GraphRQI: Classifying Driver Behaviors Using Graph Spectrums

We present a novel algorithm (GraphRQI) to identify driver behaviors from road-agent trajectories. Our approach assumes that the road-agents exhibit a range of driving traits, such as aggressive or conservative driving. Moreover, these traits affect the trajectories of nearby road-agents as well as the interactions between road-agents. We represent these inter-agent interactions using unweighted and undirected traffic graphs. Our algorithm classifies the driver behavior using a supervised learning algorithm by reducing the computation to the spectral analysis of the traffic graph. Moreover, we present a novel eigenvalue algorithm to compute the spectrum efficiently. We provide theoretical guarantees for the running time complexity of our eigenvalue algorithm and show that it is faster than previous methods by 2 times. We evaluate the classification accuracy of our approach on traffic videos and autonomous driving datasets corresponding to urban traffic. In practice, GraphRQI achieves an accuracy improvement of up to 25% over prior driver behavior classification algorithms. We also use our classification algorithm to predict the future trajectories of road-agents.

Document Rectification and Illumination Correction using a Patch-based CNN

We propose a novel learning method to rectify document images with various distortion types from a single input image. As opposed to previous learning-based methods, our approach seeks to first learn the distortion flow on input image patches rather than the entire image. We then present a robust technique to stitch the patch results into the rectified document by processing in the gradient domain. Furthermore, we propose a second network to correct the uneven illumination, further improving the readability and OCR accuracy. Due to the less complex distortion present on the smaller image patches, our patch-based approach followed by stitching and illumination correction can significantly improve the overall accuracy in both the synthetic and real datasets.

Blind Geometric Distortion Correction on Images Through Deep Learning

We propose the first general framework to automatically correct different types of geometric distortion in a single input image. Our proposed method employs convolutional neural networks (CNNs) trained by using a large synthetic distortion dataset to predict the displacement field between distorted images and corrected images. A model fitting method uses the CNN output to estimate the distortion parameters, achieving a more accurate prediction. The final corrected image is generated based on the predicted flow using an efficient, high-quality resampling method. Experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm outperforms traditional correction methods, and allows for interesting applications such as distortion transfer, distortion exaggeration, and co-occurring distortion correction.

State of health estimation for lithium-ion battery by combining incremental capacity analysis with Gaussian process regression

The state of health for lithium battery is necessary to ensure the reliability and safety for battery energy storage system. Accurate prediction battery state of health plays an extremely important role in guaranteeing safety and minimizing the maintenance costs. However, the complex physicochemical characteristics of battery degradation cannot be obtained directly. Here a novel Gaussian process regression model based on partial incremental capacity curve is proposed. First, an advanced Gaussian filter method is applied to obtain the smoothing incremental capacity curves. The health indexes are then extracted from the partial incremental capacity curves as the input features of the proposed model. Otherwise, the mean and the covariance function of the proposed method are applied to predict battery state of health and the model uncertainty, respectively. Four aging datasets from NASA data repository are employed for demonstrating the predictive capability and efficacy of the degradation model using the proposed method. Besides, different initial health conditions of the tested batteries are used to verify the robustness and reliability of the proposed method. Results show that the proposed method can provide accurate and robust state of health estimation.

On the Convergence of Stochastic Gradient Descent with Adaptive Stepsizes

Stochastic gradient descent is the method of choice for large scale optimization of machine learning objective functions. Yet, its performance is greatly variable and heavily depends on the choice of the stepsizes. This has motivated a large body of research on adaptive stepsizes. However, there is currently a gap in our theoretical understanding of these methods, especially in the non-convex setting. In this paper, we start closing this gap: we theoretically analyze in the convex and non-convex settings a generalized version of the AdaGrad stepsizes. We show sufficient conditions for these stepsizes to achieve almost sure asymptotic convergence of the gradients to zero, proving the first guarantee for generalized AdaGrad stepsizes in the non-convex setting. Moreover, we show that these stepsizes allow to automatically adapt to the level of noise of the stochastic gradients in both the convex and non-convex settings, interpolating between $O(1/T)$ and $O(1/\sqrt{T})$, up to logarithmic terms.

