DeText: A Deep Text Ranking Framework with BERT

Ranking is the most important component in a search system. Mostsearch systems deal with large amounts of natural language data, hence an effective ranking system requires a deep understandingof text semantics. Recently, deep learning based natural languageprocessing (deep NLP) models have generated promising results onranking systems. BERT is one of the most successful models thatlearn contextual embedding, which has been applied to capturecomplex query-document relations for search ranking. However, this is generally done by exhaustively interacting each query wordwith each document word, which is inefficient for online servingin search product systems. In this paper, we investigate how tobuild an efficient BERT-based ranking model for industry use cases. The solution is further extended to a general ranking framework,DeText, that is open sourced and can be applied to various rankingproductions. Offline and online experiments of DeText on threereal-world search systems present significant improvement overstate-of-the-art approaches.

Anapole mediated giant photothermal nonlinearity in nanostructured silicon

Featured with a plethora of electric and magnetic Mie resonances, high index dielectric nanostructures offer a versatile platform to concentrate light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. By integrating unique features of far-field scattering control and near-field concentration from radiationless anapole states, here, we demonstrate a giant photothermal nonlinearity in single subwavelength-sized silicon nanodisks. The nanoscale energy concentration and consequent near-field enhancements mediated by the anapole mode yield a reversible nonlinear scattering with a large modulation depth and a broad dynamic range, unveiling a record-high nonlinear index change up to 0.5 at mild incident light intensities on the order of MW/cm2. The observed photothermal nonlinearity showcases three orders of magnitude enhancement compared with that of unstructured bulk silicon, as well as nearly one order of magnitude higher than that through the radiative electric dipolar mode. Such nonlinear scattering can empower distinctive point spread functions in confocal reflectance imaging, offering the potential for far-field localization of nanostructured Si with an accuracy approaching 40 nm. Our findings shed new light on active silicon photonics based on optical anapoles.

Mapping the Galactic disk with the LAMOST and Gaia Red clump sample: I: precise distances, masses, ages and 3D velocities of $\sim$ 140000 red clump stars

We present a sample of $\sim$ 140,000 primary red clump (RC) stars of spectral signal-to-noise ratios higher than 20 from the LAMOST Galactic spectroscopic surveys, selected based on their positions in the metallicity-dependent effective temperature--surface gravity and color--metallicity diagrams, supervised by high-quality $Kepler$ asteroseismology data. The stellar masses and ages of those stars are further determined from the LAMOST spectra, using the Kernel Principal Component Analysis method, trained with thousands of RCs in the LAMOST-$Kepler$ fields with accurate asteroseismic mass measurements. The purity and completeness of our primary RC sample are generally higher than 80 per cent. For the mass and age, a variety of tests show typical uncertainties of 15 and 30 per cent, respectively. Using over ten thousand primary RCs with accurate distance measurements from the parallaxes of Gaia DR2, we re-calibrate the $K_{\rm s}$ absolute magnitudes of primary RCs by, for the first time, considering both the metallicity and age dependencies. With the the new calibration, distances are derived for all the primary RCs, with a typical uncertainty of 5--10 per cent, even better than the values yielded by the Gaia parallax measurements for stars beyond 3--4 kpc. The sample covers a significant volume of the Galactic disk of $4 \leq R \leq 16$ kpc, $|Z| \leq 5$ kpc, and $-20 \leq ϕ\leq 50^{\circ}$. Stellar atmospheric parameters, line-of-sight velocities and elemental abundances derived from the LAMOST spectra and proper motions of Gaia DR2 are also provided for the sample stars. Finally, the selection function of the sample is carefully evaluated in the color-magnitude plane for different sky areas. The sample is publicly available.

A Catalog of RV Variable Star Candidates from LAMOST

RV variable stars are important in astrophysics. The Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) spectroscopic survey has provided ~ 6.5 million stellar spectra in its Data Release 4 (DR4). During the survey, ~ 4.7 million unique sources were targeted and ~ 1 million stars observed repeatedly. The probabilities of stars being RV variables are estimated by comparing the observed radial velocity variations with the simulated ones. We build a catalog of 80,702 RV variable candidates with probability greater than 0.60 by analyzing the duplicate-observed multi-epoch sources covered by the LAMOST DR4. Simulations and cross-identifications show that the purity of the catalog is higher than 80%. The catalog consists of 77% binary systems and 7% pulsating stars as well as 16% pollution by single stars. 3,138 RV variables are classified through cross-identifications with published results in literatures. By using the 3,138 sources common to both LAMOST and a collection of published RV variable catalogs we are able to analyze LAMOST's RV variable detection rate. The efficiency of the method adopted in this work relies not only on the sampling frequency of observations but also periods and amplitudes of RV variables. With the progress of LAMOST, Gaia and other surveys, more and more RV variables would will be confirmed and classified. This catalog is valuable for other large-scale surveys, especially for RV variable searches. The catalog will be released according to the LAMOST Data Policy via http://dr4.lamost.org.

