Human-Centric Intelligence in the Era of Foundation Models: A Survey

Human-centric intelligence is evolving in the foundation-model era, with growing emphasis on scale, transferability, and general-purpose modeling. Yet it has not fully integrated with foundation models to achieve the comparable progress seen in them. More importantly, recent advances across this broad landscape remain fragmented across tasks, modalities, and research communities, leaving their intrinsic conceptual and methodological connections unclear. To bridge these divides and rethink human-centric intelligence in the foundation-model era, we introduce a full-spectrum human context taxonomy that integrates six interconnected levels by viewing humans as observable subjects through visual appearance and spatial geometry, as dynamic actors through kinematic dynamics and interaction modeling, and as situated agents through world simulation and embodied agency. We next present the methodological foundations of the field, covering human-centric data families, computational architecture paradigms, and representative training and inference optimization strategies. We then systematically review representative methods across these levels and organize the associated datasets, benchmarks, and evaluation metrics. We further discuss open challenges and promising research directions toward human-centric intelligence that is scalable, trustworthy, physically grounded, and deployable, aiming to provide a coherent framework and practical reference for advancing the field. Finally, we provide a systematically organized and continuously updated collection of human-centric AI literature and resources on our project page.

Should children follow their parents' research paths? Intergenerational research continuity and divergence in academic families

How academic advantages are transmitted within families is usually studied as occupational inheritance, but it is not clear whether scholarly research orientations persist across generations and if it is an advantage when it does. To address this, we link Wikidata kinship records with OpenAlex bibliometric profiles to study 3,229 documented parent-child scholar pairs and 488,659 publications. Field-level research similarity was evident but not universal: whilst the median similarity was 0.546, 25.3% of parent-child pairs had no Field overlap (i.e., similarity 0). These pairs were substantially more similar than publication-period-matched comparison pairs (median 0.098). Direct academic interaction was uncommon: 10.4% of parent-child pairs had co-authored, 9.8% of children had cited their parents, and 6.9% of parents had cited their children. Nevertheless, each 0.1 increase in Field similarity was associated with 38-39% higher adjusted odds of co-authorship and cross-citation. There was also intergenerational continuity in academic achievement and recognition. Parents' publication volume and field-normalized citation impact were positively associated with those of their children. Children of national academy members had approximately twice the odds of becoming national academy members themselves (Odds Ratio = 2.04), while children of prizewinning parents had 46% higher odds of winning prizes (Odds Ratio = 1.46). However, children of national academy members showed lower research similarity to their parents. Greater research differentiation was associated with higher field-normalized citation impact among children, but not with publication output or higher odds of academic recognition. Academic families therefore appear to transmit resources and advantages with the sole exception that diverging from parental fields seems to confer a citation advantage.

Science discussions of retracted articles on Bluesky: public scrutiny or misinformation spreading?

Post-publication peer review (PPPR) has emerged as an important supplement to traditional peer review, with social media playing a growing role in publicising potential problems in published research. However, it remains unclear whether social media discussions of retracted articles primarily reflect good practices, such as exposing flaws and acknowledging retraction status, or bad practices, such as overlooking retractions and continuing to disseminate scientific misinformation. In this study, we collected Bluesky posts referencing scholarly articles from Altmetric and retrieved metadata for the referenced articles using OpenAlex. The final dataset included 284 retracted articles with 79 pre-retraction posts and 857 post-retraction posts, 59 retraction notices with 186 posts, and 609,461 non-retracted articles with 1,344,756 posts. We manually coded Bluesky posts discussing retracted articles to identify instances of good and bad practice. The results show that posts demonstrating good practice (89.9%) substantially outnumbered those demonstrating bad practice (10.1%). Posts reflecting good practice also had more user engagement. In the pre-retraction phase, good practice posts constituted a slight minority (43.0%), whereas in the post-retraction phase they were dominant (94.2%). Most negative posts in the pre-retraction phase (90.0%) had good practice while only 17.3% positive posts in the post-retraction phase showed bad practice. Thus, sentiment analysis can be helpful to filter posts that could flag potential flaws before retraction, but it may struggle to accurately identify the spread of misinformation after retraction. More broadly, this study highlights the potential of Bluesky to support responsible scientific communication, public scrutiny, and research integrity.

Your One-Stop Solution for AI-Generated Video Detection

Recent advances in generative modeling can create remarkably realistic synthetic videos, making it increasingly difficult for humans to distinguish them from real ones and necessitating reliable detection methods. However, two key limitations hinder the development of this field. \textbf{From the dataset perspective}, existing datasets are often limited in scale and constructed using outdated or narrowly scoped generative models, making it difficult to capture the diversity and rapid evolution of modern generative techniques. Moreover, the dataset construction process frequently prioritizes quantity over quality, neglecting essential aspects such as semantic diversity, scenario coverage, and technological representativeness. \textbf{From the benchmark perspective}, current benchmarks largely remain at the stage of dataset creation, leaving many fundamental issues and in-depth analysis yet to be systematically explored. Addressing this gap, we propose AIGVDBench, a benchmark designed to be comprehensive and representative, covering \textbf{31} state-of-the-art generation models and over \textbf{440,000} videos. By executing more than \textbf{1,500} evaluations on \textbf{33} existing detectors belonging to four distinct categories. This work presents \textbf{8 in-depth analyses} from multiple perspectives and identifies \textbf{4 novel findings} that offer valuable insights for future research. How is science discussed on Bluesky?