Orbital angular momentum conversion of optical field without spin state

As one fundamental property of light, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of photon has elicited widespread interest. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that the OAM conversion of light without any spin state can occur in homogeneous and isotropic medium when a specially tailored locally linearly polarized (STLLP) beam is strongly focused by a high numerical aperture (NA) objective lens. Through a high NA objective lens, the STLLP beams can generate identical twin foci with tunable distance between them controlled by input state of polarization. Such process admits partial OAM conversion from linear state to conjugate OAM states, giving rise to helical phases with opposite directions for each focus of the longitudinal component in the focal field.

Using Clinical Narratives and Structured Data to Identify Distant Recurrences in Breast Cancer

Accurately identifying distant recurrences in breast cancer from the Electronic Health Records (EHR) is important for both clinical care and secondary analysis. Although multiple applications have been developed for computational phenotyping in breast cancer, distant recurrence identification still relies heavily on manual chart review. In this study, we aim to develop a model that identifies distant recurrences in breast cancer using clinical narratives and structured data from EHR. We apply MetaMap to extract features from clinical narratives and also retrieve structured clinical data from EHR. Using these features, we train a support vector machine model to identify distant recurrences in breast cancer patients. We train the model using 1,396 double-annotated subjects and validate the model using 599 double-annotated subjects. In addition, we validate the model on a set of 4,904 single-annotated subjects as a generalization test. We obtained a high area under curve (AUC) score of 0.92 (SD=0.01) in the cross-validation using the training dataset, then obtained AUC scores of 0.95 and 0.93 in the held-out test and generalization test using 599 and 4,904 samples respectively. Our model can accurately and efficiently identify distant recurrences in breast cancer by combining features extracted from unstructured clinical narratives and structured clinical data.

Natural Language Processing for EHR-Based Computational Phenotyping

This article reviews recent advances in applying natural language processing (NLP) to Electronic Health Records (EHRs) for computational phenotyping. NLP-based computational phenotyping has numerous applications including diagnosis categorization, novel phenotype discovery, clinical trial screening, pharmacogenomics, drug-drug interaction (DDI) and adverse drug event (ADE) detection, as well as genome-wide and phenome-wide association studies. Significant progress has been made in algorithm development and resource construction for computational phenotyping. Among the surveyed methods, well-designed keyword search and rule-based systems often achieve good performance. However, the construction of keyword and rule lists requires significant manual effort, which is difficult to scale. Supervised machine learning models have been favored because they are capable of acquiring both classification patterns and structures from data. Recently, deep learning and unsupervised learning have received growing attention, with the former favored for its performance and the latter for its ability to find novel phenotypes. Integrating heterogeneous data sources have become increasingly important and have shown promise in improving model performance. Often better performance is achieved by combining multiple modalities of information. Despite these many advances, challenges and opportunities remain for NLP-based computational phenotyping, including better model interpretability and generalizability, and proper characterization of feature relations in clinical narratives

Quantum Laplacian Eigenmap

Laplacian eigenmap algorithm is a typical nonlinear model for dimensionality reduction in classical machine learning. We propose an efficient quantum Laplacian eigenmap algorithm to exponentially speed up the original counterparts. In our work, we demonstrate that the Hermitian chain product proposed in quantum linear discriminant analysis (arXiv:1510.00113,2015) can be applied to implement quantum Laplacian eigenmap algorithm. While classical Laplacian eigenmap algorithm requires polynomial time to solve the eigenvector problem, our algorithm is able to exponentially speed up nonlinear dimensionality reduction.

Machine Learned Resume-Job Matching Solution

Job search through online matching engines nowadays are very prominent and beneficial to both job seekers and employers. But the solutions of traditional engines without understanding the semantic meanings of different resumes have not kept pace with the incredible changes in machine learning techniques and computing capability. These solutions are usually driven by manual rules and predefined weights of keywords which lead to an inefficient and frustrating search experience. To this end, we present a machine learned solution with rich features and deep learning methods. Our solution includes three configurable modules that can be plugged with little restrictions. Namely, unsupervised feature extraction, base classifiers training and ensemble method learning. In our solution, rather than using manual rules, machine learned methods to automatically detect the semantic similarity of positions are proposed. Then four competitive "shallow" estimators and "deep" estimators are selected. Finally, ensemble methods to bag these estimators and aggregate their individual predictions to form a final prediction are verified. Experimental results of over 47 thousand resumes show that our solution can significantly improve the predication precision current position, salary, educational background and company scale.

