Continuity of the Weil-Petersson potential

Let $\mathcal{M}_{\rm KSB}$ (resp. $\mathcal{M}_{\rm KSB}'$) be the the moduli space of $n$-dimensional Kähler-Einstein manifolds (resp. varieties) $X$ with $K_X$ ample. We prove that the Weil-Petersson metric on $\mathcal{M}_{\rm KSB}$ extends uniquely to the projective variety $\mathcal{M}_{\rm KSB}'$, as a closed positive current with continuous local potentials. This generalizes a theorem of Wolpert which treats the case $n=1$, and also confirms a conjecture of Berman-Guenancia. In addition, we derive uniform estimates for the volumes of sublevel sets of Kähler-Einstein potentials

Role of rotational coherence in femtosecond-pulse-driven nitrogen ion lasing

We experimentally investigated the rotationally resolved polarization characteristics of N$_2^+$ lasing at 391 and 428 nm using a pump-seed scheme. By varying the relative angle between the linear polarizations of the pump and seed, it is found that the polarizations of the P and R branches of 391-nm lasing are counter-rotated. By contrast, both branches of 428-nm lasing remain polarized along the pump. The origin of the puzzled abnormal polarization characteristics is found based on a complete physical model that simultaneously includes the transient photoionization and the subsequent coupling among the electronic, vibrational and rotational quantum states of ions.It suggests that the cascaded resonant Raman processes following ionization create negative coherence between the rotational states of $J$ and $J$+2 in the ionic ground state X$^2Σ_g^+(ν=0)$, which leads to mirror-symmetrical polarization for the P and R branches of 391-nm lasing. Both the experiment and theory indicate that the demonstrated rotational coherence plays an extremely pivotal role in clarifying the gain mechanism of N$_2^+$ lasing and opens up the route toward quantum optics under ultrafast strong fields.

Riemannian geometry of Kahler-Einstein currents III: compactness of Kahler-Einstein manifolds of negative scalar curvature

Let $\mathcal{K}(n, V)$ be the set of $n$-dimensional compact Kahler-Einstein manifolds $(X, g)$ satisfying $Ric(g)= - g$ with volume bounded above by $V$. We prove that after passing to a subsequence, any sequence $\{ (X_j, g_j)\}_{j=1}^\infty$ in $\mathcal{K}(n, V)$ converges, in the pointed Gromov-Hausdorff topology, to a finite union of complete Kahler-Einstein metric spaces without loss of volume. The convergence is smooth off a closed singular set of Hausdorff dimension no greater than $2n-4$, and the limiting metric space is biholomorphic to an $n$-dimensional semi-log canonical model with its non log terminal locus of complex dimension no greater than $n-1$ removed. We also show that the Weil-Petersson metric extends uniquely to a Kahler current with bounded local potentials on the KSBA compactification of the moduli space of canonically polarized manifolds. In particular, the coarse KSBA moduli space has finite volume with respect to the Weil-Petersson metric. Our results are a high dimensional generalization of the well known compactness results for hyperbolic metrics on compact Riemann surfaces of fixed genus greater than one.

Active Lighting Recurrence by Parallel Lighting Analogy for Fine-Grained Change Detection

This paper studies a new problem, namely active lighting recurrence (ALR) that physically relocalizes a light source to reproduce the lighting condition from single reference image for a same scene, which may suffer from fine-grained changes during twice observations. ALR is of great importance for fine-grained visual inspection and change detection, because some phenomena or minute changes can only be clearly observed under particular lighting conditions. Therefore, effective ALR should be able to online navigate a light source toward the target pose, which is challenging due to the complexity and diversity of real-world lighting and imaging processes. To this end, we propose to use the simple parallel lighting as an analogy model and based on Lambertian law to compose an instant navigation ball for this purpose. We theoretically prove the feasibility, i.e., equivalence and convergence, of this ALR approach for realistic near point light source and small near surface light source. Besides, we also theoretically prove the invariance of our ALR approach to the ambiguity of normal and lighting decomposition. The effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach have been verified by both extensive quantitative experiments and challenging real-world tasks on fine-grained change detection of cultural heritages. We also validate the generality of our approach to non-Lambertian scenes.

Atomic-Precision Fabrication of Quasi-Full-Space Grain Boundaries in Two-Dimensional Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Precise control and in-depth understanding of the interfaces is crucial for the functionality-oriented material design with desired properties. Herein, via modifying the long-standing bicrystal strategy, we proposed a novel nanowelding approach to build up interfaces between two-dimensional (2D) materials with atomic precision. This method enabled us, for the first time, to experimentally achieve the quasi-full-parameter-space grain boundaries (GBs) in 2D hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). It further helps us unravel the long-term controversy and confusion on the registry of GBs in h-BN, including i) discriminate the relative contribution of the strain and chemical energy on the registry of GBs; ii) identify a new dislocation core- Frank partial dislocation and four new anti-phase boundaries; and iii) confirm the universal GB faceting. Our work provides a new paradigm to the exploiting of structural-property correlation of interfaces in 2D materials.

