Chiral Spin-Liquid-Like State in Pyrochlore Iridate Thin Films

The pyrochlore iridates have become ideal platforms to unravel fascinating correlated and topolog?ical phenomena that stem from the intricate interplay among strong spin-orbit coupling, electronic correlations, lattice with geometric frustration, and itinerancy of the 5d electrons. The all-in-all?out antiferromagnetic state, commonly considered as the magnetic ground state, can be dramatically altered in reduced dimensionality, leading to exotic or hidden quantum states inaccessible in bulk. Here, by means of magnetotransport, resonant elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering experiments, we discover an emergent quantum disordered state in (111) Y2Ir2O7 thin films (thickness less than 30 nm) per?sisting down to 5 K, characterized by dispersionless magnetic excitations. The anomalous Hall effect observed below an onset temperature near 135 K corroborates the presence of chiral short-range spin configurations expressed in non-zero scalar spin chirality, breaking the macroscopic time-reversal symmetry. The origin of this chiral state is ascribed to the restoration of magnetic frustration on the pyrochlore lattice in lower dimensionality, where the competing exchange interactions together with enhanced quantum fluctuations suppress any long-range order and trigger spin-liquid-like behavior with degenerate ground-state manifold.

LongWanjuan: Towards Systematic Measurement for Long Text Quality

The quality of training data are crucial for enhancing the long-text capabilities of foundation models. Despite existing efforts to refine data quality through heuristic rules and evaluations based on data diversity and difficulty, there's a lack of systematic approaches specifically tailored for assessing long texts. Addressing this gap, our work systematically measures the quality of long texts by evaluating three fundamental linguistic dimensions: coherence, cohesion, and complexity. Drawing inspiration from the aforementioned three dimensions, we introduce a suite of metrics designed to evaluate the quality of long texts, encompassing both statistical and pre-trained language model-based ones. Leveraging these metrics, we present LongWanjuan, a bilingual dataset specifically tailored to enhance the training of language models for long-text tasks with over 160B tokens. In LongWanjuan, we categorize long texts into holistic, aggregated, and chaotic types, enabling a detailed analysis of long-text quality. Furthermore, we devise a data mixture recipe that strategically balances different types of long texts within LongWanjuan, leading to significant improvements in model performance on long-text tasks. The code and dataset are available at https://github.com/OpenLMLab/LongWanjuan.

Weak antilocalization and localization in Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ (111) thin films by reactive solid phase epitaxy

Thin films of the pyrochlore iridates along the [111] direction have drawn significant attention to investigate exotic correlated topological phenomena. Here, we report the fabrication of Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ thin films via reactive solid phase epitaxy using the pulsed laser deposition technique. We mainly focus on the transport properties of the films below the magnetic phase transition at 105 K. Analyses on the temperature and the field dependences of resistivity unveil the presence of weak antilocalization, a characteristic signature of the Weyl semimetallic state that has been "buried" by magnetism. Moreover, it is noteworthy that the contribution from many-body interactions in Eu2Ir2O7 thin films is enhanced at lower temperatures and competes with the weak antilocalization effect, and eventually drives the crossover to weak localization at 2 K.

CoLLiE: Collaborative Training of Large Language Models in an Efficient Way

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly pivotal in a wide range of natural language processing tasks. Access to pre-trained models, courtesy of the open-source community, has made it possible to adapt these models to specific applications for enhanced performance. However, the substantial resources required for training these models necessitate efficient solutions. This paper introduces CoLLiE, an efficient library that facilitates collaborative training of large language models using 3D parallelism, parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) methods, and optimizers such as Lion, Adan, Sophia, LOMO and AdaLomo. With its modular design and comprehensive functionality, CoLLiE offers a balanced blend of efficiency, ease of use, and customization. CoLLiE has proven superior training efficiency in comparison with prevalent solutions in pre-training and fine-tuning scenarios. Furthermore, we provide an empirical evaluation of the correlation between model size and GPU memory consumption under different optimization methods, as well as an analysis of the throughput. Lastly, we carry out a comprehensive comparison of various optimizers and PEFT methods within the instruction-tuning context. CoLLiE is available at https://github.com/OpenLMLab/collie.

