions over finite fields. In addition, the parameters of the duals of these codes are also determined. Several examples show that some of our codes and their duals have the best known parameters with respect to the code tables in \cite{MGrassl}. The duals of some proposed codes are optimal with respect to the Sphere Packing bound if $p\geq 5$.

Large-Scale Traffic Signal Control Using a Novel Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning

Finding the optimal signal timing strategy is a difficult task for the problem of large-scale traffic signal control (TSC). Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) is a promising method to solve this problem. However, there is still room for improvement in extending to large-scale problems and modeling the behaviors of other agents for each individual agent. In this paper, a new MARL, called Cooperative double Q-learning (Co-DQL), is proposed, which has several prominent features. It uses a highly scalable independent double Q-learning method based on double estimators and the UCB policy, which can eliminate the over-estimation problem existing in traditional independent Q-learning while ensuring exploration. It uses mean field approximation to model the interaction among agents, thereby making agents learn a better cooperative strategy. In order to improve the stability and robustness of the learning process, we introduce a new reward allocation mechanism and a local state sharing method. In addition, we analyze the convergence properties of the proposed algorithm. Co-DQL is applied on TSC and tested on a multi-traffic signal simulator. According to the results obtained on several traffic scenarios, Co- DQL outperforms several state-of-the-art decentralized MARL algorithms. It can effectively shorten the average waiting time of the vehicles in the whole road system.

A class of two or three weights linear codes and their complete weight enumerators

In the past few years, linear codes with few weights and their weight analysis have been widely studied. In this paper, we further investigate a class of two-weight or three-weight linear codes from defining sets and determine their weight and complete weight enumerators by application of the theory of quadratic forms and some special Weil sums over finite fields. Some punctured codes of the discussed linear codes are optimal or almost optimal with respect to the Griesmer bound. This paper generalizes some results in \cite{ZhuXu2017,Jian2019}.

Hierarchical Graph Matching Network for Graph Similarity Computation

Graph edit distance / similarity is widely used in many tasks, such as graph similarity search, binary function analysis, and graph clustering. However, computing the exact graph edit distance (GED) or maximum common subgraph (MCS) between two graphs is known to be NP-hard. In this paper, we propose the hierarchical graph matching network (HGMN), which learns to compute graph similarity from data. HGMN is motivated by the observation that two similar graphs should also be similar when they are compressed into more compact graphs. HGMN utilizes multiple stages of hierarchical clustering to organize a graph into successively more compact graphs. At each stage, the earth mover distance (EMD) is adopted to obtain a one-to-one mapping between the nodes in two graphs (on which graph similarity is to be computed), and a correlation matrix is also derived from the embeddings of the nodes in the two graphs. The correlation matrices from all stages are used as input for a convolutional neural network (CNN), which is trained to predict graph similarity by minimizing the mean squared error (MSE). Experimental evaluation on 4 datasets in different domains and 4 performance metrics shows that HGMN consistently outperforms existing baselines in the accuracy of graph similarity approximation.

Binary linear codes with few weights from Boolean functions

Boolean functions have very nice applications in cryptography and coding theory, which have led to a lot of research focusing on their applications. The objective of this paper is to construct binary linear codes with few weights from the defining set, which is defined by some special Boolean functions and some additional restrictions. First, we provide two general constructions of binary linear codes with three or four weights from Boolean functions with at most three Walsh transform values and determine the parameters of their dual codes. Then many classes of binary linear codes with explicit weight enumerators are obtained. Some binary linear codes and their duals obtained are optimal or almost optimal. The binary linear codes obtained in this paper may have a special interest in secret sharing schemes, association schemes, strongly regular graphs.

Quantum Higher Order Singular Value Decomposition

Higher order singular value decomposition (HOSVD) is an important tool for analyzing big data in multilinear algebra and machine learning. In this paper, we present two quantum algorithms for HOSVD. Our methods allow one to decompose a tensor into a core tensor containing tensor singular values and some unitary matrices by quantum computers. Compared to the classical HOSVD algorithm, our quantum algorithms provide an exponential speedup. Furthermore, we introduce a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm of HOSVD model applied in recommendation systems.

Quantum tensor singular value decomposition with applications to recommendation systems

In this paper, we present a quantum singular value decomposition algorithm for third-order tensors inspired by the classical algorithm of tensor singular value decomposition (t-svd) and then extend it to order-$p$ tensors. It can be proved that the quantum version of the t-svd for a third-order tensor $\mathcal{A} \in \mathbb{R}^{N\times N \times N}$ achieves the complexity of $\mathcal{O}(N{\rm polylog}(N))$, an exponential speedup compared with its classical counterpart. As an application, we propose a quantum algorithm for recommendation systems which incorporates the contextual situation of users to the personalized recommendation. We provide recommendations varying with contexts by measuring the output quantum state corresponding to an approximation of this user's preferences. This algorithm runs in expected time $\mathcal{O}(N{\rm polylog}(N){\rm poly}(k)),$ if every frontal slice of the preference tensor has a good rank-$k$ approximation. At last, we provide a quantum algorithm for tensor completion based on a different truncation method which is tested to have a good performance in dynamic video completion.

