Quantification of ergodicity for Hamilton--Jacobi equations in a dynamic random environment

We study quantitative large-time averages for Hamilton--Jacobi equations in a dynamic random environment that is stationary ergodic and has unit-range dependence in time. Our motivation comes from stochastic growth models related to the tensionless (inviscid) KPZ equation, which can be formulated as Hamilton--Jacobi equations with random forcing. Understanding the large-time behavior of solutions is closely connected to fundamental questions concerning fluctuations and scaling in such growth processes. In this article, we establish, up to slowly varying factors, convergence rates with exponent $1/2$ for the large-time averages of both the solutions and the associated metric problem toward their ergodic limits. Our proof relies crucially on a new almost-Lipschitz regularity theory for the metric problem, which is of independent interest.

Homogenization of non-divergence form operators in i.i.d. random environments

We study random walks in a balanced, i.i.d. random environment in $\mathbb Z^d$ for $d\geq 3$. We establish improved convergence rates for the homogenization of the Dirichlet problem associated with the corresponding non-divergence form difference operators, surpassing the $O(R^{-1})$ rate, which is expected to be optimal for environments with a finite range of dependence. In particular, the improved rates are $O(R^{-3/2})$ when $d=3$, and $O(R^{-2}\log R)$ when $d\geq 4$.

Policy iteration for nonconvex viscous Hamilton--Jacobi equations

We study the convergence rates of policy iteration (PI) for nonconvex viscous Hamilton--Jacobi equations using a discrete space-time scheme, where both space and time variables are discretized. We analyze the case with an uncontrolled diffusion term, which corresponds to a possibly degenerate viscous Hamilton--Jacobi equation. We first obtain an exponential convergent result of PI for the discrete space-time schemes. We then investigate the discretization error.

On the rate of convergence of the martingale central limit theorem in Wasserstein distances

For martingales with a wide range of integrability, we will quantify the rate of convergence of the central limit theorem via Wasserstein distances of order $r$, $1\le r\le 3$. Our bounds are in terms of Lyapunov's coefficients and the $\mathscr L^{r/2}$ fluctuation of the total conditional variances. We will show that our Wasserstein-1 bound is optimal up to a multiplicative constant.

Optimal convergence rates in stochastic homogenization in a balanced random environment

We consider random walks in a uniformly elliptic, balanced, i.i.d. random environment in the integer lattice $Z^d$ for $d\geq 2$ and the corresponding problem of stochastic homogenization of non-divergence form difference operators. We first derive a quantitative law of large numbers for the invariant measure, which is nearly optimal. A mixing property of the field of the invariant measure is then achieved. We next obtain rates of convergence for the homogenization of the Dirichlet problem for non-divergence form operators, which are generically optimal for $d\geq 3$ and nearly optimal when $d=2$. Furthermore, we establish the existence, stationarity and uniqueness properties of the corrector problem for all dimensions $d\ge 2$. Afterwards, we quantify the ergodicity of the environmental process for both the continuous-time and discrete-time random walks, and as a consequence, we get explicit convergence rates for the quenched central limit theorem of the balanced random walk.

Quantitative homogenization in a balanced random environment

We consider discrete non-divergence form difference operators in a random environment and the corresponding process--the random walk in a balanced random environment in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with a finite range of dependence. We first quantify the ergodicity of the environment from the point of view of the particle. As a consequence, we quantify the quenched central limit theorem of the random walk with an algebraic rate. Furthermore, we prove an algebraic rate of convergence for the homogenization of the Dirichlet problems for both elliptic and parabolic non-divergence form difference operators.

Stochastic integrability of heat-kernel bounds for random walks in a balanced random environment

We consider random walks in a balanced i.i.d. random environment in $Z^d$ for $d\ge2$ and the corresponding discrete non-divergence form difference operators. We first obtain an exponential integrability of the heat kernel bounds. We then prove the optimal diffusive decay of the semigroup generated by the heat kernel for $d\ge3$. As a consequence, we deduce a functional central limit theorem for the environment viewed from the particle.

Characterizations of diffusion matrices in homogenization of elliptic equations in nondivergence-form

We characterize diffusion matrices that yield a $L^{\infty}$ convergence rate of $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^2)$ in the theory of periodic homogenization of linear elliptic equations in nondivergence-form. Such type-$\varepsilon^2$ diffusion matrices are of particular interest as the optimal rate of convergence in the generic case is only $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon)$. First, we provide a new class of type-$\varepsilon^2$ diffusion matrices, confirming a conjecture posed in [15]. Then, we give a complete characterization of diagonal diffusion matrices in two dimensions and a systematic study in higher dimensions.

