Helicity reversion in high harmonic generation driven by bichromatic counterrotating circularly polarized laser fields

We investigate the polarization properties of high harmonics generated with the bichromatic counterrotating circularly polarized (BCCP) laser fields by numerically solving time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). It is found that, the helicity of the elliptically polarized harmonic emission is reversed at particular harmonic orders. Based on the time-frequency analysis and the classical three-step model, the correspondence between the positions of helicity reversions and the classical trajectories of continuum electrons is established. It is shown that, the electrons ionized at one lobe of laser field can be divided into different groups based on the different lobes they recombine at, and the harmonics generated by adjacent groups have opposite helicities. Our study performs a detailed analysis of high harmonics in terms of electron trajectories and depicts a clear and intuitive physical picture of the HHG process in BCCP laser field.

Quenching effect in below-threshold high harmonic generation

We theoretically demonstrate the quenching effect in below-threshold high harmonic generation (HHG) by using the time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) and solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). It is shown that the HHG is substantially suppressed in particular harmonic orders in the below-threshold region when multi-electron interaction comes into play. The position of the suppression is determined by the energy gap between the highest occupied orbital and the higher-lying orbital of the target. We show that the quenching effect is due to a new class of multi-electron dynamics involving electron-electron energy transfer, which is analog to the fluorescence quenching owing to the energy transfer between molecules in fluorescent material. This work reveals the important role of the multi-electron interaction on HHG especially in the below-threshold region.

The selection rules of high harmonic generation: the symmetries of molecules and laser fields

The selection rules of high harmonic generation (HHG) are investigated using three-dimensional time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). From the harmonic spectra obtained with various real molecules and different forms of laser fields, several factors that contribute to selection rules are revealed. Extending the targets to stereoscopic molecules, it is shown that the allowed harmonics are dependent on the symmetries of the projections of molecules. For laser fields, the symmetries contributing to the selection rules are discussed according to Lissajous figures and their dynamical directivities. All the phenomena are explained by the symmetry of the full time-dependent Hamiltonian under a combined transformation. We present a systematic study on the selection rules and propose an intuitive method for the judgment of allowed harmonic orders, which can be extended to more complex molecules and various forms of laser pulses.

Frequency shift in high order harmonic generation from isotopic molecules

We report the first experimental observation of frequency shift in high order harmonic generation (HHG) from isotopic molecules H2 and D2 . It is found that harmonics generated from the isotopic molecules exhibit obvious spectral red shift with respect to those from Ar atom. The red shift is further demonstrated to arise from the laser-driven nuclear motion in isotopic molecules. By utilizing the red shift observed in experiment, we successfully retrieve the nuclear vibrations in H2 and D2, which agree well with the theoretical calculations from the time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE) with Non-Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Moreover, we demonstrate that the frequency shift can be manipulated by changing the laser chirp.

Molecular orbital tomography beyond the plane wave approximation

The use of plane wave approximation in molecular orbital tomography via high-order harmonic generation has been questioned since it was proposed, owing to the fact that it ignores the essential property of the continuum wave function. To address this problem, we develop a theory to retrieve the valence molecular orbital directly utilizing molecular continuum wave function which takes into account the influence of the parent ion field on the continuum electrons. By transforming this wave function into momentum space, we show that the mapping from the relevant molecular orbital to the high-order harmonic spectra is still invertible. As an example, the highest orbital of $\mathrm{N_2}$ is successfully reconstructed and it shows good agreement with the \emph{ab initio} orbital. Our work clarifies the long-standing controversy and strengthens the theoretical basis of molecular orbital tomography.

Probing rotational wave-packet dynamics with the structural minimum in high-order harmonic spectra

We investigate the alignment-dependent high-order harmonic spectrum generated from nonadiabatically aligned molecules around the first half rotational revival. It is found that the evolution of the molecular alignment is encoded in the structural minima. To reveal the relation between the molecular alignment and the structural minimum in the high-order harmonic spectrum, we perform an analysis based on the two-center interference model. Our analysis shows that the structural minimum position depends linearly on the inverse of the alignment parameter $<\cos^2θ>$. This linear relation indicates the possibility of probing the rotational wave-packet dynamics by measuring the spectral minima.

Interference of high-order harmonics generated from molecules at different alignment angles

We theoretically investigate the interference effect of high-order harmonics generated from molecules at different alignment angles. It is shown that the interference of the harmonic emissions from molecules aligned at different angles can significantly modulate the spectra and result in the anomalous harmonic cutoffs observed in a recent experiment [ Nature Phys. 7, 822 (2011) ]. The shift of the spectral minimum position with decreasing the degree of alignment is also explained by the interference effect of the harmonic emissions.