Amid the migration of academics from X, the social media platform Bluesky has emerged as a potential alternative. To assess its viability and relevance for science communication, this study presents the first large-scale analysis of scholarly article dissemination on Bluesky, exploring its potential as a new source of social media metrics. We collected and analysed over 2.6 million Bluesky posts referencing 532,302 scholarly articles from January 2023 to July 2025, integrating metadata from the OpenAlex database. Temporal trends, disciplinary coverage, language use, textual characteristics, and user engagement were examined. A sharp increase in scholarly activity on Bluesky was observed from November 2024 to January 2025, coinciding with broader academic shifts away from X. As on X, Bluesky posts primarily concern the health, social, and environmental sciences and are predominantly written in English. Nevertheless, Bluesky posts demonstrate substantially higher levels of interaction (likes, reposts, replies, and quotes) and greater textual originality than previously reported for X, suggesting both stronger interactive and more interpretive engagement. These findings highlight Bluesky's emerging role as a credible platform for science communication and a promising source for altmetrics. The platform may facilitate not only early visibility of research outputs but also more meaningful scholarly dialogue in the evolving social media landscape.

Boosting Bot Detection via Heterophily-Aware Representation Learning and Prototype-Guided Cluster Discovery

Detecting social media bots is essential for maintaining the security and trustworthiness of social networks. While contemporary graph-based detection methods demonstrate promising results, their practical application is limited by label reliance and poor generalization capability across diverse communities. Generative Graph Self-Supervised Learning (GSL) presents a promising paradigm to overcome these limitations, yet existing approaches predominantly follow the homophily assumption and fail to capture the global patterns in the graph, which potentially diminishes their effectiveness when facing the challenges of interaction camouflage and distributed deployment in bot detection scenarios. To this end, we propose BotHP, a generative GSL framework tailored to boost graph-based bot detectors through heterophily-aware representation learning and prototype-guided cluster discovery. Specifically, BotHP leverages a dual-encoder architecture, consisting of a graph-aware encoder to capture node commonality and a graph-agnostic encoder to preserve node uniqueness. This enables the simultaneous modeling of both homophily and heterophily, effectively countering the interaction camouflage issue. Additionally, BotHP incorporates a prototype-guided cluster discovery pretext task to model the latent global consistency of bot clusters and identify spatially dispersed yet semantically aligned bot collectives. Extensive experiments on two real-world bot detection benchmarks demonstrate that BotHP consistently boosts graph-based bot detectors, improving detection performance, alleviating label reliance, and enhancing generalization capability.

Knowledge Rumination for Client Utility Evaluation in Heterogeneous Federated Learning

Federated Learning (FL) allows several clients to cooperatively train machine learning models without disclosing the raw data. In practical applications, asynchronous FL (AFL) can address the straggler effect compared to synchronous FL. However, Non-IID data and stale models pose significant challenges to AFL, as they can diminish the practicality of the global model and even lead to training failures. In this work, we propose a novel AFL framework called Federated Historical Learning (FedHist), which effectively addresses the challenges posed by both Non-IID data and gradient staleness based on the concept of knowledge rumination. FedHist enhances the stability of local gradients by performing weighted fusion with historical global gradients cached on the server. Relying on hindsight, it assigns aggregation weights to each participant in a multi-dimensional manner during each communication round. To further enhance the efficiency and stability of the training process, we introduce an intelligent $\ell_2$-norm amplification scheme, which dynamically regulates the learning progress based on the $\ell_2$-norms of the submitted gradients. Extensive experiments indicate FedHist outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of convergence performance and test accuracy.

Can news and social media attention reduce the influence of problematic research?

News and social media are widely used to disseminate science, but do they also help raise awareness of problems in research? This study investigates whether high levels of news and social media attention might accelerate the retraction process and increase the visibility of retracted articles. To explore this, we analyzed 15,642 news mentions, 6,588 blog mentions, and 404,082 X mentions related to 15,461 retracted articles. Articles receiving high levels of news and X mentions were retracted more quickly than non-mentioned articles in the same broad field and with comparable publication years, author impact, and journal impact. However, this effect was not statistically signicant for articles with high levels of blog mentions. Notably, articles frequently mentioned in the news experienced a significant increase in annual citation rates after their retraction, possibly because media exposure enhances the visibility of retracted articles, making them more likely to be cited. These findings suggest that increased public scrutiny can improve the efficiency of scientific self-correction, although mitigating the influence of retracted articles remains a gradual process.