Gate-tunable van der Waals heterostructure for reconfigurable neural network vision sensor

Early processing of visual information takes place in the human retina. Mimicking neurobiological structures and functionalities of the retina provide a promising pathway to achieving vision sensor with highly efficient image processing. Here, we demonstrate a prototype vision sensor that operates via the gate-tunable positive and negative photoresponses of the van der Waals (vdW) vertical heterostructures. The sensor emulates not only the neurobiological functionalities of bipolar cells and photoreceptors but also the unique synaptic connectivity between bipolar cells and photoreceptors. By tuning gate voltage for each pixel, we achieve reconfigurable vision sensor for simultaneously image sensing and processing. Furthermore, our prototype vision sensor itself can be trained to classify the input images, via updating the gate voltages applied individually to each pixel in the sensor. Our work indicates that vdW vertical heterostructures offer a promising platform for the development of neural network vision sensor.

Optimal order of uniform convergence for finite element method on Bakhvalov-type meshes

We propose a new analysis of convergence for a $k$th order ($k\ge 1$) finite element method, which is applied on Bakhvalov-type meshes to a singularly perturbed two-point boundary value problem. A novel interpolant is introduced, which has a simple structure and is easy to generalize. By means of this interpolant, we prove an optimal order of uniform convergence with respect to the perturbation parameter. Numerical experiments illustrate these theoretical results.

Edge-Epitaxial Growth of InSe Nanowires toward High-Performance Photodetectors

Semiconducting nanowires offer many opportunities for electronic and optoelectronic device applications due to their special geometries and unique physical properties. However, it has been challenging to synthesize semiconducting nanowires directly on SiO2/Si substrate due to lattice mismatch. Here, we developed a catalysis-free approach to achieve direct synthesis of long and straight InSe nanowires on SiO2/Si substrate through edge-homoepitaxial growth. We further achieved parallel InSe nanowires on SiO2/Si substrate through controlling growth conditions. We attributed the underlying growth mechanism to selenium self-driven vapor-liquid-solid process, which is distinct from conventional metal-catalytic vapor-liquid-solid method widely used for growing Si and III-V nanowires. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the as-grown InSe nanowire-based visible light photodetector simultaneously possesses an extraordinary photoresponsivity of 271 A/W, ultrahigh detectivity of 1.57*10^14 Jones and a fast response speed of microsecond scale. The excellent performance of the photodetector indicates that as-grown InSe nanowires are promising in future optoelectronic applications. More importantly, the proposed edge-homoepitaxial approach may open up a novel avenue for direct synthesis of semiconducting nanowire arrays on SiO2/Si substrate.

A New Luminous blue variable in the outskirt of the Andromeda Galaxy

The hot massive luminous blue variables (LBVs) represent an important evolutionary phase of massive stars. Here, we report the discovery of a new LBV -- LAMOST J0037+4016 in the distant outskirt of the Andromeda galaxy. It is located in the south-western corner (a possible faint spiral arm) of M31 with an unexpectedly large projection distance of $\sim$ 22 kpc from the center. The optical light curve shows a 1.2 mag variation in $V$ band and its outburst and quiescence phases both last over several years. The observed spectra indicate an A-type supergiant at epoch close to the outburst phase and a hot B-type supergiant with weak [Fe II] emission lines at epoch of much dimmer brightness. The near-infrared color-color diagram further shows it follows the distribution of Galactic and M31 LBVs rather than B[e] supergiants. All the existing data strongly show that LAMOST J0037+4016 is an LBV. By spectral energy distribution fitting, we find it has a luminosity ($4.42 \pm 1.64$)$\times 10^5$ $L_{\odot}$ and an initial mass $\sim 30$ $M_{\odot}$, indicating its nature of less luminosity class of LBV.

