Reconstructive comb spectroscopy: A single-pixel detection paradigm beyond dual-comb limitations

Frequency comb spectroscopy has revolutionized broadband molecular fingerprinting with mode-defined resolution. While dual-comb spectroscopy stands as a dominant paradigm for high-resolution measurements, it relies on mutually coherent dual combs, and its applicability to non-cooperative sensing is limited by the requirement for phase-sensitive detection and controlled optical returns. Here, we introduce reconstructive comb spectroscopy, a fundamentally different paradigm that eliminates these constraints. By integrating a mode-programmable optical comb with a computational sensing scheme based on single-pixel detection, our method achieves picometer-level spectral resolution over a 10-nm (1.27-THz) instantaneous bandwidth, with single-photon sensitivity down to 10^-4 photons per pulse, and compressed spectral acquisition at 2.5% sampling while maintaining reconstruction errors below 10%. We demonstrate robust performance through scattering media and from non-cooperative targets. These capabilities establish reconstructive comb spectroscopy as a new platform for gas sensing, with broad applicability in remote atmospheric monitoring, industrial leak detection, and standoff chemical-threat identification.

Explosive Output to Enhance Jumping Ability: A Variable Reduction Ratio Design Paradigm for Humanoid Robots Knee Joint

Enhancing the explosive power output of the knee joints is critical for improving the agility and obstacle-crossing capabilities of humanoid robots. However, a mismatch between the knee-to-center-of-mass (CoM) transmission ratio and jumping demands, coupled with motor performance degradation at high speeds, restricts the duration of high-power output and limits jump performance. To address these problems, this paper introduces a novel knee joint design paradigm employing a dynamically decreasing reduction ratio for explosive output during jump. Analysis of motor output characteristics and knee kinematics during jumping inspired a coupling strategy in which the reduction ratio gradually decreases as the joint extends. A high initial ratio rapidly increases torque at jump initiation, while its gradual reduction minimizes motor speed increments and power losses, thereby maintaining sustained high-power output. A compact and efficient linear actuator-driven guide-rod mechanism realizes this coupling strategy, supported by parameter optimization guided by explosive jump control strategies. Experimental validation demonstrated a 63 cm vertical jump on a single-joint platform (a theoretical improvement of 28.1\% over the optimal fixed-ratio joints). Integrated into a humanoid robot, the proposed design enabled a 1.1 m long jump, a 0.5 m vertical jump, and a 0.5 m box jump.

Ultra-rapid broadband mid-infrared spectral tuning and sensing

Tunable mid-infrared lasers are essential for optical sensing and imaging. Existing technologies, however, face challenges in simultaneously achieving broadband spectral tunability and ultra-rapid scan rates, limiting their utility in dynamic scenarios such as real-time characterization of multiple molecular absorption bands. Here, we present a high-speed approach for broadband wavelength sweeping in the mid-infrared region, leveraging spectral focusing via difference frequency generation between a chirped fiber laser and an asynchronous, frequency-modulated electro-optic comb. This method enables pulse-to-pulse spectral tuning at a speed of 5.6 THz/us with 380 elements. Applied to spectroscopic sensing, our technique achieves broad spectral coverage (2600-3780 cm-1) with moderate spectral resolution (8 cm-1) and rapid acquisition times (6.3 us). Notably, the controllable electro-optic comb facilitates high scan rates of up to 2 Mscans/s across the full spectral range (corresponding to a speed of 60 THz/us), with trade-offs in number of elements (~30) and spectral point spacing or resolution (33 cm-1). Nevertheless, these capabilities make our platform highly promising for applications such as flow cytometry, chemical reaction monitoring, and mid-IR ranging and imaging.