Imprints of the molecular-orbital geometry on the high-harmonic ellipticity

The influence of the orbital symmetry on the ellipticity of the high-order harmonics is investigated. It is found that the ellipticity maps have distinct shapes for the molecular orbital with different symmetry. Our analysis shows that the feature of the harmonic ellipticity map is essentially determined by the nodal structure of the nonsymmetric orbital. The results indicate that the molecular-orbital geometry is imprinted on the ellipticity of the high-order harmonics, which invites the use of ellipticity measurements as a probe of the orbital structure for polar molecules.

Tomographic imaging of asymmetric molecular orbitals with a two-color multicycle laser field

We theoretically demonstrate a scheme for tomographic reconstruction of asymmetric molecular orbitals based on high-order harmonic generation with a two-color multicycle laser field. It is shown that by adjusting the relative phase of the two fields, the returning electrons can be forced to recollide from one direction for all the orientations of molecules. Thus the reconstruction of the asymmetric orbitals can be carried out with multicycle laser field. This releases the stringent requirement of a single-cycle pulse with a stabilized and controllable carrier-envelop phase for the tomographic imaging of asymmetric molecular orbitals.

Tomographic reconstruction of molecular orbitals with twofold mirror antisymmetry: overcoming the nodal plane problem

We propose a new method to overcome the nodal plane problem for the tomographic reconstruction of molecular orbitals with twofold mirror antisymmetry in the length form based on high-order harmonic generation. It is shown that, by carrying out the reconstruction procedure in the rotating laboratory frame using the component of the dipole moment parallel to the electron recollision direction, the nodal plane problem is avoided and the target orbital is successfully reconstructed. Moreover, it is found that, the proposed method can completely avoid the additional artificial lobes found in the results from the traditional method in the velocity form and therefore provides a more reliable reproduction of the target orbital.

Influence of large permanent dipoles on molecular orbital tomography

The influence of large permanent dipoles on molecular orbital tomography via high-order harmonic generation (HHG) is investigated in this work. It is found that, owing to the modification of the angle-dependent ionization rate resulting from the Stark shift, the one-side-recollision condition for the tomographic imaging can not be satisfied even with the few-cycle driving pulses. To overcome this problem, we employ a tailored driving pulse by adding a weak low-frequency pulse to the few-cycle laser pulse to control the HHG process and the recollision of the continuum electrons are effectively restricted to only one side of the core. Then we carried out the orbital reconstruction in both the length and velocity forms. The results show that, the orbital structure can only be successfully reproduced by using the dipole matrix elements projected perpendicular to the permanent dipole in both forms.

Role of the Coulomb potential on the ellipticity in atomic high-order harmonics generation

The role of the Coulomb potential on the generation of elliptically polarized high-order harmonics from atoms driven by elliptically polarized laser is investigated analytically. It is found that the Coulomb effect makes a contribution to the harmonic ellipticity for low harmonic orders and short quantum path. By using the strong-field eikonal-Volkov approximation, we analyze the influence of the Coulomb potential on the dynamics of the continuum state and find that the obtained harmonic ellipticity in our simulation originates from the break of symmetry of the continuum state.

Broadband large-ellipticity harmonic generation with polar molecule

We investigate the polarization properties of high harmonic generation from polar molecules with a linearly polarized field. It is found that elliptically polarized harmonics are observed in a wide spectral range from the plateau to the cutoff. Further analyses show that the nonsymmetric structure of the highest occupied molecular orbital is the origin of ellipticity of the harmonics. The results provide a method for generation of large-ellipticity XUV pulses, which will benefit the application of HHG as a tool of detection in materials and biology science.

Laser-polarization-dependent photoelectron angular distributions from polar molecules

Photoelectron angular distributions (PADs) of oriented polar molecules in response to different polarized lasers are systematically investigated. It is found that the PADs of polar CO molecules show three distinct styles excited by linearly, elliptically and circularly polarized lasers respectively. In the case of elliptical polarization, a deep suppression is observed along the major axis and the distribution concentrates approximately along the minor axis. Additionally, it is also found that the concentrated distributions rotate clockwise as the ellipticity increases. Our investigation presents a method to manipulate the motion and angular distribution of photoelectrons by varying the polarization of the exciting pulses, and also implies the possibility to control the processes in laser-molecule interactions in future work.