Magnetism and berry phase manipulation in an emergent structure of perovskite ruthenate by (111) strain engineering

The interplay among symmetry of lattices, electronic correlations, and Berry phase of the Bloch states in solids has led to fascinating quantum phases of matter. A prototypical system is the magnetic Weyl candidate SrRuO3, where designing and creating electronic and topological properties on artificial lattice geometry is highly demanded yet remains elusive. Here, we establish an emergent trigonal structure of SrRuO3 by means of heteroepitaxial strain engineering along the [111] crystallographic axis. Distinctive from bulk, the trigonal SrRuO3 exhibits a peculiar XY-type ferromagnetic ground state, with the coexistence of high-mobility holes likely from linear Weyl bands and low-mobility electrons from normal quadratic bands as carriers. The presence of Weyl nodes are further corroborated by capturing intrinsic anomalous Hall effect, acting as momentum-space sources of Berry curvatures. The experimental observations are consistent with our first-principles calculations, shedding light on the detailed band topology of trigonal SrRuO3 with multiple pairs of Weyl nodes near the Fermi level. Our findings signify the essence of magnetism and Berry phase manipulation via lattice design and pave the way towards unveiling nontrivial correlated topological phenomena.

Transfer and Active Learning for Dissonance Detection: Addressing the Rare-Class Challenge

While transformer-based systems have enabled greater accuracies with fewer training examples, data acquisition obstacles still persist for rare-class tasks -- when the class label is very infrequent (e.g. < 5% of samples). Active learning has in general been proposed to alleviate such challenges, but choice of selection strategy, the criteria by which rare-class examples are chosen, has not been systematically evaluated. Further, transformers enable iterative transfer-learning approaches. We propose and investigate transfer- and active learning solutions to the rare class problem of dissonance detection through utilizing models trained on closely related tasks and the evaluation of acquisition strategies, including a proposed probability-of-rare-class (PRC) approach. We perform these experiments for a specific rare class problem: collecting language samples of cognitive dissonance from social media. We find that PRC is a simple and effective strategy to guide annotations and ultimately improve model accuracy while transfer-learning in a specific order can improve the cold-start performance of the learner but does not benefit iterations of active learning.

Engineered Kondo screening and nonzero Berry phase in SrTiO3/LaTiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures

Controlling the interplay between localized spins and itinerant electrons at the oxide interfaces can lead to exotic magnetic states. Here we devise SrTiO3/LaTiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures with varied thickness of the LaTiO3 layer (n monolayers) to investigate the magnetic interactions in the two-dimensional electron gas system. The heterostructures exhibit significant Kondo effect when the LaTiO3 layer is rather thin (n = 2, 10), manifesting the strong interaction between the itinerant electrons and the localized magnetic moments at the interfaces, while the Kondo effect is greatly inhibited when n = 20. Notably, distinct Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are observed and a nonzero Berry phase of π is extracted when the LaTiO3 layer is rather thin (n = 2, 10), which is absent in the heterostructure with thicker LaTiO3 layer (n = 20). The observed phenomena are consistently interpreted as a result of sub-band splitting and symmetry breaking due to the interplay between the interfacial Rashba spin-orbit coupling and the magnetic orderings in the heterostructures. Our findings provide a route for exploring and manipulating nontrivial electronic band structures at complex oxide interfaces.

Epitaxial stabilization of thin films of the frustrated Ge-based spinels

Frustrated magnets can host numerous exotic many-body quantum and topological phenomena. GeNi$_2$O$_4$ is a three dimensional $S=1$ frustrated magnet with an unusual two-stage transition to the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic ground state, while GeCu$_2$O$_4$ is a high-pressure phase with a strongly tetragonally elongated spinel structure and magnetic lattice formed by $S=1/2$ CuO$_2$ linear chains with frustrated exchange interactions and exotic magnetic behavior. Here we report on the first thin-film epitaxial stabilization of these two compounds. Developed growth mode, surface morphology, crystal structure and copper valence state were characterized by in-situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction, atomic force microscopy, X-ray reflectivity, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and resonant X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Our results pave an alternative route to the comprehensive investigation of the puzzling magnetic properties of these compounds and exploration of novel emergent features driven by strain.

A magnetic Weyl semimetallic phase in thin films of Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$

The interplay between electronic interactions and strong spin-orbit coupling is expected to create a plethora of fascinating correlated topological states of quantum matter. Of particular interest are magnetic Weyl semimetals originally proposed in the pyrochlore iridates, which are only expected to reveal their topological nature in thin film form. To date, however, direct experimental demonstrations of these exotic phases remain elusive, due to the lack of usable single crystals and the insufficient quality of available films. Here, we report on the discovery of the long-sought magnetic Weyl semi-metallic phase in (111)-oriented Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ high-quality epitaxial thin films. The topological magnetic state shows an intrinsic anomalous Hall effect with colossal coercivity but vanishing net magnetization, which emerges below the onset of a peculiar magnetic phase with all-in-all-out antiferromagnetic ordering. The observed anomalous Hall conductivity arises from the non-zero Berry curvature emanated by Weyl node pairs near the Fermi level that act as sources and sinks of Berry flux, activated by broken cubic crystal symmetry at the top and bottom terminations of the thin film.

