Thermodynamics of a spin-1/2 XYZ Heisenberg chain with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

We study the thermodynamics of an XYZ Heisenberg chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which describes the low-energy behaviors of a one-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled bosonic model in the deep insulating region. The entropy and the specific heat are calculated numerically by the quasi-exact transfer-matrix renormalization group. In particular, in the limit $U^\prime/U\rightarrow\infty$, our model is exactly solvable and thus serves as a benchmark for our numerical method. From our data, we find that for $U^\prime/U>1$ a quantum phase transition between an (anti)ferromagnetic phase and a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase occurs at a finite $θ$, while for $U^\prime/U<1$ a transition between a ferromagnetic phase and a paramagnetic phase happens at $θ=0$. A refined ground-state phase diagram is then deduced from their low-temperature behaviors. Our findings provide an alternative way to detect those distinguishable phases experimentally.

Hidden multipolar orders of dipole-octupole doublets on a triangular lattice

Motivated by the recent development in strong spin-orbit-coupled materials, we consider the dipole-octupole doublets on the triangular lattice. We propose the most general interaction between these unusual local moments. Due to the spin-orbit entanglement and the special form of its wavefunction, the dipole-octupole doublet has a rather peculiar property under the lattice symmetry operation. As a result, the interaction is highly anisotropic in the pseudospin space, but remarkably, is uniform spatially. We analyze the ground state properties of this generic model and emphasize the hidden multipolar orders that emerge from the dipolar and octupolar interactions. We clarify the quantum mutual modulations between the dipolar and octupolar orders. We predict the experimental consequences of the multipolar orders and propose the rare-earth triangular materials as candidate systems for these unusual properties.

Quantum spin ice on the breathing pyrochlore lattice

The Coulombic quantum spin liquid in quantum spin ice is an exotic quantum phase of matter that emerges on the pyrochlore lattice and is currently actively searched for. Motivated by recent experiments on the Yb-based breathing pyrochlore material Ba$_3$Yb$_2$Zn$_5$O$_{11}$, we theoretically study the phase diagram and magnetic properties of the relevant spin model. The latter takes the form of a quantum spin ice Hamiltonian on a breathing pyrochlore lattice, and we analyze the stability of the quantum spin liquid phase in the absence of the inversion symmetry which the lattice breaks explicitly at lattice sites. Using a gauge mean-field approach, we show that the quantum spin liquid occupies a finite region in parameter space. Moreover, there exists a direct quantum phase transition between the quantum spin liquid phase and featureless paramagnets, even though none of theses phases break any symmetry. At nonzero temperature, we show that breathing pyrochlores provide a much broader finite temperature spin liquid regime than their regular counterparts. We discuss the implications of the results for current experiments and make predictions for future experiments on breathing pyrochlores.

Semiclassical ground-state phase diagram and multi-Q phase of a spin-orbit coupled model on triangular lattice

Motivated by recent experiments on the frustrated quantum magnetic compound YbMgGaO4, we study an effective spin model on triangular lattice taking into account the effects of the spin-orbit coupling. We determine the classical ground-state phase diagram of this model, which includes a 120 degree Neel and two collinear antiferromagnetic phases. In the vicinity of the phase boundary between the Neel and collinear phases, we identify three intermediate non-collinear antiferromagnetic phases. In each of them the magnetic moments are ordered at multiple incommensurate wave vector Q values. We further study the effects of quantum fluctuations in this model via a linear spin-wave theory. We find that the spin excitation gap of the non-collinear multi-Q antiferromagnetic state is finite but can be vanishingly small, and this state is unstable to a spin liquid phase under strong quantum fluctuations in some large J_{z+-} regime.