Two classes of $p$-ary linear codes and their duals

Let $\mathbb{F}_{p^m}$ be the finite field of order $p^m$, where $p$ is an odd prime and $m$ is a positive integer. In this paper, we investigate a class of subfield codes of linear codes and obtain the weight distribution of \begin{equation*} \begin{split} \mathcal{C}_k=\left\{\left(\left( {\rm Tr}_1^m\left(ax^{p^k+1}+bx\right)+c\right)_{x \in \mathbb{F}_{p^m}}, {\rm Tr}_1^m(a)\right) : \, a,b \in \mathbb{F}_{p^m}, c \in \mathbb{F}_p\right\}, \end{split} \end{equation*} where $k$ is a nonnegative integer. Our results generalize the results of the subfield codes of the conic codes in \cite{Hengar}. Among other results, we study the punctured code of $\mathcal{C}_k$, which is defined as $$\mathcal{\bar{C}}_k=\left\{\left( {\rm Tr}_1^m\left(a x^{{p^k}+1}+bx\right)+c\right)_{x \in \mathbb{F}_{p^m}} : \, a,b \in \mathbb{F}_{p^m}, \,\,c \in \mathbb{F}_p\right\}.$$ The parameters of these linear codes are new in some cases. Some of the presented codes are optimal or almost optimal. Moreover, let $v_2(\cdot)$ denote the 2-adic order function and $v_2(0)=\infty$, the duals of $\mathcal{C}_k$ and $\mathcal{\bar{C}}_k$ are optimal with respect to the Sphere Packing bound if $p>3$, and the dual of $\mathcal{\bar{C}}_k$ is an optimal ternary linear code for the case $v_2(m)\leq v_2(k)$ if $p=3$ and $m>1$.

Large and moderate deviations for a $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued branching random walk with a random environment in time

We consider a $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued branching random walk with a stationary and ergodic environment $ξ=(ξ_n)$ indexed by time $n\in\mathbb{N}$. Let $Z_n$ be the counting measure of particles of generation $n$. With the help of the uniform convergence of martingale and the multifractal analysis, we establish a large deviation result for the measures $Z_n$ as well as a moderate deviation principle.

Variational inference for coupled Hidden Markov Models applied to the joint detection of copy number variations

Hidden Markov models provide a natural statistical framework for the detection of the copy number variations (CNV) in genomics. In this paper, we consider a Hidden Markov Model involving several correlated hidden processes at the same time. When dealing with a large number of series, maximum likelihood inference (performed classically using the EM algorithm) becomes intractable. We thus propose an approximate inference algorithm based on a variational approach (VEM). A simulation study is performed to assess the performance of the proposed method and an application to the detection of structural variations in plant genomes is presented.

Convergence of martingale and moderate deviations for a branching random walk with a random environment in time

Let $Z_n$ be the counting measure of particles of generation $n$ and $\tilde Z_n(t)=\int e^{tx}Z_n(dx)$ be its Laplace transform. We show the $L^p$ convergence rate and the uniform convergence of the martingale $\tilde Z_n(t)/\mathbb E[\tilde Z_n(t)|ξ]$, and establish a moderate deviation principle for the measures $Z_n$.

Algorithms for Unipolar and Generalized Split Graphs

A graph $G=(V,E)$ is a {\it unipolar graph} if there exits a partition $V=V_1 \cup V_2$ such that, $V_1$ is a clique and $V_2$ induces the disjoint union of cliques. The complement-closed class of {\it generalized split graphs} are those graphs $G$ such that either $G$ {\it or} the complement of $G$ is unipolar. Generalized split graphs are a large subclass of perfect graphs. In fact, it has been shown that almost all $C_5$-free (and hence, almost all perfect graphs) are generalized split graphs. In this paper we present a recognition algorithm for unipolar graphs that utilizes a minimal triangulation of the given graph, and produces a partition when one exists. Our algorithm has running time O($nm^\prime$), where $m^\prime$ is the number of edges in a minimal triangulation of the given graph. Generalized split graphs can recognized via this algorithm in O($nm' + n\OL{m}'$) = O($n^3$) time. We give algorithms on unipolar graphs for finding a maximum independent set and a minimum clique cover in O($n+m$) time and for finding a maximum clique and a minimum proper coloring in O($n^{2.5}/\log n$), when a unipolar partition is given. These algorithms yield algorithms for the four optimization problems on generalized split graphs that have the same worst-case time bound. We also prove that the perfect code problem is NP-Complete for unipolar graphs.

Three-Dimensional Fermiology by Soft-X-Ray ARPES: Origin of Charge Density Waves in VSe2

Electronic structure of crystalline materials is their fundamental characteristic which is the basis of almost all their physical and chemical properties. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is the main experimental tool to study all electronic structure aspects with resolution in k-space. However, its application to three-dimensional (3D) materials suffers from a fundamental problem of ill-defined surface-perpendicular wavevector kz. Here, we achieve sharp definition of kz to enable precise navigation in 3D k space by pushing ARPES into the soft-X-ray photon energy range. Essential to break through the notorious problem of small photoexcitation cross-section was an advanced photon flux performance of our instrumentation. We explore the electronic structure of a transition metal dichalcogenide VSe2 which develops charge density waves (CDWs) possessing exotic 3D character. We experimentally identify nesting of its 3D Fermi surface (FS) as the precursor for these CDWs. Our study demonstrates an immense potential of soft-X-ray ARPES (SX-ARPES) to resolve various aspects of 3D electronic structure.

Modelling and Simulations of Multi-component Lipid Membranes and Open Membranes via Diffusive Interface Approaches

In this paper, phase field models are developed for multi-component vesicle membranes with different lipid compositions and membranes with free boundary. These models are used to simulate the deformation of membranes under the elastic bending energy and the line tension energy with prescribed volume and surface area constraints. By comparing our numerical simulations with recent experiments, it is demonstrated that the phase field models can capture the rich phenomena associated with the membrane transformation, thus it offers great functionality in the simulation and modeling of multicomponent membranes.
