Observation of slow light in glide-symmetric photonic-crystal waveguides

We report optical transmission measurements on suspended silicon photonic-crystal waveguides, where one side of the photonic lattice is shifted by half a period along the waveguide axis. The combination of this glide symmetry and slow light leads to a strongly enhanced chiral light-matter interaction but the interplay between slow light and backscattering has not been investigated experimentally in such waveguides. We build photonic-crystal resonators consisting of glide-symmetric waveguides terminated by reflectors and use transmission measurements as well as evanescent coupling to map out the dispersion relation. We find excellent agreement with theory and measure group indices exceeding 90, implying significant potential for applications in slow-light devices and chiral quantum optics. By measuring resonators of different length, we assess the role of backscattering induced by fabrication imperfections and its intimate connection to the group index.

Single-photon quantum hardware: towards scalable photonic quantum technology with a quantum advantage

The scaling up of quantum hardware is the fundamental challenge ahead in order to realize the disruptive potential of quantum technology in information science. Among the plethora of hardware platforms, photonics stands out by offering a modular approach, where the main challenge is to construct sufficiently high-quality building blocks and develop methods to efficiently interface them. Importantly, the subsequent scaling-up will make full use of the mature integrated photonic technology provided by photonic foundry infrastructure to produce small foot-print quantum processors of immense complexity. A fully coherent and deterministic photon-emitter interface is a key enabler of quantum photonics, and can today be realized with solid-state quantum emitters with specifications reaching the quantitative benchmark referred to as Quantum Advantage. This light-matter interaction primer realizes a range of quantum photonic resources and functionalities, including on-demand single-photon and multi-photon entanglement sources, and photon-photon nonlinear quantum gates. We will present the current state-of-the-art in single-photon quantum hardware and the main photonic building blocks required in order to scale up. Furthermore, we will point out specific promising applications of the hardware building blocks within quantum communication and photonic quantum computing, laying out the road ahead for quantum photonics applications that could offer a genuine quantum advantage.

Electroabsorption in gated GaAs nanophotonic waveguides

We report on the analysis of electroabsorption in thin GaAs/Al$_{0.3}$Ga$_{0.7}$As nanophotonic waveguides with an embedded $p$-$i$-$n$ junction. By measuring the transmission through waveguides of different lengths, we derive the propagation loss as a function of electric field, wavelength, and temperature. The results are in good agreement with the Franz-Keldysh model of electroabsorption extending over 200 meV below the GaAs bandgap, i.e. in the 910--970 nm wavelength range. We find a pronounced residual absorption in forward bias, which we attribute to Fermi-level pinning at the waveguide surface, producing over 20 dB/mm loss at room temperature. These results are essential for understanding the origin of loss in nanophotonic devices operating in the emission range of self-assembled InAs semiconductor quantum dots, towards the realization of scalable quantum photonic integrated circuits.

Scalable integrated single-photon source

Photonic qubits are key enablers for quantum-information processing deployable across a distributed quantum network. An on-demand and truly scalable source of indistinguishable single photons is the essential component enabling high-fidelity photonic quantum operations. A main challenge is to overcome noise and decoherence processes in order to reach the steep benchmarks on generation efficiency and photon indistinguishability required for scaling up the source. We report on the realization of a deterministic single-photon source featuring near-unity indistinguishability using a quantum dot in an 'on-chip' planar nanophotonic waveguide circuit. The device produces long strings of $>100$ single photons without any observable decrease in the mutual indistinguishability between photons. A total generation rate of $122$ million photons per second is achieved corresponding to an 'on-chip' source efficiency of $84 \%$. These specifications of the single-photon source are benchmarked for boson sampling and found to enable scaling into the regime of quantum advantage.

On-chip nanomechanical filtering of quantum-dot single-photon sources

Semiconductor quantum dots in photonic integrated circuits enable scaling quantum-information processing to many single photons and quantum-optical gates. On-chip spectral filters are essential to achieve high-purity and coherent photon emission from quantum dots embedded in waveguides, without resorting to free-space optics. Such spectral filters should be tunable, to compensate for the inhomogeneous spectral distribution of the quantum dots transitions. Here, we report an on-chip filter monolithically integrated with quantum dots, that uses nanomechanical motion for tuning its resonant wavelength over 10 nm, enabling operation at cryogenic temperatures and avoiding cross-talk with the emitter. We demonstrate single-photon emission from a quantum dot under non-resonant excitation by employing only the on-chip filter. These results are key for the development of fully-integrated de-multiplexing, multi-path photon encoding schemes, and multi-emitter circuits.