Sub-cycle coherent control of ionic dynamics via transient ionization injection

We investigate the interwoven dynamic evolutions of neutral nitrogen molecules together with nitrogen ions created through transient tunnel ionization in an intense laser field. By treating the molecules as open quantum systems, it is found that considering real-time injection of ions and strong couplings among their electronic states, nitrogen molecular ions are primarily populated in the electronically excited states, rather than staying in the ground state as predicted by the well-known tunneling theory. The unexpected result is attributed to sub-cycle switch-on of time-dependent polarization by transient ionization and dynamic Stark shift mediated near-resonant multiphoton transitions. Their combined contribution also causes that the vibrational distribution of N$_2^+$ does not comply with Franck-Condon principle. These findings corroborate the mechanism of nitrogen molecular ion lasing and are likely to be universal. The present work opens a new route to explore the important role of transient ionization injection in strong-field induced non-equilibrium dynamics.

Sequential Scenario-Specific Meta Learner for Online Recommendation

Cold-start problems are long-standing challenges for practical recommendations. Most existing recommendation algorithms rely on extensive observed data and are brittle to recommendation scenarios with few interactions. This paper addresses such problems using few-shot learning and meta learning. Our approach is based on the insight that having a good generalization from a few examples relies on both a generic model initialization and an effective strategy for adapting this model to newly arising tasks. To accomplish this, we combine the scenario-specific learning with a model-agnostic sequential meta-learning and unify them into an integrated end-to-end framework, namely Scenario-specific Sequential Meta learner (or s^2 meta). By doing so, our meta-learner produces a generic initial model through aggregating contextual information from a variety of prediction tasks while effectively adapting to specific tasks by leveraging learning-to-learn knowledge. Extensive experiments on various real-world datasets demonstrate that our proposed model can achieve significant gains over the state-of-the-arts for cold-start problems in online recommendation. On the proper moduli spaces of smoothable Kähler-Einstein Fano varieties

In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the orbit space of the closure of the subscheme parametrizing smooth Fano Kähler-Einstein manifolds inside an appropriate Hilbert scheme. In particular, we prove that being K-semistable is a Zariski open condition and establish the uniqueness for the Gromov-Hausdorff limit for a punctured flat family of Fano Kähler-Einstein manifolds. Based on these, we construct a proper scheme parameterizing the S-equivalent classes of $\QQ$-Gorenstein smoothable, K-semistable Fano varieties, and verify various necessary properties to guarantee that it is a good moduli space.

Study of electron emission from 1D nanomaterials under super high field

Photoemission driven by a strong electric field of near-infrared or visible light, referred to as strong-field photoemission, produces attosecond electron pulses that are synchronized to the waveform of the incident light, and this principle lies at the heart of current attosecond technologies. However, full access to strong-field photoemission regimes at near-infrared wavelengths based on solid-state materials is restricted by space-charge screening and material damage at high optical-field strengths, which significantly hampers the realization of predicted attosecond technologies, such as ultra-sensitive optical phase modulation. Here, we demonstrate a new type of strong-field photoemission behaviour with extreme nonlinearity -- photoemission current scales follow a 40th power law of the optical-field strength, making use of sub-nanometric carbon nanotubes and 800 nm pulses. As a result, the total photoemission current depends on the carrier-envelope phase with a greatly improved photoemission current modulation depth of up to 100%, which has not previously been achieved. Time-dependent density functional calculations reveal the completely new behaviour of the optical-field induced tunnelling emission process directly from the valence band of the carbon nanotubes, which is an indication of full access to a strong-field photoemission regime. Furthermore, the nonlinear dynamics are observed to be tunable by changing the binding energy of the valence-band-maximum, as confirmed by Simpleman model calculations. We believe that such extreme nonlinear photoemission from nanotips offers a new means of producing extreme temporal-spatial resolved electron pulses. These results additionally provide a new design philosophy for attosecond electronics and optics by making use of tunable band structures in nanomaterials.

In-situ fabrication of Mo6S6 nanowire terminated edges in monolayer molybdenum disulfide

Edge structures are highly relevant to the electronic, magnetic and catalytic properties of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and their one dimensional (1D) counterpart, i.e., nanoribbons, which should be precisely tailored for the desirable applications. In this work, we report the formation of novel Mo6S6 nanowire (NW) terminated edges in a monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) via an e-beam irradiation process combined with high temperature heating in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). Atomic structures of NW terminated edges and the dynamic formation process were observed experimentally. Further analysis shows that NW terminated edge could form on both Mo-zigzag (ZZ) edge and S-ZZ edge which can exhibit even higher stability superior to the pristine zigzag (ZZ) and armchair (AC) edge. In addition, the analogous edge structures can be also formed in MoS2 nanoribbon and other TMDs material such as MoxW1-xSe2. We believe that the presence of these novel edge structures in 2D and 1D TMD materials may provide novel properties and new opportunities for their versatile applications including catalytic, spintronic and electronic devices.