An anisotropic spin model of strong spin-orbit-coupled triangular antiferromagnets

Motivated by the recent experimental progress on the strong spin-orbit-coupled rare earth triangular antiferromagnet, we analyze the highly anisotropic spin model that describes the interaction between the spin-orbit-entangled Kramers' doublet local moments on the triangular lattice. We apply the Luttinger-Tisza method, the classical Monte Carlo simulation, and the self-consistent spin wave theory to analyze the anisotropic spin Hamiltonian. The classical phase diagram includes the 120-degree state and two distinct stripe ordered phases. The frustration is very strong and significantly suppresses the ordering temperature in the regimes close to the phase boundary between two ordered phases. Going beyond the semiclassical analysis, we include the quantum fluctuations of the spin moments within a self-consistent Dyson-Maleev spin-wave treatment. We find that the strong quantum fluctuations melt the magnetic order in the frustrated regions. We explore the magnetic excitations in the three different ordered phases as well as in strong magnetic fields. Our results provide a guidance for the future theoretical study of the generic model and are broadly relevant for strong spin-orbit-coupled triangular antiferromagnets such as YbMgGaO4, RCd3P3, RZn3P3, RCd3As3, RZn3As3, and R2O2CO3.

Rare-earth triangular lattice spin liquid: a single-crystal study of YbMgGaO$_{4}$

YbMgGaO$_{4}$, a structurally perfect two-dimensional triangular lattice with odd number of electrons per unit cell and spin-orbit entangled effective spin-1/2 local moments of Yb$^{3+}$ ions, is likely to experimentally realize the quantum spin liquid ground state. We report the first experimental characterization of single crystal YbMgGaO$_{4}$ samples. Due to the spin-orbit entanglement, the interaction between the neighboring Yb$^{3+}$ moments depends on the bond orientations and is highly anisotropic in the spin space. We carry out the thermodynamic and the electron spin resonance measurements to confirm the anisotropic nature of the spin interaction as well as to quantitatively determine the couplings. Our result is a first step towards the theoretical understanding of the possible quantum spin liquid ground state in this system and sheds new lights on the search of quantum spin liquids in strong spin-orbit coupled insulators.

Ultralow-frequency collective compression mode and strong interlayer coupling in multilayer black phosphorus

The recent renaissance of black phosphorus (BP) as a two-dimensional 2D layered material has generated tremendous interest in its tunable electronic band gap and highly anisotropic transport properties that offer new opportunities for device applications. Many of these outstanding properties are attributed to its unique structural characters that still need elucidation. Here we show Raman measurements that reveal an ultralow-frequency collective compression mode (CCM), which is unprecedented among similar 2D layered materials. This novel CCM indicates an unusually strong interlayer coupling in BP, which is quantitatively supported by a phonon frequency analysis and first-principles calculations. Moreover, the CCM and another branch of low-frequency Raman modes shift sensitively with changing number of layers, allowing an accurate determination of the thickness up to tens of atomic layers, which is considerably higher than those previously achieved by using high-frequency Raman modes. These results offer fundamental insights and practical tools for exploring multilayer BP in new device applications.

Mechanical Manipulations on Electronic Transport of Graphene Nanoribbons

We study the effects of uniaxial strains on the transport properties of the graphene nanoribbons(GNRs) connected with two metallic leads in heterojunctions, using the transfer matrix method. Two typical GNRs with zigzag and armchair boundaries are considered, and the tension is applied either parallel or perpendicular to the ribbon axis. It turns out that the electron-hole symmetry is missing in the gate voltage dependence of the conductance data of the armchair GNRs, while it persists in the zigzag ribbons under any strains. For an armchair GNR with a vertical tension applied, a sharp drop of conductance is found near the critical value of the strain inducing a quantum phase transition, which allows to determine the critical strain accurately via measuring the conductance. In the zigzag ribbon, there exists a range of gate voltage around zero, where the conductance is insensitive to the small horizontal strains. The band structures and low-energy properties are calculated to elucidate the mechanism on the strain effects in GNRs. We expect that our results can be useful in developing graphene-based strain sensors.