Nanomechanical single-photon routing

The merger between integrated photonics and quantum optics promises new opportunities within photonic quantum technology with the very significant progress on excellent photon-emitter interfaces and advanced optical circuits. A key missing functionality is rapid circuitry reconfigurability that ultimately does not introduce loss or emitter decoherence, and operating at a speed matching the photon generation and quantum memory storage time of the on-chip quantum emitter. This ambitious goal requires entirely new active quantum-photonic devices by extending the traditional approaches to reconfigurability. Here, by merging nano-optomechanics and deterministic photon-emitter interfaces we demonstrate on-chip single-photon routing with low loss, small device footprint, and an intrinsic time response approaching the spin coherence time of solid-state quantum emitters. The device is an essential building block for constructing advanced quantum photonic architectures on-chip, towards, e.g., coherent multi-photon sources, deterministic photon-photon quantum gates, quantum repeater nodes, or scalable quantum networks.

Coherent optical control of a quantum-dot spin-qubit in a waveguide-based spin-photon interface

Waveguide-based spin-photon interfaces on the GaAs platform have emerged as a promising system for a variety of quantum information applications directly integrated into planar photonic circuits. The coherent control of spin states in a quantum dot can be achieved by applying circularly polarized laser pulses that may be coupled into the planar waveguide vertically through radiation modes. However, proper control of the laser polarization is challenging since the polarization is modified through the transformation from the far field to the exact position of the quantum dot in the nanostructure. Here we demonstrate polarization-controlled excitation of a quantum-dot electron spin and use that to perform coherent control in a Ramsey interferometry experiment. The Ramsey interference reveals a pure dephasing time of $ 2.2\pm0.1 $ ns, which is comparable to the values so far only obtained in bulk media. We analyze the experimental limitations in spin initialization fidelity and Ramsey contrast and identify the underlying mechanisms.

High-Efficiency Shallow-Etched Grating on GaAs Membranes for Quantum Photonic Applications

We have designed and fabricated a shallow-etched grating on gallium arsenide nanomembranes for efficient chip-to-fiber coupling in quantum photonic integrated circuits. Experimental results show that the grating provides a fiber-coupling efficiency of >60 %, a greatly suppressed back reflection of <1 % for the designed wavelength of 930 nm, and a 3-dB bandwidth of >43 nm. Highly efficient single-photon collection from embedded indium arsenide quantum dots to an optical fiber was realized with the designed grating, showing an average sixfold increase in photon count compared to commonly used circular gratings, offering an efficient interface for on-chip quantum information processing.

A note on relative amenable of finite von Neumann algebras

Let $M$ be a finite von Neumann algebra (resp. a type II$_{1}$ factor) and let $N\subset M$ be a II$_{1}$ factor (resp. $N\subset M$ have an atomic part). We prove that the inclusion $N\subset M$ is amenable implies the identity map on $M$ has an approximate factorization through $M_m(\mathbb{C})\otimes N $ via trace preserving normal unital completely positive maps, which is a generalization of a result of Haagerup. We also prove two permanence properties for amenable inclusions. One is weak Haagerup property, the other is weak exactness.

A note on characterizations of relative amenability on finite von Neumann algebras

In this paper, we give another two characterizations of relative amenability on finite von Neumann algebras, one of which can be thought of as an analogue of injective operator systems. As an application, we prove a stable property of relative amenable inclusions. We prove that under certain assumptions, the inclusion $N=\int_{X} \bigoplus N_{p} d μ\subset M=\int_{X} \bigoplus M_{p} d μ$ is amenable if and only if $N_p\subset M_p$ is amenable almost everywhere.

Suppressing phonon decoherence of high performance single-photon sources in nanophotonic waveguides

The fundamental process limiting the coherence of quantum-dot based single-photon sources is the interaction with phonons. We study the effect of phonon decoherence on the indistinguishability of single photons emitted from a quantum dot embedded in a suspended nanobeam waveguide. At low temperatures, the indistinguishability is limited by the coupling between the quantum dot and the fundamental vibrational modes of the waveguide and is sensitive to the quantum-dot position within the nanobeam cross-section. We show that this decoherence channel can be efficiently suppressed by clamping the waveguide with a low refractive index cladding material deposited on the waveguide. With only a few microns of cladding material, the coherence of the emitted single photons is drastically improved. We show that the degree of indistinguishability can reach near unity and become independent of the quantum-dot position. We finally show that the cladding material may serve dual purposes since it can also be applied as a means to efficiently outcouple single photons from the nanophotonic waveguide into an optical fiber. Our proposal paves the way for a highly efficient fiber-coupled source of indistinguishable single photons based on a planar nanophotonic platform.