Wide-field 3D nanoscopy on chip through large and tunable spatial-frequency-shift effect

Linear super-resolution microscopy via synthesis aperture approach permits fast acquisition because of its wide-field implementations, however, it has been limited in resolution because a missing spatial-frequency band occurs when trying to use a shift magnitude surpassing the cutoff frequency of the detection system beyond a factor of two, which causes ghosting to appear. Here, we propose a method of chip-based 3D nanoscopy through large and tunable spatial-frequency-shift effect, capable of covering full extent of the spatial-frequency component within a wide passband. The missing of spatial-frequency can be effectively solved by developing a spatial-frequency-shift actively tuning approach through wave vector manipulation and operation of optical modes propagating along multiple azimuthal directions on a waveguide chip to interfere. In addition, the method includes a chip-based sectioning capability, which is enabled by saturated absorption of fluorophores. By introducing ultra-large propagation effective refractive index, nanoscale resolution is possible, without sacrificing the temporal resolution and the field-of-view. Imaging on GaP waveguide material demonstrates a lateral resolution of lamda/10, which is 5.4 folds above Abbe diffraction limit, and an axial resolution of lamda/19 using 0.9 NA detection objective. Simulation with an assumed propagation effective refractive index of 10 demonstrates a lateral resolution of lamda/22, in which the huge gap between the directly shifted and the zero-order components is completely filled to ensure the deep-subwavelength resolvability. It means that, a fast wide-field 3D deep-subdiffraction visualization could be realized using a standard microscope by adding a mass-producible and cost-effective spatial-frequency-shift illumination chip.

Direct evidence for charge compensation induced large magnetoresistance in thin WTe2

Since the discovery of extremely large non-saturating magnetoresistance (MR) in WTe2, much effort has been devoted to understanding the underlying mechanism, which is still under debate. Here, we explicitly identify the dominant physical origin of the large non-saturating MR through in-situ tuning of the magneto-transport properties in thin WTe2 film. With an electrostatic doping approach, we observed a non-monotonic gate dependence of the MR. The MR reaches a maximum (10600%) in thin WTe2 film at certain gate voltage where electron and hole concentrations are balanced, indicating that the charge compensation is the dominant mechanism of the observed large MR. Besides, we show that the temperature dependent magnetoresistance exhibits similar tendency with the carrier mobility when the charge compensation is retained, revealing that distinct scattering mechanisms may be at play for the temperature dependence of magneto-transport properties. Our work would be helpful for understanding mechanism of the large MR in other nonmagnetic materials and offers an avenue for achieving large MR in the non-magnetic materials with electron-hole pockets.

Member stars of the GD1 tidal stream from the SDSS, LAMOST and Gaia surveys

With the photometric data from the SDSS survey, the spectroscopic data from the SDSS/SEGUE and the LAMOST surveys, and the astrometric data from the Gaia DR2, we have identified 71 highly-probable member stars of the GD-1 cold stellar stream spread along almost its entire length (i.e. from 126 to 203 degree in Right Ascension). With the accurate spectroscopic (i.e. metallicity and line-of-sight velocity) and astrometric (i.e. proper motions) information, the position-velocity diagrams, i.e. $ϕ_{1}$-$μ_α$, $ϕ_{1}$-$μ_δ$ and $ϕ_{1}$-${v_{\rm gsr}}$, of the GD-1 stream are well mapped. The stream has an average metallicity [Fe/H] $= -1.95 \pm 0.23$. The rich information of member stars of the stream now available allow one not only to model its origin, but also to place strong constraints on the mass distribution and the gravitational potential of the Milky Way.

Pressure-Tunable Ambipolar Conduction and Hysteresis in Ultrathin Palladium Diselenide Field Effect Transistors

A few-layer palladium diselenide (PdSe2) field effect transistor is studied under external stimuli such as electrical and optical fields, electron irradiation and gas pressure. We observe ambipolar conduction and hysteresis in the transfer curves of the PdSe2 material unprotected and as-exfoliated. We tune the ambipolar conduction and its hysteretic behavior in the air and pure nitrogen environments. The prevailing p-type transport observed at room pressure is reversibly turned into dominant n-type conduction by reducing the pressure, which can simultaneously suppress the hysteresis. The pressure control can be exploited to symmetrize and stabilize the transfer characteristic of the device as required in high-performance logic circuits. The transistor is immune from short channel effects but is affected by trap states with characteristic times in the order of minutes. The channel conductance, dramatically reduced by the electron irradiation during scanning electron microscope imaging, is restored after several minutes anneal at room temperature. The work paves the way toward the exploitation of PdSe2 in electronic devices by providing an experiment-based and deeper understanding of charge transport in PdSe2 transistors subjected to electrical stress and other external agents.