Electronic transport through graphene nanoribbons with Stone-Wales reconstruction at edges and interfaces

In this paper, we study the conductance of the graphene nanoribbons(GNRs) in the presence of the Stone-Wales(S-W) reconstruction, using the transfer matrix method. The ribbon is connected with semi-infinite quantum wires as the leads. The S-W reconstruction occurs on the edges and the interfaces between the electrodes and ribbon. When the reconstruction occurs on the edges, the conductance is suppressed considerably if the gate voltage $V_g$ takes intermediate values around $|V_{g}|\sim t_0$($t_0$ being the hopping amplitude of grahene) in both positive and negative energy regions. In contrast, if $V_g$ is close to the Dirac point or the band edges, the conductance is relatively insensitive to the edge reconstruction. The effect of edge reconstruction become less important with increasing ribbon width as expected. The S-W reconstruction occurs also possibly at the interfaces. In this case, the reconstruction suppresses identically the conductance in the entire range of $V_g$ for armchair GNRs. For the zigzag GNRs, the conductance is strongly suppressed in the negative energy region however the change of the conductance is relatively small in the positive energy region. We also analyze the transmission coefficients as functions of the channel index(the transverse momentum $k_y$ of the leads) for the neutral armchair GNRs with interface defects. Interestingly, there are two transmission peaks appearing at $k_{y}=π/3$ and $k_{y}=2π/3$ due to the unit cell doubling.

Anomalous valley polarization in monolayer MoSe2

Modern electronic devices heavily rely on the accurate control of charge and spin of electrons. The emergence of controllable valley degree of freedom brings new possibilities and presents a promising prospect towards valleytronics. Recently, valley excitation selected by chiral optical pumping has been observed in monolayer MoS2. In this work, we report polarized photoluminescence (PL) measurements for monolayer MoSe2, another member of the family of transition-metal-dichalcogenides (MX2), and observe drastic difference from the outcomes of MoS2. In particular, we identify a valley polarization (VP) up to 70% for B exciton, while that for A exciton is less than 3%. Besides, we also find a small but finite negative VP for A- trion. These results reveal several new intra- and inter-valley scattering processes which significantly affect valley polarization, hence provide new insights into exciton physics in monolayer MX2 and possible valleytronic applications.

Ferromagnetism in a two-component Bose-Hubbard model with a synthetic spin-orbit coupling

We study the effect of the synthetic spin-orbit coupling in a two-component Bose-Hubbard model in one dimension by employing the density-matrix renormalization group method. A ferromagnetic long-range order emerges in both Mott insulator and superfluid phases resulting from the spontaneous breaking of the $Z_2$ symmetry, when the spin-orbit coupling term becomes comparable to the hopping kinetic energy and the inter-component interaction is smaller than the intra-one as well. This novel effect is expected to be detectable with the present realization of the synthetic spin-orbit coupling in experiments.

The evolution of magnetic structure driven by a synthetic spin-orbit coupling in two-component Bose-Hubbard model

We study the evolution of magnetic structure driven by a synthetic spin-orbit coupling in a one-dimensional two-component Bose-Hubbard model. In addition to the Mott insulator-superfluid transition, we found in Mott insulator phases a transition from a gapped ferromagnetic phase to a gapless chiral phase by increasing the strength of spin-orbit coupling. Further increasing the spin-orbit coupling drives a transition from the gapless chiral phase to a gapped antiferromagnetic phase. These magnetic structures persist in superfluid phases. In particular, in the chiral Mott insulator and chiral superfluid phases, incommensurability is observed in characteristic correlation functions. These unconventional Mott insulator phase and superfluid phase demonstrate the novel effects arising from the competition between the kinetic energy and the spin-orbit coupling.

Finite-temperature decoherence of spin states in a $\texttt{\{}\emph{Cu}_3\texttt{\}}$ single molecular magnet

We investigate the quantum evolution of spin states of a single molecular magnet in a local electric field. The decoherence of a $\texttt{\{}\emph{Cu}_3\texttt{\}}$ single molecular magnet weakly coupled to a thermal bosonic environment can be analyzed by the spin-boson model. Using the finite-temperature time-convolutionless quantum master equation, we obtain the analytical expression of the reduced density matrix of the system in the secular approximation. The suppressed and revived dynamical behavior of the spin states are presented by the oscillation of the chirality spin polarization on the time scale of the correlation time of the environment. The quantum decoherence can be effectively restrained with the help of the manipulation of local electric field and the environment spectral density function. Under the influence of the dissipation, the pointer states measured by the von Neumann entropy are calculated to manifest the entanglement property of the system-environment model.