A note on the $C$-numerical radius and the $λ$-Aluthge transform in finite factors

We prove that for any two elements $A$, $B$ in a factor $M$, if $B$ commutes with all the unitary conjugates of $A$, then either $A$ or $B$ is in $\mathbb{C}I$. Then we obtain an equivalent condition for the situation that the $C$-numerical radius $ω_{C}(\cdot)$ is a weakly unitarily invariant norm on finite factors and we also prove some inequalities on the $C$-numerical radius on finite factors. As an application, we show that for an invertible operator $T$ in a finite factor $M$, $f(\bigtriangleup_λ(T))$ is in the weak operator closure of the set $\{\sum_{i=1}^{n}z_{i}U_{i}f(T)U_{i}^{*}|n\in\mathbb{N},(U_{i})_{1\leq i\leq n}\in \mathscr{U}(M),\sum_{i=1}^{n}|z_{i}|\leq 1\}$, where $f$ is a polynomial, $\bigtriangleup_λ(T)$ is the $λ$-Aluthge transform of $T$ and $0\leqλ\leq 1$.

Another construction of the braided $T$-category

This paper introduces group-cograded monoidal Hom-Hopf algebras, and shows that this kind of group-cograded monoidal Hom-Hopf algebras are monoidal Hom-Hopf algebras in the Turaev category $\mathcal{J}_{k}$ introduced by Canepeel and De Lombaerde. Then we define the $p$-Yetter-Drinfeld category over a group-cograded monoidal Hom-Hopf algebra, and construct a new kind of braided $T$-categories.

Nano watermill driven by the revolving charge

Using molecular dynamics simulations, we propose a novel nanoscale watermill for unidirectional transport of water molecules through a curved single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT). In this nanoscale system, a revolving charge is introduced to drive water chain confined inside the SWNT, which is served as nano waterwheel and nano engine. A resonance-like phenomenon is found that the revolving frequency of the charge plays a key role in pumping water chain. The water flux across the SWNT increases with respect to the revolving frequency of the external charge and reaches the maximum when the frequency is 4 THz. Correspondingly, the number of the hydrogen bonds of water chain inside the SWNT decreases dramatically with the frequency ranging from 4 THz to 25 THz. The mechanism behind the resonant phenomenon has been investigated systematically. Our findings are helpful for designing nanoscale fluidic devices and energy converters.

Phase characteristics of electromagnetically induced transparency analogue in coupled resonant systems

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and EIT-like effects have been investigated in a wide variety of coupled resonant systems. Here, a classification of the phase characteristics of the EIT-like spectral responses is presented. Newly identified phase responses reveal unexplored operation regimes of EIT-like systems. Taking advantage of the new phase regimes, one can obtain group delay, dispersion and nonlinearity properties greatly enhanced by almost one order of magnitude, compared to the traditionally constructed EIT-like devices, which breaks the fundamental limitation (e.g., delay-bandwidth product) intrinsic to atomic EIT and EIT-like effects. Optical devices and electrical circuits are analyzed as examples showing the universality of our finding. We show that cavity-QED-based quantum phase gates can be greatly improved to achieve a phase shift of π. The new phase characteristics are also believed to be useful to build novel doubly resonant devices in quantum information based on cavity QED, optomechanics, and metamaterials.

Unitary operators in the orthogonal complement of a type $\mathrm{I}$ von Neumann algebra in a type $\mathrm{II}^{}_{1}$ factor

It is well-known that the equality $$L^{}_{G}\ominus L^{}_{H}=\bar{\mathrm{span}\{L_{g}:g\in G-H\}^{\mathrm{SOT}}}$$ holds for $G$ an i.c.c. group and $H$ a subgroup in $G$, where $L^{}_{G}$ and $L^{}_{H}$ are the corresponding group von Neumann algebras and $L^{}_{G}\ominus L^{}_{H}$ is the set $\{x\in L^{}_{G}:E^{}_{L^{}_{H}}(x)=0\}$ with $E^{}_{L^{}_{H}}$ the conditional expectation defined from $L^{}_{G}$ onto $L^{}_{H}$. Inspired by this, it is natural to ask whether the equality $$N\ominus A=\bar{\mathrm{span}\{u: u\mbox{is unitary in}N\ominus A\}^{\mathrm{SOT}}}$$ holds for $N$ a type $\mbox{II}^{}_{1}$ factor and $A$ a von Neumann subalgebra of $N$. In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to this question for the case $A$ a type I von Neumann algebra.