Ages and Masses of 0.64 million Red Giant Branch stars from the LAMOST Galactic Spectroscopic Survey

We present a catalog of stellar age and mass estimates for a sample of 640\,986 red giant branch (RGB) stars of the Galactic disk from the LAMOST Galactic Spectroscopic Survey (DR4). The RGB stars are distinguished from the red clump stars utilizing period spacing derived from the spectra with a machine learning method based on kernel principal component analysis (KPCA). Cross-validation suggests our method is capable of distinguishing RC from RGB stars with only 2 per cent contamination rate for stars with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) higher than 50. The age and mass of these RGB stars are determined from their LAMOST spectra with KPCA method by taking the LAMOST - $Kepler$ giant stars having asteroseismic parameters and the LAMOST-TGAS sub-giant stars based on isochrones as training sets. Examinations suggest that the age and mass estimates of our RGB sample stars with SNR $>$ 30 have a median error of 30 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively. Stellar ages are found to exhibit positive vertical and negative radial gradients across the disk, and the age structure of the disk is strongly flared across the whole disk of $6<R<13$\,kpc. The data set demonstrates good correlations among stellar age, [Fe/H] and [$α$/Fe]. There are two separate sequences in the [Fe/H] -- [$α$/Fe] plane: a high--$α$ sequence with stars older than $\sim$\,8\,Gyr and a low--$α$ sequence composed of stars with ages covering the whole range of possible ages of stars. We also examine relations between age and kinematic parameters derived from the Gaia DR2 parallax and proper motions. Both the median value and dispersion of the orbital eccentricity are found to increase with age. The vertical angular momentum is found to fairly smoothly decrease with age from 2 to 12\,Gyr, with a rate of about $-$50\,kpc\,km\,s$^{-1}$\,Gyr$^{-1}$. A full table of the catalog is public available online.

Experimental identification of critical condition for drastically enhancing thermoelectric power factor of two-dimensional layered materials

Nano-structuring is an extremely promising path to high performance thermoelectrics. Favorable improvements in thermal conductivity are attainable in many material systems, and theoretical work points to large improvements in electronic properties. However, realization of the electronic benefits in practical materials has been elusive experimentally. A key challenge is that experimental identification of the quantum confinement length, below which the thermoelectric power factor is significantly enhanced, remains elusive due to lack of simultaneous control of size and carrier density. Here we investigate gate tunable and temperature-dependent thermoelectric transport in $γ$ phase indium selenide ($γ$ InSe, n type semiconductor) samples with thickness varying from 7 to 29 nm. This allows us to properly map out dimension and doping space. Combining theoretical and experimental studies, we reveal that the sharper pre-edge of the conduction-band density of states arising from quantum confinement gives rise to an enhancement of the Seebeck coefficient and the power factor in the thinner InSe samples. Most importantly, we experimentally identify the role of the competition between quantum confinement length and thermal de Broglie wavelength in the enhancement of power factor. Our results provide an important and general experimental guideline for optimizing the power factor and improving the thermoelectric performance of two-dimensional layered semiconductors.

The China crisis

The so-called \textit{China crisis}, well documented in \textit{History of the IAU} by Adriaan Blaauw and in \textit{Under the Same Starry Sky: History of the IAU} by Chengqi Fu and Shuhua Ye, refers to the withdrawal in 1960 of the People's Republic of China (PRC) from the Union. The crisis stemmed from the admission by the IAU, amidst strong protest from PRC and some other member countries, of the Republic of China (ROC) to the Union, creating the so-called `\textit{Two Chinas}' -- or `\textit{One China, one Taiwan}' problem. The crisis directly led to the absence of mainland Chinese astronomers from the stage of international collaborations and exchanges, and was only solved two decades later. The solution, accepted by all the parties involved, is that China is to have two adhering organizations, with mainland China astronomers represented by the Chinese Astronomical Society located in Nanjing (China Nanjing) and China Taiwan astronomers represented by the Academia Sinica located in Taipei (China Taipei). The denominations `\textit{China Nanjing}' and `\textit{China Taipei}' represent the IAU official resolution and should be used in all IAU events. The China crisis, probably the most serious one in IAU history, was a painful lesson in the 100-year development of the Union. Yet, with its eventual solution, the Union has emerged stronger, upholding its spirit of promoting astronomical development through international collaboration of astronomers from all regions and countries, regardless of the political systems, religion, ethnicity, gender or level of astronomical development.