Indivisible quantum evolution of a driven open spin-$S$ system

Using a recently proposed measure for divisibility of a dynamical map, we study the non-Markovian character of a quantum evolution of a driven spin-$S$ system weakly coupled to a bosonic bath. The complete tomographic knowledge about the dynamics of the open system is obtained by the time-convolutionless master equation in the secular approximation. The derived equation can be applied to a wide range of spin-boson models with the Hermitian or non-Hermitian coupling operator in the system-environment interaction Hamiltonian. Besides the influence of the environmental spectral densities, the tunneling energy of the system Hamiltonian can affect the measure of quantum non-Markovianity. It is found that the non-Markovian feature of a dynamical map of a high-dimension spin system is noticeable in contrast to that of a low-dimension spin system.

Accurate determination of the Gaussian transition in spin-1 chains with single-ion anisotropy

The Gaussian transition in the spin-one Heisenberg chain with single-ion anisotropy is extremely difficult to treat, both analytically and numerically. We introduce an improved DMRG procedure with strict error control, which we use to access very large systems. By considering the bulk entropy, we determine the Gaussian transition point to 4-digit accuracy, $D_{c}/J = 0.96845(8)$, resolving a long-standing debate in quantum magnetism. With this value, we obtain high-precision data for the critical behavior of quantities including the ground-state energy, gap, and transverse string-order parameter, and for the critical exponent, $ν= 1.472(2)$. Applying our improved technique at $J_{z} = 0.5$ highlights essential differences in critical behavior along the Gaussian transition line.

Exact results for intrinsic electronic transport in graphene

We present exact results for the electronic transport properties of graphene sheets connected to two metallic electrodes. Our results, obtained by transfer-matrix methods, are valid for all sheet widths and lengths. In the limit of large width-to-length ratio relevant to recent experiments, we find a Dirac-point conductivity of $2e^2/\sqrt{3}h$ and a sub-Poissonian Fano factor of $2 - 3\sqrt{3}/π\simeq 0.346$ for armchair graphene; for the zigzag geometry these are respectively 0 and 1. Our results reflect essential effects from both the topology of graphene and the electronic structure of the leads, giving a complete microscopic understanding of the unique intrinsic transport in graphene.

Low-energy properties of anisotropic two-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg models in staggered magnetic fields

We present a systematic study of the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model in staggered magnetic fields in two dimensions (2D). To mimic real materials, we consider a system of coupled, antiferromagnetic chains, whose interchain interaction can be either ferro- or antiferromagnetic. When the staggered field is commensurate with the magnetic interactions, an energy gap opens immediately and follows a power law as a function of the applied field, similar to the situation in 1D. When the field competes with the interactions, a quantum phase transition (QPT) occurs from a gapless, magnetically ordered phase at low fields to a gapped, disordered regime. We use a continuous-time Monte Carlo method to compute the staggered moment of the ordered phases and the spin gap of the disordered phases. We deduce the phase diagrams as functions of the anisotropy ratio and the applied field, and calculate the scaling behavior of the models in both quantities. We show that in the competitive case, the staggered field acts to maintain a regime of quasi-1D behavior around the QPT, and we discuss as a consequence the nature of the crossover from 1D to 2D physics.

Multi-step approach to microscopic models for frustrated quantum magnets - the case of the natural mineral azurite

The natural mineral azurite Cu$_3$(CO$_3$)$_2$(OH)$_2$ is a frustrated magnet displaying unusual and controversially discussed magnetic behavior. Motivated by the lack of a unified description for this system, we perform a theoretical study based on density functional theory as well as state-of-the-art numerical many-body calculations. We propose an effective generalized spin-1/2 diamond chain model which provides a consistent description of experiments: low-temperature magnetization, inelastic neutron scattering, nuclear magnetic resonance measurements, magnetic susceptibility as well as new specific heat measurements. With this study we demonstrate that the balanced combination of first principles with powerful many-body methods successfully describes the behavior of this frustrated material.