Remarks on optimal rates of convergence in periodic homogenization of linear elliptic equations in non-divergence form

We study and characterize the optimal rates of convergence in periodic homogenization of linear elliptic equations in non-divergence form. We obtain that the optimal rate of convergence is either $O(\varepsilon)$ or $O(\varepsilon^2)$ depending on the diffusion matrix $A$, source term $f$, and boundary data $g$. Moreover, we show that the set of diffusion matrices $A$ that give optimal rate $O(\varepsilon)$ is open and dense in the set of $C^{2,α}$ periodic, symmetric, and positive definite matrices, which means that generically, the optimal rate is $O(\varepsilon)$.

Quenched local central limit theorem for random walks in a time-dependent balanced random environment

We prove a quenched local central limit theorem for continuous-time random walks in $\mathbb Z^d, d\ge 2$, in a uniformly-elliptic time-dependent balanced random environment which is ergodic under space-time shifts. We also obtain Gaussian upper and lower bounds for quenched and (positive and negative) moment estimates of the transition probabilities and asymptotics of the discrete Green function.

Berry-Esseen estimates for regenerative processes under weak moment assumptions

We prove Berry-Esseen type rates of convergence for central limit theorems (CLTs) of regenerative processes which generalize previous results of Bolthausen under weaker moment assumptions. We then show how this general result can be applied to obtain rates of convergence for (1) CLTs for additive functionals of positive recurrent Markov chains under certain conditions on the strong mixing coefficients, and (2) annealed CLTs for certain ballistic random walks in random environments.

Einstein relation for random walks in random environment

In this article, we consider the speed of the random walks in a (uniformly elliptic and i.i.d.) random environment (RWRE) under perturbation. We obtain the derivative of the speed of the RWRE w.r.t. the perturbation, under the assumption that one of the following holds: (i) the environment is balanced and the perturbation satisfies a Kalikow-type ballisticity condition, (ii) the environment satisfies Sznitman's ballisticity condition. This is a generalized version of the Einstein relation for RWRE. Our argument is based on a modification of Lebowitz-Rost's argument developed in [Stochastic Process. Appl. 54 (1994) 183-196] and a new regeneration structure for the perturbed balanced environment.

Einstein relation and steady states for the random conductance model

We consider random walk among iid, uniformly elliptic conductances on $\mathbb Z^d$, and prove the Einstein relation (see Theorem 1). It says that the derivative of the velocity of a biased walk as a function of the bias equals the diffusivity in equilibrium. For fixed bias, we show that there is an invariant measure for the environment seen from the particle. These invariant measures are often called steady states. The Einstein relation follows at least for $d\ge 3$, from an expansion of the steady states as a function of the bias (see Theorem 2), which can be considered our main result. This expansion is proved for $d\ge 3$. In contrast to [11], we need not only convergence of the steady states, but an estimate on the rate of convergence (see Theorem 4).

Diffusivity and Ballistic Behavior of Random Walk in Random Environment

In this thesis, we study the diffusive and ballistic behaviors of random walk in random environment (RWRE) in an integer lattice with dimension at least 2. Our contributions are in three directions: a conditional law of large numbers and regeneration structures for RWRE in Gibbsian environments, quenched invariance principles for balanced elliptic (but non uniformly elliptic) environments, and a proof of the Einstein relation for balanced iid uniformly elliptic environments.

On the limiting velocity of random walks in mixing random environment

We consider random walks in strong-mixing random Gibbsian environments in $\mathbb{Z}^d, d\ge 2$. Based on regeneration arguments, we will first provide an alternative proof of Rassoul-Agha's conditional law of large numbers (CLLN) for mixing environment Rassoul-Agha (2005). Then, using coupling techniques, we show that there is at most one nonzero limiting velocity in high dimensions ($d\ge 5$).

Quenched invariance principle for random walks in balanced random environment

We consider random walks in a balanced random environment in $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\geq 2$. We first prove an invariance principle (for $d\ge2$) and the transience of the random walks when $d\ge 3$ (recurrence when $d=2$) in an ergodic environment which is not uniformly elliptic but satisfies certain moment condition. Then, using percolation arguments, we show that under mere ellipticity, the above results hold for random walks in i.i.d. balanced environments.