Low-Temperature Eutectic Synthesis of PtTe2 with Weak Antilocalization and Controlled Layer Thinning

Metallic transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have exhibited various exotic physical properties and hold the promise of novel optoelectronic and topological devices applications. However, the synthesis of metallic TMDs is based on gas-phase methods and requires high temperature condition. As an alternative to the gas-phase synthetic approach, lower temperature eutectic liquid-phase synthesis presents a very promising approach with the potential for larger-scale and controllable growth of high-quality thin metallic TMDs single crystals. Herein, we report the first realization of low-temperature eutectic liquid-phase synthesis of type-II Dirac semimetal PtTe2 single crystals with thickness ranging from 2 to 200 nm. The electrical measurement of synthesized PtTe2 reveals a record-high conductivity of as high as 3.3*106 S/m at room temperature. Besides, we experimentally identify the weak antilocalization behavior in the type-II Dirac semimetal PtTe2 for the first time. Furthermore, we develop a simple and general strategy to obtain atomically-thin PtTe2 crystal by thinning as-synthesized bulk samples, which can still retain highly crystalline and exhibits excellent electric conductivity. Our results of controllable and scalable low-temperature eutectic liquid-phase synthesis and layer-by-layer thinning of high-quality thin PtTe2 single crystals offer a simple and general approach for obtaining different thickness metallic TMDs with high-melting point transition metal.

LEMONY--a Library of Empirical Medium-resolution spectra by Observations with the NAOC Xinglong 2.16\,m and YNAO Gaomeigu 2.4\,m telescopes

This study expands the coverage and improves the homogeneity of the distribution of MILES template stars in the parameter space, as well as extends the wavelength coverage of the template spectra to the far red beyond the Ca\,{\sc{ii}} triplet. To achieve this we have carried out a major observational campaign using the OMR long-slit spectrograph mounted on the NAOC 2.16\,m telescope and the YFOSC long-slit spectrograph mounted on the YNAO 2.4\,m telescope. The original sample is based on the MILES library, supplemented by 918 stars selected from PASTEL database. In total, 822 OMR and 1,324 YFOSC spectra, covering respectively the wavelength ranges $λλ$3800--5180 and $λλ$5150--9000, have been collected and reduced. The spectra have a mean resolution FWHM (full-width at half-maximum) of $\sim 3.3$\,Å and are wavelength- and flux-calibrated to an accuracy of $\sim 20$\,km\,s$^{-1}$ and $\sim 5$\,per\,cent, respectively. The spectra are further corrected for systematic errors in the wavelength calibration to an accuracy of $\sim 4$\,km\,s$^{-1}$ by cross-correlating with the theoretical spectra. Almost all the spectra have an average signal to noise ratio (SNR) better than 100 per pixel. Combined with the MILES spectra, there are now 1,731, 1,542, 1,324 and 1,273 stars with spectra covering respectively $λλ$3800--5180, $λλ$3800--7500, $λλ$5150--9000 and $λλ$3800--9000. This paper describes our template star selection, the observation and data reduction, and presents the reduced spectra collected hitherto.

Stellar mass distribution and star formation history of the Galactic disk revealed by mono-age stellar populations from LAMOST

We present a detailed determination and analysis of 3D stellar mass distribution of the Galactic disk for mono-age populations using a sample of 0.93 million main-sequence turn-off and subgiant stars from the LAMOST Galactic Surveys. Our results show (1) all stellar populations younger than 10\,Gyr exhibit strong disk flaring, which is accompanied with a dumpy vertical density profile that is best described by a $sech^n$ function with index depending on both radius and age; (2) Asymmetries and wave-like oscillations are presented in both the radial and vertical direction, with strength varying with stellar populations; (3) As a contribution by the Local spiral arm, the mid-plane stellar mass density at solar radius but 400--800\,pc (3--6$^\circ$) away from the Sun in the azimuthal direction has a value of $0.0594\pm0.0008$\,$M_\odot$/pc$^3$, which is 0.0164\,$M_\odot$/pc$^3$ higher than previous estimates at the solar neighborhood. The result causes doubts on the current estimate of local dark matter density; (4) The radial distribution of surface mass density yields a disk scale length evolving from $\sim$4\,kpc for the young to $\sim$2\,kpc for the old populations. The overall population exhibits a disk scale length of $2.48\pm0.05$\,kpc, and a total stellar mass of $3.6(\pm0.1)\times10^{10}$\,$M_\odot$ assuming $R_{\odot}=8.0$\,kpc, and the value becomes $4.1(\pm0.1)\times10^{10}$\,$M_\odot$ if $R_{\odot}=8.3$\,kpc; (5) The disk has a peak star formation rate ({\rm SFR}) changing from 6--8\,Gyr at the inner to 4--6\,Gyr ago at the outer part, indicating an inside-out assemblage history. The 0--1\,Gyr population yields a recent disk total {\rm SFR} of $1.96\pm0.12$\,$M_\odot$/yr.
