Semi-supervised Learning with Contrastive Predicative Coding

Semi-supervised learning (SSL) provides a powerful framework for leveraging unlabeled data when labels are limited or expensive to obtain. SSL algorithms based on deep neural networks have recently proven successful on standard benchmark tasks. However, many of them have thus far been either inflexible, inefficient or non-scalable. This paper explores recently developed contrastive predictive coding technique to improve discriminative power of deep learning models when a large portion of labels are absent. Two models, cpc-SSL and a class conditional variant~(ccpc-SSL) are presented. They effectively exploit the unlabeled data by extracting shared information between different parts of the (high-dimensional) data. The proposed approaches are inductive, and scale well to very large datasets like ImageNet, making them good candidates in real-world large scale applications.

RaFM: Rank-Aware Factorization Machines

Factorization machines (FM) are a popular model class to learn pairwise interactions by a low-rank approximation. Different from existing FM-based approaches which use a fixed rank for all features, this paper proposes a Rank-Aware FM (RaFM) model which adopts pairwise interactions from embeddings with different ranks. The proposed model achieves a better performance on real-world datasets where different features have significantly varying frequencies of occurrences. Moreover, we prove that the RaFM model can be stored, evaluated, and trained as efficiently as one single FM, and under some reasonable conditions it can be even significantly more efficient than FM. RaFM improves the performance of FMs in both regression tasks and classification tasks while incurring less computational burden, therefore also has attractive potential in industrial applications.

Palladium Diselenide Long-Wavelength Infrared Photodetector with High Sensitivity and Stability

A long-wavelength infrared (IR) photodetector based on two-dimensional materials working at room temperature would have wide applications in many aspects in remote sensing, thermal imaging, biomedical optics, and medical imaging. However, sub-bandgap light detection in graphene and black phosphorus has been a long-standing scientific challenge because of low photoresponsivity, instability in the air and highdark current. In this study, we report a highly sensitive, air-stable and operable long-wavelength infrared photodetector at room temperature based on PdSe2 phototransistors and its heterostructure. A high photoresponsivity of ~42.1 AW-1 (at 10.6 μm) was demonstrated, which is an order of magnitude higher than the current record of platinum diselenide. Moreover, the dark current and noise power density were suppressed effectively by fabricating a van der Waals heterostructure. This work fundamentally contributes to establishing long-wavelength infrared detection by PdSe2 at the forefront of long-IR two-dimensional-materials-based photonics.

Optimal Control of DERs in ADN under Spatial and Temporal Correlated Uncertainties

The control schemes of distributed energy resources (DERs) in active distribution networks (ADNs) are largely influenced by uncertainties. The uncertainties of DERs are complicated, containing spatial and temporal correlation, which makes it challenging to design proper control schemes, especially when there exist temporal-correlated units such as energy units (EUs). This paper provides an Ito process model to describe the characteristics of stochastic resources and EUs in a unified way, which makes it easy to evaluate the impacts of stochastic resources on temporal-correlated units. Based the moment form of the Ito process model, a moment optimization (MO) approach is provided to transform the stochastic control (SC) problem into an optimization problem with respect to the first-order and second-order moments of the system variables. The scale of MO is comparable to that of the corresponding deterministic control problem, which means that the computational efficiency of MO is much smaller than that of traditional approaches. Case studies also show that the proposed approach outperforms existing approaches in both the performance and computational efficiency, which means that the proposed approach has attractive potential for use in large-scale applications.

Optimal Control of AGC Systems Considering Non-Gaussian Wind Power Uncertainty

Wind power uncertainty poses significant challenges for automatic generation control (AGC) systems. It can enhance control performances to explicitly consider wind power uncertainty distributions within controller design. However, widely accepted wind uncertainties usually follow non-Gaussian distributions which may lead to complicated stochastic AGC modeling and high computational burdens. To overcome the issue, this paper presents a novel Ito-theory-based model for the stochastic control problem (SCP) of AGC systems, which reduces the computational burden of optimization considering non-Gaussian wind power uncertainty to the same scale as that for deterministic control problems. We present an Ito process model to exactly describe non-Gaussian wind power uncertainty, and then propose an SCP based on the concept of stochastic assessment functions (SAFs). Based on a convergent series expansion of the SAF, the SCP is reformulated as a certain deterministic control problem without sacrificing performance under non-Gaussian wind power uncertainty. The reformulated control problem is proven as a convex optimization which can be solved efficiently. A case study demonstrates the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed approach compared with several conventional approaches.