Berry phase manipulation in ultrathin SrRuO$_3$ films

A notion of the Berry phase is a powerful means to unravel the non-trivial role of topology in various novel phenomena observed in chiral magnetic materials and structures. A celebrated example is the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) driven by the non-vanishing Berry phase in the momentum space. As the AHE is highly dependent on details of the band structure near the Fermi edge, the Berry phase and AHE can be altered in thin films whose chemical potential is tunable by dimensionality and disorder. Here, we demonstrate that in ultrathin SrRuO$_3$ films the Berry phase can be effectively manipulated by the effects of disorder on the intrinsic Berry phase contribution to the AHE, which is corroborated by our numerically exact calculations. In addition, our findings provide ample experimental evidence for the superficial nature of the topological Hall effect attribution to the protected spin texture and instead lend strong support to the multi-channel AHE scenario in ultrathin SrRuO$_3$.

Numerology Selection for OFDM Systems Based on Deep Neural Networks

In order to support diverse scenarios and deployments, the numerology of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is defined for the parametrization of subcarrier spacing and cyclic prefix (CP). The time-frequency dispersion of mobile radio channels and the channel noise result in different performance deterioration in different numerologies. In this letter, we propose a deep neutral network (DNN) approach for numerology selection of OFDM systems. Considering the inter-symbol interference (ISI), inter-carrier interference (ICI) and noise level, the SNR loss is established as the objective to be minimized. We extract the power delay profile, mobile velocity and noise power as the input features to the DNN. The proposed DNN learns from the channel characteristics to obtain the optimal numerology selection. Simulation results show that the proposed DNN achieves better performance than the existing methods. The decision boundaries of different numerologies are also illustrated to show the application range according to the channel characteristics.

Epitaxial stabilization of (111)-oriented frustrated quantum pyrochlore thin films

Frustrated rare-earth pyrochlore titanates, Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, and Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ have been proposed as promising candidates to realize quantum spin ice (QSI). Multiple exotic quantum phases, including Coulombic ferromagnet, quantum valence-bond solid, and quadrupolar ordering, have been predicted to emerge in the QSI state upon application of a (111)-oriented external magnetic field. Here, we report on the primal successful layer-by-layer growth of ultra-thin films of frustrated quantum pyrochlores, R$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ (R = Er, Yb, and Tb), along the (111) direction. We confirm their high crystallinity and proper chemical composition by a combination of methods, including in-situ RHEED, x-ray diffraction, reciprocal space mapping, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The availability of large area (111)-oriented QSI structures with planar geometry offers a new complementary to the bulk platform to explore strain and magnetic field dependent properties in the quasi-2D limit.

Orientation-dependent stabilization of MgCr$_2$O$_4$ spinel thin films

AB$_2$O$_4$ normal spinels with a magnetic B site can host a variety of magnetic and orbital frustrations leading to spin-liquid phases and field-induced phase transitions. Here we report the first epitaxial growth of (111)-oriented MgCr$_2$O$_4$ thin films. By characterizing the structural and electronic properties of films grown along (001) and (111) directions, the influence of growth orientation has been studied. Despite distinctly different growth modes observed during deposition, the comprehensive characterization reveals no measurable disorder in the cation distribution nor multivalency issue for Cr ions in either orientation. Contrary to a naive expectation, the (111) stabilized films exhibit a smoother surface and a higher degree of crystallinity than (001)-oriented films. The preference in growth orientation is explained within the framework of heteroepitaxial stabilization in connection to a significantly lower (111) surface energy. These findings open broad opportunities in the fabrication of 2D kagome-triangular heterostructures with emergent magnetic behavior inaccessible in bulk crystals.