An Empirical Study on Sentiment Classification of Chinese Review using Word Embedding

In this article, how word embeddings can be used as features in Chinese sentiment classification is presented. Firstly, a Chinese opinion corpus is built with a million comments from hotel review websites. Then the word embeddings which represent each comment are used as input in different machine learning methods for sentiment classification, including SVM, Logistic Regression, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and ensemble methods. These methods get better performance compared with N-gram models using Naive Bayes (NB) and Maximum Entropy (ME). Finally, a combination of machine learning methods is proposed which presents an outstanding performance in precision, recall and F1 score. After selecting the most useful methods to construct the combinational model and testing over the corpus, the final F1 score is 0.920.

The Existence of Coupling in the Category of Transitive Lie Algebroid

The coupling of the tangent bundle $TM$ with the Lie algebra bundle $L$ (K.Mackenzie,2005, Definition 7.2.2) plays the crucial role in the classification of the transitive Lie algebroids for Lie algebra bundle $L$ with fixed finite dimensional Lie algebra $\rg$ as a fiber of $L$. Here we give a necessary and sufficient condition for existence such a coupling. Namely we define a new topology on the group $\Aut(\rg)$ of all automorphisms of Lie algebra $\rg$ and show that tangent bundle $TM$ can be coupled with the Lie algebra bundle $L$ if and only if the Lie algebra bundle L admits a local trivial structure with structural group endowed with such new topology. The second version of the article is different from the first because of the improvement of the text by invaluable efforts of professor J.Stasheff, to whom we submit our sincere gratitude.

Description of coupling in the category of transitive Lie algebroids

In our previous paper (arXiv:1306.5449) we have given a sufficient and necessary condition when the coupling between Lie algebra bundle (LAB) and the tangent bundle exists in the sense of Mackenzie (\cite{Mck-2005}, Definition 7.2.2) for the theory of transitive Lie algebroids. Namely we have defined a new topology on the group $\Aut(\rg)$ of all automorphisms of the Lie algebra $\rg$, say $\Aut(\rg)^δ$, and show that tangent bundle $TM$ can be coupled with the Lie algebra bundle $L$ if and only if the Lie algebra bundle L admits a local trivial structure with structural group endowed with such new topology. But the question how many couplings exist under these conditions still remains open. Here we make the result more accurate and prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the family $Coup(L)$ of all coupling of the Lie algebra bundle $L$ with fixed finite dimensional Lie algebra $\rg$ as the fiber and the structural group $\Aut(\rg)$ of all automorphisms of Lie algebra $\rg$ and the tangent bundle $TM$ and the family $LAB^δ(L)$ of equivalent classes of local trivial structures with structural group $\Aut(\rg)$ endowed with new topology $\Aut(\rg)^δ$. This result gives a way for geometric construction of the classifying space for transitive Lie algebroids with fixed structural finite dimensiaonal Lie algebra $\rg$. Hence we can clarify a categorical description of the characteristic classes for transitive Lie algebroids and a comparison with that by J. Kubarski.

Process Algebra as Abstract Data Types

In this paper we introduced an algebraic semantics for process algebra in form of abstract data types. For that purpose, we developed a particular type of algebra, the seed algebra, which describes exactly the behavior of a process within a labeled transition system. We have shown the possibility of characterizing the bisimulation of two processes with the isomorphism of their corresponding seed algebras. We pointed out that the traditional concept of isomorphism of algebra does not apply here, because there is even no one-one correspondence between the elements of two seed algebras. The lack of this one-one correspondence comes from the non-deterministic choice of transitions of a process. We introduce a technique of hidden operations to mask unwanted details of elements of a seed algebra, which only reflect non-determinism or other implicit control mechanism of process transition. Elements of a seed algebra are considered as indistinguishable if they show the same behavior after these unwanted details are masked. Each class of indistinguishable elements is called a non-hidden closure. We proved that bisimulation of two processes is equivalent to isomorphism of non-hidden closures of two seed algebras representing these two processes. We call this kind of isomorphism a deep isomorphism. We get different models of seed algebra by specifying different axiom systems for the same signature. Each model corresponds to a different kind of bisimulation. By proving the relations between these models we also established relations between 10 different bisimulations, which form a acyclic directed graph.

A quantum key distribution protocol without classical communications

We provide a quantum key distribution protocol based on the correlations of the Greenburger-Horne-Zeilinger(GHZ) state. No classical communication is needed in the process of the establishment of the key. Our protocol is useful when an unjammable classical communication channel is unavailable. We prove that the protocol is secure.