Room-temperature high detectivity mid-infrared photodetectors based on black arsenic phosphorus

The mid-infrared (MIR) spectral range, pertaining to important applications such as molecular 'fingerprint' imaging, remote sensing, free space telecommunication and optical radar, is of particular scientific interest and technological importance. However, state-of-the-art materials for MIR detection are limited by intrinsic noise and inconvenient fabrication processes, resulting in high cost photodetectors requiring cryogenic operation. We report black arsenic-phosphorus-based long wavelength infrared photodetectors with room temperature operation up to 8.2 um, entering the second MIR atmospheric transmission window. Combined with a van der Waals heterojunction, room temperature specific detectivity higher than 4.9*10^9 Jones was obtained in the 3-5 um range. The photodetector works in a zero-bias photovoltaic mode, enabling fast photoresponse and low dark noise. Our van der Waals heterojunction photodector not only exemplify black arsenic-phosphorus as a promising candidate for MIR opto-electronic applications, but also pave the way for a general strategy to suppress 1/f noise in photonic devices.

Broadband Circular Polarizers Constructed by Helix-like Chiral Metamaterials

In this paper, a kind of helix-like chiral metamaterial, which can be realized with multiple conventional lithography or electron beam lithographic techniques, is proposed to achieve broadband bianisotropic optical response analogous to helical metamaterial. On the basis of twisted metamaterial, via tailoring the relative orientation within the lattice, the anisotropy of arc is converted into magneto-electric coupling of closely spaced arc pairs, which leads to a broad bianisotropic optical response. By connecting the adjacent upper and lower arcs, the coupling of metasurface pairs is transformed to the coupling of the three-dimensional inclusions, and provides a much broader and higher bianisotropic optical response. For only a four-layer helix-like metamaterial, the maximum extinction ratio can reach 19.7. The operation band is in the wavelength range from 4.69 μm to 8.98 μm with an average extinction ratio of 6.9. And the transmittance for selective polarization is above 0.8 in the entire operation band. Such a structure is promising for integratable and scalable broadband circular polarizers, especially has great potential to act as broadband circular micropolarizers in the field of the full-stokes division of focal plane polarimeters.

Ultrasensitive and broadband MoS2 photodetector driven by ferroelectrics

Photodetectors based on two dimensional materials have attracted growing interest. However, the sensitivity is still unsatisfactory even under high gate voltage. Here we demonstrate a MoS2 photodetector with a poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) ferroelectric layer in place of the oxide layer in a traditional field effect transistor. The dark current of the photodetector is strongly suppressed by ferroelectric polarization. A high detectivity 2.21012 Jones) and photoresponsitivity (2570 A W) detector has been achieved under ZERO gate bias at a wavelength of 635 nm. Most strikingly, the band gap of few-layer MoS2 can be tuned by the ultra-high electrostatic field from the ferroelectric polarization. With this characteristic, photoresponse wavelengths of the photodetector are extended into the near infrared (0.85-1.55m). A ferroelectrics optoelectronics hybrid structure is an effective way to achieve high performance 2D electronic optoelectronic devices.

Silane-Catalyzed Fast Growth of Large Single-Crystalline Graphene on Hexagonal Boron Nitride

The direct growth of high-quality, large single-crystalline domains of graphene on a dielectric substrate is of vital importance for applications in electronics and optoelectronics. Traditionally, graphene domains grown on dielectrics are typically only ~1 nm with a growth rate of ~1 nm/min or less, the main reason is the lack of a catalyst. Here we show that silane, serving as a gaseous catalyst, is able to boost the graphene growth rate to ~1 um/min, thereby promoting graphene domains up to 20 um in size to be synthesized via chemical vapor deposition on hexagonal boron nitride. Hall measurements show that the mobility of the sample reaches 20,000 cm2/Vs at room temperature, which is among the best for CVD-grown graphene. Combining the advantages of both catalytic CVD and the ultra-flat dielectric substrate, gaseous catalyst-assisted CVD paves the way for synthesizing high-quality graphene for device applications while avoiding the transfer process.

Exchange-dominated Standing Spin Wave Excitations under microwave irradiation in Ni80Fe20 Thin Films

We investigated the microwave-assisted DC voltages of ferromagnetic resonances and exchangedominated standing spin wave excitations in two different in-plane magnetized permalloy thin films via homodyne detection. The line shapes of ferromagnetic resonance spectra and the dispersion curves of ferromagnetic resonance and standing spin wave are in agreement of previous studies, while further investigations of DC voltage spectra for these two excitations reveal that 1. unlike ferromagnetic resonance signals, the anti-symmetrical line shapes of standing spin wave excitations are not depend on the electromagnetic relative phase of assisted microwave, and 2. linewidths of their DC voltage spectra are distinct. The complicated spin dynamics of standing spin wave is consequently discussed by applying Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in term of exchange interaction.

Magnetization Characteristic of Ferromagnetic Thin Strip by Measuring Anisotropic Magnetoresistance and Ferromagnetic Resonance

The magnetization characteristic in a permalloy thin strip is investigated by electrically measuring the anisotropic magnetoresistance and ferromagnetic resonance in in-plane and out-of-plane configurations. Our results indicate that the magnetization vector can rotate in the film plane as well as out of the film plane by changing the intensity of external magnetic field of certain direction. The magnetization characteristic can be explained by considering demagnetization and magnetic anisotropy. Our method can be used to obtain the demagnetization factor, saturated magnetic moment and the magnetic anisotropy.