Perspective: Strongly correlated and topological states in [111] grown transition metal oxide thin films and heterostructures

We highlight recent advances in the theory, materials fabrication, and experimental characterization of strongly correlated and topological states in [111] oriented transition metal oxide thin films and heterostructures, which are notoriously difficult to realize compared to their [001] oriented counterparts. We focus on two classes of complex oxides, with the chemical formula ABO3 and A2B2O7, where the B sites are occupied by an open-shell transition metal ion with a local moment, and the A sites are typically a rare earth. The [111] oriented quasi-two-dimensional lattices derived from these parent compound lattices can exhibit peculiar geometries and symmetries, namely, a buckled honeycomb lattice, as well as kagome and triangular lattices. These lattice motifs form the basis for emergent strongly correlated and topological states expressed in exotic magnetism, various forms of orbital ordering, topological insulators, topological semimetals, quantum anomalous Hall insulators, and quantum spin liquids. For transition metal ions with high atomic number, spin-orbit coupling plays a significant role and may give rise to additional topological features in the electronic band structure and in the spectrum of magnetic excitations. We conclude the Perspective by articulating open challenges and opportunities in this actively developing field.

Enhanced LMMSE Estimation Capable of Selecting Parameters

In the linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimation for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, the problem about the determination of the algorithm's parameters, especially those related with channel frequency response (CFR) correlation, has not been readily solved yet. Although many approaches have been proposed to determine the statistic parameters, it is hard to choose the best one within those approaches in the design phase, since every approach has its own most suitable application conditions and the real channel condition is unpredictable. In this paper, we propose an enhance LMMSE estimation capable of selecting parameters by itself. To this end, sampled noise MSE is first proposed to evaluate the practical performance of interpolation. Based on this evaluation index, a novel parameter comparison scheme is proposed to determine the parameters which can endow LMMSE estimation best performance within a parameter set. After that, the structure of the enhanced LMMSE is illustrated, and it is applied in OFDM systems. Besides, the issues about theoretical analysis on accuracy of the parameter comparison scheme, the parameter set design and algorithm complexity are explained in detail. At last, our analyses and performance of the proposed estimation method are demonstrated by simulation experiments.

Peak-to-Average Power Ratio Analysis for OFDM-Based Mixed-Numerology Transmissions

In this paper, the probability distribution of the peak to average power ratio (PAPR) is analyzed for the mixed numerologies transmission based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). State of the art theoretical analysis implicitly assumes continuous and symmetric frequency spectrum of OFDM signals. Thus, it is difficult to be applied to the mixed-numerology system due to its complication. By comprehensively considering system parameters, including numerology, bandwidth and power level of each subband, we propose a generic analytical distribution function of PAPR for continuous-time signals based on level-crossing theory. The proposed approach can be applied to both conventional single numerology and mixed-numerology systems. In addition, it also ensures the validity for the noncontinuous-OFDM (NC-OFDM). Given the derived distribution expression, we further investigate the effect of power allocation between different numerologies on PAPR. Simulations are presented and show the good match of the proposed theoretical results.

PAPR Reduction Using Iterative Clipping/Filtering and ADMM Approaches for OFDM-Based Mixed-Numerology Systems

Mixed-numerology transmission is proposed to support a variety of communication scenarios with diverse requirements. However, as the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) remains as the basic waveform, the peak-to average power ratio (PAPR) problem is still cumbersome. In this paper, based on the iterative clipping and filtering (ICF) and optimization methods, we investigate the PAPR reduction in the mixed-numerology systems. We first illustrate that the direct extension of classical ICF brings about the accumulation of inter-numerology interference (INI) due to the repeated execution. By exploiting the clipping noise rather than the clipped signal, the noise-shaped ICF (NS-ICF) method is then proposed without increasing the INI. Next, we address the in-band distortion minimization problem subject to the PAPR constraint. By reformulation, the resulting model is separable in both the objective function and the constraints, and well suited for the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) approach. The ADMM-based algorithms are then developed to split the original problem into several subproblems which can be easily solved with closed-form solutions. Furthermore, the applications of the proposed PAPR reduction methods combined with filtering and windowing techniques are also shown to be effective.

Quantum spin liquids by geometric lattice design

On a lattice composed of triangular plaquettes where antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between localized spins cannot be simultaneously satisfied, the system becomes geometrically frustrated with magnetically disordered phases remarkably different from a simple paramagnet. Spin liquid belongs to one of these exotic states, in which a macroscopic degeneracy of the ground state gives rise to the rich spectrum of collective phenomena. Here, we report on the discovery of a new magnetic state in the heterostructures derived from a single unit cell (111)-oriented spinel CoCr2O4 sandwiched between nonmagnetic Al2O3 spacers. The artificial quasi-two-dimensional material composed of three triangle and one kagome atomic planes shows a degree of magnetic frustration which is almost two orders of magnitude enlarged compared to the bulk crystals. Combined resonant X-ray absorption and torque magnetometry measurements confirm that the designer system exhibits no sign of spin ordering down to 30 mK, implying a possible realization of a quantum spin liquid state in the two dimensional limit.
