Realization of Surface Code Quantum Memory on Systems with Always-On Interactions

We realize Surface Code quantum memories for nearest-neighbor qubits with always-on Ising interactions. This is done by utilizing multi-qubit gates that mimic the functionality of several gates. The previously proposed Surface Code memories rely on error syndrome detection circuits based on CNOT gates. In a two-dimensional planar architecture, to realize a two-qubit CNOT gate in the presence of couplings to other neighboring qubits, the interaction of the target qubit with its three other neighbors must cancel out. Here we present a new error syndrome detection circuit utilizing multi-qubit parity gates. In addition to speed up in the error correction cycles, in our approach, the depth of the error syndrome detection circuit does not grow by increasing the number of qubits in the logical qubit layout. We analytically design the system parameters to realize new five-qubit gates suitable for error syndrome detection in nearest-neighbor two-dimensional array of qubits. The five-qubit gates are designed such that the middle qubit is the target qubit and all four coupled neighbors are the control qubits. In our scheme, only one control parameter of the target qubits must be adjusted to realize controlled-unitary operations. The gate operations are confirmed with a fidelity of >99.9% in a simulated system consists of nine nearest-neighbor qubits.

Machine-learning based three-qubit gate for realization of a Toffoli gate with cQED-based transmon systems

We use machine learning techniques to design a 50 ns three-qubit flux-tunable controlled-controlled-phase gate with fidelity of >99.99% for nearest-neighbor coupled transmons in circuit quantum electrodynamics architectures. We explain our gate design procedure where we enforce realistic constraints, and analyze the new gate's robustness under decoherence, distortion, and random noise. Our controlled-controlled-phase gate in combination with two single-qubit gates realizes a Toffoli gate which is widely used in quantum circuits, logic synthesis, quantum error correction, and quantum games.

Exponential-Condition-Based Barrier Certificate Generation for Safety Verification of Hybrid Systems

A barrier certificate is an inductive invariant function which can be used for the safety verification of a hybrid system. Safety verification based on barrier certificate has the benefit of avoiding explicit computation of the exact reachable set which is usually intractable for nonlinear hybrid systems. In this paper, we propose a new barrier certificate condition, called Exponential Condition, for the safety verification of semi-algebraic hybrid systems. The most important benefit of Exponential Condition is that it has a lower conservativeness than the existing convex condition and meanwhile it possesses the property of convexity. On the one hand, a less conservative barrier certificate forms a tighter over-approximation for the reachable set and hence is able to verify critical safety properties. On the other hand, the property of convexity guarantees its solvability by semidefinite programming method. Some examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness and practicality of our method.

Exact Synthesis of 3-Qubit Quantum Circuits from Non-Binary Quantum Gates Using Multiple-Valued Logic and Group Theory

We propose an approach to optimally synthesize quantum circuits from non-permutative quantum gates such as Controlled-Square-Root-of-Not (i.e. Controlled-V). Our approach reduces the synthesis problem to multiple-valued optimization and uses group theory. We devise a novel technique that transforms the quantum logic synthesis problem from a multi-valued constrained optimization problem to a group permutation problem. The transformation enables us to utilize group theory to exploit the properties of the synthesis problem. Assuming a cost of one for each two-qubit gate, we found all reversible circuits with quantum costs of 4, 5, 6, etc, and give another algorithm to realize these reversible circuits with quantum gates.

Improving the Process-Variation Tolerance of Digital Circuits Using Gate Sizing and Statistical Techniques

A new approach for enhancing the process-variation tolerance of digital circuits is described. We extend recent advances in statistical timing analysis into an optimization framework. Our objective is to reduce the performance variance of a technology-mapped circuit where delays across elements are represented by random variables which capture the manufacturing variations. We introduce the notion of statistical critical paths, which account for both means and variances of performance variation. An optimization engine is used to size gates with a goal of reducing the timing variance along the statistical critical paths. We apply a pair of nested statistical analysis methods deploying a slower more accurate approach for tracking statistical critical paths and a fast engine for evaluation of gate size assignments. We derive a new approximation for the max operation on random variables which is deployed for the faster inner engine. Circuit optimization is carried out using a gain-based algorithm that terminates when constraints are satisfied or no further improvements can be made. We show optimization results that demonstrate an average of 72% reduction in performance variation at the expense of average 20% increase in design area.

Defect-Tolerant CMOL Cell Assignment via Satisfiability

We present a CAD framework for CMOL, a hybrid CMOS/ molecular circuit architecture. Our framework first transforms any logically synthesized circuit based on AND/OR/NOT gates to a NOR gate circuit, and then maps the NOR gates to CMOL. We encode the CMOL cell assignment problem as boolean conditions. The boolean constraint is satisfiable if and only if there is a way to map all the NOR gates to the CMOL cells. We further investigate various types of static defects for the CMOL architecture, and propose a reconfiguration technique that can deal with these defects through our CAD framework. This is the first automated framework for CMOL cell assignment, and the first to model several different CMOL static defects. Empirical results show that our approach is efficient and scalable.

Realizing Ternary Quantum Switching Networks without Ancilla Bits

This paper investigates the synthesis of quantum networks built to realize ternary switching circuits in the absence of ancilla bits. The results we established are twofold. The first shows that ternary Swap, ternary Not and ternary Toffoli gates are universal for the realization of arbitrary $n\times n$ ternary quantum switching networks without ancilla bits. The second result proves that all $n\times n$ quantum ternary networks can be generated by Not, Controlled-Not, Multiply-Two, and Toffoli gates. Our approach is constructive. key words: ternary quantum logic synthesis, quantum circuit optimization, group theory.