Half-Semiconductor antiferromagnets and Spin-Gapless-Semiconductor antiferromagnets

We propose a concept of half-semiconductor antiferromagnets in which both spin-polarized valence and conduction bands belong to the same spin channel with completely compensated spontaneous magnetization. Using density functional theory plus Hubbard U (DFT+U) methods, we find a viable approach to achieve the half-semiconductor antiferromagnets through the transition metal (TM) Fe and Cr codoped boron nitride(BN) sheet. Moreover, spin gapless semiconductor antiferromagnets with zero magnetic moment are also achieved in such systems.

Surface polaritons in two-dimensional left-handed photonic crystals

Using an extended plane-wave-based transfer-matrix method, the photonic band structures and the corresponding transmission spectrum of a two-dimensional left-handed photonic crystal are calculated. Comparisons between the periodic structure with a single left-handed cylindric rod are made, and many interesting similarities are found. It is shown that, due to the localized surface polaritons presented by an isolated left-handed rod, there exist many exciting physical phenomena in high-dimensional left-handed photonic crystals. As direct results of coupling of the localized surface polaritons of neighboring left-handed rod, a lot of almost dispersionless bands, anti-crossing behavior, and a zero $\bar{n}$ gap are exhibited in the left-handed periodic structure. Moreover, in a certain frequency region, except distorted by a lot of anti-crossing behavior, there exists a continual dispersion relation, which can be explained by the long-wavelength approximation. It is also pointed out that high-dimensional left-handed photonic crystals can be used to design narrow-band filter.

Nonmagnetic invisibility cloak with minimized scattering cross section

We propose one kind of transformation functions for nonmagnetic invisibility cloak with minimized scattering on the basis of generalized transformation. By matching the impedance at the outer surface of the cloak, the transformations with two parameters are determined. To confirm the performance of the cloak, full wave simulation based on the finite element method is carried out. Furthermore, total scattering cross section is computed to better illustrate the scattering characteristics of cloak with different parameters. In addition, based on the effective media theory, alternating layered system composed of two isotropic materials is employed to realize the cloak practically.

Different mechanisms for efficient optical transmission through bilayered subwavelength patterned metal films

Light transmission through bilayered thin metal films perforated with subwavelength hole arrays are numerically studied based on a full-vector finite-difference time-domain approach. A variety of transmission peaks originating from different physical mechanisms are observed. In addition to the direct tunnelling and Fabry-Pèrot resonances, generally possessed by idealized bilayered dielectric slabs, the near-field localized plasmon polaritons also play important roles. They not only influence the direct tunnelling in a destructive or constructive way, the interactions between these localized plasmon polaritons on different metal films also result in additional channels which transfer optical energy effectively.

Carrier Dynamics in Submonolayer InGaAs/GaAs Quantum Dots

Carrier dynamics of submonolayer (SML) InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) were studied by micro-photoluminecence (MPL), selectively excited photoluminescence (SEPL), and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL). MPL and SEPL show the coexistence of localized and delocalized states, and different local phonon modes. TRPL reveal shorter recombination lifetimes and longer capture times for the QDs with higher emission energy. This suggests that the smallest SML QDs are formed by perfectly vertically correlated 2D InAs islands, having the highest In content and the lowest emission energy, while a slight deviation from the perfectly vertical correlation produces larger QDs with lower In content and higher emission energy.

Electronic and magnetic properties of multishell Co nanowires coated with Cu

The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of ultrathin Cu-coated Co nanowires have been studied by using empirical genetic algorithm simulations and a tight-binding $spd$ model Hamiltonian in the unrestricted Hartree-Hock approximation. For some specific stoichiometric compositions, Cu atoms occupy the surface, while Co atoms prefer to stay in the interior, forming the perfect coated multishell structures. The outer Cu layers lead to substantial variations of the magnetic moment of interior Co atoms, depending on the structure and thickness of Cu layers. In particular, single Co atom row in the center of nanowire is found to be nonmagnetic when coated with two Cu layers. All the other Co nanowires in the coated Cu shell are still magnetic but the magnetic moments are reduced as compared with Co nanowires without Cu coating. The interaction between Cu and Co atoms induces nonzero magnetic moment for Cu atoms.

Does the melting behavior in ultrathin metallic nanowires begin from the surface ?

Surface melting temperature is well-known significantly lower than the bulk melting point. But we find that the interior melting temperature in ultrathin nanowires is lower than that of the surface melting . The thermal stability of helical multi-walled cylindrical gold nanowires is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The melting temperature of gold nanowires is lower than the bulk value, but higher than that of gold nanoclusters. An interesting interior melting is revealed in the gold nanowires and the thermodynamics is closely related to interior structures. The melting starts from the interior atoms, while the surface melting occurs at relatively higher temperature. We propose that the surface melting represents the overall melting in ultrathin metallic nanowires.