Evaluating the quality of published medical research with ChatGPT

Estimating the quality of published research is important for evaluations of departments, researchers, and job candidates. Citation-based indicators sometimes support these tasks, but do not work for new articles and have low or moderate accuracy. Previous research has shown that ChatGPT can estimate the quality of research articles, with its scores correlating positively with an expert scores proxy in all fields, and often more strongly than citation-based indicators, except for clinical medicine. ChatGPT scores may therefore replace citation-based indicators for some applications. This article investigates the clinical medicine anomaly with the largest dataset yet and a more detailed analysis. The results showed that ChatGPT 4o-mini scores for articles submitted to the UK's Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 Unit of Assessment (UoA) 1 Clinical Medicine correlated positively (r=0.134, n=9872) with departmental mean REF scores, against a theoretical maximum correlation of r=0.226. ChatGPT 4o and 3.5 turbo also gave positive correlations. At the departmental level, mean ChatGPT scores correlated more strongly with departmental mean REF scores (r=0.395, n=31). For the 100 journals with the most articles in UoA 1, their mean ChatGPT score correlated strongly with their REF score (r=0.495) but negatively with their citation rate (r=-0.148). Journal and departmental anomalies in these results point to ChatGPT being ineffective at assessing the quality of research in prestigious medical journals or research directly affecting human health, or both. Nevertheless, the results give evidence of ChatGPT's ability to assess research quality overall for Clinical Medicine, where it might replace citation-based indicators for new research.

Is OpenAlex Suitable for Research Quality Evaluation and Which Citation Indicator is Best?

This article compares (1) citation analysis with OpenAlex and Scopus, testing their citation counts, document type/coverage and subject classifications and (2) three citation-based indicators: raw counts, (field and year) Normalised Citation Scores (NCS) and Normalised Log-transformed Citation Scores (NLCS). Methods (1&2): The indicators calculated from 28.6 million articles were compared through 8,704 correlations on two gold standards for 97,816 UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 articles. The primary gold standard is ChatGPT scores, and the secondary is the average REF2021 expert review score for the department submitting the article. Results: (1) OpenAlex provides better citation counts than Scopus and its inclusive document classification/scope does not seem to cause substantial field normalisation problems. The broadest OpenAlex classification scheme provides the best indicators. (2) Counterintuitively, raw citation counts are at least as good as nearly all field normalised indicators, and better for single years, and NCS is better than NLCS. (1&2) There are substantial field differences. Thus, (1) OpenAlex is suitable for citation analysis in most fields and (2) the major citation-based indicators seem to work counterintuitively compared to quality judgements. Field normalisation seems ineffective because more cited fields tend to produce higher quality work, affecting interdisciplinary research or within-field topic differences.

Towards the generation of hierarchical attack models from cybersecurity vulnerabilities using language models

This paper investigates the use of a pre-trained language model and siamese network to discern sibling relationships between text-based cybersecurity vulnerability data. The ultimate purpose of the approach presented in this paper is towards the construction of hierarchical attack models based on a set of text descriptions characterising potential/observed vulnerabilities in a given system. Due to the nature of the data, and the uncertainty sensitive environment in which the problem is presented, a practically oriented soft computing approach is necessary. Therefore, a key focus of this work is to investigate practical questions surrounding the reliability of predicted links towards the construction of such models, to which end conceptual and practical challenges and solutions associated with the proposed approach are outlined, such as dataset complexity and stability of predictions. Accordingly, the contributions of this paper focus on producing neural networks using a pre-trained language model for predicting sibling relationships between cybersecurity vulnerabilities, then outlining how to apply this capability towards the generation of hierarchical attack models. In addition, two data sampling mechanisms for tackling data complexity, and a consensus mechanism for reducing the amount of false positive predictions are outlined. Each of these approaches is compared and contrasted using empirical results from three sets of cybersecurity data to determine their effectiveness.

Adding Logical Operators to Tree Pattern Queries on Graph-Structured Data

As data are increasingly modeled as graphs for expressing complex relationships, the tree pattern query on graph-structured data becomes an important type of queries in real-world applications. Most practical query languages, such as XQuery and SPARQL, support logical expressions using logical-AND/OR/NOT operators to define structural constraints of tree patterns. In this paper, (1) we propose generalized tree pattern queries (GTPQs) over graph-structured data, which fully support propositional logic of structural constraints. (2) We make a thorough study of fundamental problems including satisfiability, containment and minimization, and analyze the computational complexity and the decision procedures of these problems. (3) We propose a compact graph representation of intermediate results and a pruning approach to reduce the size of intermediate results and the number of join operations -- two factors that often impair the efficiency of traditional algorithms for evaluating tree pattern queries. (4) We present an efficient algorithm for evaluating GTPQs using 3-hop as the underlying reachability index. (5) Experiments on both real-life and synthetic data sets demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our algorithm, from several times to orders of magnitude faster than state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of evaluation time, even for traditional tree pattern queries with only conjunctive operations.