This paper presents the Neural Cache architecture, which re-purposes cache structures to transform them into massively parallel compute units capable of running inferences for Deep Neural Networks. Techniques to do in-situ arithmetic in SRAM arrays, create efficient data mapping and reducing data movement are proposed. The Neural Cache architecture is capable of fully executing convolutional, fully connected, and pooling layers in-cache. The proposed architecture also supports quantization in-cache. Our experimental results show that the proposed architecture can improve inference latency by 18.3x over state-of-art multi-core CPU (Xeon E5), 7.7x over server class GPU (Titan Xp), for Inception v3 model. Neural Cache improves inference throughput by 12.4x over CPU (2.2x over GPU), while reducing power consumption by 50% over CPU (53% over GPU).

Unveiling the role of Co-O-Mg bond in magnetic anisotropy of Pt/Co/MgO using atomically controlled deposition and in-situ electrical measurement

Despite the crucial role of interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in Co(Fe)/MgO based magnetic tunnel junction, the underlying mechanism is still being debated. Here, we report an anatomical study of oxygen and Mg effect on Pt/Co bilayers through repeated in-situ anomalous Hall effect measurements, controlled oxygen exposure and Mg deposition in an ultrahigh vacuum system. We found that chemisorbed oxygen not only quenches the effective magnetic moment of the Co surface layer, but also softens its magnetic anisotropy. However, a subsequent Mg dusting on the oxygen pre-exposed Pt/Co surface can recover the magnetic anisotropy. The ab initio calculations on the exchange splitting and orbital hybridization near the Fermi level give a clear physical explanation of the experimental observations. Our results suggest that Co(Fe)-O-M bond plays a more important role than the widely perceived Co(Fe)-O bond does in realizing interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in Co(Fe)/MgO heterostructures.

City traffic forecasting using taxi GPS data: A coarse-grained cellular automata model

City traffic is a dynamic system of enormous complexity. Modeling and predicting city traffic flow remains to be a challenge task and the main difficulties are how to specify the supply and demands and how to parameterize the model. In this paper we attempt to solve these problems with the help of large amount of floating car data. We propose a coarse-grained cellular automata model that simulates vehicles moving on uniform grids whose size are much larger compared with the microscopic cellular automata model. The car-car interaction in the microscopic model is replaced by the coupling between vehicles and coarse-grained state variables in our model. To parameterize the model, flux-occupancy relations are fitted from the historical data at every grids, which serve as the coarse-grained fundamental diagrams coupling the occupancy and speed. To evaluate the model, we feed it with the historical travel demands and trajectories obtained from the floating car data and use the model to predict road speed one hour into the future. Numerical results show that our model can capture the traffic flow pattern of the entire city and make reasonable predictions. The current work can be considered a prototype for a model-based forecasting system for city traffic.

High-harmonic and terahertz wave spectroscopy (HATS) for aligned molecules

We present the experimental and theoretical details of our recent published letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115. 123002] on synchronized high-harmonic and terahertz-wave spectroscopy (HATS) from nonadiabatically aligned nitrogen molecules in dual-color laser fields. Associating the alignment-angle dependent terahertz wave generation with the synchronizing high-harmonic signal, the angular differential photoionization cross section (PICS) for molecules can be reconstructed, and the minima of the angle on PICS show great convergence between the theoretical predictions and the experimental deduced results. We also show the optimal relative phase between the dual-color laser fields for terahertz wave generation dose not change with the alignment angle at a precision of $50$ attoseconds. This all-optical method provides an alternative for investigating molecular structures and dynamics.

Balanced embedding of degenerating Abelian varieties

For a certain maximal unipotent family of Abelian varieties over the punctured disc, we show that after a base change, one can complete the family over a disc such that the whole degeneration can be simultaneously balanced embedded into a projective space by the theta functions. Then we study the relationship between the balanced filling-in and the Gromov-Hausdorff limit of flat Kähler metrics on the nearby fibers.

Virtualization of Multi-Cell 802.11 Networks: Association and Airtime Control

This paper investigates the virtualization and optimization of a multi-cell WLAN. We consider the station (STA)-access point (AP) association and airtime control for virtualized 802.11 networks to provide service customization and fairness across multiple internet service providers (ISPs) sharing the common physical infrastructure and network capacity. More specifically, an optimization problem is formulated on the STAs transmission probabilities to maximize the overall network throughput, while providing airtime usage guarantees for the ISPs. Subsequently, an algorithm to reach the optimal solution is developed by applying monomial approximation and geometric programming iteratively. Based on the proposed three-dimensional Markov-chain model of the enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) protocol, the detailed implementation of the optimal transmission probability is also discussed. The accuracy of the proposed Markov-chain model and the performance of the developed association and airtime control scheme are evaluated through numerical results.

Convergence of the conical Ricci flow on S2 to a soliton

In our previous work [PSSW], we showed that the Ricci flow on S^2 whose initial metric has conical singularities \sum_{j=1}^k β_j[p_j] converges to a constant curvature metric with conic singularities (in the stable and semi-stable cases) or to a gradient shrinking soliton with conical singularities (in the unstable case). The purpose of this note is to show that in the unstable case, that is, the case where β_k>β_k'=\s_{j<k}β_j, that the limiting metric is the unique shrinking soliton with cone singularity β_k[p_\infty]+β_k'[q_\infty]. This verifies the prediction made in [PSSW].
